Rex. I was extremely impressed by how you immediately knew it was a Speyside from Glenfiddich with an uncommon finish. Truely the greatest pallet on UA-cam
I'm so glad you guys actually reviewed something I requested! I got home from my 12 hour night shift with my own glass of fire & cane to discover not only had Whiskey Vault returned to it's regularly scheduled programming, but that you were reviewing Fire & Cane! Such a great way to end the day.
Welcome back. Enjoying the blind tasting portion of the video.....often I find most accuracy comes from going with your first instinct, which Rex nailed. Well done!
The rubber note might actually come from the rum. Daniel, you mentioned you like Ron zacapa solera. Ron zacapa is sweetened quite a bit while the rum of this cask is probably unsweetened. Also: obligatory mention that Ron zacapa 23 is decepting custommers by displaying a big 23 while just the oldest component is 23 years old.
Glad to have you back. I didn’t realize how much my daily break of watching impacted my mood until the show was gone for a week. Glad you got some reprieve and are reenergized
I received a bottle of this as a gift. A very nice gift. I really enjoyed this and had to buy another. Second bottle this week you reviewed that is in my collection.
@@wanderingsurf2842 Just saw on Jim Murray's whisky bible he rated B16 only 86 and B17 97, so there is a bit of variance in batches. I can confirm 17 is very nice indeed.
I did a tasting comparison between Fire and Cane with Balvenie 14 yr Caribbean Cask. The Rum Cask used in Glenfiddich is a dark rum which is more molasses the Balvenie is a light rum so less sugar and sweetness. We also found by the third sip the peat became background almost invisible flavor. Price point in South Carolina is $50.00 for Glenfiddich and $70.00 for Balvenie.
I've got a bottle of this on the go at the minute. The toffee hit me as soon as I opened the bottle. I didn't get any smoke on the nose, but the toffee sweetness, and a hint of smoke on the taste. Slight hint of salt. Once the glass was empty, I was getting a chemical scent that I my unrefined palate can only describe as fresh vomit. I'm sure it will open up more to me as I work through the bottle.
I picked this up recently as I saw it in the store and thought it looked interesting and popped it as a celebration whisky. I loved it. My friends who aren't Scotch fans loved it. I was like I really need to check if Whiskey Vault did something on it (you guys are my favorite reviewers and match my tastes most closely) and it seems like you had as a fun of time as I did.
This stuff blows my mind. If I smell it from a slight distance, it's smoky and earthy peat. If I stick my nose in the glass, it's sweet green apple. If I sip it like hot coffee, it's again earthy, smoky, even almost tar like yet sweet. If I swish it back and forth on my tongue for a second, it's burnt sugar, toasted marshmallow, caramel, green apple and then finishes with green apple and earth. Very interesting!
Didn't read the title but knew right away from the cork! Love this bottle. To me the rum is toffy. It comes the same way in the angel's envy rum finish. Also super fun thing to do with this: Pour a small amount of a high peat scotch and a pure highland. Smell one then smell Fire and Cane. You will find it changes completely depending on what you smelled first.
If you all can get your hands on it, Glenfiddich 21 Reserva Rum Cask was the precursor to this. From what I can tell, they felt they didn't quite get all the elements of the rum that they wanted the first time around, so they tried again with the Fire and Cane. Based on your review, I guess that they still didn't capture what they were after. Could be an interesting comparison though.
It's good to have you guys back! I thought story time was going to be in some other room, like the filming would stop just long enough for you to walk to some other room to sit and do story time. I don't remember for sure though! Great review!
A bit of some fine "editing" on the Fallout Shelter opening logo with Herb Alpert tickling the dusty parts of my eardrums at 9:37...nicely done. I don't know why I still play that game, I guess because I just haven't deleted it yet. Welcome back guys!
Welcome back boys. Hope you enjoyed your time away. Ps. Rex you are doing well and looking warm and happy for it being a trillion degrees below zero outside.
I was very impressed with this one. I think it would make a good introduction to peat since it doesnt have the medicinal notes and brine like Islay has. Probably gonna pick one up.
Welcome back guys.. great job Rex on the sock challenge, we'd all love to see the boastfull levels you can achieve if you get the next one correct too.. a correction to what Daniel said - including Speyside, isn't it 6 regions in Scotland, not 5??
Love this new format by the way. Really cool having one go in blind. Wish there was a way for Daniel to prep for any of 5/10 whiskeys, and then have some 3rd part put one from those in the sock, so both go in blind, and then after they know what it is, Daniel pulls out the research notes for story time.
Definitely liked that review of Glenfiddich's Fire & Cane. My take is it is great whisky, but if you use too much water you can make it dangerously undrinkable. Cheers!
Hey guys Just wanted to say my wife and I love the show. "The boys are back in town" is the song that comes to my mind for your return. Btw Rex you really know how to act like a Super-Villian during Rex week .I also get a "Your Highness" movie vibe with your mooch voice.
Welcome back! I have a question for you two. I have a bachelor party this weekend where we are trying to do a scotch tasting. What is the best way to refresh your pallet in between different whiskeys to experience the closest you can to what they have to offer.
John Chaplick hey there not sure if I'm going crazy or something but I think I recall them saying vodka neat is pretty good, especially if you are tasting high proof Whiskey, I am however a noob so hopefully a more knowledgeable should will correct me if I'm wrong or just give better advice.
I think this stuff is super tasty. I do like rhum, I like peated whiskey, and I do like Glenfiddich. It's a bit too expensive for me to buy it when not on offer, but I enjoy it a lot.
So by total coincidence, my girlfriend and I are actually planning a trip to Islay in June. It's going to be around my birthday and her favourite gun is Botanist so she is keen to visit Bruichladdich. Might actually see you out there
Hey Rex and Daniel, would you be interested in a vodka that was aged 6 months in a barrel? I went on a distillery tour of Cardinal Sin in St. Louis and they said they are one of very few who do that. Thought it was interesting, if not no big deal, I love the content and might even come down for a class as some point in the future.
What weekend are you guys going in June? The fiance and I will be getting married at the cliffs and then traveling to Islay to visit most of the distilleries. Touching down in Dublin on the 9th.
As someone who is considering donating a bottle I've had multiple questions buzzing around in my head. How often do you guys get bottles donated and is there a separate storage area for donations since I doubt it all fits in the vault? Do you often get duplicates and what do you do with them? Receiving as many bottles as you do, will you ever be able to catch up and get to all the donated whiskey or will you instead eventually drown in the amount of magnificence being sent to you? Cheers guys!
This Glenfiddich expression blows my fucking mind to be quite brutally honest...... Just a mind bending experience of complexity.... LOVE this stuff------slowly chewing through my now 2nd bottle and may quite possibly just get a 3rd in place of what I typically purchase from the Islay region to have a nice peated malt around. Good God this is a fine one!!!!! SLAINTE!!!
This was a really smooth blended single malt (oxymoron). I truly did enjoy this. They have an IPA version as well which I am interested in trying next. Have you had the IPA version of this?
It’s a compound found in things like wood and leaves usually found in red wines from the stems can also get from over steeping tea. It’s mostly noticeable from its astringent mouth feel, with descriptors being dry, scratchy, and gripping. More a feel than a taste. Falls under the category of umami than one of our traditional taste sensations.
Tannic is that things you get if you suck on a black teabag after you made a cup of tea. That astringent sourness that twists your face. It's present in coffee ,tea , wines, etc.
Hey Daniel and Rex. I know you guys have a lot of donated whiskies to review, but i was just wondering if my money donation for buying whiskey is among those not yet reviewed?
I've got it held for a specific purchase. I'm saving it for a Friday so it can be on one of the rare days. It may or not be a special edition of Black Art :-)
Dear Daniel, Rex, and fellow whiskey drinkers, I'm hoping one of you has (some) knowledge about lizards, iguanas actually, and can help me out. I have owned a female iguana for about 3 years now, and have recently decided to breed her. I purchased a rather expensive male iguana in hopes of raising babies to sell. I put them together, and while she is showing all the signs of wanting to mate, he is uninterested. I've tried changing the temperature, lighting, diet, everything. Should I offer him some whiskey? Am I doing something wrong? Or does he have a reptile dysfunction?
Hey guys, LOVE the channel! My girlfriend and I like to go to a bar and order a whiskey we have never tried before to see if it would be a good one to buy down the line. Unfortunately, while we can find a lot of standard whiskeys varieties (laphroaig 10 year, Lagavulen 16, Greenspot, etc...) It can be difficult to find other expressions of these we may like. We also find it hard to try things like Japanese Whiskeys, such as Nikka or Habiki Harmony. I think we would like them, but we have been burned before buying a bottle we thought we'd like, and instantly regret paying extra and liking the base expression better, or not paying enough and wish we dropped the extra 10-20$ on a better version. Do you have any tips we could try to pick out to help us find our next favorite whiskey? THANKS!
Rex. I was extremely impressed by how you immediately knew it was a Speyside from Glenfiddich with an uncommon finish.

I love that the Fallout please stand by was used
I'm glad Daniel called out the rubber note, because this one for me had definite notes of "prom night"
I like the new format because I feel like there are a little more tasting notes offered.
The rubber note might actually come from the rum. Daniel, you mentioned you like Ron zacapa solera. Ron zacapa is sweetened quite a bit while the rum of this cask is probably unsweetened.

I love the energy you guys look for juvenated and revitalized. I bought a cast strength redbreast 12 it's half gone and only been a week
That's a stellar whiskey! I have B1/17 and B1/18. Haven't touched the 18 yet but 17 is superb. Great choice.

Have you have the 16
@@nathanrose4322 No Nathan. I'm sure it's a good one too though, they are fairly consistent.
I have the B1/16. Opened it, unfortunately it was at the end of a flight night and I couldn't properly appreciate it. Will try again soon.

You can totally tell which guy worked 75 hrs and which went down to 1 job and got things in his personal life sorted. It is ridiculously clear 😆
The Spirit Monk[e]y is exceedingly joyous at your safe return.
Have been trying unsuccessfully to get my hands on a bottle of this since I first read about it. Sounds delicious. Thanks for reviewing it, gentlemen!
Good to have you guys back.
