Fixing a Wii Disk Drive...Somehow?

- In another lot of broken consoles, I picked up this Nintendo Wii. It is rejecting any disc inserted into it. I'll take you along my troubleshooting journey to try and figure out what's going on.
This one is a bit of a head scratcher. We'll take apart this disk drive, inspect the mechanics closer to understand how it works, and fix everything...somehow? - Ігри
My Wii does this as well but the drive makes wonderfully crunchy and squeaky noises as it moves. I think it's time for a replacement drive.
Probably your gear box. I was able to set my gears back into place.

Thank you for the tutorial, my wii wouldn't spin the disc and kick out the disc just like yours. I ripped it apart following your steps and after some troubleshooting I found the culprit: a small chunk of plastic preventing the disc from spinning. Thanks again, big help 👍
Actually works, it's just have to be readjusted from a good fall to the floor. No components are burned
Thank you. I followed your guide to successfully dismantle the Wii. Thankfully I knew my problem wasn't as mysterious as yours once I found what was obviously a soup ladel from a doll's kitchen set sitting in the drive mechanism.

Very interesting problem and solution. My old Wii doesn't play Brawl and only Brawl, but oddly enough it works on my 2nd Wii. I did take my 1st Wii into a carpenter work shop where my boy scout troop had a night of playing videogames. And my Wii got caked in saw dust over the years and I recently cleaned it out after it being dirty for about 5 years. But brawl still didn't work, I'm think of taking the disk five apart and cleaning it and your video is going to be a great tool for it.
have you tried to see if it isnt just your copy of brawl? maybe try a different brawl disc.
brawl is one of the few multi layered discs which when the wii stops reading those, its a sign that the lens in the laser needs to be cleaned, open up your wii until you remove the heat shroud and once the disc drive is exposed, just squeeze a cotton swab in between the drive to swab down the lens, it worked for me

I bought a Wii on eBay and when a disc was inserted it couldn’t be read. I followed your video and took it apart. To my surprise the inside looked brand new not a single dust bunny what was causing the issue was a DS Mario n Luigi game cartridge it also looked brand new. I removed it re assembled it works great thanks for the video.
Nice to hear. Today my wii from ebay arrived. The seller didn't mention the disc drive isn't working. I'm looking forward to fix this.
I have the issue of the disc being clamped down (the gears on the side are working) but it then spits it out twice without spinning it up. I've tried 2 different wii games with the same result. I'm not sure what the issue is.
I’m 99% sure I have identified the exact cause of this problem. On the mechanism on the top of the disk drive there is a pin on the other end of the middle lever, this pin is what actually triggers the switch that moves everything into place (part shown at 5:38). This pin has to be exactly lined up with the hole on the switch. If it is not exactly lined up the pin may still push the switch, but it won’t put it completely in to place most of the time. So if someone ever opened the disc drive or if the Wii ever had a hard fall the pin would get displaced. To fix it, all you have to is be sure to line up the pin when putting the top on the disc drive. You can check if it is lined up by shimmying the lever in the middle to see if it can move a significant amount, if it can it is not in the right place.
Figures the minute you turn off the camera and effect other portions of the mechanism that mechanically its begins operating as wished for. Hope all your future repairs have as favorable results as this one. Very best wishes.
I bought a used Wii with the original game cube disc drive, it worked perfectly fine but I had to replace it because some of my Wii games were dual layered discs which needed a stronger laser to read them. I turned it on the other week after a year of not playing it and now the replacement disc drive I had installed stopped working, I have no idea what happened
I cant seem to get the stupid black screws near the sd card slot. Do I need a certain screwdriver?
Thanks for these videos. Had the same problem, took it apart, just cleaned everything, put it back, and mine also mysteriously works now. Seems like a needlessly complicated mechanism. But anyway, appreciate the helpful videos!
Yeah. I found put the entire right side of the top mechanism isn’t actually necessary at all.

hi is it possible for the Wii to boot and reach its homebrew channel without its game drive? Actually, I want to remove its drive to reduce its weight (light and portable).. kindly update me thank you.
Sir, I have a Wii, I accidentally stepped on it and I pressed a little hard. Did something happen. Is the outer casing made of a hard material that does not bend?
I have that problem too and its not making the right noise when I hit the power button or but in a game
Not sure if you are still active, but my wii just suddenly stopped reading the discs. The drive clamps down fine and the disc starts to spin, the laser clearly turns on, but after a few seconds, the disc stops spinning. Think it is just faulty laser?
Dude. My main channel has 460 some subs and you only have 200 some. You deserve more than 200!
I did everything you did. I knew there was items jammed in the drive. I found a 2 discs (Gene Wilder Double feature), a tortilla chip, a nickel, a quarter, and a few stickers inside the drive. Toddlers' curiosity can be very unintentionally destructive and creative. But now I know how to disassemble the Wii and it works. I had a hell of a time getting the same piece that fell out back in the right way. I couldnt figure out which way the metal clip was supposed to go but it fixed the problem and works great now. Great vid.
Where can I get a tool kit for this?
My wii did this. I came home one day stuck a disc in, and it worked fine... for 2 disc inserts.
My wii works like once every week and th rest of the time it does the same thing as this video it did a disc today now nothing else will work
hey i have this one problem with a wii a recently bought. the wii itself reads disks. it doesnt make a clicking sounds nor is there any grinding. but the diskdrive is just extremely loud. is this normal? does anyone now how to resolve this?
Exact same problem but never found why certain levers jammed at the point where the disk was pressed down on the spinner motor - after 2 hours working on it I left the main cover off and manually gave the key linkage a little help when it needed it - after seeing your video where you were looking more upstream for the jam, I may give it another try but for now it works with my assistance.
Try tying a knot with a fishing line around the white bracket and carefully route it outside the disk drive.
When the Wii struggles to read disks pull the fishing line and it’ll pull the bracket on the side into place and read it like normal.
Weird and jank fix but, mine snapped a piece of plastic clean off that helps the motor on the side move that bracket into place. So the only solution I could come up with was tying a fishing line to the bracket and routing it outside the Wii.
I’d highly recommend wrapping the end of the line coming out of the Wii with electrical tape or duct tape so the fishing line doesn’t cut your hand when you have to inevitably use it.
The fishing line knot comes undone once every so often but, it functions for about 6months or so b4 doing so.
Technically you could run multiple lines through the front tied to the same white bracket on the side but, it’s personal preference.

How noisy wii is normally when insertinga disc in it? I tried my a second hand wii, and the drive spins really loud. When there is no disk it is quiet as a mouse.
This might be a little late, but disk vibration noises are fixed by adjusting the spindle magnet.
If you look at the mechanism that clamps the disc in this video, you’ll notice the middle bit is held on by two black screws. If the console gets bumped or dropped, the magnet can become misaligned with the drive motor, causing the disc to vibrate and make noise.
To fix it, insert a disc (when the Wii is disassembled) so that the clamp drops down, then turn off the Wii. With the disc still inserted, loosen those two screws and let the spindle magnet assembly float back to its normal resting position, and retighten the screws.
It might take a couple tries to get it aligned correctly but that should fix the problem.
My Wii downstairs just won't let me play any game at all. I tried to play Cars the Game, but it just won't work. I'm sure I could fix it. It's going to be so hard though.

I mean honestly, in my experience fixing things.. if you take something apart and put it back together, even if you didn't change or even clean anything, sometimes it just starts working again for no reason. The more complicated a mechanism the more likely this phenomenon seems to to occur.
my wii doesnt "eat" the disc, what can i do?
I do not know, try to give it a careful slap?
Inspect the teeth of the gears in the gearbox, assemble back together, and then it will hopefully work?… I’m praying it does work for my Wii when I try tomorrow.😅🙏

I just did the most idiotic thing. I took apart my wii and now I can’t remember what parts go where. I have taken apart a ps3 and an Xbox 360 before and put them back together, but the wii is a bit more complex. I may have also taken apart the disc drive, but it was making a bad noise and I thought something was wrong with it. I think I should just buy a new disc drive. And maybe some GameCube ports so I can play GameCube games on it.
I just decided to put up my Wii again and play some Guitar Hero. It all worked out fine. Then I shut it off and ran into the disk reading error once I tried to start it up again. I have no idea what caused the error, since I didn't pick it up or move it at all (besides from taking it from it's box and hooking it up to my TV, which worked initially) I am hopeful that nothing got whacked and maybe my well over a decade old console just needs a bit of love and a good cleaning... also I have absolutly no talent with this sort of stuff so I am shitting myself thinking about open this dinosaure up and maybe killing it for good by accident

Mine was also not reading discs. Just fiddling around, I tried inserting and hanging onto the disc halfway and not letting it get pulled in right away. And then after a second let go and let the disc go in. Somehow that fixed it! I'm guessing it was a similar issue. Like some mechanism needed to be reset.

you could also use homebrew software to load games from an external hdd :)

@@akac1 yes, but I haven't looked at it in a while. My parents' Wii started having disk drive problems so I am planning to install USB loader and buy an external HDD next week. But as far as I remember it is not very hard.

This was happening with my Wii as well. Unfortunately one of the pieces of plastic snapped clean off that works to push that white bracket bit on the side.
The thing I have personally found to work is tying a knot around that bracket with some fishing line and feeding it through the bottom of the disk drive.
Just be careful that you don’t get the line entangled in other gears when you’re routing it.
Wrap the end of the line that’s coming out of the Wii in electrical/duct tape so you don’t cut up your hand when you are pulling the fishing line fix.
When the Wii starts making the noise simply pull the fishing line and it’ll move that bracket and the Wii will function as normal.
Unfortunately a replacement disk drive wasn’t an option in my case and drilling into the Wii’s outer shell to give access seems like a terrible dust issue waiting to happen.
So just use fishing line and think outside the box!
My will games don’t work so I going to buy a new disk drive.
