In 1998 my buddy Ka-Ho gave me a red pocket game boy in the morning before school with the pokemon red cartridge already in it. I started playing as he looked over my shoulder, as he also played the blue cartridge on a silver pocket game boy. I went to give it back to him as the bell rang for roll call. He just said "No, keep it"! He gave me a gameboy and pokemon red just so he'd have someone to trade pokemon with lol.
I have great memories of playing red by an open window at night as a spring breeze blew the curtains open and night birds chirped and called. I felt like I might have been camping on a route somewhere, hearing pidgey and spearows in the trees. The mid to late 90s to 2001 will always hold a special place in my heart. I miss it so much and I wish constantly we could revive some of what made that time better than now.

I remember when me and my sisters all got Pokemon Red and/or Blue for Christmas one year (I got it along with a Game Boy Pocket and Super Mario Land), it was the height of the Pokemon craze, it was just everywhere. Honestly, the fact that they are still making new Pokemon to this day, and that the mainline games still sell like gangbusters is proof of its lasting appeal. Still, as jaded and disillusioned as I am with the more modern Pokemon titles, I have a soft-spot for Red and Blue; they're broken, unbalanced, and glitchy as all Hell, but that's part of why I love them. There is a charming simplicity to it all, right down to the adorable in-game graphics, not counting the Pokemon's battle sprites, though even those have their own weird appeal, too. All the music in this game is seared into my soul, too, and the sound effects on top of that. I'd also like to applaud how the game manages to balance out its storylines, and how they all dovetail nicely into each other, though I guess since we're avoiding spoilers on this channel, I'll avoid talking about it here. Yes, there was clearly greatness to be had with the Pokemon series from the very beginning, in spite of its flaws.

Your part about Blue challenging you to have a better team just made me realize that he was helping you the whole time. If it weren't for him, you'd get to the Elite Four without ever knowing how to create a balanced team, because you could just find one or two Pokemon of the appropriate type to get through each gym. In the end, while he was a jerk, he was also your rival, and a rival, unlike an enemy, is something to be grateful for.

6:46 The dual rival thing started in gen 3 with Wally. He also was the first “nice” rival that isn’t super competitive like blue or silver. Brendan/may are difficult in the early game but they don’t even get a fully evolved starter by the final time you battle them in game. Wally has a much stronger team than your other rival when you last battle them in victory road and it’s also one of the most varied teams you fight in the entire series. His influence as a rival can’t be understated even if he did kind of start the trend of the weak and less powerful rivals. He is by far the best one to fit the “weaker” rival trope because he actually has interesting progression unlike your main rival Brendan/may, who fit the more competitive rival trope.

Back in the pre-internet era, methods for evolution (stone, trade) or where a certain Pkmn is located are things we take for granted today but it takes figuring out to know them at that time. How are u supposed to know that a fox rabbit thing u picked up in a building can turn into 1 of 3 different typings via a bunch of rocks w/o a manual or someone telling u? That's beauty of it. You gotta take your sweet time, explore & search wherever u can in the game, even places that were not intended.

The internet existed in some form for decades before pokemon existed, but I think they mean before it was widespread. I knew one guy who had it at home in 1995 and that was it. Then we were allowed to use it one day in high school (maybe 1997 or 98) but my buddies immediately tried looking for pictures of dead bodies so I walked away. The internet genuinely didn't interest me until I got my first PC in 2001. So for a lot of us, gaming really was about exploring for yourself or hearing what to do from irl friends. Occasionally you might buy a guidebook/magazine. That's how it was in small town Australia at least.

Adding that clip of Metroid 2 during the part about sound is great, because that game really has fantastic sound design, and also gets very creative in emulating the sounds of living creatures on an 8-bit system.
Also, I'd love to see a sort of reimagining of many of the concepts brought up here one day. Sure, there are plenty of sequels and remakes, but what I'm thinking about is taking the memorable highlights and seeing what could be done with them with the technical capabilities of today. Like, the whole concept of a rival is fantastic, so what if they had something like 10+ different rivals, all with unique strategies (one focusing on status effects, another on having beneficial natures, etc.) traveling the world in real-time. Or what if you took the League concept and made every gym into a similar gauntlet? Once you enter the challenge you're forced to battle multiple trainers in a row without the opportunity to heal, and each challenge has a themed twist, like allowing you to pick berries between each fight, forcing both trainers to switch out their Pokemon every three turns, or use specific items, or being able to pick which trainers to fight based on clues (kinda like Norman's gym in gen 3). I love Pokemon, but it'd be so interesting to see what they'd come up with if Game Freak just went "okay, let's ignore all the traditions and legacy we've built over the years and just think about different ways to take those great ideas we had at the start and turn it into something new".

@@WhatsSoGreatAboutGamingThis is part of what makes pokemon great, particularly gen 1 at the time. We all had different experiences, and shared them with each other and it helped us find all the stuff. Even the things that werent there. someone did find a working mew glitch years later, once the game was solidly into sequel titles. turns out hacking was not the only way.
i love the sense of discovery and unknowns in pokemon titles, and still play all of them without guides to this day. its just once i finish the game i need the internet to help as there isnt a nation of classrooms full of grassroots grapevine networks connecting young minds to hidden areas anymore. @kaotic300 un comparable because there wasn't a story line legendary. You'd have to compare it to non box legendaries. And it's no different from any other gen, it's just in a cave post game. Simple.
Those legendaries in new games are the exact same but because of the Internet we know everything before the first playthrough. Kanto is barebones and super lacking (let it off being the first games, but its far from good) even new game, if you only used in game content and not outside sources, then you'll have to go more out of your way or just the same as older games

For me, the first 2-3 generations are so good because of how simple they were. Back when we had roughly less than 200 pokemon in gen 2 and most designs were unique to where you wanted to catch them all. Nowadays, we have so many clones that it's boring. How many pickachu clones do we need? Why do we still have the same type quota each game? We have the same 3 element starters, the same regional bird, regional normal type, same regional bug type, regional pikachu clone, the same boring rivals, etc early on in every game.
Back then, they were fun and unique concepts. Now, it just feels like the same game recycled over and over with a fresh coat of paint. And that coat of paint isn't even great because of how crappy the graphics, textures, and pokemon and trainer models have become over the years.
The games are declining in quality where as before they were new, fresh, and innovative.

Bulbasaur is Not easy mode. Bulbasaur has more weaknesses than either of the other types, and yeah, while he does have a type advantage during the first two gyms. Bulbasaur has to get to level 13 before it learns a grass move than can capitalise on type differences. Meanwhile Squirtle and Charmander learn bubble and ember at levels 8 and 9 respectively. Even though rock/ground Pokemon resist ember, they have such a low Special Stat it doesn't matter.
Also, remember bulbasaurs many weaknesses, Spearows peck, and Zubat's Leech Life are no joke. If anything Bulbasaur is hard mode!

Bulbasaur is definitely easy mode imo. Thanks to Repel the wild Pokemon like Zubat aren't an issue, and he does just as well against Brock as Squirtle if you're not at a high enough level for Bubble, which I'm often not, especially if I lose against Blue which is a real possibility in the first match (unless you cheese it with Potion, which tbh you can do to every fight).
However, I evenly level my Pokemon though, so it probably depends on playstyle.
