Love these artists examples in the industry. The indie acts of 90s are saying `yup told you not sign'. Those indie acts that just took distribution deals ain't wealthy, but they are living well imo.

I think that for the most part there is a gap between whats morally right and what financially makes sense this is why the contract model pertaining to master wont change because most musicians signed to a major want to blow up and even though information is more assessable today than before its almost impossible still to become a star without signing to a major due to connections. You also wont find any business that will invest in anything without a massive upside for themselves and logically that has to be in music too.The contracts really just evolve over time now we have more 360s and playlists are the new radio. This problem also will continue because kanye is fighting for his masters not really for everyone elses or the next generation its a cycle that unless someone who is nice and just cares about everyone else makes a label and stops it
this is true to an extent yet the tech world for example functions completely different when it comes to venture capital.
and there's more and more folks who build their teams and become stars, think chance, macklemore, russ, nipsey, etc. all indie. I think we will see dozen in this new decade.
I'd also add that a lot of artist don't wanna just blow up and be famous. most of us just wanna provide for our families from our music. that is 100% attainable in 2020.

Ruslan KD although that maybe true, I personally don’t think indie is always good or beneficial for artists. Some artists drown in their own tasks to stay afloat even with teams. It also sometimes takes away from the artists creativity as well so the tide that a lot labels are taking with partnerships will most likely dissolve the trend there is for artists to go indie imo
"time away from artist creativity" is usually code for time away from artists laziness if we're gonna keep it a buck.
indie is the best route if someone is serious about building a business, is discipline and wants ownership. these artist are usually going to be a bit older (think Russ, Nipsey, Ryan Leslie, etc) and not compartmentalize artistry from storytelling from business. truth is, we don't know our capacity until it's stretched. My situation is I'm indie NOT BY CHOICE. but goodness in hindsight I'm so grateful I never had the chance to sign with a label.
Time will tell if Kanye's advocacy is for the collective or if it's just for individual gain. Micheal Jackson would give masters back to older black artists who had been financially reamed by the industry, so it is possible to happen. It requires a certain amount of awareness though that is only recently being revealed on a widespread basis.

There’s been a few artists in my city that have done distribution/marketing deals with empire which has enabled them to remain independent and still get some major machine muscle behind them

Ruslan, a hip hop consumer from buying tapes, street mixtapes, cds from record stores and downloading tracks and full albums from itunes how does one really support artist today. Do we still download music? I use Tidal streaming service so do we buy albums and if so from where or do we stream?
best way is from the artist directly. in my case it would be from our store, then patreon, then itunes.

they aren't lol. those are joint ventures (shady/after) artist signed to those label direct have crappy deals.

also its crazy because music distribution is almost nothing now and evolving. distro kid use api coding for distro to multiple platforms. 10 years or sooner artists will have leverage than signing to a label
are u saying the code they use is simple and as tech advances there won't even be a need for a distrokid?
@@RuslanKD yes and no. distrokid is simple to use and convenient. their team updates their stores (I.E. Spotify, Deezer, and other foreign streaming platforms ) and coding. if a label decides to invest their time and effort in figuring out what coding is needed, constantly updating their code for different storefronts apps and so on. no need for a distrokid.

i don't know but by all the digital music distros that are popping up. something is getting accessible. maybe you'll need a certain permission from the DSP or maybe a third party is giving out their API for a cost to create a amuse or symphonic distro.
