"Bumping hips downward" to start the downswing can be a misleading expression. It all depends on where the hips start from. If the hips are level or pointing upwards (left hip higher than trail hip)at the top of the back swing, you will have a great deal of trouble bumping the hips downwards from there to start the downswing. Rather than bumping the hips downward, it is more like sliding/movong the hips in a downward or descending fashion from the top of the back swing where the trail hip is higher than the leading hip. That is the only way one can "bump" (move or slide downwards) the hips to properly start the downswing. And the bottom of the swing arc is only below the left pec when the left pec laterally moves over the lead ankle at impact for ball turf contact. If the left pec remains where it is at address at impact, a fat shot will result with the club hitting the ground before the ball..
Amazing this is the way it also helps u eliminate early extension too
the stick in the belt loops is always a good one, thnx for the help.
This is the real secret to striking irons. Until you, no one has made this clear. Good work!

What do you think of putting a golf ball under your right foot on the outer side? I've seen that a few times to help keep the weight on the left and help rotate properly
i'll give it a go tomorrow!!
Great drills! Thank you
When to start bumping down? half way back or top of backswing?
Can be done in both 👍🏼
Great content ✅
Off to the range tomoz
For sure, bumping up towards impact certainly doesn't do your back any favors! Agreed, bumping down with a proper hip rotation helps promote a strong weight shift, yet for the most consistent swing we don't want to overdo it. For instance taking a look at Bryon's super-slow motion "Single Plane" swing, he strives to avoid unnecessary movements to hit straighter shots without loosing power:

Can you do this for the driver? When I tilt for the driver my hips do what you are saying in this clip
What's a good timing thought or checkpoint to not run into saggy left knee? Also, I'm trying to wrestle with keeping the right knee flexed on the way back and not get "too low" or straighten a bit...I know more tilt to straighten a bit, but when I do, I can't consistently get the right knee to reflex..I end up keeping it straight and dragging it.
Will this work with driver and 3 woods?
I've been working on the weight transfer and bumping, which made me go into a "reverse pivot" causing fat and thins. My lead knee went to far under me, and i lifted my lead heel to much :/
This instruction seems a lot more simple. Gonna try it out
A traditional hip bump will do that to you for sure
How do you bump your hips down but Don't come over the top and smother the ball?
Try and move the left hip down and left without moving your arms. If done properly, the hips will force your arms to move. Try this with a short iron.
There is always big problem about this kind of hip bumps. Upper body goes too far and shots are thin or fat when you try to recover your shot.
Can you feel as though you’re doing a little squat and turn on transition
Absolutely. Squatting in transition is a byproduct of hip flexion. If you don’t squat via hip flexion, the squat will only hurt your swing
🙂👍
Thanks bud!
My ball striking was terrible because my hips did not rotate properly. Once I began rotating my left pelvis down and back, I was able to compress the ball with more power.
I’m going to be working on this. How do I bump down without throwing my head forward. What should my feel be I guess is what I’m asking? Thanks. I see now. Thanks again.
If you rotate like you in your upswing (upper body tilted towards the target with no weight shift) then you are right. But if you shifted your weight into your trail side a litlle bump upwards will do no harm.
Excellent lesson! New subscriber. Thank you.
I do but then never comes back up and collapses all the way. Any drill how to explode?
Geez this is great!!! ❤
Pre set the bump, then swing without worrying about it, simple
So many wrong videos on you tube telling us bump up the hips in downswing. It is scary. Thanks for listening to you. Please tell if it is also good for driver and woods?
Would you bump left hip up for driver?
where did you get the golf net from?
I practice this every time I'm on the range. My favorite drill to lead the downswing more with the hips and not with your arms as well as understanding how to shift the weight and pressure forward is what I call the Scottie scheffler drill (Probably has another name). Take a normal stance (clubhead rested on the ground in the middle of your stance) but put the ball on your front foot. It will really force you to hit down on the ball as all your weight shifts to your front leg. Helped me a lot with more ball spin, higher trajectory, eliminating thin shots, juicy divots in front of the ball and less fat/duff shots as well as a easier swing which feels a lot smoother and less forced.
Trevino said Hogan taught him to hit the ball with body and not the arms.
would this action cause me to hit the ball super high as well? I need to work on this drill. Im def doing this and for me it's causing lefts and snaps left with woods. I'll start working on this today!
The hips bumping up can absolutely make you hit the ball higher. Bumping the hips down won’t 👍🏼
