Not many people understands how important is the work of Joseph Campbell
Agreed
Nobody understands the depths of Presence
Campbell has a wonderfully joyous and compelling way of explaining the commonalities of spiritual experiences across cultures.
Yggdrasil ! Reading through Masks of God now, best work on myths and symbols I've ever read. Makes you understand what all the esoteric knowledge is actually about, but they won't spill those secrets as easily and intelligent as Campbell does, such a legend.
Yeah, now read through Frazier's fourteen volume set, "The Golden Bow." Use the index. Search words, concepts.
He was the best.
Remember reading it in '71. Totally changed everything. Try "The Idea of the Holy" by Otto and Evelyn Underhill's "Mysticism."
@@jamesbarlow6423 thank you James! Will look them up ^^

I first saw this program in my 20's. I'm now in my 60's. I was so awed by the interaction between Moyers and Campbell that I enrolled in college, then graduate school and became an Anthropologist myself--just like Campbell.
I am retired now after 20+ years as an Archaeologist, which I chose as my specialty in Anthropology because I wanted to be able to study the material culture of those who came before us, along with their mythologies that gave their lives meaning. Today, I stand in awe of all of our ancestors, who tamed our wild planet and made human existence worth the telling...
"The planet is a wild place, and always will be." - Gary Snyder, poet, anthropologist.
Awesome! What were some of the best moments of your journey, or the best projects you worked on?
Joseph Campbell was a wonderful teacher of Mythology. He knew when he was a boy of 14 what he wanted to do in life..... and he did it . His whole life was immersed in Mythology throughout the world and his wonderful PBS series with Bill Moyer here called " The Power of Myth " is indelibly imprinted on my brain.Thank you , Joseph Campbell .
It’s been about 30 years since I watched the program?! An amazing teacher and human being
I love Joseph Campbell 🧘
What a great speaker he was. Loved him then and now. The common thread that links us all together is our humanity.
This dude was Amazing!.. Many people can learn & understand life through his teachings!
Campbell talks of 'this moment being one of eternity' with the interviewer looking in complete bafflement / bewilderment at what is being said to him.
Coincidentally Campbell is correct, we are watching this discussion years into the future, and this moment has been captured as a forever-digital ephemeral and archival record.
God, I hope I don’t have to live this life forever.
I don't think that's a look of "complete bafflement / bewilderment", it's a look of awe. If you watch the series, Moyers is constantly blown away by Campbell. In spite of this, he hangs in and asks great question after great question. Moyer's work in this series is a gift to all of us, Joseph Campbell included. With his remarkable skill, he pulls wisdom out of Campbell that would have otherwise never been seen by people like me. This series literally changed the direction of my life.
THE ETERNAL NOW IS......ALWAYS A TEMPORAL MOMENT AND AN INFINITY ♾️ ✨️ MOVING IN SPACE AND TIME ✨️ SIMULTANEOUSLY ON
I really like how he described time.
The midpoint of infinity is everywhere.
I am so pleased these clips are available to listen to, to remind you of important things, to teach you, to guide you and for the opportunity to learn. Thank you for making them available.
One of the great minds of the 20th century.
I didn’t know Black Elk spoke of hoops. I talk about hoops interwoven in my new book about reading the symbols and organization of the universe like the book it is, like the structure of meaning meant to be read by the creator. ❤ He spoke well. I too feared my own self, felt the fear of others in the things I could say or do. I know that feeling. Thanks for posting this. ❤ It’s not insanity to be misunderstood. ❤ To be something surprising or unexpected. Your disbelief and failures should not be projected as another’s insanity. When people cannot understand they fear. They do not understand their own future. What they do not understand and fear they push away, they destroy. Their own weaknesses destroy their own future in their ignorance. What I would like to tell the world is that fear borne of ignorance is a message of your own destruction to your self by that very ignorance and here we have a personal hoop. The feed-back from the external running from internal feelings or issues. All evil comes from the misinterpretation of internal signals. Chaos seeping in and twisting things. The obstacles are never out there, they are within. You are the obstacle to the future of the world in your ignorance. So it’s pretty important that you recognize that. It’s part of why we are here and our real work.
Beautiful.
This kept coming up and coming up, so I watched it and it was perfect. And I thought, yeah, the Universe definitely was poking me there. Then it came up again hours later, so I watched it again. Spot on. Just what I need. We all are One. All the hoops, One Hoop.
I know , it seems 'intuitive' at times . coincidence ? glad I`m not the only one who notices .
@@TimMaloneyNMactor It made me pick up Black Elk Speaks again.

Thanks for the archives.
This has blown my brain basket wide open. 🤯
Damn, that was deep.
Yeah, deeply stupid
I’m a journalist deeply interested in spiritual topics and it is a treat to watch Bill Moyers conducting these interviews. The kind of thing I would love to to too

"Joseph Campbell, though his vast understanding of mythology, speaks of the enlightenment state in which one recognizes that reality, ultimately, is the silent stillness in which exists everything that mysteriously flows from it." - Vic Shayne, author, 13 Pillars of Enlightenment
What a load of shite
Remember those times the power of the myth listed our day and bill MOYERS intelligent news on the matters on Sunday. PBS ! BEST EVER REPORTER WE SO NEED NOW!
Beautiffully explained!
One of many hoops 🖤 Thank you
What a mind.
This guy really figured it out the secret to life 🙏
Close your eyes and count to 1 - that's how long forever feels.
(I saw this somewhere else on UA-cam recently - it rings true here)
Emerson said something like " God is a circle of infinite circumference and whose center is everywhere".
Awesome indeed.

Subtítulos en español por favor! Gracias!
wow man profound!
Moyers peeking around ossified scientific images of God trying to grasp Campbell's open fluid following his bliss.
He explained it like no other the interviewer was like a deer in headlights.
Bill Moyers is awesome, and his credulity did this whole gorgeous conversation a great service.
For a series of interviews of this caliber between these two great men would NEVER happen today. So be respectful and Google Bill Moyers.
I wish these videos were longer.
Joseph Campbell and Bill Moyers recorded many hours on mythology. These are widely available. Based on Campbell's book on the subject.
Por favor, pongan subtitulos en español; la sabiduria de Campbell no solo debe ser restringida a angloparlantes.
The birth of a symbol is the essence of humanity.
Why edit out the punch line... You are the center of the universe and so am I.
He is wonderful. In 2015...I met 2 Brian Campbell's in 2 days in Hawaii. I thought of Joseph Campbell in my mind, heart and Soul. I was born March 11th in Bethlehem. God made me Prophetic. God is not divorced from Science. My Middle name is Souix. Sue. Tzu.
Save us oh holy messiah
@@Protogonas I like your style, Austin.
I was born on March 11th as was my mother. Incidentily m two daughters were born on March 9th, 3 yrs apart.
@@justinakavanagh3058 yeah! that is astounding. The probabilities of that. My God. That's alot of intuitive power. Psychics. People accuse me of being a psychic. Probably you too.
@@justinakavanagh3058 A few weeks later I was walking with Brian Campbell #2 when Brian Campbell #1 walked up to us. I stood between them and said, Brian Campbell meet Brian Campbell. Brian Campbell meet Brian Campbell.
For a minute I thought, am I in the matrix? I even met 2 men named Tony Justice and Mathew Justice within an hour of each other. Mathew Justice had just arrived in Oahu the day before as a human rights lawyer. Hawaii is magical. 🤣..So are you.
I watched this whole series. Not once is there ever any mention of a dogma
Wow
According to my research, and using scientific, theological and philosophical methods, the "hoops" envisioned by this Sioux boy may represent cycles of time.
Western Civilization has a tendency to perceive the passing of time in a linear fashion, while Eastern Civilizations perceive the passing of time in circuits. Both concepts can be harmonized by using a lengthy segment of coil spring as a demonstration tool.
Civilizations come and go, and life goes in cycles; and what happened to the Sioux Nation is a mere microcosm of what humanity has experienced since the awakening of our earliest progenitors.
💘
All of these clips put together are interesting.... but.... could you not post the whole interviews?
Are you guys ever going to post some long form videos?
interesting .
As I have re-listened to these interviews over the years, I have realized that Moyers just didn't get it. He was too trapped in the Christian metaphor, as Campbell would phrase it, to understand.
Or maybe Moyers is wise enough to adopt a posture or mask that he knows much of his audience wears. He’s from the south and he knows his tribe. His bewilderment and attention and ultimate acceptance of Campbell’s teaching is the arc he’s guiding his audience through.
Can anyone imagine Putin or Trump comprehending any of this. There is a great gap in our people's growth and capacity to embrace these wonderful ideas. Wake up everyone!
Both of them should be perfectly capable of comprehending this.
In theory yes but have you ever tried to have a conversation with a Psychopathic narcissist? I recommend it, from a safe distance

Campbell is our most distinguished psychologist/psychiatrist. An uber American born Jung.
Did he just flip off the entire universe?
Release the whole thing, videos, talks, etc. Catch up with the times and collect your money with viewers who respect the Campbell name, which you don't.
Is it "real" or is it "mythological?"
Why are all the good ones dead

the interviewer didn't get it
Bill Moyers asking for clarity, is meant for the viewers to understand it as well.
@@kathyashby6019 yes.
Kathy Ashby. No he didn't get it, so he Couldn't give Anybody clarity.
@@jaybell1390 It was Campbell giving clarity. Moyers was teasing it out. These conversations are just that: conversations. Moyers did a great job. He didn't need to be the expert; Campbell is the expert.
Science doesn't determine my perception of reality.
My belief in Christianity is the exact belief and that he is talking about I see no difference
I love Joseph Campbell, don't get me wrong, but he totally didn't answer Bill's question lol.
Like any good Zen master, he answers the question in the student's heart, not the foolish one on his lips.
He scrubbed, scrubbed and scrubbed some more but the stone didn't turned into the philosopher stone. So he finally gave up and threw it away.
He answered the question very well. Watch the video again.
Joseph Campbell was a purveyor of commercially romanticized fantasy "mythology", as compared with scholars such as Weston Le Barre, Mircea Eliade, Carl Jung, Wade Davis
Not even remotely correct

Central Mountain? hahaha Central of his land not the world....
Don't want to offend his fans but Campbell trades in "spiritual" bromides, banalities and vulgar generalizations. In this clip he defines "the mountain" several times and even Moyers is confused and befuddled. Watered down and sweetened Jung who was himself watered down. . . manna from heaven for desperate housewives.
That's the sense I got. Just wants book sales and free dinners.
