Oh Deer, Thats A Long Train!

  • Heading home from visiting family one Sunday afternoon, I decided to take a detour though the pass. I often do when I am alone. It is always a great way to relax, clear my head, watch a few trains and sometimes I even get a little bit of adventure action in... This afternoon did not disappoint, I encountered the deer, the puddle, the rattle snake (different video Link below) and in a future video, a hive of bees up at the summit! Not to mention many awesome trains.
    The first train you see is in this video is a long East bound BNSF double stacker that seems to go on forever! It was that perfect time of day when the sun hits the train just right, and the light seems to make the train radiantly glow. It also makes the colorful art look that much more amazing, if you're into that sort of thing. Do you remember "Charlie Brown and the Great Pumpkin", movie from when you were a kid? (5:00)
    The second train is a short but sweet BNSF manifest train. I enjoy manifest trains the most. The combination of rusty and shiny rolling stock from autoracks to boxcars and everything in between. The same goes for the art that the writer's and rail riders leave behind. Bright and brilliant colorful works, faded pieces that have weathered though time and when you look even closer, pay more attention, the monikers with poignant little messages and doodles that spark the curiosity from all that are lucky enough to see them pass by. The art and the cars come together to tell the stories of the unforgiving passage of time on the rails. It never gets old.
    Sadly, the deer did not make it off of the tracks. It happened in an area that the deer really had nowhere to go, there is a good chance that the train caught it off guard. It either panicked or froze from the train's lights and unfortunately succumbed to the train. When there is somebody or something on the tracks, there is not much the Engineer can do except honk the train's horn and hope whatever it is headed towards gets off the tracks. I have heard/read stories of train crews that are traumatized by some of the unfortunate accidents that sometimes occur.
    The puddle of water was sort of a dud, I was hoping it was gonna be deeper! Oh well, it was still fun to run the Fake Jeep though it anyway. I hope that you enjoyed this one! Nice catches dad i think you are right about the deer. The term "deer in the headlights" is used because deer's eyes are designed for low light so they can see very well at night in the dark. So when headlights, either from a car or in this case a +400.000 lbs. locomotive hits the deer's eyes it takes a few moments to adjust and the deer won't move because it doesn't no where to run to. So. if I may play forensic investigator here i think the deer encountered a west bound train and was hit head on you can see its broken front leg ahead of it on the track it went down and under the train quickly because the body isn't far away from the leg. OR.... it was killed elsewhere and dumped on the tracks to cover up the original crime now i have gotten too CSI (not funny i know).

      @CalebA-sv2kw a great assessment of what more than likely occurred. Total bummer for the deer, I am sure that the train crew was pretty bummed out too I'd bet. I never even considered the fact that maybe it could have been dumped on the tracks! That's totally plausible. 🤔 Thank you Caleb!

    Ahh the circle of life the freight train is feeding the yotes the weekend!
    Great work brother the lighting was perfect here on this 2 in 1 double stack manifest and tanker freight
    The second one after the puddle cruise was one of the shortest trains in the pass it looked like!

    • @FJDad777
      @FJDad777  Місяць тому +1

      @STACKSY yup circle of life. Trains get hungry too. Definitely one of the shorter trains to come through. Even more rare that it was a BNSF manifest. The manifest trains that usually come through are UP. BNSF moves a ton of stackers through here.

    I think I saw some flat cars in the beginning giving you the bird.
    Always fun to find some water to drive through! Nice job! I have been known to go out of my way yo drive through water. Fun is where you make it!
    Some of those tank cars are mighty rusty or maybe corroded from their contents.
    Nice railroad 🛤️ capture brother! 👍🏻

      @Fourwheeljive I was wondering the same about the tankers, must be some caustic chems in them. Yeah, the "birds" are from a writer (artist) that goes by the name LAST. He seems to be mad at something. 🤣🤣 Totally agree bro! Fjun is we're you make it! 🎯 and yup, you just confirmed we are like blood bros man. 🤣 If there is water I am gonna see if the Fake Jeep will float. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Thank you so much for your support Robert, I appreciate you very much my friend.

    Perfect lighting my friend, another awesome one 👍🏼!! About the deer, I agree with one of the comments. It could be a clever cover up for a another murder committed up or downline 🤣. But seriously, it is traumatic for the train crew when they hit a car/truck and especially with kids involved. Or the obvious suicide. The crew can request relief from running the train and wait for a relief crew. Crew can take 3 days off and counseling if needed.

    • @FJDad777
      @FJDad777  Місяць тому +2

      @P30CH now I am starting to think it was planted there! 🦌 🤔🤣and back to serious... I am trying to put myself in the shoes of a crew in that situation, 3 days would not be enough . That would be very hard to deal with. Thank you for that info Eugene, I pray that your trips were all uneventful in such ways.

      Engineer friends of mine told me that every run there would be near misses. It's a call the engineer has to make, whether they will get out of the way or not. If they "plug" the train (emergency application of all train brakes) there is a big risk of train truck damage with flat wheels, blown cylinders etc... plus the time to recharge the train with air 15-30 min.
      I was riding the cab of a northbound San Diego-LA train doing 80 MPH thru Carlsbad. Over the rise there was a bicyclist with his bike on his shoulder walking the rails same direction as the train. Engineer just laid on that horn. Kid must have earphones on because he would not get out of the way. Engineer plugged the train. The last second the kid looks back dives off. The tracks are on a rise there so the kid took a mean tumble with his bike. Finally got the train stopped and the conductor took a walk to find the kid. EMS was called. Not sure how bad he was hurt. 🚴🏼🚂

      @FJDad777  Місяць тому

      @P30CH Wow! I did not realize near misses would be that frequent. It's probably because sadly, most lack enough common sense to stay at a safe distance. I would say that if that kid survived, even if he was injured, he was damn lucky. Thank you so much for sharing some of your amazing stories from the rails with me today brother. It means a ton to me. I love to sit and listen/read this kind of stuff, I could listen for hours. I appreciate you my friend.
