  • Demo video done by request from The Gear Page to compare the new Suhr Discovery Analog Delay to the Chase Bliss Tonal Recall and EHX Deluxe Memory Man. The request was to let clean notes and a chord ring out and record with repeats approaching oscillation.
    I used a Ditto Looper to record a simple chord first hitting each note separately. It's incredibly mundane, but provides a fair comparison that allows you to really hear the difference between each unit. This was recorded with a Suhr HHS Classic Pro and Benson Earhart into a Suhr Reactive Load and the Torpedo CAB M+ using a Celestion Greenback IR. No filtering or effects added.
    Yeah, it's low quality and boring, but will give you a good idea of how the Discovery sounds in comparison to two other hugely popular delays. Hope this helps some of you with your search.

    Thanks for posting this. I look forward to when someone shows the tonal difference between the Discovery and the Clock works

    Suhr Discovery Analog Delay wins for me, then the Memory Man. But $550 is steep for a non-stereo pedal. I think people that use midi and want 127 presets will buy this one. I almost did, but I don't need all the features it has. Suhr sounds great though, good video!!!

    I believe the original DMM to be the king of all analog (non-tape) delays, maybe because my ears are tuned to it. Unfortunately I no longer have one! I currently play the TR RKM and this comparison doesn't give me enough reason to sell it for the Suhr, although the Suhr sounds great. Thanks for doing this video.

    Discovery has outshined every analog delay I have ever played. And I own pretty much every one ever built, the only thing that comes close is a select few of my many vintage deluxe memory mans, even then, this thing (dare I say) sounds better, and is going to make history. Trust me on that.

      It doesn't quite nail the brightness and percussiveness of a DMM if you really want that DMM sound, but I do agree that taking all things into account it pretty outshines most everything else out there.

      I want to buy the Discovery, but listening to the comparison it does not have the same punch and clarity on the first repeat as the MM does, even when the bass cut is applied. I also found this on Gear Page >'I remember the DMM repeats being a bit more cut in the lows while still being as loud as the dry signal making them pop off on that first repeat. When you cut the lows with the Discovery there’s a bit of loss of volume making the repeat more subdued, smoother or fluid.
      Ultimately, the best way I can describe it is that when I dial the low cut all the way down on the discovery to EQ it more DMM-ish (according to my memory) I find myself wanting to turn up the mix past noon to get more volume out of the repeat and make them pop, but that only cuts the dry signal. It doesn’t boost the repeat volume up back up to unity with the dry signal. Does that make any sense? I remember feeling this way about the CC.< ...That comment matches just what I am hearing in this vi. Very interested to hear what you have to say..Cheers

      @@dumalucky You are absolutely correct. The DMM has a preamp built in, which is how it achieves those bright percussive repeats louder than unity. That comes at a price of increased noise and decreased clarity. Don't mistake brightness for clarity. The Discovery is more clear than the DMM, which has noise, clipping and loss of fidelity. DMM is my favorite classic analog delay circuit, but the Discovery is on another level when it comes to clarity of the repeats. I think they are very different and would have difficulty choosing only one. I do wonder what the Discovery would sound like with some sort of preamp or boost on the repeats to increase the level when you dial out some lows or highs.

      @@basementriffs Sorry this is so late. But couldn't you put it 100% wet and mix it with a wetter box dry with a boost. Obviously that's more than a memory man. Buuut, if you did that kind of thing you'd have a way more flexible quieter memory man. I just bought one and might try that.

    fortuitous comparison for me as I have a TR and a DMM, and the Discovery on order. what are your overall thoughts?

    • @basementriffs
      @basementriffs  2 роки тому +1

      For me, these three are very different. The DMM is a classic and King of analog delay. No other analog delay is as bright and percussive as the DMM. The TR is the most unique. It has qualities of the DMM, while still defining the genre of quirky modulated analog delays. The Discovery, has now created a totally new genre of what I would call a high performance analog delay. It's like having a rack delay on your pedalboard. It's not quirky like the TR and not as bright as percussive as the DMM, but it's very polished, while still sounding very analog. It would be hard for me to pick just one.

      Have you tried the new J. Rocket? I fine the Suhr so easy to use and plain outstanding sounding. I thought the TR RKN coloured my sound too much. Also I thought it was quite noisy.

    • @basementriffs
      @basementriffs  2 роки тому +1

      @@joetoe9207 No, I'm very curious if the Clockwork is as bright and punchy as the DMM. I have yet to find an analog delay that does the DMM thing with more controls. Even the DMM TT doesn't sounds as good as the DMM. Also curious to try the Asheville ADG-1. The TR is noisy and the repeats do have a very distinct character. It seems people either love it or hate it. Personally, I really dig it, but the DMM (and now Discovery) would be more of an every day delay for me.

      Interesting comment on the TR coloring sound, my old blue knob one has a bit of a level drop but it's through sound is actually really clean for an analog delay. If you have to have a pristine pristine through, consider a FTT Flight Time

    Tonal Recall and Discovery are both cool, but the DMM repeats just have the airy quality wheras the others sound more blocky and mid-rangey and to me, not as alluring.

      I can’t stand this argument “point” . The audience can’t hear the difference? Probably. Can the player hear the difference: yes. Can the player feel the difference of a better pedal they like more? Yes. Does a player play better then? Yes. Does the audience hear the player playing better? Yes. Stupid fucking argument.

    how can you buy the Suhr discovery? the only place I've seen it for sale says it will be available in March 2022

    • @basementriffs
      @basementriffs  2 роки тому +1

      Unfortunately the pedal industry is dealing with shortages of parts that hasn't caught up yet since COVID shutdowns. They built a batch of Discoveries for launch day which all sold out and scheduled the next batch for November based on when parts would be available. That November batch sold out in pre-orders on launch day. I think another batch is scheduled for January 2022, which also sold out on launch day and now only pre-orders are open for March 2022. Take all of this with a grain of salt because it's only what I've heard in rumor. There's a huge waitlist on these and I can honestly say it's worth waiting for. I'm hoping to do a better video soon. I love the DMM and TR and will likely never sell them. Both were my favorite delays during their time. But, now for me, the Discovery is the one I would never want to be without.

    The Memory Man seems very noisy. Is this the new version with these chinese chips? The old Memory Man XO with the japanese Panasonic chips was dead silent…

    • @basementriffs
      @basementriffs  2 роки тому +4

      No these are the Panasonic chips. Honestly, I have never encountered a dead silent Deluxe Memory Man. The way the DMM achieves those bright punchy repeats is a preamp pushing the repeats, but that preamp also amplifies all the noise in the BBDs, which translates to a lot of hiss. Put it in mix and you don't really hear that hiss, but in a silent demo like this it's going to definitely be apparent. Some units are more or less noisy depending on calibration, so it's certainly possible you may have encountered one less noisy than this one.

      I have a DMMXO and it’s perfect. The true magic is in adding a slight bit of chorus which causes a slight swell. Some have faulted this, as a result of the Xvive chips or whatever. Pure hogwash. You don’t get analog if you don’t want inherent artifacts IMHO.
