    J Dilla Inspired Techniques
    In this vid, we examine a technique from the legendary J Dilla where he uses space in his beats. I've used this technique very often with individual stems but first recognized it with the production of QTip and Pete Rock. I just feel that Jay Dilla took it to another level. This is demonstrated within Protools but the concept can be transferred to any hardware or software.
    This is only one of many J Dilla techniques, but if you listen to his production on Phat Kat's debut album called Undeniable, u will come across so many dope techniques just from that one album alone. The spirit of Dilla will continue to live on and shout out to Ma Dukes for creating such a legacy thru her son Dilla Dawg aka The King of Beats.

      yes kraziAzian ! thats the quote i was going to use also! first off, cool tutorials, been watching them go by, this is a couple years old but your dedication here and your excitement is/were refreshing! so dont be alarmed but i had to come in here tell you something. that "space" is his and madlibs little signiture thing they were doing. uhuh. think about. first it was the ghost notes and then that. inmyohsohumble opinion of course, but thats the point of view im sharing with you, if you havent seen it in the meantime.. AND, i think qtip did it first...i cant rememeber the beat. everybody was doing drop outs on the 4 and he had one where theres no snare...early 90...i dont know, but its one of the better known ones...sry. hope you kept it up, peace

    The fact that dilla used a status quo sample, and it sounds good is a testament to his sample flipping skills, his ability to switch up stuff and subvert expectations. Genius

  • @ah_dev
    @ah_dev 7 років тому +54

    the only problem in this tutorial is that Dilla didn't cut directly from his master, he dropped the other tracks but kept the snare reverberating to fill that 'silence'. Try cutting all other stems but leaving a long delay/verb on the snare- it'll pull it together.

    • @Verysickbeats
      @Verysickbeats  7 років тому +26

      these are just inspired concepts not to be mistaken with what he did exactly, but thanks for sharing the tip

    • @sinetwo
      @sinetwo 6 років тому

      Most def, there's a slight reverb/fade, instead of cutting the master, but the point is the technique of space gives you plenty of room to introduce other sounds or make a more dramatic part of the rapper's lyrics. Good tip!

    As a Jazz drummer, I played a lot over J Dilla beats to practice my chops and I ear his influence of Jazz triplets. Feeling 3/4 swing over 4/4, some flams to delay vibe on snare-Hi-Hat, kinda Second Line bass drum, and so on... love it

  • @chrisclayden5399

    Love this technique, one of my favourite examples is Do the astral plane by Flying Lotus. Towards the end of that track there's a bit where everything mutes to digital zero for 2 wholes beats and there's this one handclap and it gets me every time. Less is more, more often than not

    I like these videos..its like Dilla class. When I first started making beats in the early 2000's, taking out space was one of the first things I intuitively learned from a lot of my favorites of the time like Premier, Alchmeist, and Ye. Same with the hi-hat technique but that was just something I just kind of fooled around with(having a seperate set of hi hats doing its on thing as like a ghost note). It's like a very intuitive thing that heads kind just kind of pick up and these videos make me happy. Thanks man

    Yeah we called this pull outs in the 90s and we did it by muting certain tracks as the beat would loop live on the board

    • @djestouff
      @djestouff 5 років тому +3

      2018 and still how I arrange my beats hehe. all tracks playing on the mpc as a loop, then use the track mute screen to mute/unmute tracks live as I record the stereo outs.

    I like the fact that you are an MPC enthusiast, like myself, yet you don't have the sickening dogmatic purist attitude in terms of using other types of gear, software, and techniques to create dope music. I salute you for that and give you much respect for being open-minded and willing to experiment. We live in such wonderful times for creating and making original music these days.

    Hey man. I use to make beats on Frooty Loops back in the early 2000’s. I was still in high school. I clicked on your video because it had Jay Dee mentioned in it. I watched the three prior to this one. Love your advice and homage to Dilla techniques. I sure miss his presence. Great job though. I wish you nothing but success in your musical career and endeavors. Peace.

    I think that whole cutting the sample out for a second is inspired by live d.j's back in the day. They use to crossfade that track in and out quickly to highlight the rappers best lyrics.. Its a great technique.

  • @garnetbey7400
    @garnetbey7400 6 років тому

    i been doing this technic for many years, but to camel back off this beautiful process, when i do a lot of my drop outs, where ever i choose i like to make sure that my slice is done at a point where the actual wave comes to its lowest dip, between the kick snare or hat. then after the slice add a fade out to really give the slice a natural feel...thanks agin bro...

  • @nate43data

    Dope technique i use quite a lot taking out different elements to switch things up and add bounce. One of my favourite things to do is take away the drums and leave the melody on the first beat then add the drum back and take away melody on second beat then take drums away and add melody back on the 3rd beat then on the 4 with the snare bring everything back.
