I can't believe that all of the top search results of "beginner" dumbbell exercise videos are all padded out over 10 minute crappy videos with exercises clearly for higher level people, demonstrated by 6 pack wielding gurus. Great video!

    This video is absolute perfection.
“Here are 8 dumbbell exercises for beginners with good general coverage of different muscle groups. Here is what each of them are, what muscles they target, and multiple angles showing correct form/posture, and very minimal but important tips. The end.”
This is exactly what I needed. Perfect format for ADHD brain lol.

July 2023 I first searched for beginner workout videos and stuck to this one and some cardio. I started at 315lb 5ft 10in and I just hit my goal weight today 185lb. There’s no secret strategy. Find a reason to lose the weight and stick to a workout that you can do repeatedly and watch your calories . For me I was tired of being a shut in so that was my motivation. I didn’t want to rot inside my house anymore. Hopefully this can inspire someone just starting out. I remember reading something similar when I was first considering getting healthy. Good luck!

I'm terribly obese, and back in February/March decided I needed to get in shape and undo years of neglect. I'd like to thank you for making such clear, concise and educational videos! :D
I've lost about 18kg since I started (~100 days) and been increasing my weights gradually. I've been working in other activities of course but these have made up the core of my workouts every week, except for the V-sits anyway (can't physically do those yet).
(EDIT: Incidentally, having started at ~1kg, I'm now at ~4kg weights. I combined my dumbbells into barbells for the chest presses, where I can do just under 10kg)

First day impressions:It arrived in a waist high box. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxP26Tir6n60vUkdtn4mbwhRO8cwuJQNy2 Each dumbbell was in its own foam box within the shipping box. Everything was secure and in good shape. No weird smells. The weight changing mechanism is really smooth and straight forward. Changing weight is really fast and easy. Though the handle is plastic, I don't think it will be breaking anytime soon. So far pretty impressed after my first session with them. I was afraid they were going to be too wide at first, but I didn't have any issues with them while doing upright rows.

Finished first day of the workout.
Started really light but did more reps (15 per set) just so I could have more time to really make sure I am doing the exercises correctly.
Few things kickbacks really kicked my butt. Had use the lightest of weights, they still cramped instantly, are you supposed to lift your arms as high as they go while straight or just 180 degrees?
For rows I felt it more in the triceps than my back. I tried using my back more when pulling up but still think maybe my triceps are too weak so I can't use a heavy enough weight for the exercise to work the back correctly?
Also dead lift took till the third olset where I really focused on my hip movement instead of trying to touch my toes to really have it feel right.
I also added two exercises. 1-plank just extra core because I think mine is weak.
2- wrist/forearm curls. Because they feel like they give out before my biceps or feel uncomfortable when doing exercises with heavier weights because I have hurt my wrists before being extra careful with them and building strength that might have been lost.
I feel certainly worn out, took it slow and steady too make sure it was all correct. Took like an 1-1.5h to finish.
As a beginner this is great and really helps me see how I have to equalize my body.
My triceps and core muscles need serious gains while the rest is adequate, a little weak. I tried not to push myself too hard. Still sweat, still raised heartrate but I have over done it many times and it makes me skip days if I can't move my arms past 90 degrees the next four days.

    • @whatsupdude2778
      @whatsupdude2778  4 роки тому +11

Thanks for sharing Blackwing, as far as the kickbacks exercise, just go close to 180 degrees, no need to go higher. As far as the rows exercise, your arms will probably tire out first, that is typical becasue they are much smaller muscles. For deadlifts, just go down to a point that is comfortable for your range of motion. It is great that you are going lighter on the weights, most people go way to heavy in the beginning and are sore for a week. It sounds like you have a solid plan, so keep at it.

I recently started lifting weights / my 5 lb dumbbells (lost or gave away my two pounders years ago)
And I googled Basic dumbbell workouts and found your video. I used to lift weights a little on high school and later on as an adult would lift dumbbells and I remembered some of the moves I don't know what they're called but now I know what they're called by watching your video thank you! I still need to know what some are called but at least I remember them and that's what I have been doing the other day for the past two weeks or so and in between walking a little and riding my bike.
I started with doing one set of five reps and now I'm doing two sets of five reps, bicep curls, raise arms to the side, forward and backward, then lifting both dumbbells upward above shoulders (not sure what those are called), squats with dumbbells at both sides, then holding one dumbbell both hands squat with dumbbell in-between legs, then I put one knee on chair and lean forward bent arm at my side and raise dumbbell backwards then switch to the other side.
I added this one to my routine today, (I don't have a bench press so) I sat on a chair and leaned backwards at somewhat of an incline and held the dumbbells in front of my chest then extended them outward and back.
I am 63 years old, overweight and have some medical issues but I am determined to make getting back in shape / fitness more of a priority in my life again. I grew up very active and involved in sports and I loved it and miss it but being a single parent for 20 years with two boys I had to work work work and was priority.
Thank you for your simple, clear video.

Hi Brian. An update from me. I've been doing these exercises 2 or 3 times a week for several months now (three sets of 10 reps of the 8 exercises) increasing weight slowly. At 72 I'd never used weights before and I have found them doing me a power of good. As a regular runner, until I found your YT I was someone with strong legs and a puny upper body. And for my vanity the changes even show in the mirror. Superbly clear and practical video. My advice to anyone who wants to strengthen their upper body is to do these exercises consistently. Thanks again. Myles from London (PS Same person as mylomania, see below)

Came to say that this is one of the best starting guides to get your form right.
I lost 60 lbs... but it would not be possible without work out and diet guides on YT.
Also because this is uses mostly a pair of dumb bells, it works for folks that prefer a lighter or maintenance work out at home and thus relatively cheap.
Also if you have "graduated" to heavier dumb bells, remember your light bells are still great for warm up and checking forms :)

I did all but the V sit so far, because there is a 0% chance I can do it, and as a beginner, this is an intense workout. Thanks for not padding, as others have said.
