This was really cool thank you so much Emily for trying this out for ~science~! As someone who more interested in gel polish, what type of gel system would you be most interested in if Holo Taco were to ever release it? Like just the same shades in gel form? Or a "transformer"-like product to mix in with existing shades of regular nail polish? Or an all-in-one base/gel colour/gel top coat/lamp kit? (this is all hypothetical I figured I'd ask a gel pro😜)
👀🔍
Cristine! You're here! Holo!
(I may not be directed to answer, but the simpler the better. Same colors, but gel. However, holo chrome would be an amazing addition to get started on) ❤️
😲🫢🫢
NOT ME GETTING MY HOPES UP
DONT DO THIS TO ME CRIS
👀👀👀
How fitting that you used Cristine the science queen's polishes... for science. Great video! Thanks for posting :3
Tell me your a Holo-sapian without telling me you're a holo-sapian
@@mrspokitstheriot477 a holosexual if you will
I have read articles that say they dont reccomend using a curable gel top coat over a regular polish because regular nail polish can take hours to completly cure 100% so theres a oppourtunity for mold/bacteria to grow because its essentially trapping a potentially still wet layer. So this kit it really neat and has a lot of potential!
Suzie from Nail Career Education has a video on this. As long as the nails are fully dry, which can take an hour depending on the nail polish formula, you can have longevity with a top coat of gel polish. It comes down to proper nail prep too.
Oh yay! Halo taco! I also don't have the patience for normal polish to dry so I hope this works lol
What an Exciting day!!! The fact that Christine is HERE and contemplating making HOLO in gel form!!!
**Literally passes out from excitement**
👆🏾👆🏾congratulations 🎊 💝your UA-cam profile have been selected among my shortlisted winners 🥂🌹🌹🌹
I’ve been mixing gel top coat with nail polish for awhile now. It mostly works with all polishes. Thanks for sharing this little kit though it’s cute.
Same
So glad someone else is like this. I don’t see how this is different from mixing it into a top coat and then top coating it 🤷🏻♀️
I usually mix with my base coat, it thins the color, but works wonderfully
Do you do a 1 to 1 ratio like in the video? I’m wondering if maybe using less gel polish would help with opacity while still getting good results 🤔 but I’ve never tried!
@@karentraficante2611 yes I do a 1 to 1 ratio. I’ve never really had an issue with the opacity. I do thin layers and build up the color if needed. But it’s always pretty close to the original.
I have tons of indie polishes that I've spent tons of money on that I dont use anymore. It would be awesome if I could just mix them with gel top coat!
You absolutely can! I do it all the time.
Omg me too I'm really excited now 😁
You SHOULD be able to use any polish and top coat, barring weird chemical reactions. Most polishes are the same basic formula.
Look at one of Suzie's (nail career education) videos, it's an older one, about the "sandwich technique" very helpful for those who want to use regular polish with a gel TC on natural nails
Lmk if you want to sell them 👀👀
I’ve had success with different polishes and topcoats and it always seems to work well. BUT it does dilute the polish so you ALWAYS need extra coats for full opacity. Thanks for the content, I 💖 you, Emily!
I've been begging Christine to do gels for years. I'd heard before that this mixture will work too. But it's great to see it in action and well-tested! ❤️
You just blew my mind and opened up my world 🤯😂❤️ I have so many regular polishes I’ve acquired but cannot sit for them to dry so this just made my day!
The speed at which I clicked on to this video could give Sonic a run for his money. I hope this worksss
😝

Exactly the same!
I am genuinely shook!!!! I have been begging Cris to make a Gel line!!! Now I can finally support her and buy the entire Halo stock! Thank you Emily I'm so stoked.
I actually love this brand! There top coat base coat and primer are definitely one of the best on the market.. there the only gel products i actually buy in the drug store
I just sandwich Holo taco 🌮 between Gel top and base. And it works! Holo Taco is my GoTo collection! But yes the polish has to completely dry. But this is how I do my nail. I also switch out my brushes for her thick brushes. I might try mixing the top coat
Just a heads up cos the HT thicc brushes are pretty expensive. The kbshimmer wide flat brush replacements fit right into the HT caps.
@@mrspokitstheriot477 Thanks! I will get me some of those on my next go around. Good looking out!
Im interested in how well it lasts/if it truely behaves like gel polish over time as well 🙏🏼🙏🏼
This is going to be life changing for me!! I have hundreds of dollars of holo taco on my nail polish shelf that I can't use, because my nails are so weak and things peel, the only way I've been able to help my nails grow and be strong has been gel. I've been dealing with all the problems you've described with layering gel and regular nails and it's been heartbreaking. After giving up for a fourth time, I have hope again for my nails!!! Thank you!!!!
I think the wrinkling happens because it actually takes polish about 24 hours to fully dry. It messes with the gel that some moisture/alcohol is still in the polish when using a gel topcoat. You can usually use a gel topcoat if you just add it the day after doing the polish, but that sort of defeats the purpose of avoiding smudges and all that.
Ok, I'm definitely experimenting with polish and gel tonight! I'm really curious how far you can push the working time, if it can be stored for any amount of time, how it works using base coat instead or even other gel colors, so many questions!! It definitely affects the opacity, but I kinda like that it turned into a nice smooth jelly polish. The possibilities are endless!!
Omg yasss the possibilities lol I kinda wanna update for the experiments 😆
Please update us on your findings!!😁👍
@@glorygloryholeallelujah I will!
I use Halo Taco alot with my press-ons... I generally apply the regular polish then let it dry for a very long time like maybe an hour, then apply a gel top coat to seal, but also I'll sometimes mix it with a gel base coat then apply it and it works fine
Me too! So many questions as well, so intrigued!
That consistency of the nail polish that you mixed with the solution would be great for when you do the glass mirror nails like the ones you did a few videos back. They came out so cute. Maybe next time when you do another glass mirror nails you can use that kit. Cant wait to see what nail ideas you do for fall/Halloween this year. Hopefully your husband can be featured in a video soon. He gives out such a good vibe like you. Your guys’ Ora is so humble. I love it. Give the doggies a huge hug from me. Hugs and kisses from California. Take care and god bless
omg I have Circuit Breaker, it's literally so gorgeous at full opacity. I haven't used it since I transitioned to gel! I always thought about mixing but assumed it wouldn't work, but HERE WE ARE! thank you for being the gel polish science queen! lol
I've been doing this for awhile now. I started out with so many regular polishes, I had to figure out how to use them once I moved over to gel. Once you go gel, you never wanna go back.😅 I'm glad I'm not the only one who does this now. It's a shame to let perfectly good polish go to waste. 🥰
This literally blew my mind!! I have a huge collection of regular polish that I have had for years and don’t know what to do with it since I only use gel n acrylic now!! So now I can at least use some of it!! lol!! Now I gotta buy an enormous amount of top coat!!
use regular nail polish then on top put gel nail polish 💅🙃🙃 the same effect
I legit haven’t bought any of her nail polishes for this exact reason, if it works you bet I’m gonna be saving my coin to buy some of her polishes. I was recently watching her live stream and literally put in chat this exact thing! Excited to see how this goes
Also the only shades I have were from the unicorn/cloud collection from years ago
If you mix polish with hard gel it usually works as long as it's not a lot of polish your adding. I've been loving your videos MORE than usual (which is a lot of love) ❤️ of late. Your creatively is flowing. 👍 Blessings to you, David and the doggos, from across the pond, Scotland. 🙏 🏴 ✌️
I’ve been doing this with topcoat for my pedicures because I have a favorite red sparkly regular polish one. It’s super awesome!!
Yoooo I've been wanting to try gels, catch me turning all my polish into gels now👀 Thank you for the video Emily!!
I've never mixed gel top coat into my traditional polishes, but I've totally topped off my manicure with gel. Never had an issue. Yes, I usually wait until the next day, regardless of the brand I'm using off traditional polish, but that's only because of time constraints. Also, I absolutely LOVE Holo Taco
@Emily - The 1st set of gel I ever bought was this brand. I used EVERYTHING in the bottle. It is a great middle ground gel polish that makes it accessible to many people that may not have a Sally's near them. Love your videos and you. Thank you for being honest with your struggles as it helps me and others cope with ours.
This is so cool! Once I started using gel, I just can't go back to regular nail polish because of the drying time. I can't wait to experiment with other gel top coats. Super fun! ❤️
I've mixed top coat with nail polish before and it's worked really well for me!
If Cristine ever makes holo taco a gel polish, I will have all of them
same sis
Been in "a mood" and just watching your vids 24 hours pretty much. Relatable.
Hope everything’s okay 💞
@@EmilySusanah Your content is helping. Not from this vid but I want all the glitter from the combo vid. Wow.
im obsessed with holo taco & have almost all of their polishes, but have been wanting to start with gel lately so nail art is easier. this video just made the guilt of abandoning all my ht polishes vanish lmao. this is so cool!
You can turn any regular nail polish into gel polish just by mixing equal amounts of nail polish with any clear gel base (which is what I think is in your bottle of "gel to polish"). I've done it and it really works. The only problem is that, after a few minutes, the nail polish starts drying and you get small lumps in your mixture, so you can only do one coat and then you have to discard the rest. If you need a second coat, you'll have to make another mixture. So it makes you waste a lot of product (unless you are able to calculate exactly how many drops of product you need to do each coat). Still takes a lot of time (if you need 2 coats in each hand you will need to make 4 different mixtures and if you need 3 coats, that will be 6 mixtures). Or you can mix half a bottle of your favourite polish with half a bottle of a gel base then put it in an empty polish container (it cannot be transparent because the sunlight will cure it). It's a lot of work. Better just buy regular gel polish. But it is a nice experiment.
Thank you so much for this idea. Generally, I'm allergic to gel polish, but I have been wearing OPI gel topcoat over normal polish as this one doesn't cause me any issues. I've mixed OPI gel topcoat with OPI normal polish and it worked! This is going to save me so much time as I usually do my nails at night to avoid any smudges. Now I can do them earlier, and get on with the rest of day :)
I have tons of polish and after transitioning to gel polish I started mixing my gel top coats and regular polishes a lot and I’ve never really had a problem, except that if it sits out too long it can get a bit sticky because the polish is drying but that’s to be expected.
Holo Taco is my favorite nail polish brand 😻😻😻
I regularly use "normal" nail polish with a gel top coat. I let the polish dry overnight and then put the gel on the next morning and it makes the polish last for AGES. but you do still have to wait for the polish to dry. I like it best when I'm making press-ons so I don't have to sit there waiting for it to dry.
Yes I’ve found the same for me. Has to be overnight. Idk what it is nail biology, weather, the polish ingredients but I always seem to get at least one nail ruined unless I let dry overnight. It’s a little hassle to me so I don’t do it much lol. But I would usually paint at night and go to sleep and wake up and top coat lol
Thank you so much for trying this out, I've had my curiosities but no time to try it for myself. Very interesting that there's a kit, I never knew, was just always curious to see if mixing polish with top coat would work. Glad it see it works! I used to paint my nails all the time, but since I've had my baby who is 2 now, I haven't had the time to do them with regular polish. I switched to gel, but kept my polishes because I have so many since that's what I used to use. Definitely glad to see it works! Thank you again for the video! 😇💕
Traditional Polish is my NEMESIS!! Creme gel girlie til I die!! It's thin enough to self level and thick enough not to flood the sidewalls and if you mess up you can just start over since you didn't cure yet! Best part is once it's cured its damn near INDESTRUCTIBLE and LASTS and LASTS!
I have always done a second layer of regular gel top coat when I get a few wrinkles and that helps.
I use base coat/top coat with regular nail polish for for YEARS! Works so good with all polishes I’ve used over the years even with older polishes.
I'm a Yankee girl and omg I need to do this! I actually like the sheerness, and yes we need some Holo Taco gel polish! 💙💙💙
I’ve been mixing regular polish and top coat for years, especially when I first started doing my own acrylics/hard gel nails and my gel polish collection was lacking. I thought everyone knew that you could do this lol. In my experience there are some polishes that do not work well with mixing. I’ve noticed higher quality polishes seem to work better. I love that blue with the holo on top, so cute!
👆🏾👆🏾congratulations 🎊 💝your UA-cam profile have been selected among my shortlisted winners 🥂🌹🌹🌹
I do this with acrylic paint sometimes 🤭🤭
I felt so smart when I started doing this and then I noticed it wasn’t unique to me. We’re all just female scientists.
I got a sensationail gel polish starter kit in 2012 and the lamp is the same and its still working great, so I totally agree on the quality.
I do this with regular top coat. I like adding glitter and a bit of polish for a jelly glittery look. I have a ton of glitter so it's a good use of it for me.
The top coat + polish trick has been around for ages. It's a quick hack to get your polish on and done and was more popular in the early days when gel wasn't in every shade imaginable but polish was.
Wow I would have never thought of doing this! I love Holo Taco but only do it for pedicures cuz I can't wait for it to dry ~ I'm gonna try next time I do my nails!
I've used regular gel top coat and mixed it with nail polish for nail art before and it worked just about the same. It's a great hack if you need a color in a pinch
👆🏾👆🏾👆🏾congratulations 🎊 💝your UA-cam profile have been selected among my shortlisted winners 🥂🌹🌹🌹
I JUST unboxed my holo taco birthday present and painted my nails and then opened youtube and was so excited, my two favorite nail people together!

I've used a medium viscosity builder gel mixed with polish and that works too. The polish doesn't seem to thin out so much although it could be I was using thicker polishes.
What ratio of builder gel : polish do you use?
That's pretty cool. I may get this in the future when I feel like using gels cuz I have over 1000 polishes and would never want to abandon them
Thank you for testing the normal top coat, I was thinking would normal top coat work and then you tested it.
That blue is such a pretty colour 💙
I‘m living for this dark blue jelly polish😍🤩
Omg no way I can take my favorite regular polish and make it gel with gel top coat!!!! OMG thank you so much for this science experiment!!!!! You made my day/week/year!!!!!
This could be a great new hack bc even tho I've been doing gel for years, I still have a ton of regular polishes I never use. I hope the topcoat won't dilute opaque or pastel colors the same way
Wow. There are so many beautiful, gorgeous, fantastic handmade indie polishes you could try this with- I like🙂
a lowkey collab of royalties! i never knew i needed this until i watched this and now my life is complete! as someone who has moved on from polish to a gel phase in nail art, imagining a holo line by simply but in gel form would be amazing!
honestly i've had a pretty easy time just top coating regular polish without mixing it or anything. I do polygel, and then go over it with polish and then top coat it and it hasn't given me any issues so far. I prefer thinner polishes so that might have something to do with it!
For anyone wanting to save a bit of money, you can do this with regular gel top coat also!!! I do it all the time. I'm sure the product in this kit is just a gel topcoat.
Edit: oops, I seen you mentioned and tested it! I remember a while back you got some regular polishes sent to you and said you wished it was gel. And I mentioned then that you could turn polish into gel and how to do it. I have probably thousands of regular polishes that I cannot bring myself to throw away, since I've been doing my nails since I was a teen. So when I started doing gel instead, I wanted to see if I could mix them and turn them into gel so I did not have to throw them away. So yeah, my thought is the "transformer" is just a gel top coat.
I’ve been doing this for a while with regular gel top coat. It’s amazing!
I have used gel top coat over regular nail polish before when I couldn't afford gels in all the colors I wanted, and oddly enough the more expensive the nail polish the less well it did with gel top coat. If you want to put gel top coat over nail polish I'd honestly recommend dollar store nail polish. Something about "cheap" nail polish makes it dry soooo fast and secure to tips/press ons. I have had sets of nails with dollar store nail polish as the base last me wayyy longer than I would care to have the same set on. On the other hand, the 5 different nail polish colors that I have that are something you'd get from a Sally's crinkled or lumped up after the top coat even after letting them dry overnight. I don't think you can avoid that for certain nail polish brands but the cheap ones from dollar stores have no problem!
Essence sells Quick Dry liquid in a bottle with a dropper. It's awesome for doing toenails (mainly where I use nail polish). Just a few drops and the polish dries/sets.
I can recommend that multichromes and all the Unicorn Skin toppers. Both are available as package on the Holo Taco website and it works out a bit cheaper to get each set than all the bottles individually. Frost Light also is a lovely polish. I've been using nail polish since the mid 1980s so have tried several different brands over the years. I've never had acrylics/gel nails though, but out of them all so far I think Holo Taco have honestly been the best. They wear well if they are applied over a base coat and under a top coat (I've also tried them with no top coat and over a peeling base - this makes them more susceptible to chips and cracks). I really enjoyed watching what you did with this set and how it worked with Holo Taco products.
About 2 years ago , when trying some nail art. I mixed nail polish & clear gel . It helps so the polish doesn’t dry and you get the colour you need.
I always mix gel top coat mixed with polish and works, also lasts as the regular gel would do
Oh….my….Gawd.
*THE NAIL POLISH WORLD JUST GOT ROCKED BY THIS DISCOVERY!!!!*
😱😍🥳
oh im so excited about this!! i had no idea this was a thing! i cannot use regular nail polish, it chips within in a day no matter how much I prep my nail. gel polish was a complete game changer for me, however I still love holo taco and have a bunch of regular polish that I don't really use. if I wanted to use my holo taco I would sandwich it between gel polish but I would have to wait hours, sometimes I just let them dry overnight and do the top coat in the morning. definalty going to be trying the mixture of top coat and regular polish next time I do my nails!! love this video!
👆🏾👆🏾congratulations 🎊 💝your UA-cam profile have been selected among my shortlisted winners 🥂🌹🌹🌹
This video changed my entire existence with nail art because o love Holo Taco polish and have a great many but I hate the drying time!
I mix regular polish with polygel... works great!
It's $40 with $15 shipping to me so I'm excited to try the top coat method 😊
Thanks so much. I bought 5 halo taco (not realizing it wasn't gel) will def try this!
Omg, I’m gonna have to try this. I love holo taco but I use gel more because if I’m in a rush gel is way quicker
the sensationail gel kit was my first ever kit and was what made me start liking using gel polish. all of their products are high quality and have never failed me. if you look through my nail storage, you’ll literally just see a bunch of random gel polishes and top coats of theirs floating around from old kits 😂
Ohh I loved this! I love you and I love Cristine so this was a pleasant "collab" hahahh I only wear regular polish but once I bought a gel top coat (can't remember why lol) and decided to try it on my nails once after a few days of having painted it and it looked amazing! And yes definitely gel is shinnier than regular polish and also much more smoother.
So cool to know I can mix the two! Opened up some options for me. And loveee holo taco!
RIGHT ON! I have so many freaking polishes that have not gone bad and I don't use them. I was going to throw them away. Now I'm going to buy a lot of top coat and mix them!
Cool trick I would def use a top coat with sticky layer so you get the best adhesion.
Ohhhhh this is EXCELLENT news! I have so many regular polishes in gorgeous colors (HT linear holos for one!), but my body chemistry basically requires gel if I want more than 3 days with my mani. You've changed my life!
AHHH!! I have over 30 holo taco nail polishes and recently fell in love with gel polish but I can have the best of both words and use my holo taco and have gel!! 🥺
I've used gel topcoat mixed w normal nail polish and i've tried it w all the polishes i have and it works every time! i would say the kit you tried is worth purchasing if you don't have a lamp, primer, etc. but otherwise buying gel topcoat is just as reliable!
You can do this using any clear gel. I use gel base coat and mix 50/50 with regular polish and it works just as good as these kinds of kits
👆🏾👆🏾congratulations 🎊 💝your UA-cam profile have been selected among my shortlisted winners 🥂🌹🌹🌹
Hey this was my first lamp! Similar set but mine also had 2 itty bitty color gels and a 2 in 1 top and base coat. I ended up using the two in one for topcoating my swatch sticks, and never actually used the polish to gel thing off it. Was good for a beginner but I'm upgrading now to a larger lamp with buttons and a timer dispay
Doing this with my nail polish and gels RIGHT NOW!!
Awesome Emily!! I'm impressed. Thank you for experimenting and sharing the results. 🥰❤
Yesss! I am gonna try that gel top coat hack!! I have several polishes that I love the color but hate the wait, and now i can use all my colors ☺️ hopefully it works
OMG thank you for trying the top coat and regular polish! I've been moving more toward gel polish but still have a lot of regular polish that I love, this will be such a game changer!
I've actually used that transformer a lot. I typically use the method of putting down the polish and then top coating it (I don't like losing the opacity). But also, I do a lot of art in acrylic paint and the transformer does a really good job of protecting the art (a regular lacquer nail polish can melt the acrylic paint and/or smear it). But I will say, even with the transformer, I typically paint the base color at night and wait till the next day to top coat because once there is gel on top the base lacquer will not dry any further (which is why you get the rippling).
This may be a bit late, but while watching it made me curious too, so I tried mixing gel base coat (modelones) with regular polish (a left over Avon one my mom gave me a while ago) and it turned out just fine too. Then you tried top coat lol. So definitely not a “one off” situation.
Wow those are holo !! So pretty ❤
I feel like nail worlds are colliding and I'm pumped 🤣
Walmart sells this brand, that have a bunch of gel colors, they have the lamp and a bunch of kits with chrome powder, and other kinds of kits. They even have a "peel off base kit"
I love this video! I think you would have got a less transparent look if you used black or white gel colour as a undercoat! ?
Emily! You should try posting UA-cam shorts, your channel is amazing but when I started posting shorts I grew A LOT. I love you so much and the nails look great 💗
I am sooooo shocked rn!!! Where has this product been?!?!? I'm so impressed that it actually works! I love Christine and want to be supportive, but I have ptsd when it comes to nail lacquer. Back in the "old days" (90s/early 2000s), I almost never made it home - or even to my car- without bumping a nail. My nail tech would get so mad at me!! 😬😬
I'm very excited about this discovery. I have a glow in the dark topper with bats I was sad I want going to be able to use so ce I work exclusively with gel now. NOW I CAN!!!!
This is so interesting, love Holo taco lots. Love the cute set you did 💙💙💙💿💿💿✨✨✨
I’ve been asking forever for her to make her polishes gel too, this could be a game changer 🤩💗
My mind is blown right now - I never thought mixing gel with normal nail polish would work 🤯🤯 I'm so excited haha
