I've owned many 1911s over the years, with build dates from 1912 to the present.ost have been Colts, but many have been Springfields, plus a few other brands. I am now down to three Colts and one Springfield. All are excellent firearms - I can't say that for a few others I have had. Both are good choices. BTW, the biggest weak link in the Springfield is the cast slide stop, they are prone to breaking. You can see a faint casting line in them, best to replace it with a forged part from Wilson, Ed Brown, etc. Best done before it breaks (usually while shooting, and (at minimum) your slide, barrel, etc go flying down range. Otherwise, both companies make excellent 1911s.
Hey Smash, I have an Original TRP Operator Full Rail, Bull Barrel, a Sig 1911 Scorpion Carry, no Colt 1911s though. Thanks for sharing your content with us.
Owned a Springfield loaded target 9mm. Would not run. Bought the colt and have not a had a single failure . To date I am at right around 500 rounds and again ,not a single issue. I have many 1911s but at each level I’d rather have the colt. I have Garrison’s in .45 and I love it but when compared to my colt competition I still prefer the colt. Thanks for a great review and sharing. You are correct they are both great companies producing excellent products.
In these days of purpose-built firearms, you have two 1911s with a different purpose. Because I shoot 1911s exclusively in competition, that is what I look for. About seven years ago, I purchased a Springfield stainless Range Officer in 9 mm. While it did not impress me, neither was it unsuitable. That is, with the exception of the trigger. $300 of parts and labor and it is ALMOST as good as my other two 9s. Recently I added a Colt Gold Cup Trophy to my .45 group. First time out, I realized it would require breaking in before any competition. Again, the trigger is no where near what I expect and got from the factory with my current shooters. Maybe after another thousand rounds, at least I hope.
I'm right handed. Ambi safety isn't a selling point to me. Ever since having the front fiber optic fall completely out on me, I prefer a nice white dot up front an plain black notch on the back end. It works for me. Great video. TY
This video was made for because I want to get my first handgun and it’s between these two but I heart goes to the Springfield Operator. Can you please make more videos about these two firearms I enjoy your style to make a video entertaining.
Since the Springfield has a rail, I'd lean towards it. And since it'll be almost night time capable, I'd get a night appropriate front sight. Good comparison btw!
The Colt is a ''Competition.'' Therefore, it has no rail for accessories such as light. Anyway, the difference between these guns is so minute that a regular gun owner will not experience any difference. The florescent front sight gives the colt an advantage in fast engagement, something you can see from the video when you compare them side by side, the first shot from the colt comes way before the Springfield. At the end, it is more of a personal ''like'' if you want. I have several 1911's and one from Colt Custom shop, this gun has a way better trigger than anything I have shot so far out of the box. But it has target sights so I don't carry this gun much, only when I like to be ''posh'' my carry gun is a Series 80-Colt Competition in .38 Super. 9+1
Hello. I don’t like the beavertail on the Colt (too low for hand placement). Is there any way to replace with a quality high ride beavertail? Is it possible? Can you please recommend one? Thank you very much.
I habe that colt in blue and i got a trigger job and that things hits bullseye everytime. Dead accurate pistol no malfunctions ever. Runs hollow points and everything.
Hey Smash! In observation of your video, it looks like you shoot the Colt better. Now I wasn't there, it just looked smoother to me. The muzzle flip and recoil pulse seemed smoother. I own a Garrison in 45. It shoots well for me. There have been a lot of fine detailed discussions about fit and finish that is really picky. So The Pony vs. Cross Cannons in this show down of both fine production pistols. What is the appx round count? Any teething issues? To me, 9mm is soft shooting on almost any platform. In reviewing and reading a lot, more problems seem to be encountered with 9mm on this platform. Keep Both! Don't get rid of either one.
Nice review, if you want tighter groups you have to learn how to use that trigger, squeeze, and only let out until the reset, you’re too herky jerky with the trigger.
Springfield is a a better gun in terms of quality, fit, finish , reliability and accuracy . Colt holds value better and easier to sell if you decided to in the future.
Dead wrong - the Colt does have the original trigger system (non-Series 80) without the firing pin block and the associated tube Goldberg mechanism of the Series 80, but Springfield has NEVER built a 1911 with the Series 80 style trigger/firing pin block system, always using the original firing system, same as a Colt Series 70. The Springfield differs from the Colt in having a titanium firing pin which improves its drop safety characteristics without a firing pin block.

Any good gunsmith can replace the grip safety of any 1911 with another one having any design of beaver tail you want. It will require properly fitting it to the frame, though, not a drop in fit.

I have the operator. Had a trigger job done on it. Picked up some Mec Gar mags. Shoots like a dream. Love it.
Really is a slick gun for sure.

Thanks for the comparison. It would be interesting to find out which company produced the best 1911.
Best regards from Germany.

Hey smash, love the reviews on the Springfield. Keep up the great work

Hey, smash! Love Colt, but im more on springfield 1911 side. i have 1911 loaded mc operator from springfield. I love that gun.
It was hard but the SA beat it by just a little
Hey Smash , love the Colt! Thanks
Great comparison. Gimme the Operator

My favorite gun range spring guns and ammo!!
Hey Smash! Great review, like the Colt I have a series 70 gold cup. Does the new colt have the same trigger as the series 70 gold cup?
Thank you Rodger. Love Colt 1911's
The indoor range should be pulling smoke from your shooting station. It’s just hanging in the air.

Both are good guns but I'd throw in some extra cash a go for the Dan Wesson 9mm 1911.

This was a really hard video to make for sure
I'm a Colt 1911 45 Acp. Government issue. Man. But Springfield makes a very nice 1911. Either one will keep the 2 legged or 4 legged booger man away.😊
Does the Operator take the Colt mags and vice versa?
Hey Smash. Like them both. Good looking pistol and good shooting.
Hey Smash
Thank you for a great video. Your opinion, operator or prodigy? Regardless of the round capacity…thanks.
Hey Smash !!!! Love the review
Those 1911 9mm's are fly 💯
Both are nice, but I own the Operator. I love it.

Hey Smash!
I had two squibs with 2a warehouse ammo in 45acp last month!! No more 2a shit!
No way... Man sorry to hear. I only shoot the 9mm and so far so good. No issues.
@SMASHTIME yes sir... I have alot of their 9mm and no issues so far!
Hey Smash! Great video
Is that Colt a 70 or 80 series, I understand they made that model in both.
its a 70 series
Great review brother!

😂
Howdy! And : Hey Smash! 😇
I'd go with the Springfield 🤝
Hey Smash! 👍
Great video
The Colt is a 70's series .....inherently a better trigger system than the 80 series pistols which is what the Springfield is a copy of.

Tangfolio 1911 is better than colt & Springfield

Not sure. but I would prob just sell it and get a new 1911 with a higher beaver tail. save a lot of trouble
Any good gunsmith can replace the grip safety of any 1911 with another one having any design of beaver tail you want. It will require properly fitting it to the frame, though, not a drop in fit.
