HEALTH on Heavy-Music Roots, Exploring Aggressive New Direction on 'SLAVES OF FEAR'

- HEALTH’s new album 'Vol 4 :: SLAVES OF FEAR' is full of sonic distortion and mechanical drive, showing the band’s knowledge around both synthesizers and guitars. Their electronic-assisted heaviness contributes to their definition of hard rock, born from their beginnings listening to classic rock and mutating to what it is now. “We have a lifelong obsession with heavy music,” says Jake Duszik. “Say you’re really into Sabbath. That shit’s been done, and it’s been done really well. So we wanted to figure out how to have our own avenue of having something to contribute that’s [a] novel way to communicate music that’s aggressive.” See the band discuss their deep connection to heavy music, the winding road that led to their “darker, heavier" new record and why they want to add more “dog” to their music.
"It's like there's a hard rock band playing in a shitty club in a movie from the 90s about the future, that's our band"
And that's exactly why i like them so much!
Same
I always picture "The Message" being plaued during a scene of the main character trying to get away from body gaurds of his father and during this song, one of the friends of the main character points out that one of the bodygaurds is hiding by the bar and then the main character goes to the body guard and tells him to leave him and his friemds alone and then a hitman comes and starts a gun fight and this band just keeps playing (like in From Dusk Til Dawn) as a shootout is going on
Holy shit John is an absolute unit
Glad the band went for "more dog." I love this album.
HEALTH is my favorite band of all time, their music is helping me overcome my addiction to heroin
Love these guys...
DOG MODE ON!
Thanks HEALTH from bestowing upon us 'Vol. 4: Slaves of Fear'. Pulling together after Jupiter Keyes left for a project that isn't that good to begin with, but it is his call in the end(he could have still be in both). Though this sounds slightly less textured than 'Death Magic', I hope your forthcoming masterwork will be 'dogger' on all fields, get more metal in your sound, with your tailored sound tools nevertheless!
So, thank you, HEALTH: Jake Duzsik, John Famiglietti, Benjamin Jared Miller (in any order) for your awesome soundscape!
3:41 great description LOL
I would describe the sound as slowed down “electronic body music” being translated by a really good heavy metal band in a super dark dirty bar...
I fucking dig their music sooo much. It's synthwave, it's post punk but it is fucking HEAVY. So I get what they're saying, that's probably why I am a huge fan of theirs.
More dog.
DOG LEVELS APPROACHING 9000
" it's like...we have the technology.... We can get a lot of fucking dog" ...haha they are so amazing!
Great interview, so awesome to hear you discuss your ideas and opinions on your music style and the work you all have done. Would love to see more of this in the future
Can't believe I'm just seeing this interview now, but I'm glad because I never know how to describe their music 😂 They definitely have been achieving their goal, saw them last spring and it was a blast, it's like hard dance music for depressed punks and visceral is a great descriptor
Slaves Of Fear needs a remix with Tha Dogg Pound. You guys are awesome!
Thanks for creating original heavy music without the need of fitting in a genre.
Word!
Blew out some of the speakers in my car today 😂😂😂 Trust me, your music has plenty dog (At least as far as my car is concerned).
🔊🐕💨
Love it! Great interview!
We need the dog machine. Now.
" it's like...we have the technology.... We can get a lot of fucking dog"
I whole hearted love this band
These guys are awesome haha
What dorks. I like them.
"I'll show you what these guys missed, I got something to add" LOL
disco4 is my vote for best album of last 5 years across all genres
F these guys are awesome! Saw them a few times now and I do miss the early 4 piece days, but seeing what they've evolved too is amazing too.
So good
i spaced out for a bit and when i came back i heard them talking about dogs and i was in utter confusion
John is rolling on something here lol
THATS A GOOD EXPLANATION THO.
JESUS JAKE LET HIM TALK
Sometimes it's more metal to be a hard rock band than an actual metal band.
I have such an awful time trying to come up with how to describe their sound to someone and now I think I got it.
Because HEALTH's music is so unique, so revolutionary and so different from everything else I propose a new genre to be created
Dog metal (or eventually: electronic dog metal)
HEALTH is an e-dog metal band
james and the giant peach up n here
YEAH CATHARTIC HARD ROCK
I would totally buy a dog machine!
3:41 Apt description!
Best description of the band I've ever heard. Bar none.
These guys need to do more game soundtracks, please tell em your working on Max Payne 4 or Grand Theft Auto 6
Major Crimes from cyberpunk 2077 is how I got into their music, how I discovered them.
It's just so unique, so climatic, the vibe it has... It's perfect
It just has so much dog
give me the dog instrument !!!!
Interview needed more dog.
the funny thing is the next album has so much more dog, so they really are still finding new ways to innovate and push the dog envelope.
5 minutes of saying more dog. LMFAO these guys
They we're killing me with that. Could not stop laughing!
MORE DOG
Charlie Kelly is the frontman of a band....
It’s computer metal
Electronic maybe
