It's amazing you all just reacted to this song: if you aren't aware, Toby Keith died last week at the age of 62 after a 2-year battle against stomach cancer. This song was written in response to the terror attacks of September 11, 2001. This song literally became the unofficial military anthem, and Toby never lost all the respect for our military. I was a first responder on 9/11 (but not at any terrorism incidents), and I can tell you that on 9/11, everybody in the USA was afraid more attacks were coming in. We were trying to figure out how to stay safe, how to save all the people who were hurt... we couldn't pull ourselves away from the TV... Goddamnit, we just didn't know what came next. That evening, the folks at my fire station showed up to help. People we hadn't seen in 2 years showed up to do whatever was necessary to help. We had a candlelight vigil outside, lined up along the apron of our apparatus bays. People stopped to take pictures, to cry with us. The next day I stood in line for 5 hours to give blood: the line literally wrapped around the entire building twice! Back at the fire station, people from all over started dropping off flowers, candles, kids wrote letters to us, told us they loved us. There must have been 200 candles and hundreds of flowers all around our flagpole, some left stuffed animals. Some preferred to drop off foods, drinks, donations poured in. Kids wanting to see fire engines and parents who wanted to let us know they loved & appreciated us. We received tons of applications to join. The common sentiment was mourning, shock, disbelief, depression, and feelings of impending doom. By September 20th, you couldn't buy a USA flag because they were literally sold out everywhere. People were putting flags on their cars, lining the sidewalks with small flags, carrying them. Criminals and cops were hugging (seriously, I know it sounds weird). In fact, for a few weeks there, nobody was a 'criminal,' or a cop. Or a prison guard. There weren't men and women. We didn't have white people anymore, or black people anymore. No Hispanic, Christian, Jew... we were all equal. We were all American. In a way, I'm glad 9/11 happened. I mean, I wish it didn't happen but for a few short weeks, we were Americans. That was the only adjective of importance. The terrorists tried to scare us and change us, and they succeeded. But not how they wanted us to change. We got mad as hell. 300,000,000 pissed off Americans standing in lines to GIVE AWAY their blood. Police departments, fire departments, volunteer fire companies, the US military all received an overwhelming influx of applications. Again, we were mad as hell! Toby Keith released this song and it just resonated with people. He went to Iraq and Afghanistan to perform for free so our soldiers could relax & destress. As I said at the beginning, Toby Keith wrote an unofficial military anthem in this song, and many would probably agree that he also became the musical face of the American military. You could probably even call it pro-military propaganda but it wasn't. It was simply a song reflecting how we all felt at the time. So there's the back story. I hope this helps you to understand WHY this song was so wildly popular. By the way, I said above about the people who dropped off stuff at my old fire station... a few of those candles remained lit for 2 weeks. We never could tell if somebody was coming by and relighting them or replacing them, but nobody ever saw anyone doing it. They even stayed lit on days it rained.
Great comment! I had just graduated high school, about to turn 18. My friends who'd joined the Marines BEFORE got sent to war, came back different people. Made me both angry and sad. I guess it was the same way when my step dad came back from Vietnam.
"We lit up your world, like the 4th of July" is in reference to fireworks, which we do almost as spectacularly as dropping ordinance. This became our anthem post-9/11. I get chills and tears every time I hear it like I am right back there in 2001. Toby was an American treasure, RIP. He visited troops countless times and went over and above each time supporting them.
To our British friends thanks for your support. Our flags have flown side by side from the Boxer Rebellion, Flanders Field, North Africa, Normandy, Korea, Iraq and Afghanistan. So a salute to the Brits and RIP Toby.
RiP Toby. I never got to see a concert. Ever the working man. I think Toby would like that. I've listened to him for decades. Thanks for you great reaction.
So you lovely Brits asked for a little American History lesson. On July 4, 1776 we signed The Declaration of Independance declaring we were going independant from your lovely country and going it alone as an independant nation. We celebrate the 4th of July today by family outings, air shows and all sorts of entertainment and most of all, plenty of fireworks as you can see in the video. And I do mean "lovely Brits". Our family served in the American military for 29 years and both fathers and my mother before that. We ended up in Great Britain for 3 of those years and fell in love with your people and your country. Sad to say Toby Keith lost his battle with cancer recently. He will be sorely missed by us all.

God bless y'all! American Soldier is another great song of his, that is in the same spirit of this song. It's more about the personal story a soldier goes through
As some people have commented already the 4th of July is our independence Day the day that we became free and a nation one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all Amen

Thank you for reacting to this, and yes, I did ugly cry. 😂😂
America has lost one of our country music hero in the last 25 years, what an American . Tobeys songs will live in the hearts of all Americans. God bless you Tody and family.
Love your reaction. July 4 is our Independence Day. “ On July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress unanimously adopted the Declaration of Independence, announcing the colonies' separation from Great Britain. The Constitution provides the legal and governmental framework for the United States.”
On the 4th of July every small town and city have a fireworks display usually goes on for half an hour or a hour or more depending on the financial status. But everyone shows up, usually with food and drinks. It's like a lawn party or family reunion, but with people you may barely know.
Someone else already mentioned why we celebrate the 4th of July but it's essentially the most patriotic day of the year and is celebrated by spending time with friends/family. Us Americans go a bit overboard with fireworks during that time hence the statement "We'll light up your world like the 4th of July."
He came while i was in Iraq and i had the honor of getting a detail to be one of his bodyguard/security. We talked for 5 minutes. He asked me where the beer was i told him i was hoping he flew some in. He about pissed himself in laughter. True American!!!
As an American Vet, I can confirm that a lot of us have family that has gone into the service. It's a part of how we got to be an independent nation, and part of it is understanding that sometimes to have peace, you have to fight.
Having served in Iraq as a marine I thank you for all the men and women who have served in all services of the USA it hits all our hearts with his passing may he rest in peace thanks again Eddy my good friend 🪖🇺🇸
I was 17 when 9/11 happened: I can't listen to this song without the memories of that day & the emotions I remember experiencing. It's incredibly visceral! But at the same time, I experience a sort of patriotic anger. We were so hurt but as Toby says, this big dog will fight when you rattle his cage. By the way, tons of artists wrote & performed 9/11 songs and they were all good for the most part, but this one... I think most would agree this is the best. People doubted Toby's sincerity when he was talking about his father but if you notice, as he says "my daddy served..." you can see he almost appears to be choking tears back. You can really see he nearly cries every time he mentions his father.
On the 4th of July in America, most Americans have a paid day off of work. We get together and have BBQ’s. We sit around in the back yard waiting for it to get dark so we can let off fireworks. If the house has a swimming pool, then we swim for a while. It can be with friends or family or both. I hope that help sum up an American 4th of July get together/ celebration.
Toby performed 11 USO tours over the years for our troops! RIP Toby! Your music will live on! You guys should check out American Soldier!!! We may fight amongst ourselves but we will fight to the death if someone comes against us. Our first President Washington said what makes us different is we will die on our feet before we will live on our knees. I feel that!
Fourth of July in the states is cookouts everywhere, fireworks going off all over the sky, to symbolize the shell bursts mentioned in our anthem. It's a celebration of our nations triumph, our survival, and a show of honor to those who bought that with their lives
This song was actually thought of as being controversial. But there's no controversy for being patriotic. Toby was a true American Patriot. He played for troops with the USO putting himself in harm's way to give support and entertain those fighting and have fought for this country. Godspeed, Mr. Toby.
Hi there! basically what the other others have said. It's a song put out right after the terrorist attacks on the world trade center. Iowan here and even 2 decades+ later this song is amazing. I do not agree with our current leadership but God dang does this song get my patriotism going. Its sad that our government/media is so corrupt anymore. Trump 2024
4th of July traditions are hamburgers and hotdogs on the grill, friends and family gathering for parades, city wide celebrations at the local parks, and city fireworks all over. I live in the Mountain West and it's amazing to sit up high on the mountain side and see the fireworks all over the valley
My grandfather was drafted into WWI at about 20 yrs old. He was a school teacher and a brilliant mathematician. He was in the 318th and faught in Argonne Forest. To save Europeans from Germany. He battled from lung problems for decades because of that battle. Was disabled but still had to support his wife and kids during the depression in Oklahoma. I never even got to meet him. Europeans criticize Americans, but we save their @$$€$ more than once and we lost our fathers, sons, and grandfathers over there. We get attacked on our soil and got criticized. Most European countries didn't want to help us.
We are so PROUD OF OUT COUNTRY. And it’s all of us. SOUTH, NORTH, EAST ,WEST. You wouldn’t travel a mile til you see a flag flying in someone yard. We went back in our family, Civil War, WW I, WW II, KOREN CONFLICT, VIETNAM, DESERT STORM, COLD WAR, then from 9-11 to NOW, someone in our family was in each of these conflicts. And yes WE ARE PROUD
I love your reaction. 4th of July is our Independence Day from of course Great Britain. We celebrate usually by barbecuing, and fireworks every where, and just celebrating those who have gone before. We also have a Veterans Day and Memorial Day, to celebrate the lives of those lost so we can stay safe and free.
This song was written in 2001 in response to the 9/11 attacks and the UA-cam vids were released much later…Toby did several tours for the USO to bases all over
July 4th is celebrated in the United States because that’s when we gained our independence from Great Britain. July 4th, 1776. Condolences to the Keith family, friends and fans.
Toby Keith's passing was especially difficult for me and my family. One of the last pictures I have of my brother Sam was of him and Toby at a USO event in Afghanistan before he was killed in action. Rest in Peace Toby Keith, my brother Sam will be happy to see you again on the other side ✝️❤️
Toby Keith Played over 200 shows for American troops in 15 countries. Plus he did 3 sold out shows in Vegas just 2 months ago while he was dying. He also setup multiple homes for homeless kids. America will miss Mr. Toby Keith RIP 😞😢
Our Fourth of July traditions typically consist of BBQ or fish fry. A ton of people BBQ on Fourth of July, shoot off fireworks after it gets dark and just have a great time with family and friends
You can do it my friend. I was born in the USA, I joined the Army at 19 and I met a guy from South Africa, he was 34. He got his citizenship and lives here now that he's out of the army. Don't be scared of standing for something 🤙🤙
Toby Keith wrote this song after 9/11 he didn't release it for 9 or 10 years until a colonel in the military told him this was the greatest song to Please Release it so in other words you know we lit up their world like the 4th of July after they attacked us that's what he means by a sucker punch came flying in the back thank you for your support we love our military God bless you🇺🇲🇺🇸🇺🇲
The 4th of July is a more different type of celebration than thanksgiving. The food usually consists of a BBQ. Lots of adults and children go to fairs with fireworks, or people buy their own fireworks, drink, ride four wheelers, and just have the best most patriotic night of the year.
What a Great American Toby Keith is ! Not only that , I know that there are many SAME Great Americans here today on Memorial Day 2024 , keep your chin up ! Your Redemption draws near , Jesus Christ will one day return . Until then don't give up the ship , you all are greatly loved ! To this young couple doing the reaction , You make this American extremely proud ! Thank you !
When he says “we lit up your world like the Fourth of July”, he’s indicating the explosive fire works we set off everywhere to celebrate the battles fought for our freedom from England’s rule…huge sky-filled displays sounding like bombs going off!

Thank you for reacting to this, and yes, I did ugly cry. 😂😂
We thank him for his service, we won't forget the battles he fought for us!
July 4, 1776 is when we signed the Declaration of Independence breaking away from England
Its huge grill outs and fireworks for the 4th of july and paties everywhere you look to celebrate our Independence
Most of us have so many family members who have sacrificed for our country. God bless Toby Keith RIP.
This song was written after 9/11 he performed for the military all over the world. Great reaction
On the 4th of July every small town and city have a fireworks display usually goes on for half an hour or a hour or more depending on the financial status. But everyone shows up, usually with food and drinks. It's like a lawn party or family reunion, but with people you may barely know.
I don’t agree with our government most of the time but no matter what I will always love our troops.
RIP Toby Keith
Actually Toby and his band made multiple trips to preform for the troops in the Afghanstan Theatre of operations.
😢❤🎉
Toby took his time to play for troops hundreds of times. RIP TK
As the granddaughter, daughter, and step daughter to Army and Air Force vets, this hits in a different way. I'll never forget how i felt on 9/11.
Someone else already mentioned why we celebrate the 4th of July but it's essentially the most patriotic day of the year and is celebrated by spending time with friends/family. Us Americans go a bit overboard with fireworks during that time hence the statement "We'll light up your world like the 4th of July."
He played over 400 concerts for the troops overseas. We love ya man.
He came while i was in Iraq and i had the honor of getting a detail to be one of his bodyguard/security. We talked for 5 minutes. He asked me where the beer was i told him i was hoping he flew some in. He about pissed himself in laughter. True American!!!
RIP Toby Keith
Miss you Toby, I hope you have an everlasting Red Solo Cup up there my friend. Rest in Peace sir.
This our second National Anthem here. Rest easy Big Dawg, gonna miss ya.
A true Patriot, we miss you Toby. Americas battle cry.
I loved watching your reaction :) this song hit super hard after September 11th. Semper fi to all of my fallen brothers.
Makes me tear up even today. Missing Toby's voice already
😭😭😭 RIP..you are so loved from an Army wife and Mother
Saw him in Iraq. Thank you Toby. RIP
The American people just want peace on earth
RIP to this amazing singer and Patriot
On the 4th of July in America, most Americans have a paid day off of work. We get together and have BBQ’s. We sit around in the back yard waiting for it to get dark so we can let off fireworks. If the house has a swimming pool, then we swim for a while.
It can be with friends or family or both.
I hope that help sum up an American 4th of July get together/ celebration.
4th of July is our independence from england
as a Canadian i Love This Song Lost A Canadian born cousin in Vietnam and many American cousins who served
Toby Keith did more to motivate troops than any politician!
RIP
The 4th is our Independence Day. It is a big party day where we light up the skies across the entire country with fireworks in celebration.
4th of July is our Independence Day from the British. Parades, cooking out, family, fireworks.
Fourth of July in the states is cookouts everywhere, fireworks going off all over the sky, to symbolize the shell bursts mentioned in our anthem. It's a celebration of our nations triumph, our survival, and a show of honor to those who bought that with their lives
Fourth of July- fireworks. Lots of them! They light up the sky!!!
He went in 11 USO trips lots on war zones, to perform for the troops. A true patriot 🇺🇸🫡
Gone never forgotten RIP Toby
This is my favorite song by Toby Keith! I have the privilege and pleasure to have seen him live many times! Goodbye to a Great Man!!!!!❤
And we have turkey on Thankgiving Day!! Giving thanks for what we have.
This song was written in 2001 in response to the 9/11 attacks and the UA-cam vids were released much later…Toby did several tours for the USO to bases all over
Toby was a true American Patriot! We loved Toby and his music! His music will live on! RIP Toby Keith! He's is missed 😢
RIP Toby! We love you. ❤
Our Fourth of July traditions typically consist of BBQ or fish fry. A ton of people BBQ on Fourth of July, shoot off fireworks after it gets dark and just have a great time with family and friends
You made a point, l was in the US Navy and l had a grandpa and half a dozen great uncles in WWII. And older cousins in Vietnam as well.
You can do it my friend. I was born in the USA, I joined the Army at 19 and I met a guy from South Africa, he was 34. He got his citizenship and lives here now that he's out of the army. Don't be scared of standing for something 🤙🤙
Be blessed in Heaven Toby. You will be missed.
RIP Mr. Keith, true patriot
Thank you !
4th of July America celebrates our Independence from Britain!
Toby Keith (RIP) if I heard right, made 17 trips into the different countries to perform for the troops. He is very loved by the soldiers.
When he says “we lit up your world like the Fourth of July”, he’s indicating the explosive fire works we set off everywhere to celebrate the battles fought for our freedom from England’s rule…huge sky-filled displays sounding like bombs going off!
Rest In Peace Toby Keith!❤❤❤❤
The 4th of July celebration is celebrating our INDEPENDENCE from England.
