- Have you ever thought about selling your entire collection? As a long-term collector, it’s something many of us have considered at some point. In this video, I dive into the reasons why collectors might feel this way and share my own experiences and thoughts.
From selling everything to restarting with modern releases, to stepping away entirely due to lost interest, or even consolidating into a few extraordinary pieces, there are many paths a collector might take when these feelings arise.
If you’ve been collecting for years, maybe you’ve already achieved your goals or feel outpaced by rising markets and changing trends. Whatever the reason, these thoughts are more common than you might think.
Let’s discuss:
✔️ Have you ever felt like selling everything?
✔️ What keeps you motivated as a collector?

I’ve debated this a lot but when I look back, there’s not much I regret buying but there’s a lot I regret selling
@@Frosty-kg4sm this has always been the reason I hardly sell anything! 😩 I’ve seen soooo many people regret selling
Great video. My long term goals largely now fall into the sealed product and graded card category. I have definitely thought about selling it all, to free up money and space. I’ve actually consolidated most of the sets / collections that I no longer found any enjoyment in pursuing (eg eeveelutions post-evolving skies), and re-focused my money into collecting card arts that I genuinely enjoy looking at (full art trainers), or sets that are fun and relatively cheap to complete (movie card sets or VS Series). Sure, I regret selling some cards that have since doubled or even tripled in price, but it’s a lesson for the future. It’s taught me not to act on fleeing impulses and just list everything on eBay when the thought crosses my mind.
Ah nice one, I think that's a no brainer when you can find equal or more enjoyment else where but cheaper! Yeh that's it, I pretty much go off art now as well and just buy things that I think look nice and not just whats trending on whatever. Also I think if you do sell anything that later goes up in price the chances are you probably then picked up other cards with the money that may have also gone up anyway so it sort of cancels out really.
We've sold our van gogh pikachu! We had no intentions to sell it before, but the price was too high to not let it go. It allowed us to get a few other cards that we've wanted for a while, though! 🎉
Good call!
ah congrats! yeh seems like a no brainer when it shoots up so much in a short amount of time!
SMPratte used to say something along the lines of "Sell what you know you can get back". His point being that most cards are readily available but if you have something that doesn't come up very often then remember that you might never see another one. I guess in his case that probably meant an Illustrator Pikachu or something equally insane. 😂
This is definitely worth thinking about at the moment with the modern Pokemon boom. Not a bad time to cash in. I'm almost certain that vintage Pokemon will break out of it's slump so I'd be cautious about selling that right now. I suppose it depends what you have but there's also certain vintage cards that are a b*tch to get in the UK.
Weiss is so hard to make decisions on because honestly it could do absolutely anything in the future. It could easily fizzle out in the west but I could equally see it going insane because of the amount of new eyes on anime.
Are you going to go Prismatic hunting tomorrow? I'm tempted to have a look. Not even sure where will stock it in the UK, maybe Smyth's.
Yeh tbf I think all my pokemon collection is easy to get but just expensive. Yeh that’s it maybe more aimed to trophy cards for sure and I don’t have them haha
Yeh I mean tbh who knows what’s gonna happen. Maybe modern calms back down when they over print and scalpers disappear or maybe people then move from modern to vintage? Who knows, vintage is getting some traction and more is selling more often but nothing like modern ofc right now.
Yeh I agree with Weiss it’s anyone’s guessing game honestly! Depends how the other new English anime tcgs do really and if they stick around or not along with what bushiroad do as well.
Yeh I popped to a symths not far from me at mid day and they had a sign up that they were already sold out. I have the PC ETBs turn up today at least!
Great thought provoking subject, I was an adult at the first ever Pokemon Fair in May 2000 at Epsom Racecourse, my wife was a nanny who looked after 2 boys, and since seeing masses of kids going wild over this new craze, I thought these might be valuable one day, so started buying packs. I stopped at gym heroes and started collecting (modern) again in 2020. I've NEVER sold a card, only swapped. My children (who weren't interested) will inherit my collection.
Wow thats so interesting thanks for sharing that! That's a surprise that your children weren't that interested! That's amazing you never once sold any of it! Not even tempted to grade some of your cards you kept all that time?
@@PokeMikeI've never graded a card (I really should). I do have a small amount of graded.
Debating this right now 😂 sold most of it due to 2 shitty years, I'm like do I just say bollocks and do the rest. Can always buy the new stuff and restart and bin of the old stuff that's out of fashion. Keep 2/3 items that longterm may go to levels that add back up to what's gone.
Must add getting 55% 60% of the value from a big store might always make me keep it 😂
yeh exactly that! Just keep a few special bits and then buy new stuff you are interest in more. It's tempting but honestly I don't know haha
@PokeMike if either of us do it we must report to the other a month later how we feel 😅
The total value of my collection is not life changing money or taking up a lot of space so I’ve never felt the urge to sell it. Plus I did sell some cards in 2018 and regretted it since I didn’t put the money to good use. Obviously if a major life crisis happened I might have to sell but I like to keep things in check so that doesn’t happen.
BTW I do sell cards I have no attachment to but I call those extras rather than part of my collection.
How much would you say is life changing?
@monkey39128 Enough to buy a house outright. 😉
But realistically if I had a single card worth over £10k I’d seriously consider selling it.
Will you do any Azur Lane vol 2 openings?
Nah I didn't get any vol 2 in sorry!
