This was really cool thank you so much Emily for trying this out for ~science~! As someone who more interested in gel polish, what type of gel system would you be most interested in if Holo Taco were to ever release it? Like just the same shades in gel form? Or a "transformer"-like product to mix in with existing shades of regular nail polish? Or an all-in-one base/gel colour/gel top coat/lamp kit? (this is all hypothetical I figured I'd ask a gel pro😜)
Cristine! You're here! Holo! (I may not be directed to answer, but the simpler the better. Same colors, but gel. However, holo chrome would be an amazing addition to get started on) ❤️
I have read articles that say they dont reccomend using a curable gel top coat over a regular polish because regular nail polish can take hours to completly cure 100% so theres a oppourtunity for mold/bacteria to grow because its essentially trapping a potentially still wet layer. So this kit it really neat and has a lot of potential!
Suzie from Nail Career Education has a video on this. As long as the nails are fully dry, which can take an hour depending on the nail polish formula, you can have longevity with a top coat of gel polish. It comes down to proper nail prep too.
Do you do a 1 to 1 ratio like in the video? I’m wondering if maybe using less gel polish would help with opacity while still getting good results 🤔 but I’ve never tried!
@@karentraficante2611 yes I do a 1 to 1 ratio. I’ve never really had an issue with the opacity. I do thin layers and build up the color if needed. But it’s always pretty close to the original.
I’ve had success with different polishes and topcoats and it always seems to work well. BUT it does dilute the polish so you ALWAYS need extra coats for full opacity. Thanks for the content, I 💖 you, Emily!
I am genuinely shook!!!! I have been begging Cris to make a Gel line!!! Now I can finally support her and buy the entire Halo stock! Thank you Emily I'm so stoked.
I've been begging Christine to do gels for years. I'd heard before that this mixture will work too. But it's great to see it in action and well-tested! ❤️
I have tons of indie polishes that I've spent tons of money on that I dont use anymore. It would be awesome if I could just mix them with gel top coat!
Look at one of Suzie's (nail career education) videos, it's an older one, about the "sandwich technique" very helpful for those who want to use regular polish with a gel TC on natural nails

This is going to be life changing for me!! I have hundreds of dollars of holo taco on my nail polish shelf that I can't use, because my nails are so weak and things peel, the only way I've been able to help my nails grow and be strong has been gel. I've been dealing with all the problems you've described with layering gel and regular nails and it's been heartbreaking. After giving up for a fourth time, I have hope again for my nails!!! Ok, I'm definitely experimenting with polish and gel tonight! I'm really curious how far you can push the working time, if it can be stored for any amount of time, how it works using base coat instead or even other gel colors, so many questions!! I use Halo Taco alot with my press-ons... I generally apply the regular polish then let it dry for a very long time like maybe an hour, then apply a gel top coat to seal, but also I'll sometimes mix it with a gel base coat then apply it and it works fine
I actually love this brand! There top coat base coat and primer are definitely one of the best on the market.. there the only gel products i actually buy in the drug store
That consistency of the nail polish that you mixed with the solution would be great for when you do the glass mirror nails like the ones you did a few videos back. They came out so cute. @Emily - The 1st set of gel I ever bought was this brand. I used EVERYTHING in the bottle. It is a great middle ground gel polish that makes it accessible to many people that may not have a Sally's near them. Love your videos and you. Thank you for being honest with your struggles as it helps me and others cope with ours.
I just sandwich Holo taco 🌮 between Gel top and base. And it works! Holo Taco is my GoTo collection! But yes the polish has to completely dry. But this is how I do my nail. I also switch out my brushes for her thick brushes. I might try mixing the top coat
I think the wrinkling happens because it actually takes polish about 24 hours to fully dry. It messes with the gel that some moisture/alcohol is still in the polish when using a gel topcoat. You can usually use a gel topcoat if you just add it the day after doing the polish, but that sort of defeats the purpose of avoiding smudges and all that.
I've been doing this for awhile now. I started out with so many regular polishes, I had to figure out how to use them once I moved over to gel. Once you go gel, you never wanna go back.😅 I'm glad I'm not the only one who does this now. It's a shame to let perfectly good polish go to waste. 🥰
a lowkey collab of royalties! i never knew i needed this until i watched this and now my life is complete! as someone who has moved on from polish to a gel phase in nail art, imagining a holo line by simply but in gel form would be amazing!
I've never mixed gel top coat into my traditional polishes, but I've totally topped off my manicure with gel. Never had an issue. Yes, I usually wait until the next day, regardless of the brand I'm using off traditional polish, but that's only because of time constraints. Also, I absolutely LOVE Holo Taco
I legit haven’t bought any of her nail polishes for this exact reason, if it works you bet I’m gonna be saving my coin to buy some of her polishes. I was recently watching her live stream and literally put in chat this exact thing! Excited to see how this goes Also the only shades I have were from the unicorn/cloud collection from years ago
This is so cool! Once I started using gel, I just can't go back to regular nail polish because of the drying time. I can't wait to experiment with other gel top coats. Super fun! ❤️
I have tons of polish and after transitioning to gel polish I started mixing my gel top coats and regular polishes a lot and I’ve never really had a problem, except that if it sits out too long it can get a bit sticky because the polish is drying but that’s to be expected.
This literally blew my mind!! I have a huge collection of regular polish that I have had for years and don’t know what to do with it since I only use gel n acrylic now!! So now I can at least use some of it!! lol!! Now I gotta buy an enormous amount of top coat!!
I do this with regular top coat. I like adding glitter and a bit of polish for a jelly glittery look. I have a ton of glitter so it's a good use of it for me.
The top coat + polish trick has been around for ages. It's a quick hack to get your polish on and done and was more popular in the early days when gel wasn't in every shade imaginable but polish was.
OMG thank you for trying the top coat and regular polish! I've been moving more toward gel polish but still have a lot of regular polish that I love, this will be such a game changer!
I regularly use "normal" nail polish with a gel top coat. I let the polish dry overnight and then put the gel on the next morning and it makes the polish last for AGES. but you do still have to wait for the polish to dry. I like it best when I'm making press-ons so I don't have to sit there waiting for it to dry.
Yes I’ve found the same for me. Has to be overnight. Idk what it is nail biology, weather, the polish ingredients but I always seem to get at least one nail ruined unless I let dry overnight. It’s a little hassle to me so I don’t do it much lol. But I would usually paint at night and go to sleep and wake up and top coat lol
I've used a medium viscosity builder gel mixed with polish and that works too. The polish doesn't seem to thin out so much although it could be I was using thicker polishes.
Essence sells Quick Dry liquid in a bottle with a dropper. It's awesome for doing toenails (mainly where I use nail polish). Just a few drops and the polish dries/sets.
This may be a bit late, but while watching it made me curious too, so I tried mixing gel base coat (modelones) with regular polish (a left over Avon one my mom gave me a while ago) and it turned out just fine too. Then you tried top coat lol. So definitely not a “one off” situation.
I've used regular gel top coat and mixed it with nail polish for nail art before and it worked just about the same. It's a great hack if you need a color in a pinch
Thank you so much for this idea. Generally, I'm allergic to gel polish, but I have been wearing OPI gel topcoat over normal polish as this one doesn't cause me any issues. I've mixed OPI gel topcoat with OPI normal polish and it worked! This is going to save me so much time as I usually do my nails at night to avoid any smudges. Now I can do them earlier, and get on with the rest of day :)
Omg no way I can take my favorite regular polish and make it gel with gel top coat!!!! OMG thank you so much for this science experiment!!!!! You made my day/week/year!!!!!
Ohhhhh this is EXCELLENT news! I have so many regular polishes in gorgeous colors (HT linear holos for one!), but my body chemistry basically requires gel if I want more than 3 days with my mani. You've changed my life!
Traditional Polish is my NEMESIS!! Creme gel girlie til I die!! It's thin enough to self level and thick enough not to flood the sidewalls and if you mess up you can just start over since you didn't cure yet! Best part is once it's cured its damn near INDESTRUCTIBLE and LASTS and LASTS!
Thank you so much for trying this out, I've had my curiosities but no time to try it for myself. Very interesting that there's a kit, I never knew, was just always curious to see if mixing polish with top coat would work. Glad it see it works! I used to paint my nails all the time, but since I've had my baby who is 2 now, I haven't had the time to do them with regular polish. I switched to gel, but kept my polishes because I have so many since that's what I used to use. Definitely glad to see it works! Thank you again for the video! 😇💕
Hey this was my first lamp! Similar set but mine also had 2 itty bitty color gels and a 2 in 1 top and base coat. I ended up using the two in one for topcoating my swatch sticks, and never actually used the polish to gel thing off it. Was good for a beginner but I'm upgrading now to a larger lamp with buttons and a timer dispay
oh im so excited about this!! i had no idea this was a thing! i cannot use regular nail polish, it chips within in a day no matter how much I prep my nail. gel polish was a complete game changer for me, however I still love holo taco and have a bunch of regular polish that I don't really use. if I wanted to use my holo taco I would sandwich it between gel polish but I would have to wait hours, sometimes I just let them dry overnight and do the top coat in the morning. definalty going to be trying the mixture of top coat and regular polish next time I do my nails!! love this video!
You can turn any regular nail polish into gel polish just by mixing equal amounts of nail polish with any clear gel base (which is what I think is in your bottle of "gel to polish"). I've done it and it really works. The only problem is that, after a few minutes, the nail polish starts drying and you get small lumps in your mixture, so you can only do one coat and then you have to discard the rest. If you need a second coat, you'll have to make another mixture. So it makes you waste a lot of product (unless you are able to calculate exactly how many drops of product you need to do each coat). Still takes a lot of time (if you need 2 coats in each hand you will need to make 4 different mixtures and if you need 3 coats, that will be 6 mixtures). Or you can mix half a bottle of your favourite polish with half a bottle of a gel base then put it in an empty polish container (it cannot be transparent because the sunlight will cure it). It's a lot of work. Better just buy regular gel polish. But it is a nice experiment.
This could be a great new hack bc even tho I've been doing gel for years, I still have a ton of regular polishes I never use. I hope the topcoat won't dilute opaque or pastel colors the same way
Ohh I loved this! I love you and I love Cristine so this was a pleasant "collab" hahahh I only wear regular polish but once I bought a gel top coat (can't remember why lol) and decided to try it on my nails once after a few days of having painted it and it looked amazing! And yes definitely gel is shinnier than regular polish and also much more smoother.
I've actually used that transformer a lot. I typically use the method of putting down the polish and then top coating it (I don't like losing the opacity). But also, I do a lot of art in acrylic paint and the transformer does a really good job of protecting the art (a regular lacquer nail polish can melt the acrylic paint and/or smear it). But I will say, even with the transformer, I typically paint the base color at night and wait till the next day to top coat because once there is gel on top the base lacquer will not dry any further (which is why you get the rippling).
I can recommend that multichromes and all the Unicorn Skin toppers. Both are available as package on the Holo Taco website and it works out a bit cheaper to get each set than all the bottles individually. Frost Light also is a lovely polish. I've been using nail polish since the mid 1980s so have tried several different brands over the years. I've never had acrylics/gel nails though, but out of them all so far I think Holo Taco have honestly been the best. They wear well if they are applied over a base coat and under a top coat (I've also tried them with no top coat and over a peeling base - this makes them more susceptible to chips and cracks). I really enjoyed watching what you did with this set and how it worked with Holo Taco products.
Yeah I’ve used regular gel top coat mixed with regular polish and it normally works pretty good. Some polish won’t mix well though, I feel like chrome pigmented polish did not really dry correctly and it was probably not diluted exactly right.
This is awesome. I’m a person that uses both regular polish and gel polish. I use regular polish on my toenails. I use gel on my hands. I love dual polish sets.
I've used gel topcoat mixed w normal nail polish and i've tried it w all the polishes i have and it works every time! i would say the kit you tried is worth purchasing if you don't have a lamp, primer, etc. but otherwise buying gel topcoat is just as reliable!
Sensationail was my OG gel polish system! Their one step "express gel" is amazing tbh. One coat, full coverage, non wipe, and inexpensive. I still go back to it to this day and own the full colour range. 10/10
the sensationail gel kit was my first ever kit and was what made me start liking using gel polish. all of their products are high quality and have never failed me. if you look through my nail storage, you’ll literally just see a bunch of random gel polishes and top coats of theirs floating around from old kits 😂
I’ve mixed non wipe gel polish top coat with regular nail polish before and it also worked completely fine! I didn’t use any ratios just winged it. Definitely sheered out the color but I was expecting that since you’re mixing clear with color. I got a nice jelly color out of it tho!
honestly i've had a pretty easy time just top coating regular polish without mixing it or anything. I do polygel, and then go over it with polish and then top coat it and it hasn't given me any issues so far. I prefer thinner polishes so that might have something to do with it!
I've never tried mixing the polish and top coat but I've tried polish and then a gel top coat. Like you mentioned it gets ripples unless you let it dry completely
I’ve been using Holo Taco and just mixing equal parts of clear gel top coat and whatever regular HT polish color I’m wanting to use. Cures just like normal gel polish would and lasts just as long.
Emily! You should try posting UA-cam shorts, your channel is amazing but when I started posting shorts I grew A LOT. I love you so much and the nails look great 💗
Wow I would have never thought of doing this! I love Holo Taco but only do it for pedicures cuz I can't wait for it to dry ~ I'm gonna try next time I do my nails!
RIGHT ON! I have so many freaking polishes that have not gone bad and I don't use them. I was going to throw them away. Now I'm going to buy a lot of top coat and mix them!
I have had success with just mixing polish with a gel top coat. Tried it due to not finding a gel lime green for last Halloween, but did in a cheap polish set.
Oh my gosh that's so exciting! Thank you for your experiment, I have so many cute regular nail polishes but now I can use them like gel ones, I will have to test them all to be sure but this was super helpful
I have used gel top coat over regular nail polish before when I couldn't afford gels in all the colors I wanted, and oddly enough the more expensive the nail polish the less well it did with gel top coat. If you want to put gel top coat over nail polish I'd honestly recommend dollar store nail polish. Something about "cheap" nail polish makes it dry soooo fast and secure to tips/press ons. I have had sets of nails with dollar store nail polish as the base last me wayyy longer than I would care to have the same set on. On the other hand, the 5 different nail polish colors that I have that are something you'd get from a Sally's crinkled or lumped up after the top coat even after letting them dry overnight. I don't think you can avoid that for certain nail polish brands but the cheap ones from dollar stores have no problem!
I ALWAYS use a gel base coat, regular polish, and gel top coat. Never had an issue. I just wait about 15 mins before using the top coat. My nails last til I take them off and I'm super rough with my hands.
There's so many polishes that I've put to the side because they dry wayyy too slowly! Now I can probably use any polish and mix it with top coat! Thanks for the video :)!
if you just mix gel topcoat with normal polish it works perfectly, i usually do that straight on the nail coming with the topcoat while the polish is still 100% wet
I've been wanting to get into gel/polygel because I don't wear regular nail polish anymore on my hands due to how much time it takes and how horribly it lasts on me max 3 days but have a huge collection of polishes...might go buy this kit since it would be cheaper than the products I had in my Amazon cart based off the previous video of what beginners should get....at least for now and just to try and use it with my regular polish...excited now!
I got the Sensations starter kit a few years ago and often use it (only gel stuff I have) cause it and its polishes are at my local walmart and for a good price. I know it's not perfect but still love it. Also most of the time when I paint my nails with regular polish I use the gel top coat cause it looks so much nicer and lasts longer. Didn't know that wasn't something you're suppose to do or isn't suppose to work well easily 😅
This was really cool thank you so much Emily for trying this out for ~science~!

That's pretty cool. I may get this in the future when I feel like using gels cuz I have over 1000 polishes and would never want to abandon them
Ohhhhh this is EXCELLENT news! I have so many regular polishes in gorgeous colors (HT linear holos for one!), but my body chemistry basically requires gel if I want more than 3 days with my mani. You've changed my life!
About 2 years ago , when trying some nail art. I mixed nail polish & clear gel . It helps so the polish doesn’t dry and you get the colour you need.
I always mix gel top coat mixed with polish and works, also lasts as the regular gel would do
Been in "a mood" and just watching your vids 24 hours pretty much. Relatable.
Hope everything’s okay 💞
@@EmilySusanah Your content is helping. Not from this vid but I want all the glitter from the combo vid. Wow.
That blue is such a pretty colour 💙
I got a sensationail gel polish starter kit in 2012 and the lamp is the same and its still working great, so I totally agree on the quality.
Hey this was my first lamp! Similar set but mine also had 2 itty bitty color gels and a 2 in 1 top and base coat. I ended up using the two in one for topcoating my swatch sticks, and never actually used the polish to gel thing off it. Was good for a beginner but I'm upgrading now to a larger lamp with buttons and a timer dispay
oh im so excited about this!! i had no idea this was a thing! i cannot use regular nail polish, it chips within in a day no matter how much I prep my nail. gel polish was a complete game changer for me, however I still love holo taco and have a bunch of regular polish that I don't really use. if I wanted to use my holo taco I would sandwich it between gel polish but I would have to wait hours, sometimes I just let them dry overnight and do the top coat in the morning. definalty going to be trying the mixture of top coat and regular polish next time I do my nails!! love this video!

ive used older gel topcoats with my nail polishes. the transparent color payoff you get makes doing stone nails easy.
You can do this using any clear gel. I use gel base coat and mix 50/50 with regular polish and it works just as good as these kinds of kits

I've been using normal nail polish with a gel top coat for a while now and it works perfectly well. Especially the glitter nail polishes

I’ve been doing this for a while with regular gel top coat. It’s amazing!
Cool trick I would def use a top coat with sticky layer so you get the best adhesion.
Yeah I’ve used regular gel top coat mixed with regular polish and it normally works pretty good. Some polish won’t mix well though, I feel like chrome pigmented polish did not really dry correctly and it was probably not diluted exactly right.
So cool to know I can mix the two! Opened up some options for me. And loveee holo taco!
I love sensational products, its amazing, their gel is so good for someone who just uses it at home!
I mix regular polish with polygel... works great!
Sensationail was my OG gel polish system! Their one step "express gel" is amazing tbh. One coat, full coverage, non wipe, and inexpensive. I still go back to it to this day and own the full colour range. 10/10
Omg, I’m gonna have to try this. I love holo taco but I use gel more because if I’m in a rush gel is way quicker
I’ve been mixing my different colored gels into new colors for a while now. Never thought to try this!
the sensationail gel kit was my first ever kit and was what made me start liking using gel polish. all of their products are high quality and have never failed me. if you look through my nail storage, you’ll literally just see a bunch of random gel polishes and top coats of theirs floating around from old kits 😂
Wow. There are so many beautiful, gorgeous, fantastic handmade indie polishes you could try this with- I like🙂
I’ve mixed non wipe gel polish top coat with regular nail polish before and it also worked completely fine! I didn’t use any ratios just winged it. Definitely sheered out the color but I was expecting that since you’re mixing clear with color. I got a nice jelly color out of it tho!

Awesome Emily!! I'm impressed. Thank you for experimenting and sharing the results. 🥰❤
I‘m living for this dark blue jelly polish😍🤩
honestly i've had a pretty easy time just top coating regular polish without mixing it or anything.
My mind is blown right now - I never thought mixing gel with normal nail polish would work 🤯🤯 I'm so excited haha
This video changed my entire existence with nail art because o love Holo Taco polish and have a great many but I hate the drying time!
I'm a Yankee girl and omg I need to do this! I actually like the sheerness, and yes we need some Holo Taco gel polish! 💙💙💙

This made me so excited to try with top coat! I have sooo many nail polishes that I haven't used since I started with gel.

Holo Taco is my favorite nail polish brand 😻😻😻
