Hornwort is a very fast grower and so is pearlweed. I love me some pearlweed carpets. As long as you have heavy subrate to keep the pearlweed down or you sprinkle in some stones with the pearlweed in sand youll be good. Shrimp and baby fish love pearlweed carpets. You can also use pearlweed with wood and thread to keep it attached to make some pretty looking "trees" also. The hornwort is great for floating at the surface for everyone. Doesnt hide babies to well but it might give them some time to get away. As for sucking funky stuff of of the water they both do a fantastic job. Hornwort at the top sucking that stuff up and pearlweed at the bottom sucking that stuff up and its really good. Ive got some pearlweed floating around in some of my tanks and i think it makes a better baby hide than hornwort. Now suswassertang is some fun stuff. Its a super slow grower but then again it doesnt need a ton of light either. Ive used it for "trees" and plant walls and its fantastic. Only issue i have with it is other plants or even the susswassertang will invade eachother and then your stuff with mixed plants haha. Baby fish and shrimp will crawl/swim threw it and keep it clean. Makes a very good hide for fish and shrimp. Java moss does nothing but grow hair algae with me. It looks good until it doesnt. I usually use it as an accent plant and keep it groomed

I have had some pretty good experiences with hornwort, which I may or may not have just grabbed out of a random lake near my house...

I dont have much success with hornwort and then it sheds all iver the place. Pearlweed does well for me. My least killifish fry love subwassertang.

It's funny how there seems to be quite a mixed level of success with hornwort. Thanks for taking the time to come by!

I find Hornwort to be my go to plant for breeding since it's really versatile. For breeding Danios, I Pearlweed worked out really well. I kept some areas short, and the back long and that kept majority of the babies to survive without taking the adult Danios out.

Both great as "working plants" but Pearlweed used in fancier aquascaping.

    Java moss and pearl weed👍👍
We actually kind of miss having duck weed, and now that we have this big, goldfish Koi turtle pond we’re thinking of starting a separate tank where we can actually grow it and then put it in as a feed because it’s so high in B12, and all the other things, and they grow so fast will try an experiment and scoop some out of the lake, down the road and see how this all works out🌱🌱😀😀👍👍

"Miss duckweed!!??" Say it isn't so lol. Duckweed is actually a great plant for herbivores. The problem is that it's too successful.

@@FishmanEricRussell right that’s what we were thinking of giving it it’s on tank we might set up a nursery and just have duck weed in it and babies and then we could scoop a little bit out every couple of days and feed it to the other fish or the pond we also thought about eating it ourselves. It’s an incredibly high source of B12.

Duckweed is great at getting around. I kept a tank of it way back, in case I wanted to use it for something. The next thing I knew I was finding it in other tanks. You know the rest of the story lol!@@jackanddan

I prefer subwassertang over java moss unless the java moss is really thinned out because some of my fish have become entangled and died while trying to swim through it.
I like pearlweed because it is so versatile (floating or planted) and it looks nice. I also like hornwort and haven't had the needledrop like other people have, but I keep it very sparse and that may be the reason.
All seem good for fry though.

I've not had Hornworth for a few years it gave me problems when I had tanks linked together with siphon tubes one pump/filter running multiple tanks it would die back and shed overnight if it wasn't happy blocking the tubes that ballast the water level across the tanks I've had java moss for around 5years it has it's pros and cons it is tough as old boots make's a great nursery for fry etc on the other hand it grows so fast and thick it soon takes the space adult fish need restricting water circulation and gathering crud that stirres up every time you touch it I only have 1 hobby tank at the moment I still keep some going my java moss and duck weed need more attention than my fish but I'm ok with that

Many have told me the same thing about hornwort. Lots of needle issues. My biggest issue with it is the constant pruning needed to keep it from taking over the tank. I guess I have the same problem with it that you have with Java moss except the mulm part. It stays quite clear. I do get that problem with Java moss though. It is quite the trap for detritus.

I think when it comes to Subwassertang vs Java moss this is a trick question. For breeding egg scatterers like Danios Subwassertang is better, BUT once the fry are born Java moss at the surface I believe is better for the fry. For that reason in some tanks I use Subwasswertang on the bottom and Jave moss at the surface. The fry like that slightly warmer water at the surface and need that soft spacious cover to dive into. It's also easier to see and feed the fry when they are at the surface, so I want them up there. As far as Subwassertang goes, I swear that stuff only grows when you're not paying attention to it. It's deceptively slow, one minute it's a clump on the substrate, then all of a sudden it's taking over the bottom of the tank. LOL
