What's So Great About Paper Mario? - Flattening the Competition
The explanation of what made Metroid so great is excellent, for sure. And, relatively speaking, what I am about to mention shouldn't be taken as an additive or negative to the game play itself, it has more to do with how Metroid impacted the gaming world overall. In the modern day, games (specifically action/adventure) that feature a female lead are absolutely commonplace. Lara Croft, from "Tomb Raider" being prominent in that category. But in the 80s to early 90s, to have a female character as the lead of such a game as "Metroid" was absolutely unheard of. Probably, the closest you got to this was using Peach in Super Mario Bros. II, which obviously just gives players that option as to utilizing her "glide" ability. Of course, "Metroid" did not make the fact that the character being played through the game, Samus Aran, was a female. Even the game manual refers to Samus as "he." (Woke culture today would have been up in arms about all this. lol) It was not revealed to the player that Samus is a woman until the game was defeated. After that victory, the option of playing through without the iconic suit could be utilized, i.e., Zero-Suit Samus. It is the reason that that version (Zero-Suit) of Samus Aran is included in such games as the Super Smash Bros. series, being that it was such an iconic and significant moment of video game history. What might be surprising to know today is that back during the original days/years of the game's release, their was actually a lot of surprise from different aspects/groups/factions of the gaming world that the game became even more popular after players began to beat the game and learn the truth about Samus' gender. This whole revelation would be one of the greatest contributors to the advancement of lead female characters in action/adventure video games. That's also what's so great about "Metroid." 😉
This is the mario game that feels best even to this day. Movement and physics are surprisingly advanced compared to smb3 or even smw.
I struggled with it for about 25 years but super mario world is a better game than super mario bros. 3. We're looking at smw > smb3 > smb.
I can remember finding out this game was going to EXIST by going to Toys r Us and seeing the promotional materials they had there. Had very little idea that they were making a sequel to one of my favorite games. I waited until the announced date and somehow managed to cobble together enough birthday and chore money to buy it. I was 13 years old and girls weren't necessarily the target demographic, but I spent hours playing it- the overworld music for World 8 still gets stuck in my head. I lent a classmate my SMB3 Strategy Guide after I beat the game, and was crushed when they returned it months later looking like it had been through a wood chipper.
Best Mario ever
I didn't just play this at release, I played BEFORE release. A video game store at the mall my grandmother worked in imported a Super Famicom and the necessary adaptors for a demo stand to get people excited. I'd just go to work with my grandmother and hang out at that stand for most of the day, playing through the entire game (though not understanding any of the in-game messages in Japanese). It was amazing. ...aaand my life has pretty much been all downhill from there.
the sun chasing u came from mario 2
The music is so amazing in this game! So much nostalgia! It never ever gets old! The huge hyrule field and open world made this one of the best RPGs of all time! Long live ocarina of time.
The Nerd is losing it right now 😂
How did you not even mention the whistle?
The absolute awesome thing about this game is that it took forever to beat it as a kid (until you knew where everything was).... and then it gave you a whole new adventure with everything in different places
People today have no idea of the leap that game was for gaming. It's like asking "what was so great about the Ford Model T"
It is one of the finest video games ever made. There is nothing in SMB3 that is flawed or overlooked.
It was sold out everywhere locally for months upon release. Unbelievable hype.
I distinctly remember my first time seeing this game boot up. The World 1 music kicks in, the hills are dancing to the beat, a swirl of stars magically puts Mario on the map, and I was already amazed. The showmanship, sound, and graphical flourish of the game was such an upgrade that it was almost jarring. It makes me think of how Mega Man one starts with a static title screen and Press Start instruction and after a pause the stage select appears. Now compare that to the intro music, story text, and the dramatic scroll up the building to present our hero and title screen opening up Mega Man 2. It was one of those big shifts that elevated gaming from a fun activity to a narrative art form.
I always like to think of the MM1 title screen as an example of letting players jump straight to action. Nowadays games have at least 2 (but probably 4 on average) studio logos to sit (or skip) through before they even get to the story preview or title screen.
Still the best Mario game.
This is right up there with the likes of Mario 3 & World as some of the best 2D Mario games and one of the best Mario games in general. Especially after coming off from the mediocrity of the New Super Mario Bros series ( aside the DS one ). So much originality, so much great quality and loads of fun.
Mario 2 > all others especially 3. Come at me bruh.
I still love SMB2 (US version). It’s so wild and creative.
You missed the hammer suit and giant shoe power ups
you forgot to mention the whistles
One of my favs.
The frog and bear suit were hilarious, especially when you got the mechanical boot to stomp on villand and avoid the spikes😂. Ah.. the memories lol
Now Microsoft does own ID Software through Bethesda lol
Alot of variety in the worlds
5:08 that's not impressive. All they did was move the camera a little in free-cam
4:20 accept a twin stick camera, a camera that isn't bad and gyroscope suport but those things didn't exist yet and were fixed in the remake so i won't hold it against Nintendo that would be stupid and unfair
No footage of world 8 😢
World 8 is too dangerous for people on UA-cam!
Megaman X when?
SuperMarioBros.3 was such a leap forwards while still being on the 8bit NES. For me, it was such an equivalent jump, kinda like you needed the next console to play it.
It has it all: great pacing, so much variety in level design/enemies/gimmicks, great artstyle and music... And the bosses are always a spectacle. It's an amazing rollercoaster ride from beginning to end.
I used to think world was better. I grew up with the GBA ports of 2 and World. I didn’t get 3 on the GBA until I was in my 20s and I can say that it is a superior game.
Having borrowed it to play as a kid, I didn’t realize until recently that SMB3 has lore-accurate ghosts. Boos can only be defeated by hammers, because they are made of iron!
In A Link to the Past, Link is only left handed if he's facing left, up, or down. If he's facing right, he's right handed. The combat point is still correct, but it just flips if he's facing towards the right. This is just because they flipped the sprite for the right facing Link to save space. They didn't do this for the up and down because it would have looked really weird as the aesthetic is give us a slightly tilted top down view.
Wouldn’t you love to have that picture of Mario that he’s drawing ?
Here after Fumito Ueda new games announcement.
This was the greatest game of my childhood everyone loved it.
My brother and I played it at walmart while the parents shopped. It's all we wanted for Christmas that year, and all kids talked about. Pretty crazy to see the evolution of games.
I’m still petty that blue yoshi is easy mode even though I want a challenge.
I cringed at whoever was playing in some of this footage. Some really bad moves lol
Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island are even greater
4:46 I'm sure it's not the first. I think Zelda 2 fits the description at least. A lot of the counterexamples that came to mind turned out to be later than SMB3's Japanese release. Likewise, I wonder if I could come up with other examples if i were more familiar with the Famicom library. Interestingly, I think Blaster Master is an example of the reverse situation where the overworld is the platforming section. That said the other elements of SMB3's presentation like the boardgame map certainly started the trend.
If someone has to ask this question then they aren't a true gamer lol
They're his children like we're the children of Thanos
Thanks wikipedia
It was amazing when it first came out. My brother and I played the hell out of all the early Mario games
If you showed Mario 1 and Mario 3 to someone they would not believe they were on the same system.
One thing you missed by comparing DQ1 to FF1 is that the first Final Fantasty came out after Dragon Quest 3. So comparing the two first games of each series is a bit unfair.
Excellent content :)
What are the complaints? That's a smaller list.
