What a fabulous idea to give us your personal point of view re mistakes in WS Top 100 list. You didn’t only analyze each of the 100 wines. You research even deeper to provide us references of wines that are not in that list; and make a detailed comparison to confirm why those wine should have been mentioned. Some of the wines you mention are new to me. I’m very happy to look for them. Art Senes 2018 CS Magret River, from tremendous producer has to be a must. So, I think the next step is that your followers are going to be gladly waiting for Attorney Somm list. Year after year… If possible for you to do it! Thank you so much for another impressive video, John.

Yes, this could really be just a stand-alone video about 10 excellent wines - the WS list just happened to serve as the catalyst for me to put them together. I've deleted my first comment which was far too grumpy in tone. I was directing my ire at the original Wine Spectator list and not your alternative which had some great alternatives. Indeed, your alternative demonstrates the wonderful world of wine and how subjective a lot of our pleasure is. Add to that the cellar defender equation. I'm always on the lookout for them and I've discovered some really terrific wines that will never make the Spectator list.

Perhaps WS should consider a second list of the top 25 wines under $25. I think they are trying to appeal to too broad an audience, but I do understand that a lot of their viewers/readers probably don’t spend more than $20 on a bottle of wine and so to try to engage with them they have tried to include bottles they can relate to. In the end, I take the list as an interesting read where I maybe find a few wines I’ve never heard of or considered before and add them to my list of wines to try in the upcoming year. But on the whole, I rely more on videos like yours for recommendations. I especially appreciate your Cellar Defenders videos.

I think they have too many expensive wine over $200. While I understand their list is not a value list, as you 10 recommended wines show, you can have some excellent wines from $35 to less than $100 a bottle. I really like the Seghesio Zinfandel along with others from Sonoma/dry creek area. I need to start searching for your recommendations! Good stuff, John. Glad you didn't pull any punches.
I haven't drunk Gloria or Huet for donkey's years. I remember being given a present of the 1978 Gloria when I left my job on promotion in the early '80s - it was probably the best claret I had drunk to that point but I have not had it since for some reason. Must try to rectify that. Huet was the most expensive wine at a tasting I organised in the 1990s but lost out to a Coteaux du Layon at a fifth of the price in the popular vote (we tasted blind without knowing the prices).
I have been meaning to buy a bottle or two of the Leeuwin CS and Chardonnay for some time - must do that.
I am pleased you mentioned Volpaia as I have three bottles of the 2019 Gran Selezione in the merchant's cellars. Rioja is usually a good buy, imho. I will drink the second half of a 2017 I opened yesterday later this evening.

I love your recommendation for Chateau Gloria. I made the mistake of buying the ‘21 vintage because I wanted the high percentage of Petite Verdot. I’m waiting for the day when a Vino Nobile di Montepulciano makes it on the top 100 for any list; not going to hold my breath. I like wine enthusiast’s as they include a top 100 budget friendly wines, cellar and spirits. Great job also recommending Inama Soave Classico. It’s one of my favorite Italian white wines. Keep in mind that Wjbe Spectator is going for the American wine lover which is why you see a lot of Napa, New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and a Brunello.

To each is own. He reviews the Inama Soave Foscarino which I have not had, but is also somewhat more expensive. I had their Soave normale several years ago and was underwhelmed by it finding it flabby and lacking in acidity. I saw that wine again this Summer so I thought I would give a newer vintage another chance; I bought two one for me and one for a new neighbour. I was so disappointed in it which is what I suppose you reference that I went over to the neighbour and apologised. If you are interested in great Soave try any of the Pieropan wines. Their entry level which is about the same price as the Inama is in a different league. Their single vineyard ones are truly world class wines harkening back to a time when Italian whites were not bland and insipid. I tried the Inama years ago because of Wine Spectator which is a good reason for my staying away from their recommendations now including Gloria which I find rather generic and much better to be had for less money. As for VNM I believe the Dei normale was on it which is I believe an elegant wine. It was on my list of wines to send to my doctor, but it has sold out on Wine.Com. Well we at least agree somewhat on VNM. Have a nice holiday.

@@allanrinaldipaone9850 Thank you for your detailed and thoughtful comment. I mentioned the Inama specifically because that was the one that impressed me and had the type of QPR that makes it well suited for this sort of list. Not the normale which I have never recommended.

Thank you! You have invested a lot of time into analyses of WS top100 and other wines they have scored over the year! Impresive! However, I disagree in one thing - I do think that it is commendable that WS included more affordable wines on the list. I always say - premium price should translate into premium quality, and while it is not always the case, I certainly think it is worth highlighting wines that on their price level over-perform. It is much harder to make a great wine at affordable price level. And people who do not feel comfortable spending more than 20Eur of 50Eur for a bottle of wine should also be able to look up these lists and inspire to try other labels! Cheers! And thank You for the video! Great! 🥂

Great video as always John. This years WS top 100 list is absolutely garbage in all aspects, a complete train wreck. Regarding your recommendations I can only say that you made me discover the Feytit Clinet and because of you there are 24 bottles of the 2019 vintage waiting in my cellar. 2019 Feytit--Slightly less acclaim than the 2020(95+ vs 96-), but less money on futures($58 vs $74). That's why I bought 6-2019; only 3-2020. 2020/22, same price & reviews.
The more flamboyant 2020 Clinet(I understand the W.S. does the current release) took a big jump in price over 2019(futures: $75 vs $100). But the reviews on the more structured longer-term 2019 were Much better.

You had me at “In this video, we’re gonna fix their list…”🔥🔥😂 Well, there’s only one wine expert I would completely trust with that pronouncement - that’s why I watched this video in its entirety and not just once but twice.😊 Naturally, I echo your disappointment about the fact that there are only four Bordeaux wines in the WS Top 100 list. I concur with you that Chateau Gloria can rival the quality of Classified Growths and that it should have been included in the list. I haven’t tried the 2020 but I can vouch for the enthralling beauty, power, and elegance of the 2018 which I tasted and reviewed three months ago. That’s one glaring mistake, indeed! I haven’t tasted the particular Vouvray that you mentioned but I’m a huge fan of Vouvray in general and I haven’t tried one that I didn’t like, so this recommendation gets a big yes from me, too. Now the Zinfandel sounds seriously amazing! Same here, it’s one of my favorite wines to pair with barbecue! While I’m not very familiar with a lot of Australian and Napa Valley wines, I most certainly trust your taste and recommendations so I have no qualms about agreeing with you, yet again, in this respect. Likewise, I’m quite unhappy about the top choice of WS but I’m thrilled that you provided some excellent recommendations. I will be seeking out the Volpaia Chianti Classico Riserva (just love CCR!), the John Duval Shiraz, Escarpment wines from New Zealand, La Montesa Rioja Crianza, and Foscarino Soave Classico. I’ve recently enjoyed a couple of Soave Classico wines. Love your description “bone dry with refreshing acidity” so I’m really excited to look for this Foscarino. Needless to say, as a huge Bordeaux fan, I will definitely seek out the 2020 Feytit-Clinet which is so highly rated/recommended by JS, RP, JD, D, and, of course, my trusted wine authority and connoisseur, JJ!😉 Thank you for this superbly engaging, enlightening, and helpful video.
