    Why do you make it look so easy I've been fighting for a week just to get the seal on

    • @JayDubCustoms
      @JayDubCustoms  4 роки тому

      Derrick, the key is to warm it up in the sun to make it a little more flexible, then use masking tape on the corners as you go along to hold it in place.

      Thanks it was 103 in southern Arizona today, and after an hour of swearing, sweating, fighting and two burnt hands I got it on I think the seal was just not a good one, talk if the others went on easy but this was a made in Brazil brand, thanks for your response, I look forward to your other videos

    Suggestion: It may seem counterintuitive, but my local VW mechanic suggested I use cotton clothesline or window sash which is close to 1/4 inch in diameter. windex and KY Jelly up the cord and wrap it around the window. The larger diameter keeps the groove open wider and makes installation so much easier. I realized because I've done the windshield twice in the past few months and first time was with something else. Hope this helps.

  • @redram646

    I have a question. I have a 73 standard bug. I'm replacing the windshield and seal. When I took the old one out to clean and prep it I found it has these galvanized L shaped things on the bottom and side pinch weld that seal goes on. A lot of people told me to just put the window in. And a lot of people said to remove them things that seals now days won't fit over them. Have you had any bugs with these parts and what do you think I should do ?

    • @JayDubCustoms
      @JayDubCustoms  2 роки тому +1

      Jessica, I'm assuming you're talking about the soft metal channel on the pinch weld. I think those were put on in the factory to hold the headliner in place until the glass was installed. And yes, I take them off too since the newer seals don't fit completely over it. It serves no purpose if the headliner is glued in place.

    The only thing I do different is I run the line twice to start. That will make any mess ups pull in the second time.

    Do you feel that the trimmer line is better than 5/16 rope?

    • @JayDubCustoms
      @JayDubCustoms  3 роки тому

      For me, the trimmer line slides easier when pulling it. The rope is a little less smooth. Just personal preference I guess.

    Can you remove a front windshield and seal together by simply kicking them out?

    • @JayDubCustoms
      @JayDubCustoms  3 роки тому

      You can but there's a really good chance you'll break the glass. If it's no good then yes go ahead, but if you're wanting to save the glass then maybe put pressure at the top and slowly push it out. I'd still cut the outer part of the seal off like I show you at 22:12.

      @@JayDubCustoms thanks for the quick response. The reason I asked is because I’ve a newer seal and window that came on the bus but the window got cracked on the road. I know the seal is only $40 but hate to waste good money.

    If I decide to replace the seals on my quarter windows before I have the headliner replaced, will I be able to reuse those seals after I have the headliner replaced?

    • @JayDubCustoms
      @JayDubCustoms  4 роки тому

      Yes, and I recommend you remove the windows to install the headliner. It takes time but it can be done. Just use some plastic trim tools like these...
      www.harborfreight.com/trim-and-molding-tool-set-5-pc-64126.html Work from the inside of the car and fold the seal back, add some silicone in the seal track as you go and work around the seal with the trim tools until you can (softly) push/pry it out. Make sure someone is on the outside to catch the glass. Hope this helps.

      I got it at a local glass company when I was in Austin, TX. They actually drove it out to my shop. But they're permanently closed now. Don't know what happened. I'd love to find some more... that one has a really nice blue tint across the top.

    How about the interior metal clamps under the seal, will it cause headliner too become loose pre maturely? Great vid

    • @JayDubCustoms
      @JayDubCustoms  4 роки тому

      Jason, it's possible. But just pull tight and re-attach that metal strip/clamp.

    • @jasonlinder9923
      @jasonlinder9923 3 роки тому

      So, 10 months later the metal clamps that my seal wrapped over, has pulled off just enough to allow water to slowly work itself in, unfortunately I think u will encounter this if your outside long enough. I think the uv rays heat, not sure caused it to slowly creep off those metal tabs. I am resetting the glass this weekend without the metal clips, I will let everyone know how it goes, wish me luck

    • @jasonlinder9923
      @jasonlinder9923 3 роки тому

      So, maybe you already know this, just saw another vid and these clips help hold the glass in an accident and the American style seal not designed for these clips I suspect. Maybe the cal seal is a bit larger, yours looks pretty good over the clips

    Wow! You make this look so easy. I am certain that skill and experience plays a big part. I am interested in a VW Beetle for a daily driver. I think I would want to drive it for a while in stock form, and see how I like it. Then determine if I would like to do any modifications, or just keep it in stock form. I have some ideas of what I would like to do with a beetle but there would be many factors which would affect the project outcome. But I would want to retain the basic beetle form for the body shell, and somewhat basic interior with a few upgrades perhaps.. But would like upgrades and modifications in drivetrain, suspension, brakes, electrical, etc.; Which would be a long term project for me. -Rob G in Sparta, TN

    Would love to see how to replace the fresh air vents, especially the windshield defroster ones. There is so little info on how to do this esp for a 71 beetle. Very little on the Thesamba, feel this is the one big gap in knowledge and the best way to proceed.. do you take the wiper motor out to do it, do you need to take the windshield out aloo - which is what brought me here.. Thanks for the video! Hope you consider the vent suggestion.! - The complete A to Z on doing this does not exist! Thanks

    • @JayDubCustoms

      M Sach, I'm actually restoring a 71 SB right now. Maybe I can work in a video that covers that. But I have the windshield out to make things easier. And the wiper motor is already in though, so I'll install vents around it. One thing I had trouble with is getting the vents to fit right in the new dash pad. The pad is aftermarket.
