- Codeshare agreements allow external operators to sell tickets for a route flown by another carrier. An external operator such as United Airlines can assign its own flight number and sell seats as if it were its own flight. In this video, we explore how airlines benefit from codesharing agreements.

Knowing how expensive, risky and unpredictable the aviation business is, I'm happy to see these types of cooperations between airlines. It sure contributes to make air travel accessible to a lot more people 🙏🏻
It all started with Northwest and KLM in 1989. They started codeshare flights on the Atlantic route. To express their intense collaboration, a DC-10 was painted a KLM livery on one side and a Northwest livery on the other side.
In 1998, Northwest and KLM were voted airline of the year.
Ultimately, Northwest was taken over by Delta and KLM entered into a marriage with Air France. Both Delta and AF were already members of the Skyteam alliance.
I miss Northwest. I've also flew TransWorld before in the past. Too bad now United, American, and Delta hold a triopoly of international travel in the U.S.
Good point and if you have NWA worldperks you automatically get a Skymiles account in 2008-2010 merger with DL there's a 6 added in front of your NWA Worldperks ffq. KLM has flying blue FFQ due to it merging with AF🇫🇷
2:40 I know this isn't the point, but that has to be one of the cleanest liveries I've seen lately. Minimalism done right.
Thank you for explaining this in depth. Recently my family and I flew to Rome and we booked Lufthansa from Newark. Funny thing is when I told my parents that our plane wasn’t Lufthansa and that it was United. They didn’t until I told them that both Lufthansa and United are in the same alliance team. They didn’t like that idea lol. And it happened again when we were coming home from Zurich and had to fly with United instead of Swiss, despite both airlines do fly to Newark.
funny coincidence that i actually flew on the montreal-brussels flight this summer lol
One World is also represented by Alaskan Airlines
Was going to comment this. Love Alaska!
For it has been a full-time member for 2 years now. Starting from 2021!
You are correct in North America you always have one US based the other foreign based this is seen as UA🇺🇲 AC🇨🇦 Star Alliance while Skyteam Alliance is DL AM. Oneworld is the only one to have both US Based airlines AA/AS back then 16 years ago it was this US UA🇺🇲 AC🇨🇦 Star Alliance Skyteam Alliance was DL CO NW🇺🇲 AM. From those airlines AC Star Alliance gold has domestic lounge access in PHL ORD IAD CLT PHX.
I like how you show the TPE airport.
You forgot shared loyalty points!
I am a supporter of your magazihe. Please make more videos.
Nice video. The only other partnership I can think of are JBAs (Joint Business Agreements) or Joint Ventures. This is generally where airlines are permitted to collaborate on pricing, and schedules on certain routes, plus share revenue.
Good point! We're glad you enjoyed it👌
That’s why you have to take into account the entire trip and the specific airline you’re presented with on the itinerary.
For example in the US:
If I’m flying to Asia, United has the best route network and partners. ANA, Singapore Airlines, Eva Air, Thai Airways, Asiana, Air China, Air India, and Air New Zealand in the pacific.
While if I’m flying to Latin America, Caribbean, and the Deep South, American Airliens will be the best network and partners (Delta has started to improve their connectivity in this region)
Europe and Africa I will go with Delta and it’s partners who take you straight to the Paris and Amsterdam and the connections are plentiful to other parts of Europe and Africa in particular. Delta also has good connectivity to Africa from JFK, and Atlanta.
You can also cover the low cost airlines alliances
AOG - Parts Moving within the airline network. We can get almost any part for any commercial aircraft, anywhere in the world withing 24 hours when planned accordingly. Amazing network to move COMAT (Company material).
I'm an aircraft maintenance engineer out of USA.
Wondering why cathay as foudning member of Oneworld are being left out.
It is possible for full fledged airline & low cost airline working together eg the former serving international route thereby the latter continue to transit passenger to their final destination.
Yeah there are Fly Dubai and Emirates have this kind of code sharing. Where fly Dubai is low budget-ish airline that servers Emirates with different routes and vice versa
What about budget subsidiaries eg Qantas owning Jetstar?
Think it's different as both Qantas and Jetstar are still one corporate entity while this video talks about the interconnectivity of airlines that are basically separate entities from one another
Also Jetstar passengers mostly use Qantas facilities like lounges and services. My connection from ADL-MEL on Jetstar and then onwards to DPS by Qantas uses Qantas shuttle buses and I go to Qantas lounge at the airport
Just curious but I assume KLM-air France is another airline group like IAG?😮
It is, but more like an alliance actually as both airlines are still operating separately from one another. Closest ones that are similar to IAG is the Lufthansa Group
@@Kuricang31 yeah I wasn’t sure if to call it group or alliance cause I think he called IAG a group and Alliance would be something like One World.
And AeroMexico is part of the skyteam
It's only convenient if you don't care about who's providing the service.
jetBlue should join Star Alliance
Why star? Why not oneworld?
@@jwil4286 idk
@@jwil4286cuz star alliance is better duh
Well they need to build up EWR as condition for it to feed UA Terminal C there. Star Alliance partners of UA in EWR LX OS🇦🇹 LH🇩🇪 use Terminal B in EWR and use airside bus for the UA Club in Terminal C.
Can't heard you mention founder SkyTeam Aeromexico; why's this big mistake? #Aeromexico
Aeromexico is a terrible airline that's why
@@coopa2002 still a founder member, you like it or not.
@@AVantinfluencer there's no reason to mention it because they didnt talk about all of the other SkyTeam members
