Whew, this topic really had me upset but I’m glad I got it out of my system. There was so much to cover really and I know if we deep dive into it that it is a very complex problem but I just wanted to give some of the thoughts that were boiling over when I first saw the video such as the fact that this is still a thing and some of the things that came to mind in regards to how the situation is generally for Ecuadorians and Latin Americans as a whole. And remember, it’s ok to agree to disagree. We all have our opinion on something and that is just fine.
When I was young, I picked strawberries in the fields with migrant workers. This was in the 80's under Reagan and during that time there was a strong seasonal work visa program. The system worked well, they would rotate up for the harvest season and return home to their families after. It worked well, they had protections, they were here legally and afforded legal rights. It was US companies that lobbied against this, they preferred to exploit workers. This moved into construction and destroyed a whole industry of middle class jobs. And the houses were not cheaper, the companies just made more money on them. Right now, politics and MSM is getting US people to focus on the migrants and not the companies that get rich exploiting them. Right now they can raid companies that hire illegal immigrants and fine the company heavily but they do not. If they did, the program that worked in the 80's would be quickly restarted to the benefit of everyone. Btw, large corporations hire illegal immigrants as well by hiring through temp employment agencies so they have plausible deniability. This is not little mom and pop businesses exploiting illegal immigrants, this is on an industrial scale. (Tyson foods just 1 example) It's a dirty racket getting played and very shameful of the USA. I honestly don't see any good changes coming no matter what happens in our elections and am pretty much over being "an American". I feel very bad for those who are immigrating to the US to escape the turmoil in their home country. I fear it will be no better for them here. There wa a lot of problems with Reagan but he was the last US politician that truly appreciated Latin Americans.
0:02 this boy should be compensated fully. It’s a disgrace. The contractors should and believe will be found liable. The problem goes far deeper than this one incident. As a Nurse working in a large metro hospital I see immigrants from world wide seeking medical care of all sorts. Who get good healthcare in times like this and worse I might add. I witness immigrants whose families send them here so that they can benefit from such labor all too often. It’s a huge issue in US healthcare and in many services. Let’s hope the child does recover and goes on to live as productive as he is able.
First of all child labor is a problem in every country not just the USA. As for anyone who says a child doesn't deserve to be cared for properly due to a lack of insurance needs their head, re-examined and possibly psychiatric help but sadly, that's how many Americans feel due to an inbred of greed. But on another note, you had commented if you're understaffed, then create more jobs after all, isn't that the American way? Actually, it is not the American Way the American Way is to get as much work ever individual as possible with this few employees as possible for the lowest possible legal wage. in fact, a mini companies love to downsize their employment staff just so they can increase their profits. However I understand where you are coming from because I totally agree with you and everything you spoke of in this video.
Good video and points Ace. I dont see a lot of children working hard labor in NC. In fact, I have never seen it. However, there are a lot of labour going on by people who is not always legal to do so. I would agree with someone elae that posted here, thatbit does not matter who contracted who, in how many steps. It is the responsibility of the contractor that does the actual work to make sure everyone's covered by insurances as well as being legal to work, no matter age or immigration status. I would also go so far, that its the responsibility of the home, or business owner that is having a service done to make sure that before any work commences, the people are covered, not under age and so on. I, who myself is about to move to my 5th country (Sweden, USA, Cyprus, UAE and soon Mexico), knows very well what it is to look for other opportunities than confiding myself in my own country.

It is super sad but the roofing company has no choice to what the workers compensation insurance companies do. And, in fact, due to end stage capitalism in the states, the insurance companies have a LEGAL duty to their shareholders to pay as few claims as possible. If they paid out their shareholders could and would sue. It's all a cluster f designed to make a few people extremely wealthy at ANY cost

Those in favor of illegal immigration just want a supply of poor, desperate children that they can pay pennies on the dollar, Often without any health insurance. The United States should adopt an immigration system similar to Ecuador, where immigrants must first show economic solvency and the ability to support themselves. This would prevent unscrupulous employers in the United States from taking advantage of them.
Sounds like victim blaming to me. Hold companies and employers responsible rather than judging and condemning desperate migrants. Folks migrate for all sorts of reasons, not just for work. Not to mention the incredibly complicated immigration system here actually does include proof of self sustainability. So not sure what you’re going on about there.
