This was the most epic boot sound back when most of us were coming from SNES & Genesis. Hearing this boom out of the living room's sound system, you knew this was the next level of gaming.
Something so nice about hearing this again, yet so sad at the same time. We're getting old, folks. I wish I could go back to these days. A simpler time.
just take it apart and thoroughly clean the insides. I collect Playstations and refurbish them. its easy as cake bro. I have a Playstation 2 that Totally would not work at all. I took it apart piece by piece and cleaned every square inch of it. Put it back together and BOOM! Works like new.
This literally brought a tear to my eyes. I must admit that a lot of those games didn't age very well but my childhood was awesome thanks to Sega Genesis and PS1 😢
can't forget castlevania: symphony of the night. Absolute gem of a game that's still fun to play today (albeit smacking you in the face with the classic "We're not going to tell you how to play this" routine)
I feel the same way. I guess it has a lot to do with the deep booming sound, which gives a sense of great power and vastness. The high pitched chimes and are a nice touch, contrasting beautifully with the aforementioned sound.
I remember when I was a kid playing Sega Genesis at my buddies house and we had just found out that Sony was going to put out a new console called the Playstation. And guess what? It's going to use CD's and not cartridges. We were so pumped. I remember my dad bringing one of these bad boys home for the first time and hearing this sound. Those magical memories will stay with me forever.

Hearing and seeing this every time before playing games like Resident Evil 1 & 2, Silent Hill, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy Tactics, Parasite Eve, Mega Man X4, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, MediEvil, and Metal Gear Solid was just perfection and I always think of those exact games and memories associated with the startup sound. I truly miss the late 90's of gaming, but thankfully I've kept all of my games and can revisit them anytime.

fedor p Well that's true in my case it probably was 1 speaker out of my little dinker TV I used. But my understanding is that "mono" means one sound not necessarily one speaker. So multiple speakers would receive the same exact inputs edit - over complicated link explaining it much better than I could www.mcsquared.com/mono-stereo.htm edit 2 - also the speakers wouldn't be mono, the input from the psx is. So that was poorly worded
Just found out that the chime and startup actually have a function and it's not just there to be a pleasant sound. Apparently the composer used this iconic startup sound to check the 'health' of the system. Ain't that neat!

Of all the highs of gaming over the years: first time playing Super Mario 3, hearing actual spoken dialogue in X-Wing, FMV in Myst, the jump into 3D with GTA3, graphics and worlds that just get more and more realistic and immersive ... it's this start up sound that rules them all.
Still the most impressive startup sound of any console IMO. Sony's debut. I also think the Windows 95 startup sound by Brian Eno has never been equaled.
Window XP had a great startup sound too. Windows 2000 has the best sound in pure musical terms but its not as satisfying as XP. The way it comes into harmony is pretty classy.
Windows 7 is the one I enjoy the most because I've been running Win 7 for 13 years xD Nothing like hearing that jingle after a reformat or installing new hardware.
The best thing is I still have the PS1 Slim up in my room and I can plug that thing right in the home theater and shake my whole neighborhood with real music.
Takafumi fujisawa created this sound making his own samples using a Roland S-550. All the sounds you are hearing is basically being live from the sound chip inside the PS1.
I must say this has got to be easily in my top 5 sounds that can just make me feel extreme nostalgia.....this is as close to going back in time we will ever get
This makes me so happy and sad, I’m 26 yrs old now and I was around 4 or 5 when I got my PS1, I remember the demo disk had crash on it, that game literally changed my life and made me love video games the rest of my life. I wish I could relive the feeling of booting this up for the first time.
