    Interestingly according to Virgil Elliot, Bouguereau did not follow the Venetian method of Grisaille + colored glazes but started with a flat wash of a slightly too saturated fleshy mid tone and then added semiopaque greyish shadows and highlights on top. But this looks very nice nonetheless!

      j s so you saying you cant learn how to do something? We are on this earth for roughly 80 years, but the only people that can paint like this are people that “have it”? Thats kind of a stupid outlook, unless im misunrderstanding

    •  4 роки тому

      Thats like saying you want to learn compose music like Mozart. You either have the capacity for that level of talent or you don't. You're born with it or you aren't. Otherwise you're just mediocre with the potential to improve a little but will never reach the levels of those masters.

    Hello! Greetings from México, i speak spanish so i hope you excuse my grammar mistakes. I'm 19 years and i'm an architecture student, but painting is one of my favorite activities. I've seen all of your videos and belive me, I'm amazed with your techique, i got many questions about this and other of your paintings, i'd be pretty glad if you answered me. In the case of this portrait do you completely let dry the layer of black/white/gray tones to apply the skin tones? or you continue painting the layer of "colors" when the base is still fresh? Do you have any social networks? i would love to follow you. Thank you very much!

    • @oldmasterpaintings
      @oldmasterpaintings  4 роки тому +27

      Yes, I let always the layers dry completely. There is no wet in wet painting. Everytime the position of the camera changes a bit it´s a new session. Here there were about 9-10 short sessions at all.
      I have social network accounts but don´t spend much time with it for the moment. Like more to paint and sit on the easel.

    very nice end result. How many layers is this? When i put more than 2-3 layers the whole painting falls apart, I am very new to painting with oils so I have no clue what i do wrong, but I also dont understand how this portrait with so many layers ended up so nice. Please, explain! I mean her face color changed at least 3 times , was this planned/needed or just such spontaneous style of correcting until it's all good? Because i noticed some artists paint in only 1 or 2 layer, lot of careful planning. For now this is only thing that works for me

    You used the grissaille..!?...tell us of this technic ...it made the painting easy.....thanx ..🥰

    • @oldmasterpaintings
      @oldmasterpaintings  4 роки тому +7

      It was a blueish grisaille to get the skintones a bit more colder. The warm colours were overdone and on that followed, after drying, a layer of a very light skin tone over all to dull it down.
      Don´t know if it is the right way to paint a Bouguereau. It´s not easy to find technical analysis of his paint layers.

    Hi. Thank you for the great video... I have a very basic question .... why didn't the old master mix the paints before applying on canvas? Why so many layers required? And if these layers are still wet when the next layer applied? I'll be grateful for the answers 🌷

    • @StrawberryLegacy
      @StrawberryLegacy 3 роки тому +2

      Many many reasons. Blocking in some colour first helps you judge values more accurately. But more importantly working in layers gives your painting a luminous, three dimensional glow that cannot possibly be achieved with one layer. I recommend reading up on things like the Venetian method if you are interested in this topic.
