    Suggestion ; you mentioned adding the 3 clips from the old scraper to come up with a total of 7. If you have a really old OEM scraper like mine it had 7 clips so I decided to take out the new clips and use all the old 7 clips. I almost made a BIG ERROR as I THOUGHT I had to drill out the strip to remove or add clips to the new scraper. Just in time and by staring down the new scraper, I realized I just had to squeeze the clip together and I could remove it !!! Whew. I DID NOT need the drill. Hopefully this will help someone not make the error I almost did. I liked and used your video for my project above all others I reviewed. Thank you.

    Great video. well explained.Im from Canada and worked for a glass company for 18 years. If i may just add two more comments of help to your video when you put the door glass back inbetween the scrapers at the very top of the back chanel that would be closest to back wheel. at the very top of that channel give it a light spray of clear spray silicone to the bottom of channel just before it goes inside the door then you can apply heavy spray down channel to the very bottom ( the silicone will run down the channel ). until you see it just start to drip out. and then same on front channel makes it so much easier to roll up and down and give the gears on the regulater a good dose of lithium grease help keep it lubed. and at the end before the door panel apply a heavy piece of plastic back on the door. keeps any moisture that gets past the scrapers from letting moisture get to the cardboard door panel which can cause a musty smell inside car plus not warp the panel from getting wet and drying out over and over. Hope this helps all you people out

    Awesome! I was anxious about tearing down the door to do this project, your video has broken each part down with great detail. I just got a 1970 and thought all the interior knobs were sun rotted plastic. When I went to replace them I noticed I had wooden knobs for everything! Never knew bugs had wooden accents, but I see all your knobs are wooden too! I sanded and varnished and they look great now!Subscribing and will be back for the next project. Great job, and thanks.

    Great video. I noticed the outside scraper at the back had a curled edge. I had this same anomaly with my Wolfsburg West “German” scraper. Also, when you had the wing window out, that was a good time to adjust (usually tighten) the hinge/pinch bolt at her bottom of the window. This keeps it so the wind won’t alter the position of the window. Snug, but not so tight that the window won’t turn, lol.

    • @JayDubCustoms
      @JayDubCustoms  3 роки тому

      Yes, that curled or bowed out rubber in the corner really bugged me. I parked the car in the sun and put a piece of masking tape on it to hold it against the window. It helped a little but still noticeable.

    Terrific video! There's a lot more to this job than I expected. I recently purchased a 1970 Beetle. The previous owner had the windows tinted and some of the tinting on the driver's side window has scraped off. The scrapers seem ok and the passenger widow tinting is fine. So I'm not sure why the tinting on the driver's side is damaged. After watching your video, I think I'll just live with it until the scrapers need replacing.

    Hey Jay, thanks for the refresher. I did mine some forty-five years ago when I was in my early twenties. The originals lasted about 13 outside years of hot California summers, and the replacements almost four times as long garaged in Oregon. It's time I replaced them again.
    My wife is a fiddler and makes like she's going to open the windwings but I don't let her since I haven't operated them since the late seventies. It's a 1963 Bug.
    One thing I'd mention - as long as the panels are out, clean out the weepholes at the bottom of the inside. They get plugged up and will cause rust. Also, you didn't have a clear plastic (visquine) between the door and the door panels? The plastic keeps moisture away from the cardstock panel.
    Finally, I love German engineering! Even in a low end product they pay Porsche quality attention to the details. Everything fits with precision. Thanks for sharing.

    • @JayDubCustoms
      @JayDubCustoms  3 роки тому +1

      Daniel, yes I always clean inside the bottom of the door, just didn't mention it. I get in there with a vacuum and even knock dirt loose with a screwdriver if I have to. Yeah, I could have replaced the sheet of visqueen but didn't have any and old ones were brittle. Thanks for sharing.

    • @DanielinLaTuna
      @DanielinLaTuna 2 роки тому

      @@AndyHinkson , no, not the original owner. I bought it from my cousin. I drove it for about ten years, then gave it to my parents who took it up to Oregon. My mom gave it back to me four years ago, when they stopped driving it.
      It’s a fun vehicle to drive around in, especially since so many people want to stop and chat about it with me. Cheers 🍻

    Would you recommend using white lithium grease (or any other product) to keep the rubber from drying out?

    • @JayDubCustoms

      Rob, the lithium is more for metal and plastic parts like the window regulator. Keeps it lubed. Never really thought of putting something on the scraper. Maybe some Armor All occasionally or another dressing for rubber.

Is there anything to apply to assist the window to move up/down easily? Really enjoyed your video. Thank you again.

    • @JayDubCustoms
      @JayDubCustoms  2 роки тому

      Thanks Angel, you may have to drop the window glass down (5:45) then press on the scraper with your fingertips and ensure the clips are snapped into the door. And maybe even roll the edge of the soft metal away from the glass towards the inside of the door. Then position the glass all the way up before tightening the bolts (29:40).

    This is a great tutorial for replacing the window scraper. We got all of it done until the window separated from the window sash trying to roll it back up. The sash was all rusted out. Waiting for that so we can finish the job. Any suggestions on getting the window to roll a little easier? It’s so tight with the felt and scraper.

    • @JayDubCustoms
      @JayDubCustoms  5 місяців тому +1

      Thanks, hope the video was helpful. Yes, I know what you mean with it feeling tight, and it'll be that way because everything is new. Only thing I can suggest... loosen the 2 bolts that hold the glass to the regulator, roll it all the way up ensuring it's aligned properly then re-tighten the bolts via the two access holes.

    The scrajpper rubber should be trimmed/cut, to butt against the center guide, so that the rubber will contact the sliding glass.

    Great videos. Any idea what size those phillips screws are for the scraper and the vent window inside the top?

    • @JayDubCustoms
      @JayDubCustoms  5 місяців тому

      The small one in the scraper is a #1. The larger one holding the vent window is a #2. That one is usually tight, so put some upward pressure on it when turning it to avoid stripping it out.

    Hi, Jay. I am in the process of restoring my 1970 Beetle and I noticed that mine doesn't have the vent wing. I'm not sure what to do with the scrapers and felt channels, do you have any advice?
    Love the videos, super helpful and informative. Keep it up 🎆

    • @JayDubCustoms

      Suzette, Someone probably removed those to install a "one-piece" window. They are primarily for looks. I suggest you find a pair of vent windows and put them back in. They keep the bug original and are nice for directing air into the car when driving in warm or hot weather. The stock scrapers will not fit correctly without them. You could most likely find a pair at a VW show and swap meet. I might have a couple, I'd have to look. What state are you in? There's 3 shows coming up this Spring in the TN and NC areas.

    Nice vid, in the uk we call the event window the quarter light. But more importantly having real difficulties with the winder mechanism. Any ideas ?

    • @JayDubCustoms
      @JayDubCustoms  Рік тому

      David, are you referring to the winder for the main door window? If so, I use white lithium grease to lubricate the track. If it's rusted bad enough you should take it out of the door and put some lube on it like WD-40 and wind it up and down until it moves easy. Then the lithium when you put it back in. Also, sometimes the 2 bolts at the bottom of the window glass come loose and then it will bind up in the felt channel causing it to feel tight. Check that too.

    • @davidgriffiths6179
      @davidgriffiths6179 Рік тому +1

      Hi yes it's the winder mechanism. Am on my second new track , lubed up as you say but I wonder if the door edge track is out of place ? Through rust etc . I have the window in after 3 days but it goes up ok but struggles to come down without a push from the top. Got rid of the fancy wonders now have the correct splined original black handle.

    Isn't there usually a spring behind the door panel right where the window crank is?

    • @JayDubCustoms
      @JayDubCustoms  2 роки тому

      Yes there is. It keeps the panel against the crank so no gap. I should have put one on it.

    I just replaced the scrapers on a 63 beetle, the inner scraper uses the wire style clip. Can you use the newer style like you used in this video?
    I believe it's a 65 and newer version with the ones you used in this video.

    • @JayDubCustoms
      @JayDubCustoms  3 місяці тому

      @goldentrunnell7450 I know what you mean with the wire type clip. I've never switched them out, but I imagine the rectangular holes in the door are the same on both early and late models. I'd have to look. If that's the case, either clip would work on the door. The newer style seems to be softer and more flexible when snapping into place. I just don't know how you'd remove the wire clips from the scraper and then attach the new type.

    Hey Jay.I was wondering about the parts that you ordered from Wolfsburg. Did it come in a whole kit,or did you have to order each part separately?Thanks Darren.

      Darren, it's 4 separate parts. Here's part numbers: 113853321D, 113853322D, 111837475B and 111837476B.

    I’m gonna do the same to my 1971, but I don’t want to add the chrome trim around the window. Can it be done?

    • @JayDubCustoms
      @JayDubCustoms  2 роки тому

      Don't think so... the trim and the rubber are made as one piece. The trim is what actually holds everything in the window. One option would be to black it out.

    The only thing crucial that you're missing would be the plastic sheeting To keep your door panel from getting wet Just FYI..

    • @JayDubCustoms
      @JayDubCustoms  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah I went back and added it, just didn't do it during the video. Yes, key to keeping the door panel dry.

    What about recovering inside of door with plastic ?

    • @JayDubCustoms
      @JayDubCustoms  2 роки тому

      Tim, yes I should have covered that step. But it's basically to keep the back of the door panel from getting wet if driving a lot in the rain, or from a car wash.

    Do you have a video or can you explain how the vent window comes out on convertible (72)

    • @JayDubCustoms
      @JayDubCustoms  2 роки тому +1

      David, sorry for the late reply but there's 2 bolts at the top... they're on the top corner, outside of the door facing the front of the car (10mm). Then there's one inside the door behind the door panel near the bottom of the door. It's an adjusting type bolt to move the vent window side to side. Those 3 are the only ones holding in the vent window.

    • @Franklynnart
      @Franklynnart 2 роки тому +1

      @@JayDubCustoms thanks so much. I will try that in the morning. I believe there is a Phillips screw in the vent channel under the seal as well
