J Dilla Inspired Techniques
In this vid, we examine a technique from the legendary Jay Dilla where he uses 2 sets of hihats. This is demonstrated on the mpc 2000xl but the concept can be transferred to any hardware or software.
This is only one of many J Dilla techniques, but if you listen to his production on Fantastic Vol 1 with Slum Village, u will come across so many dope techniques just from that one album alone. The spirit of Dilla will continue to live on and shout out to Ma Dukes for creating such a legacy thru her son Dilla Dawg aka The King of Beats.

the trick is to stack a tambourine loop on top of a straight hi hat pattern, the second tamb hit is a little delayed so it has swing while still pronouncing the straight hi hat hits. This creates a unique shuffle sound.
facts
just a clarification, that is actually a tambourine
all those high freq . just the same if you mix xD
I have to say.. I truly appreciate this comment! I was wondering why my hi hats sound so shitty and stale. They are not hi hats at all!
could also be a shit quality hihat tho
:P
its actually layered
@@fathanmaulana4240 Yeah, you're right. It's a tambourine and hihat layered
I love your genuine enthusiasm about Dilla's beats. Really great to watch and informative!
thanks for watching
JFilt is the best Production Teacher Ever!
+phenomena17 haha i'm humbled thank u!
Agreed! He's the teacher!
Please, if you're reading this in 2019, keep doing your thing. We CANNOT LET GREAT ARTIST like Dilla be forgotten, such as with the current mainstream climate.
PLZ PLZ PLZ keep doin your thing, big homie.
salute
Another little trick that you can do is if you can find a sample with 2 hihats in a row, you can adjust the speed of the sample, which will change the space between the 2 hits. So you can dial it in to a nice swung triplet feel like you did at 3:26 but with one pad. Oh, and im Silent Dave btw haha
wassup Silent Dave that's a good tip I may try this also
+rdavidr WOW i had no idea!! Wassup bro! Dope tip i've actually done that but never made a vid for it but thanks for reminding me!! #WeDoBeats
+Verysickbeats no doubt! you should def make a vid!
+rdavidr that's a great tip as the beat I'm making now, one of the samples that I've flipped on the pads has just one annoying hat that I can't filter out and is too low to come through so spent ages getting it right on a beat so I can mask it with my hats. But now if I have one with hats that sound good that's a great alternative way of thinking. Cheers.
+rdavidr
haha, didn't expect to see you here
Dope video bro, I've been revisiting hi-hats in my beat making process after realizing that the swing of the beat comes from starting with the swing of your hi hats, then building the other drum elements, then building the musical elements.
+DJ Chosen 1 thanks fam, your hi hat game can definitely help that swing factor #WeDoBeats
This music is here because of genius... as opposed to a person, over coming their limitations... anyone can do it... you just have to think outside of the box known as... YOU.
couldn't agree more there was a time when I never thought I would never be able to make good music now it I do daily. I simply doubted my self and because I believed I couldn't and that's was a self fulfilling prophecy.
Just when my beat making started to feel a bit stale, I find videos like this. Very helpful.
+jbaby007 awesome

salute
DOPE! DOPE! you can't really hear it but it gives it that funky swing and bounce, it like a ghost note hit hat. another technique of Dilla I've noticed is he makes the last hi hat before the kick on the one, louder. to emphasis groove! Dope tutorial JFilt.
+phenomena17 thank u sir
"And you don't even know why!"

Wuz up JYou just dropping gems, those ears of yours... Teach!
+JazzMatic1967 LOL thanks for stopping thru
Nice.Thanks for sharing this.
my pleasure
Although your lesson on underlying hi hats is definitely still informative, i think in the J Dilla track he is using some underlying tambourine loop, which also gives it that humanised feel because it isn't just one shots. I could be wrong though.
+Banana11 i believe you are right however, these techniques are just inspired off of imagination even if it's not exactly what they did so thanks so much for watching
It sounds like a tamb, but you can't objectively say - who knows how that sample was manipulated in terms of EQ, etc...ya know?
Such a good album!
agree
Nice catch man!
salute
man keep those comin!
+TheAbotun thanks for watching!

Lovin your vids
+MrBoxxed thank u
Beat is dope !!!
salute
Sounds like he has a hi-hat + tambourines going in the background. Could also be triplet hi hats as well, but either way, I enjoy how you analyze the beats. The ultimate key is to just let if flow as Dilla did!!
salute
Yo! WTF......Thats crazy! I just walked into a whole new room of ideas. Thanks fam.

Thank you!
Aloha
my pleasure!
the tambourine on the off beat (8 notes) of forth and backis also key to the effect of the hi hat swing. Pearhaps also was some big imagination, Innovate don't emulate
salute
Gettin ready for Dilla day 19!!!
yessir
What's good my brother. Nice tip on the J Dilla technique.
I have a client in Italy that's about to drop a project in April and he wants me to submit a track for it, so I'm scouting out different styles for ideas to come up with something different for him. I'll definitely be checking out your other videos for sure.
Peace

Dope vid j filt
salute
could you do video on his bass patterns and of that era J
Basically this....Hopefully these vids help ua-cam.com/play/PL7B49588AFBB71A01.html
We need you in schools man! I feel like I'm sitting in the dopest classroom when I watch your videos. Have you ever thought about getting involved with the J Dilla music tech grant?
never thought of it, that would be dope
I think the program would benefit from your involvement, with your enthusiasm and the way you break everything down. I heard about the program though a facebook group ran by Ma dukes and Frank Nitt. Either way my man, I appreciate what you do with these videos. you're helping with the torch being carried into the next generation Jfilt
Much love and reapect
Yo personally my fav triplet hat pattern on a track has gotta be Intrigue from Pete Rock’s Surviving Elements album. Pretty sure it’s using strictly hats and no tambourines if I’m not mistaken.
salute
I thought you was gon' mention the look of love for the moment.
I like the beat you had at 4:18
much thanks
