did you know that beer might have been the first witches brew? Apparently, women used to brew it, and if it ended up bad, either they were blamed, or some demonic source was. they also usually had cats to keep mice away from the brewing materials, big cauldrons to brew with, wooden poles to stir with that had herbs on the end for displays during festivals, and large, tall black hats that were sort of like top hats. There's that little piece of information that probably no one needed! :P

I recall a time when my mother stole my sketchbook from my room to show my adult brother, and I was so mortified that when I was alone I tore out every single page, which not only had characters but full fantasy backgrounds and question marks I hid in the details. I was still in elementary school; she was so angry when she found out I trashed all of it. I regret it to this day.
Savannah Butler I just had a bad time in life and I was through with everything so I ripped up all my artwork and I just trashed a lot of my belongings. The only thing I regret destroying is my artwork though.
I understand she didn't think you should have trashed your art, but she never should have shown anyone your sketchbook, without permission. I'm an artist, and a writer, so I have sketchbooks, and notebooks, and I get so mad when someone looks at them, without asking. These are extremely personal things to creators.
Why on earth did she take it from your room like that? That sounds really upsetting...
It was never her business to show or go through your art anyway. I think she should have been more aware of the possible outcomes of that situation, like *embarrassment and disaster,* before she decided to do something so selfish and ignorant.
Makes sense. I can hardly stand to open my sketchbook in public for fear that people will get a glimpse of the murder scenes lol

When I was first making OCs I gave all of them two different color eyes. I thought it would make them look unique.
It would, if I didn’t have like twenty girls with different colored eyes in my sketchbook. I stopped once my friend pointed it out.
Then my fifth grade teacher was an old woman with one blue and one brown eye, and she was hella mean. I liked to think that my old drawings came back to haunt me.

I recently created a redesign of a drawing I made a looong time ago. It was a woman with like a square shaped fish tank on her head walking through a tundra..I never knew why I drew it but it was a cool Idea and looking back on it now, it looks way better than before. So yeah, never through away your old art, because you may of had a really cool idea you liked and couldn't draw it quite well but you can now!

You should make her a character for your current comic. I know you already have your comic idea laid out, but she could be a non important side character that wouldn't change the story. I think it'd be cool to add your first oc into your current work, and it would fit since she is a witch.

I know its dumb to ask because you kinda addressed it in this video..but could you do a video on how to..add personality and character to drawings.I try poses and facial expressions and my work just seems to..lack charm and stuff.

Tell a story with the character.
Try to change perspective and use colors, that underline the emotions/atmosphere.
I don't do a lot with facial expressions...but I've been trying to pose my characters. And they look robotic no matter what...

Did y'all know that stereotypical witches are based after old timey beer maker women? they wore hats so that people would know that they were beer makers at market and they used brooms over their doors to mark their breweries.

My first oc was a warrior cat named solarpelt. When I first designed her she was very edgy and her name was Bloodstar lmao I kept her backstory but she used to be all black with scars but apparently I didn’t know scars healed so she just had this big scar across her eye :/ but now she’s mostly black with white spots on the legs and tail with hazel-brownish eyes and a very faint scar and I’m happy with her now :)
Could you do something Animal Crossing themed?? Maybe redesigning your favorite animals as humas?? Love your art ^>^

Your first OC was actually pretty cool, mine was like... the beginning of romeo and Juliet but then time skips and shifts into a growing love/rebuilding story. It was just weird man.

I really wish I had a unique cartoon style. Instead, I have a average anime style.
Well you could try to look at cartoon styles you like and draw those or you can mix the two together.
You can still change your style
If you want to change your style, that's fine. But anime requires a lot of talent, and I'm sure you're great at it. :-)
no style can be average, there all unique! im sure yours is great, but if you do want to have a cartoon style, you can always still learn
You can always try to tweek it! I was stuck with an overly cartoony and simplistic style which I liked but wasn’t very flexible, but I tweeked it enough to a new artsyle I’m pretty proud (It’s far from great but in my opinion its a pretty big improvement), In my opinion that type of thinking can be both degrading and dehumanizing, you can always change the artsyle, and all styles are accepted, especially if you are still geowing as an artists, which is just about everyone

Teamutt - Expressions would be a very important tutorial because you need your characters to show their personalities, so that's a good idea of you to come up with the expression idea.

Lil' Lavender don't have a problem with shading all that much. But just figuring out the color is super hard 'cause i have very vibrant colored markers and I can't really make relaxing drawings

PLEASE never throw away your art. I was such a perfectionist that when my family was confused about what I was trying to portray, I literally would just throw it away. I was do creative and now I'll never be able to see what I came up with because it's forever gone.
About keeping old art, that’s something I emphasize when I meet new artists because I didn’t keep most of my old art and that is a mistake I still regret. A while ago I found a self-portrait in a old diary of mine from when I was nine years old and instead of throwing it away I cut it out and taped it into my sketchbook. Hell, I might treasure old art more than the art I make now. It’s just a reminder to be proud of your art, no matter how bad you think it is, because you improved and that’s what matters.

I think that it's amazing how you engage with your old art and show your progress in art and design. A lot of people I know want to shun their older work and their "Deviantart days" completely, and I think that's a shame. Everyone makes mistakes when they start out, but that's part of the journey. It seems pointless to ignore what got you into art in the first place. I also think that this comparative style is very effective for teaching the way you do. Thank you for producing such excellent videos and wonderful art. :)

When someone shows me their drawing, I always see something good even if its their first drawing, so I usually say positive things, because if we only talk about the bad things, they will never want to improve their drawings.
Your use of light green, pink and blue are really amazing in the new drawing because they work so very well together, even though all of them are bright. I know if I tried using those colors it would just look too bright and the colors would fight each other

Dear lavender, you've shown me that my art style doesn't have to be overly detailed to be good. You've helped me create my art style and I don't worry about the details/ if it looks good enough without detailing. I've tried to work on my movement and flow in my art and your art is definitely something I look up to. My art style isn't as round as yours, but the personality and the color are things that I love about your art. i always keep my old art, and i love looking at it, like the drawings i made when i was 12-13, even if there's a lot of mistakes i remember trully enjoying doing it, never judging it badly, i was always happy to draw and to create and that's a state of mind artists tend to lose when growing up, when art become more than just a hobby and we study it more / make money with it. Children/young teens are so carefree with what they create and that's awesome! I wish one day i will create like this again ~

I think you changed her look a bit too much. The end result looks great, but i wish her style and hair had looked a bit more similar to the older drawing. Still a really pretty redraw tho!
The reason why she did that was because she couldn't portray what she wanted the old drawing a look like so she poured all of them in this new drawing
I have this really old drawing from like, 2011 that I redraw every once in a while to track my progress. It gets changed a lot but what I always keep are the most obvious details like the white hair, pink dress, gold crown, and even the yellow skin. It's a really fun way to track both my progress and changes in my overall art style.
I'm loving all the character design videos coming from you! It's really interesting to watch, as I'm aiming to be a character designer/ concept artist. These videos give me a little peek into the world of character design. Keep it up!

Could you make a video on getting your art recognized? I work my friggin ass off and try to make good art every day and post it to my twitter but no matter how much i try, how many hashtags i tag, i bairly get any recognition. It's honastly very discouraging and sometimes makes me think i should just give up
You should maybe find a website that includes “featuring” and post it there. When they include featuring it will help you get noticed. (Hope that made sense)
Like the other one said, amino is a good place, where you can get featured.
But your first focus shouldn't be just to get attention from others, that will make you depressed and stuff.
Also you can do collaborations, art trades and stuff, so other artists mention you in their work and you mention(?) Them in your work.
Win, win situation.
You also can ask questions in your tweets, where people can interact.
Also be the one, who comment on peoples work, interact with your followers, or little people you follow. They will be happy and are more willing to comment on your stuff.

Or you just have art,that is more for art people, not for everyone. These people barely get recognised by many people, and don't get attention that they deserve.
Sometimes being recognized takes a long time. You shouldn't try to push it. If you like drawing keep doing it because you like it. If you only want to be popular, then stop. Most people will appreciate you more as an artist if you're passionate about your drawings.
Twitters a harder platform for art to get recognized make a Deviant Art account and fav other peoples work regularly and you will get some attention but don't fave too much or you'll get overwhelmed with notifications.
If you have other social media you could maybe post a link to your art on twitter telling your followers to go check out your art. At least that's what I do with my art and writing

I haven't been watching you very long, but you have quickly become my favourite UA-camr. I love you art videos: the only two art UA-camrs I can watch drawing or doing anything art related is you and AppleMinte. Your videos are so awesome, and I can tell I'll be a long time fan. You've also inspired me to draw more, and made me want to go to art school. Thank you for being an amazing person.

Did you know that the original witches were actually brewers?
- The hat was used to be very distinctive when they were at markets so that everyone knew, “hey there's the alcohol, nice”
- The cat was known for chasing away mice that got into the wheat
- The image of standing over a cauldron is actually them stirring the beer!

For some reason, it reminded me of Kirito's sister from sword art online, when they were trying to break Asuna rom that prison inside of that fairy game, Alfniem online?
@LavenderTowne you're such a big inspiration to me and inspire me to draw! I noticed my drawings even started to have a few resemblances to yours, such as big eyes and less defined nose- you really helped me improve my skills, and even taught me how to make better characters! (I even made a desert cat heavily inspired by the one you made in your character design video, it's on my deviant art, @MiaChanz)
