- In today's video I show you the parts required and the process of building an under $75 Hand Planishing Hammer.
The parts list below includes many items you may have in your shop already. If so you could put this together for less than $75!
Note: a hammer like this is a large air consumer and will require a good air compressor to keep up.

How is this video 3 years old and I’m just now seeing it! This is exactly what I’ve been building in my head but could never put it all together, thank you so much for putting this one together!
Love your common sense approach to having a plannishing hammer, not everyone has money to spend on tools they may only use a few times, defo going to look at this . Thanks dude.
Very interesting nice build and cheap 😊
I love the simplicity of this solution. Maybe you could help us out by building a larger frame to hold the hammer and die, so it could be freehand, or a little stand with a foot pedal. Thanks for all of your tips!
That is a thought I'm leaning toward doing in the not too distant future. 👍
You should've shown blowing the aluminum dust and cuttings out of the air inlet. That'll chew the diaphragm up and cause it to stay open with blowby.
Great idea !!!, your RIGHT , I was a body man and I used a small air hammer to straighten metal, it was harder to use with the handle, but I never thought of cutting it off. RIGHT ON. WILLIAM
It really makes a world of difference to using the tool in this fashion!
I agree with most of the comments I have read. I have used a hand held a few times and it is a great tool for some jobs. It is the way to go for many diyers. If you weld in a patch panel that you can get to the backside it is s very useful tool. With some square tubing you can build a pretty nice stand and have more uses. This is a very informative and useful video. Thanks for the good work. I subscribed and will be watching you more often.
Thank you very much. It definitely isn't the end all be all tool, but it can really help out in some scenarios. I have access to a "real" planishing hammer and still use this setup from time to time myself.
Just the video I was looking for. Thanks mate
Man thats cool, love it. you just solved one of my problems. great work !!!
Great video! Now I want to build one!
This is a awesome video thanks for teaching us personally I really appreciate it
My neighbours love when I start using my air hammer...
Whoa super cool I’m a Bodyman and I will make one of these for sure
The Harbor Freight pneumatic planishing hammer, the framed one, is still $59 and change at this writing. However, your assembly here is probably what a hobbiest needs first and most, for reasons you made clear. Thanks for the great idea and how-to!
A good point. You could pull the power unit out of that HF hammer and use it in this fashion as well. I really don't care for the HF hammer but it can be better than nothing. This could be done cheaper if folks had say an old air hose and hammer they don't make use of. Things like that.
Great idea - not much on this subject anywhere- thanks!
Excellent video! Thank you!
You've got over 50.000 views on this GR8 video Because most of us car guys just don't have the coin for expensive tools. It's kind of you to take the time to share bud.
Thank you. I realize not everyone can afford or can justify the expensive tools. I will still cover the pricey stuff because, well who doesn't like to look and day dream? But in the end I'm always going to think about how I can present things that people can manage for their projects.
great job, thanks again for sharing your experiences
Thank you and you are welcome. I intend to keep on doing it as long as I have quality content to share.
Great video as always man. Definitely use your link when I get one of these together.
Greatly appreciated. It's a basic setup but I still use it even in place of the big expensive Planishing hammers some times.
Love this idea. I been wanting to build a small frame planishing hammer to use on a car.
Ryan Wopat this could make a decent power unit for your frame design or just use it handheld with dollies.
Cool idea! Thanks I'm going to give it a try
You're welcome and thank you for watching.
Cool! Thanks for the info!
Good stuff!👍
Thank you. Very helpful.
This us a good video. What I have been using is an air palm nailer for this use. The tools must be homemade but otherwise this works very well. You don't need the valve as the palm nailer has a valve built into the unit. This makes up a very shallow arrangement and you can get into really small areas. Thank you for this video.
Glenn Felpel there is actually a product that is like a palm nailed but is meant for Planishing. It is called the Johnson Ez Hammer. Probably a lot cheaper picking up a palm nailed and making tooling though. The EZ Hammer is $350.
Sweet! Too bad I gave away my cheapie air hammer when I bought a good powerful one...but I think I still have a cheap one around in my odd tool drawer. Gonna make one of these!
Very good video, great idea thanks👍🏼
wurzle48 thank you, and you are welcome. The comment is appreciated 👍
Great idea, thank you.
Thank you very much. Likes and comments go a long way to letting me know I'm doing things that folks want to see, and UA-cam likes them, ha.
Great stuff hot rod hiipi.
The framed version is probably a “little “ easier on the carpal tunnel issue
Better on the fillings in your teeth too... A stand mount is superior in most ways. This is just for folks who don't have the space for a pedestal mount or ability to make their own frames. Maybe I should try making a hand frame for this.
Haha well i’m an old bugger so can’t comment on the teeth aspect but riding a motorcycle without cruise is no fun with the carpel thing. You want to avoid that as long as possible
Not just carpal tunnel but watch out for Dupruytren's contracture unless you fancy a claw hand. I've had 2 ops now.
Great idea. I like it.
Thank you!
Thank you for the video im going to make one ✌
Glad to hear it and you're welcome!
4:50 Make sure it works before this point, too late for refund/replacement after. Great Idea, I have two of these so one is going to get the treatment. Thanks John, Australia.
joandar1 VERY good point. A good friend of mine got a bad one of these just before I made this video.
joandar1 î
grat video and thanks for all the links to where you purchased the products
adam bergendorff you're welcome and thanks for watching.
Wow wow awesum sir l like this aidia
Awesome vid. Will be building. Damn YT had me unsubscribed!
You think this will work for wood ? Looking for something for ash baskets splints
What about a needle scaler?
As for your inlet: I'd weld a block of alum. over the hole then drill and tap to size. (I'm sure you know how to use a pin to align the block to the hole.)
Agreed it would be good to have more meet and that would do it. However you'd want to disassemble the tool to make sure you don't damage anything internally, and TIG welding on a piece adds a lot to the project. Fine for you or me but I was aiming to keep this simple for beginners. Still a solid suggestion. 👍
Yeah, or like he said in the video to leave more handle material on the airhammer frame when you cut off the handle, that way you have more threads for the air hose.
Looking for something way smaller to get into doors what else is out there ??
Hey Hippie, great video, question is the foot petal adjustable for air control? Thanks Bill
The foot pedal takes the place of the trigger on the hammer after it is removed. It is just an on/off switch for control. The regulator is for finer control adjustment.
Ever try a palm nailer?
I'm definitely going to make one before I start my next project. Can this be used for dent repairs as long as their is access and at a lower air pressure or do you think it may get out of hand and create problems.
It can be used for dent repair. However it can do just as much damage as it can help. Use of a planishing hammer takes some practice and experience. I would recommend trying it on test panels before using it on the parts you intend to have as your finished product. Maybe even say pick up a junk fender at a scrap yard and practice on that a bit. Knock a dent in it, cut it and weld up the cut, then try it out. I've used this tool on various projects since I made it, but it isn't something I use everyday by any means. It is extremely helpful when needed, but it is hard for me to explain off hand when it is needed. Hopefully I can get to a video about recommended uses for it sometime soon.
@@HotRodHippie Thanks for your time and for sharing your knowledge I look forward to seeing your videos.
You're welcome and thanks for watching and commenting. Every bit helps 👍
I am looking for a planishing hammer that I can use on 1/16 steel, or even 2mm (80 thou), do you know what the requirements for the Air Hammer would be... would the unit shown in the video be sturdy enough or would I need a heavy duty unit. I thought this would be an easy question, normally if you want to buy a power tool you can find a guide to help you choose the correct size for your application but I am having real trouble finding info on this for Air Hammers for Planishing. Thanks,
Matt.
Air hammers for Planishing aren't really the proper tools. This is just a budget work around to get the job done. So you won't find anyone making claims about their strength for this purpose.
The light duty units will do an ok job Planishing 16ga., but .080 is asking a fair bit of one. I'd consider a larger hammer for your needs but then you are getting into a problem area where the hammer may hit too hard and stretch the metal too quickly.
True Planishing hammers have short throws and lighter hits but do so very rapidly. Stronger air hammers are usually the opposite of that, hitting harder with longer strokes. Also using a unit handheld on that thick of material my be a bit more tedious and provide less desirable results.
You may want to look at the AirBoss units. They are purpose made Planishing hammers so the price reflects that but they are pretty reasonable as far as quality Planishing hammer prices are concerned. www.airbosstools.com/products
If the AirBoss units are more than you want to spend I'd say just build the unit like I showed and try it. For the less than $100 price tag you don't find many other options so all you can do is try it and see if it works for your needs.
Thanks for taking to time to reply, I appreciate the advice, cheers.
👍🏾
Do you have any suggestions for building your own planishing hammer?
Hot rot Hippie hola como hago para obtener ésta herramienta ....¿cual es el mecanismo para la compra y el envío.. .?soy de perú
You just made one of my jobs a lot easier.... RAMMING Green Sand!!!! I'd take the hammer head and weld a 2 or 2-1/2" dia. X 1/4" plate to the head. Then as you said adjust the air pressure to get the perfect compaction of sand.
Sounds like a great use for the setup.
Great Idea for sand casting your parts!
👍
Alan, what is the best ear protection? I'm starting a metalworking apprenticeship next week and I want to make sure I'm protecting my ears!
My go to is the IsoTunes Pro 2.0. Since I reviewed them I’ve used them almost exclusively. Heck I use them on airplanes. They have good isolation, are an in ear design so I can weld with them in, and they sound decent for all my audiobook / music listening.
I have a discount code for IsoTunes site: HOTRODHIPPIE10
And here is my review of the Pro 2.0: ua-cam.com/video/8uLmDY4I_60/v-deo.html
Is there a reason you didn’t use the swivel air hose attachment?
Reduced build cost. No reason not to use one other than that. Was just trying to make this as cheap as I could.
I do prefer to have some freedom of movement. My personal preference is the FlexZilla Whip hoses with their ball socket style swivel.
Building one as we speak
👍🇺🇸🤙😃
Do you always dance when you talk? LOL
edmond Sarvarian ALWAYS! Ha. Keeps me animated so I keep my tone and delivery upbeat and loud enough for quality audio. And I think it's far more engaging than standing stoic and monotone to explain things.
This name this hammer bro..?
It vibrates alot..better to fix it in stand..
For a lot of work a stand mount really helps. Sometimes working off the stand can be quite handy. And for a starter setup this can be very handy.
...The W's in wilwood.... Disturbing..
Awfully strange logo design isn't it?
So compressors can be had for less than $75 now a days ?!!!!
Some tools have pre-requisites. If you are trying to restore a car to the level that you want a Planishing Hammer, you should have an air compressor. If you don't have one you will NOT be able to use so many tools that would make the job easier. So no I don't include the cost of an air compressor in the price every single air tool I'm going to show you, that is just a silly point to make.
A ratchet requires a socket set to work. Does that mean I should include a socket set in the purchase price when I review a ratchet? A cordless drill without drill bits isn't much use, etc etc etc.
@@HotRodHippie I appreciate the time you've spent answering but sometimes just a quick "dumbass" is more appropriate of an answer.😉
I would have liked to of seen a stand made instead so your hands are free
...let that beard grow out a bit more, lose most of the hair on top and front, and a few more years of aging and graying..look just like John Quincy Adams!.... :)
Is this channel for the deaf?
Yes it is, for deaf folks who understand ASN (American Sign Nonsense).
i cant get my eyes off them ears! cringe!
Hands and neck tattoos... career limiting manouver
I'm a custom car builder for a living. It has had zero impact in my career. Heck when I used to own my own business selling tools customers told me that I looked like I fit in better (I was rather young then). The only thing it does is show me who wants to judge based on appearance. My work speaks for itself.
@@HotRodHippie my comments were not aimed at you. You're choices are made. I'm glad that you like your tattoos. I really doubt you would hear any negative comments in person. My comments were more a caution to people that haven't yet made the choice to convert themselves in tattoos. If you're a great fabricator, and plan to do that for the rest of your life (if you're able), you'll be fine. But... don't be fooled. If you'd like a career change at some point in your future... anything with a suit and tie is off limits to you. Take care if your hands, you require them for your future. Sorry to be the voice of reason. There are a few things that people prejudge others. Its human nature. Being fat and poorly dressed indicates lazy and slovenly. Potentially low IQ and low standards. People that have permanent body modifications like tattoos piercings, hoop ears etc. Puts limits on your potential. Sad to hear but it's true
@@BruceBusby that's very kind of you to allow people to choose how they look, because If you were the sort of person that would just randomly comment on someone's video to criticize their appearance and then back down as soon as you're called out that would really make you look like a spineless coward. I'm happy to see that's not what you are doing and you were simply trying to help. That said, I've found work in 3 different trades over the last 15 years with my hands and face tattooed and all its done is saved me the headache of working for judgemental pricks.
Again, not targeting you of course. With a handle like "noneyabusness" I'm forced to assume you're the type of guy that can just mind his own business instead of hassling others about how they look.
@@BrandonDanger666 oh oh, somebody got butthurt. My comments aren't welcome here. I get it. Enjoy your nametag! CEO positions aren't for everyone.
@@BruceBusby aw buddy, no need to get defensive, I said I WASN'T saying you did that.
