@@fortunate14t48 Got that right!!! That's when music "was" music. I saw Bruce Springsteen in Philadelphia during the River Tour, the ticket was only $25! Fabulous "intermission" free for 3-1/2 hours!
Some perspective: I was a teenager when this was playing. I would never have been able to go back 50 years to find music I could totally feel and enjoy, like you are able to do now, going back 50 years and finding gold like this. We truly lived in a great era of music innovation.
Exactly. We had no interest in listening to a lot of 40's or 50's music in the 80's. It's amazing that music from the 70s and 80s is still 🔥. The 80's were a BLAST (at least the parts I remember, LOL)!
@@PhoenixRisen63 😂 totally agree! Grunge brought the mood into a lot of darkness and it's been a struggle to get back from that. We lived through the golden era ❤️
I saw the Speedwagon In the 70’s They each had a wall of Marshall’s Behind them The movement of all that air out into space You have to aspirate the material To get the ride🙃
My favorite REO tune because of the keyboard and guitar solos. kevin's voice great as always but love his keyboard and Gary's guitar. Makes me play air keyboard then air guitar everytime(while at home or in car).
It's my fav song by REO. THIS WAS A GREAT REACTION for the simple fact that I've never seen Pac-man dance in his chair before. He usually just sits with a blank, "the lights are on but nobodys home" look on his face. JK Ryan.😂❤😂❤
I grew up with REO and I always thought that this song was one of those ….. take me to church, kind of songs. I would play air guitar and air organ along with this song on my steering wheel while I was cruising NE San Antonio. Hell yes!!!!!!
"Riding The Storm Out" and "Golden Country" are their best. If you want to hear one of the best guitar solos by Gary, watch "Golden Country" live on 1976 Tour.
I'm 61 years old. I think I was 12 when I bought this record Not sure. I know every song on it word for word. I also had Nine Lives, Hi Infidelity and Good Trouble. They might be my favorite band of all.
My son recently asked me for a list of my favorite songs. He's lived in Spain for most of his life and I've been mostly here in the states, so we probably don't know each other as well as we should. Recently something happened and he wants pictures and some other things from me. When it came to my list of favorite songs, I hesitated a moment when I had to decide to add this song to my all time favorites list. I know it has a commercial element to it and it is anything but the usual metal-type of music I listen to, but in the end I just had to include it. It's a song that is endlessly joyous, positive and up lifting. I had to give him that. And it truly deserves to be on my list of greatest of all time.
Something we only get with 70's rock would be Hammond organs, tambourines and back-up singers. It'd be awesome if a band (a good band....not like today's offerings) would emerge using the "tools of their forebearers".
High energy Banger! Gary is scorching that guitar and Neal has his own carnival going on the organ! This is also my favorite REO song. Growing up in Chicago, REO wasn't exactly a home town band (they were from Champagne) but we claimed them as an Illinois band. I was fortunate enough to see them when I was a high school senior, just after this album came out - we were sitting in a side balcony and watched over Neal's shoulder while he played that B3! Woot!
I worked in the grain pit at the Chicago Board of Trade in 1985 and there was a nice guy on the phone for EF Hutton who was a first cousin of Kevin Cronin.
Not only is Kevin playing the piano here, he actually taught himself to play the acoustic piano in order to write the song. (He had been the rhythm guitarist before this.) I would love for you to dive into the double-live album "You Get What You Play For", because as fine as REO is on the studio versions, the reason the label stayed with them through all the changing vocalists and albums that didn't sell was because they were a *KILLER* live band. You think Gary Richrath plays an amazing guitar? Wait until you hear him live. And live shows make you appreciate what a great drummer Alan Gratzer is, because he never lets the energy flag. (Alan retired in 1987. His replacement, Brian Hitt, is pretty good, but he tends to get languid. Gratzer never does.) Plus since the live album came before this, the only song on it that you have heard is "Ridin' the Storm Out". Start at the beginning with "Like You Do" and just keep going all the way through to "Golden Country" (my favorite) at the end. UNSTOPPABLE.
I do believe this is the best Rick n roll song ever performed. It it vastly underrated.,insane vocals, insane musicality. Just freaking insane. Your reaction was fitting. You get it.
REO and Kevin Cronin are on my personal Top5 of my alltime favourite Rock Bands-list and there is absolutely nothing, they could do to get ever off of that .. Big Thx 2 U guys! Was super-fun, watchin´you guys "rollin" with that song from ´78!! Best from Germany!!
Coolest thing about this song is it's peak billboard position of 58 on the hot 100, yet it is their modern encore. When you get a chance, find a live version. It is AMAZING in person.
I saw REO twice back in the 70’s. In fact I saw them on the tour for this album. They were fantastic in concert! I’m 67 years old and got to experience a huge amount of great music! Great job boys!
Imagine 1972 at the Aragon ballroom in Chicago, Friday 3 bux to get in and you see REO, Styx and Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes all local bands earning their chops, great tome to be a teenager!
I Saw REO with 38 Special opening for them in 1978 after this album came out, (when I was a Junior in High School) at the Bradley Memorial Field House in Peoria IL. the bands home stomping grounds. I also new a phenomenal guitar player in the area who worked out a lot of Gary Richrath's guitar solo, that Gary used in Flying Turkey Trot. The band came together at the University of Illinois in Champaign / Urbana IL. Good stuff, but there were a lot of amazing bands getting a lot of radio time back then. We (Central Illinois young folk, at the time ha ha) were all just proud that one of our local jam bands made it into radio air time across the country.
As a teenager in the 70e this is one if the gold standard songs that encapsulates the energy and joy of being young then. If i were to montage images and feelings and experiences of my life (and my friends) in that era THIS is THE song i would let play the entire time. Thanks for the reaction! As a 63 year old grandpa now, this rockets me back and i can relive it all over again ...perfectly.
Now you MUST react to the last song on the album..."Say You Love Me Or Say Goodnight!" It's a Rock 'n' Roll freight train running off of the tracks!!! I KNOW you'll love it! And one of their lesser known albums came right after the "...Tuna Fish" album..."Nine Lives"... it wasn't nearly a successful, but has some gems... and was recorded with a "live in the studio" sound. Try "Heavy On Your Love" and "Back On the Road Again", which actually features bassist Bruce Hall on vocals... and it rocks!
"Only The Strong Survive". Another great REO song that doesn't get its due. Written by Gary Richrath (lead guitar), who is the real heart of the band and has written many of their hits. RIP.
I like to imagine them listening to this in the studio as they were recording and everyone was just grooving and celebrating because they knew it was gonna be a huge hit.
I graduated high school in 1978 when this came out. It was the greatest and still brings back so many memories when I hear it now. I love seeing you guys react to some of the old but, truly great ones.
I met Kevin back in the 80s he was very nice I blinded him first with my camera 📸 getting a pic it was fiesta week in San Antonio 🎉 they still come by and perform there he was very funny I love REO Some girls I remember cut some curls from his hair it was wild poor guy 😅
I discovered REO Speedwagon when I was 15 in 1980. I remember listening to this tracked with my headphones on as I sat in the dark. They were so underrated when compared to other bands at the time like Van Halen, ACDC, Led Zeplin, Foreigner ELO etc.
Anything from the 70’s was done by professionals who were true musicians. Record each track, and edit it together manually. No click track or auto tune. Real music.
This song has been giving me the good chills now for over 40 years easily. The Gold Standard. Check out Bob Seger's Roll Me Away for more "rolling" that gives you the good chills. Btw, I wrote ''gold standard'' before you even breached the topic. 😆 Lol.
There are certain musical acts whose sound is emblematic of a certain era, and to me, REO personifies the late '70's - early '80s. Lightning in a bottle.
Have not heard this for a long time. I always loved REO. I can't remember not knowing this song. But man, the enthusiasm and energy you brought - it is a great song! Chicago reppin' it again! That ending just is energizing (you want more)! 🎹🎸 🎶🥁🎉

And yet their never listed as one of the greatest bands ever. Just don't get it

100% agree. A grossly underrated song.
REO "Golden Country " guy's
Mr Gary Richrath on guitar is so good and has one of my favorite guitar tones. Just a shredder
It's impossible not to feel great and get energized by this song. Spring has sprung! Play it again.
So bloody intense!!!!

I saw them in concert...long ago! 😍
Kevin's vocals are great. This is a textbook perfect rock and roll song.

This is definitely the best song that REO Speedwagon ever did. "Golden Country" is amazing, too.
Golden Country, what a great song!
Golden Country is REO's masterpiece
One of the greatest keyboard/guitar solos of all time there IMO. Hail!
Kevin Cronin: Adding syllables to words since 1967.
Do one of their best: "Golden Country"

One of the all time greatest songs no doubt! Great karaoke song too😄
That whole album is 🔥🔥Gary Richrath’s guitar is top notch.
"Keep On Loving You" and "I Can't Fight This Feeling Anymore" should be next in line for the REO rabbit trail.

The background “keep on Rolln” sounds like a church choir!
It's probably my favorite high energy rock song of all time. Never tire of this song. The organ and guitar solos are just insane.
When it comes to guitar heroes, nobody ever mentions Gary Richrath, but he had a sound and style all his own - very underrated!
Why is REO often overlooked? Straight up rock and roll genius. RIP Gary "The Shredder" Richrath. And going to church with Neal D!

The anthem of our lifetime. Thankful I got to see them do this live during the album tour. Gary Richrath on lead guitar was a force.
