  • There are A LOT of misconceptions about 4C hair and the misconception at the top of the list is that tightly coiled or type 4C hair can have low porosity. Surrendering to this belief has led many to use the wrong products and styling techniques, resulting in dry, brittle, dull, and unmanageable hair.
In this video, I reveal why 4C hair cannot have low porosity and the exact products and techniques I use to help my 4C clients FALL IN LOVE with their hair as it begins to do things they have been led to believe was impossible…like having defined juicy curls that shine.
Everything I share in this video is backed by scientific evidence, which I have linked below, and all of the products and tips I share have been proven to work over and over again!

*_UA-camr Natural Nadine is the first person, I have heard say this and she backs it up with science too as it pertains to our true porosity. I'm glad someone else is saying this because many Black women have been misled by these so called natural gurus._*
*_I did the strand test and my hair is supposedly low porosity, so I bought more moisture products but my hair was dry because I wasn't implementing protein. My products are now mainly about protein and my so called low porosity hair now thrives._*

I have kinky hair my hair draws up so tight it’s like I don’t have any length at all and I hate that but I won’t say it’s 4C but it is very kinky. The problem now is we have all these people on UA-cam talking about hair types and how to care for it and this only confuses us more and makes it very hard to believe anything that’s said. I think the smartest advice is to go back to basics and get a good regular regimen.

I understand what you’re saying about being overwhelmed with so much information. Please know that I have been doing this for over 15 years and have done the research. Specialize in tight curls, specifically 4C. The basics we know in love are not always the best route. Such as greasing her scalps and loading our hair down with oil. To Keep it very basic. I can say this shampoos your hair weekly, gets a trim quarterly, and gets a protein treatment every 6-8 weeks. Find a style that is easy for you to do and maintain with a minimum manipulation and when you manipulate your hair, be very gentle and kind to it.

Honestly this doesn’t make sense . Some black people have hair that the water beads up on when wet and others soak up the water. Some of us have high porosity and some of us have low porosity hair. If this information were true peoples hair wouldn’t react to water differently after getting chemical relaxers. Whether the hair is clarified or not there are differences in porosity. And the creator of this video doesn’t even wear natural hair nor is it long and healthy… why are y’all listening to this information as if it’s of value smh

Thank you for your comment. You are right at the time I didn’t have natural hair. However I have been working with tight curls for over 13 years as a licensed stylist and have done the research. I included the studies in the video and description. I am not sure if you have seen any of my other videos. I now have a natural taper and grew my hair out over the last two years using the methods I describe in the video. Thank you again for watching and for your comment.

      @Ari-jm6xx 6 місяців тому +4

I think there are studies that have shown that Black hair tends to be porous.
      Two anecdotes:
      1) I remember a big thread of women sharing their hair-analysis results. Many of these women swore they were low porosity, but for most, their analyses actually showed them to be high or normal porosity. I think most of these UA-camrs who say they're low porosity fit this bill. I can think of one who says she's low porosity, yet her hair always dries as she styles; and another one who says he's high porosity, but his hair immediately soaks up water when he wets it.
      2) I'm high porosity and water beads up on my hair. This was addressed in the video. Evidently, Black hair is hydrophobic.

Thanks for this! I actually sort of stumbled into similar conclusions a few years when I did a porosity test. My strand sank into the water and it has the characteristic dryness of high porosity. I started using protein shampoo and conditioner and avoid deep conditioning too often. I also use an oil mix as a prepoo. Oil scalp and hair at least one hour before washing. My wash and gos started popping off like no other! My wash days are also way quicker because the tangling is minimal now.

What are your thoughts about the LOC Method? Im gonna try it.I just dont know my hair type. It is very soft, and I never have to detangle it afer washing. I just put conditioner on it and it gets curly. However, it shrinks about 60%, and at end of the day, its a big ,frizzy afro, and dry. Dryness is a constant problem, im thinking it is a 4a/3C type.

Hi and interesting video for the work put in sharing the book/articles/ research but at 06:00 you made a conclusion that does not make sense with what you said in my opinion. You said our hair cuticles have more oils in than other ethnicities, so we don't need oil. How can you make such quick conclusion. Our skin and body is mainly made of water still for proper care we all need to drink water and moisturize our skin with water content products. You also make this conclusion because we have more oils than other ethnicities... But so what? Our hair texture is different than other ethnicities so how can we use other hair types to know how much oil we need or not. We may have more naturally but we may still need additional oils to manipulate our unique hair texture. Finally you clearly say that our ancestors in Africa used oils and butter to manipulate African hair but still your conclusion is that we don't need it... Don't you think they knew what they were doing... Also when we use oils and butter the goal is not to make it into the cuticles but only to lay it on top/lubricate, smooth the cuticules (same as other conditioning ingredients) the hair to make the hair feels softer and more manageable. So the fact that we may have more oils in the cuticle can't change the fact that having oil/butter on top may also help when used the right way of course.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and for the opportunity to dive deeper into the nuances of hair care, especially as it pertains to afro-textured or type 4 hair. The points you've raised are important and deserve a thoughtful response, grounded in the scientific insights shared in the video.
The video's discussion on hair porosity emphasizes the inherent characteristics of type 4 hair, including its natural lipid content and the structural predisposition that influences moisture retention. It's crucial to understand that the video's conclusion is based on a detailed analysis of the hair's physical properties and the role of oils and butters in contemporary hair care practices.
Regarding the use of oils and butters, the historical context provided in the video highlights why these practices were adopted and how they have evolved. It's fascinating to see the adaptation from traditional methods to modern understandings of hair health. The video suggests that while the intention behind using oils and butters-to lay on top of the hair for lubrication and manageability-remains relevant, the scientific perspective offers insights into why these might not be necessary or beneficial for everyone, especially considering the high lipid content and hydrophobic nature of type 4 hair.
The goal of the video is not to dismiss the historical knowledge or the experiences of those who find oils and butters beneficial but to present a perspective based on scientific research and the specific needs of type 4 hair. It recognizes the diversity within hair care practices and encourages viewers to consider how different approaches may or may not serve their unique hair needs.
Your analogy of our body's need for water, despite being largely composed of it, beautifully illustrates the complex relationship between inherent properties and external needs. Just as our understanding of hydration has grown more sophisticated over time, so too has our understanding of hair care. The video aims to contribute to this ongoing conversation, offering insights that might help individuals make informed decisions about their hair care routines.
I hope this response provides a clearer picture of the rationale behind the conclusions drawn in the video. It's through discussions like these that we can continue to learn from each other, combining scientific research with personal experiences to find the best approaches to hair care. Thank you again for engaging so thoughtfully with the content, and I look forward to continuing this enriching dialogue.

You should change the title. I’m type 4 and I’m low porosity. There are 3 types of type 4 hair, but I’m not a licensed cosmetologist 🤷🏾‍♀️Also I wonder who did these studies. Also why do some hair of black people float to the bottom of the water. Also I can’t agree with not needing oils sense heat is not enough to hydrate my hair, I have to use oil. And hair does hold moisture if u know what you’re doing, u have to use heat. People please oil and seal your hair before it brakes. Leave in conditioners are important while the hair is wet for dry hair. Also be careful w/ protein. I put leave-in on my hair before jail so my hair stays soft, then I add oil to seal and my hair stays soft and moisturized without that heavy look.

@@gracextended Certainly, a visit to a dermatologist remains highly recommended. While protective styles might contribute to your daughter’s scalp irritation, distinguishing between mechanical stress and other scalp conditions is crucial. My hair is high porosity, coily, and medium density. I use two products in my hair: water and gel. Either Kinky-curly custard or Curls blueberry bliss jelly. I wash my hair weekly, mist my hair with water every morning, and it stays hydrated, coily, soft, and healthy. Air dry only, there’s no need for a blow dryer. My hair never looks dry.

Hi. Thanks so much for the video! I have 4a/4b hair. So that means I can't have low porosity hair?
My regimen is: unscented shampoo (Seaweed bath co), deep condition (tgin moisture miracle), leave-in (Camille rose honey hydrate), oil (pumpkin seed or jojoba). I sometimes use gel (mane choice biotin inflused styling gel). I find gel to be drying after the 1st day though so I seal with oil.
I have some questions below. I would be very grateful if you could respond to them because I'm questioning many things about hair now even though I've been getting conflicting advice from youtubers that are hair chemists and dermatologist that say they know natural hair too. It's discouraging...
    1. Does that mean I need to refresh my hair everyday with a leave-in mist?
    2. I thought you can't remoisterize your hair effectively if there is gel in it because it forms a cast and the cast can only be removed by shampoo. Same thing with shine sprays because they have silicones which form a cast that has to be washed out.
    3. Is the weekly regimen you're suggesting: clarifying shampoo, moisturizing shampoo, steam, conditioner, regular styling gel, mizani oil-based gel, diffuse with a dryer, shine spray?
In between wash days: Leave-in spray, shine spray, diffuse/fluff (do this when refreshing daily every few days?).
    4. No deep conditioning after a protein treatment or in general?
    5. My hair seems to not like shea butter because it forms a waxy film on my hair the next day. My hair doesn't like butters and heavy oils. I use watery/jelly like products. Does this mean I'm doing something wrong?
    Thank you in advance :)
