There are so many cringe inducing character designs in my past you don't even know. D: I always worry with this style of video that it comes of like I'm making fun of others but rest assured, I am only making fun of myself. ;w;

Eyes that are two different colors can be good if they aren’t overdone.
Especially on animal characters where it's biologically possible, it just makes more sense. And I agree with you. Having every OC with heterochromia is too much.
not a werewolf what? No that looks fine, I mean its good if it's only on a couple of your Oc's.
Absolutely! But, having everything in the character on the right makes for a distracting. And she needs a story.
Like piko
@@rosepuff8908 hey! I have one blue and one green eye! I take offense to that lol jk. But it is biological possible for a human to have that tho, it's just uncommon\kinda rare
Pet peeve that is actually used in actual anime and games....
Weak armoer=covers a good amount of the body. Stable and strong against weaponry
Strong super armor= covers only breasts and groin everything else is unprotected leaving the character extreamely vulnerable
WHAT IS THIS LOGIC?!?!
The less you wear, the more badass you obviously are.
Real-life example of this trope: ua-cam.com/video/dfz4Eiz5cDg/v-deo.html
Chassie Bazz
yeah, if they wanted it to be even hotter they could make the armour cover everything BUT their breasts and genitals. that wouldn’t be horrible at all.
btw, i totally agree with you. why does everything have to be pretty??
I prefer practicality over fashion
Honestly if you take the anime character, Momo Yaoyorozu from Boku No Hero Academia, armor like this can be very useful. Momo has a power called “creation” (she can create objects as long as she knows how they’re made) and her costume is very revealing in order to help her create bigger objects since said items are sort of popped out of her skin. Sorry if that was confusing, I’m a terrible writer, but otherwise you’re absolutely right. Characters should not have revealing costumes/armor unless it benefits them in some way.
Corrupted Eclipse now that’s practicality and fashion
One of my OC's has an eye patch, I got inspired to draw her when a fly flew into my eye
Lol. Yah, some of my friends and my friends characters have mismatched eyes or an eye patch. Only two actually. They aren't bad but it's not realistic to have everyone have an eye patch or mis matched eyes. But I know two people with mismatched eyes in real life.
Lmao
Wait when has Gerard ever made that face he's making in your profile pic I love it
best inspiration 😂😂 i love it!!
Omg Gerard
one time i got bored so i made an oc based off burnt ramen noodles
that morning i almost burned down my house because i forgot to put water in my ramen
I'll probably go back now and try to re-design the oc to fit better with an "oh darn my house burned down and I almost died" vibe
One time I was boiling water to cook ramen noodles but I got distracted and the water all evaporates...
Lee Rae Rin 😂😂😂😂
My little brother did that with those 'make-your-own-Mac-N-Cheese-cups' once. It was bad!
Someone I know did the same thing but with Mac and cheese
I did that with rice o roni. Needless to say I broke the microwave...
Send this to everyone on DeviantArt right now lol

The first "ocs" i ever made was when i was in 1st grade. They were two rabbits named jake and sarah and they were my only friends. I called them characters because i refused to call them imaginary. My childhood was sad lol
that sounds a lot like what i did! my stuffed animals hoppers and noodles are now two of my most beloved children, asher and sam (asher is actually my pfp at the time of writing this comment)
My first oc was, uhh, stupid. I made her when I was like 4. I don't wanna talk about it 😓😅
Ohh , it actually sounds really sad :(( i hope u okay
My first drawing friend was a Nazi called Rithel who apparently survived WW2
faith destiny what a mood
I actually have a self insert Mary Sue character with a design I chose purely because I like it, but I use her as a coping method so I can write about her when I have a bad day. I find it fun to just imagine myself being super powerful, neurotypical and able to cope with anything.
i feel we all have *that* coping oc
There are people like you, and len there are people like the gacha tubers in the cringe gacha compilations
@@flytrap__3409 i mean as long as they're happy i don't see a problem
Same. My oc has weaknesses but I also sometimes act like they are a Mary Sue and it makes me happy when I’m not
I relate to this so damn much-
Here’s some tips for people with characters that wear uniforms :
Story -
- different “rankings” would have clothing suited to that “rank” ( e.g. members in a big cooking club could have typical uniform aprons vs smaller tight-knit groups could have their own custom clothing and aprons )
- consider fabrics and cost. as mentioned in the video, some things may not be accessible to others by location and wealth. so maybe people with less wealth can’t get newer uniforms due to cost so they reuse hand-me-downs
- some people might’ve got the wrong size for their uniform. this is in more of a story perspective if you’re trying to introduce more characters. So for example, a new student might’ve gotten a uniform that was meant to be for someone else and they go to return it or something
Personality -
- think about their personality and how will they wear it to show that. Rebels, charismaniacs, and council members all have varying moods to them and will probably wear uniforms that match with that theme. some people maybe won’t even wear certain pieces of their uniform if they’re inconvenienced ( e.g. if they have a shirt and a jacket, they might just wear only the shirt )
- people with tight schedules might wear things more messily / people with lots of time or have others to help them will wear their uniforms very neatly and tidy.
- consider if the place allows usage of different uniforms ( over three main designs is overkill ) with maybe some different colours that still match the other variations. this can also includes adding different pieces to their uniform like light cardigans or different socks to the norm
** You can also take note of a few of these if you’re making a sort of school/camp series.
Edits : changed layout so it’s easier ( ? ) to read, grammar mistakes fixed
Thank you!!!! (ノ*>∀
This is actually pretty useful for a character I’m making! Thank uu :]
You can also make the uniform look wet, it’ll stand out
the comic i'm trying to draw isnt really situated in a school but these advices were still very usefull to me
This is amazing! Thank you!!!
you can get away with the eye patch thing, if you do it carefully and subtly. in fact that goes for most features of a character. you can make a character thats prEttY EdgY without looking cringy. sublty is key.
basically if you what to make an edgy character, think of what you want. if its anything near the "bad" oc in the video, then think about what lavender towne said. and color is a major thing. test different color combinations and see what looks good. try not to use fully saturated colors.
Eyepatches work really well if they have a reason behind them (eye injury, or hiding a 'special' eye) Edgy over the top designs can work, as long as it matches with the plot & charcter (for example almost every character in kill la kill looks weird but it matches their personality, also jojo's bizarre adventure has alot of weird looking folk)
Leiran Zonneveld or Ciel
Look at Ana Amari, solid proof that eyepatches can work it pulled off right
Alolan Poochyena Snake too. Both got shot in the right eye by foreigners, lol
my friend and I used to write stories together in Middle school, me being the writer and her being the illustrator. We would collaborate together with the plot events and character design and we ended up with a girl wearing a business suit with a few cosplay elements like cat knee highs and a cape because she was the CEO of a "super business corporation" but she had an extreme love of anime and manga. Her struggle was keeping it a secret while also trying to do business stuff. Looking at this video and how we designed the character I had a good nostalgic laugh.
That actually sounds like an amazing design haha I really want to see that!
Event Horizon IKR! I was also doing an story with a friend when we were children, but we were both writers and illustrators, one did a chapter and the other one illustrate it, it was a funny mess. Our history was about two teenage girls being the dictators of an empire, in an island hidden in the Bermuda's triangle. My friends OC had long pink hair in a ponytail, red eyes and wore a tiara, tank top, mini skirt, tall boots and a cape.
My OC was brunette, blue eyes, with a curl hetalia like, long hair until her knees and with a mix of different american natives thinga for clothes and walked on naked feet, and she had a whip for torture people... And they didn't even had names, we just called them by our "internet nicknames".
Just a few weeks before we found my sketch book with all the info, decided to make a big remake to the history, I'm still thinking how to make my OC (who's supposed to be a magician, but she's a human) more likable and real. Maybe I had her personality but I still don't know how to put it on paper.
So watching this video was so accurate, my oc had a lot of things in her body just because, it wasn't logical. At least I cut her hair a bit (to her hips), gave her a name (Itzia, means princess in the Maya culture) and has two natives tattoos in her body, they are small so they don't charge the design a lot.
Reading this comic and watching the video gave me so many memories :)
Btw, your history and character sound pretty cool.

Lavender Towne has a comic with witches in it. It's called "Unfamiliar"
It's even worse when they make the OC in Gacha Life and just throw on whatever without thought.
I mean sometimes you just gotta though.

Would this actually work? probably not, theres no reason to have it
Can I add it anyway? yeah no one else has to see em or anything, go wear a tank top with multiple scarves and bandannas because nothing really matters in life.

Edit 2: There is a lot of confusion over 'hair over one of the eyes.' I simply saw it way too often and a small minority of artists used it as a crutch for a lack of symmetry.

The bad design she does in this video might work if the character is just an angsty teen that wants to look cool in her setting. It'd also be a hilarious thing if it completely backfires on the character causing them to look ridiculous and be made fun of. Then the said character could probably bounce of off this with even more angst and thinking that no one understands them. I could actually think of a lot for this kind of character.
Red5rainbow I never thought of that. XD
Yeah the problem I have with this video is the assumption that everyone just wears exactly what's perfect for their climate and w/o any thought into personal style lmao. I'm sure you could go ahead and make ur perfect scene naruto fox character and then just go and remove elements that would be painful to wear and it would still be ok. People these days wear sweaters with holes cut out and that doesn't make sense but they do it lol
w-
you know what would be really funny? throwing in one of those angsty guys in as a background character in a normal scene >:)
That'd probably work for a comedic comic but if u want a serious but a cool looking character it doesn't work but urs works goood
When I watch your videos, I feel like I'm in an actual art class learning and improving. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I recently redesigned a character, but now looking back I might need to re-redesign her adding a bit more meaning to what the character wears and how she carries herself.
Same here.
i just redesign my character everyday cause it looks boring.
same, my very first ever oc, I still draw her, shes my favorite, I redesigned her (and my art got wayy better ofc) and the universe she and my other ones r in(used to be a not well done superpower universe and they had multiple powers cuz one just i s n t enough), changed her name (used to be Ash and she had fire powers, real creative ik ;-:) and made her personality more relatable (before she was a loud, giant eyes tsundere) and I redesigned the love interest too, lets not talk about how cringe he used to be-
Baqaq
I love the fact that you actually show and explain how you fix the character instead of complaining about how awful it is and how it shouldn't exist and should just be scrapped altogether, too many people here do that. I wish we had more videos like this, it's a really wonderful and helpful video!
Natalie Miranda Maybe she made it black to absorb more heat, a secret message that her chest area is "hot"

Natalie Miranda yeah she’s more accepting then most art teachers that yell at you for making things that are bad in there eyes
I do appreciate videos like this but I'm glad that you're not like directly hating and telling young artists directly NOT to design like this
Let young artists draw how they want to draw and let them grow and learn, we all went through that shitty OC phase but like i hate when i see people directly BASH on it because it discourages young artists from drawing and it just sucks yknow?
Sure its cringy but its not the end of the world, btw love your art style!
Thank you! I definitely don't want to discourage young artists, there's nothing cringey about learning after all. I would only ever refer to my own art as cringey to be honest. I tried really hard to refer only to myself in a negative way. ;v;
but at the same time I see a lot of people "protecting" young artists from critique... when it's from critique that you can grow out from that fase. I don't even go and critique anything anymore because most young artists will bash me for HATING even when I'm totally polite and educational with my critique.
Meghan Mon I never had that phase tbh
MY OCS WERE SIMPLE AS SHIT AND MY FURSONA WAS LITERALLY JUST A GRAY CAT WITH BROWN EYES

All the way from UA-cam, damn!
something to remember: TONS of kids make ocs like the one on the right when they're just getting started drawing. they might be making lots of mistakes, but that's how new artists flex their creative skills!! so it's not appropriate (or very nice) to make fun of people who draw "cringy" ocs. they're probably just starting out and their designs will mature with time & practice! so be kind.
also: I imagine the two ocs in this video are girlfriends
I have no problem with Marysue characters (in RP settings though, godmodding is boring to RP with, so there it's not appropriate) I only think it's "cringy" when it has every color under the sun and is wearing every article of clothing. That to me looks more like the person couldn't decide what they wanted and just put everything they thought was cool onto one model.
I think the video is quite helpful for preventing that from happening or fixing it when it does. Cringy is kind of a mean term, but some people can't help it. You can still think mean things, but keep them to yourself. There is no point making fun of people, unless they are inviting you to laugh with them and what they considered silly drawings/ideas.
I think is important to teach people that make ocs like the one on the right how to make better ocs because if we always tell them there ocs good they'll never get better
She wasn’t really making fun of it just trying to give them tips
@@teateakira5971 I know, this comment is just something for people to keep in mind.

+Camdari-sama
A mary sue/gary stu is a character who is unrelatable or "a perfect person", if you will
Basically a poorly written OC
Mixane Seka. Yeah, true
Mixane Seka Lol, mine was the exact opposite. She was wayyy too unlikeable. She was sexist, annoying, had anger issues, and was just in general, a mean person. And she didn't get any character development. I made this story up with my friend and her character was like the perfect character. Kind, sweet, overpowered, and perfect. Just imagine how that story turned out with those two characters as the lead XD
Has anyone else never made an edgy OC?
The only one I made was a joke XD
Hooo boy, when I was 9 I had a black and red vulpix oc who was legit called 'Death', I still have old flipnotes of her to this day and I HECKIGN cringe everytime I'm reminded of her lmao, I kinda wanna revive her though
Colour Streak I made a vampire sonic when I was in middle school 😆
I love edgy characters XD I don't know why, I just love the design. In stories however...
i've never made a super edgy character either. even from a young age, i seemed to understand basic character design, color palettes, world building, etc.
on an unrelated note, i'm pretty sure i follow you on QuizUp??? idk
I think everyone has had an "edgy" OC when they were a kid and/or pre-teen, probably due to that person going though the emo/punk/scene phases.
Edgy characters can look good and have a decent story, but majority of the time they are all the same, family died in a fire, abused, is death itself.....something on those lines.
I still have an edgy OC, but at lest he isn't all black and red with a haircut that has bangs over one eye XD

shipping real people is weird and creepy, especially when they’re strangers. I can’t stop you from doing it, but I can advise you to not mention it in a person’s comment section as you could make them uncomfortable.
It’s by Kevin Macleod. He makes pretty much every song on UA-cam lmao.

I knew I wasn't the only one thinking the OCs by other artists are over done in design. I really don't wanna be mean to them but man there is a thing called Too Much. Like Makeup, it can be too much.
-Anonymous Being- I'm not saying little details, they can be fine and add more to the characters. I'm saying something like the size of Yugi Ridiculous hairstyle but 10 times that and it's all over the body. It's understandable to make your character stand out but having a regular bystander standing next to an OC with so many things on him to even ignore. That's too much.
Joseph Artsader yeah, I think that's a good thing to consider. Next to a normal person, how much do they stand out? Ans how much is too much?

LavenderTowne my main oc named pumpkin has one of those edgy eyes
but my oc miko is non edgy and she represents me irl
Okay, one way I like to build my OC's, which, granted, has more to do with the fact that I'm a writer, is that I give them a group of people they work with, or interact with. It keeps them from being overpowered by having someone they either rely on a lot, or occasionally rely on, as well as some sort of weakness which an enemy or something can exploit. Plus, if you add to much detail into one character, it dulls the rest down, so you have to make everyone balanced out. Even a character that doesn't have a team, or a partner interacts with someone regularly. I mean, yeah, they could be completely alone, but then, try thinking logically what that personality and character design would be like.
That's so true, both visually and personality wise if you design characters as a group it'll really help balance and develop the world!!! Excellent advice.
I usually design the main character in a world first, and then make sure nobodies colors or design in that world clash with that main character. For example, Scarlet, who is a brightly saturated red cat, commonly interacts with two other charachters, Xander, who is a desaturated indigo blue with a black paw, and Thomas, who is mostly brown and tan with green eyes and necktie. Both of them have colors that look good against her colors.
I always new that I couldn't put random neon colors, and would use colors within the same range. One of your main points was act as if these were real people. I gave her hair that went to her ankles. I gave her ugg boots. I gave her a thick coat, and leggings. *It was in May. IN FLORIDA* I changed her design so that she wouldn't overheat. Don't worry.
Galaxy Ski lol
I’m gonna add a side character to my story called Maria sue to reference Mary Sues. She’s gonna have all the don’ts and she won’t serve any purpose at all she just talks about her tragic backstory and how everyone is in love with her (they’re not)
that sounds hilarious
omg it would be extra funny if everyone else who interacted with her was just like “sure maria”
I made an entire family of Mary Sue tropes, ended up loving them so much that they became serious characters :')

ok since people keep seeing this.
if you draw digitally: don't be afraid to use copypaste & flip (edit: or mirror/symmetry tool). those features exist for a reason!
(edit to this: usually i mirror/copypaste the sketch, then do the lines without mirror/copypaste. also good for other times when you want things even but not 100% symmetrical!)
if you draw traditionally: sorry but idk how to help you :/ gl
another edit. i have wisdom from UA-cam user "Duck Is Lord". original comment available in the replies.
"If you draw traditionally, try drawing both eyes at the same time. (Example: draw the outline of one eye first, then the next instead of finishing one then doing the other.)
It won't automatically make your eyes identical, but it can help!"
ANOTHER edit! this time from UA-cam user "Whispence". original comment available in the replies.
"My method for getting same/similar looking eyes on paper takes a while, but can help.
Trace the original eye on a separate piece of paper, and then trace the eye from the piece of paper that you just traced on onto the original piece of paper where you wish to place the eye. (rotate it if necessary)"
@Sabrina Alcorn one day you'll get there... it took me two years but now the eyes look mostly similar sometimes 😌
I don't draw similar eyes and designed a whole family of cats with almost all of them with hair flipped over 1 eye. The shortest son, with hair flipped over his right eye. Middle sister, hair cut short. Father, hair flipped over left eye. Grandmother, hair cut short. Grandfather, hair flipped over right eye. (I'm lazy lol)

My OC has an eyepatch because his eye got stabbed out in a battle. Is that bad?
Scribbley Stuff I think that's fine, considering you have a solid reason for it.
Not at all! Actually, that is a completely possible reason for someone to wear an eyepatch. Especially in a battle themed environment.
At no point does she say these are bad traits, but that they don't tend to work well when just thrown together. Her point was that thought should be put into a character's design and that things like the wardrobe should be functional and reasonable. An eyepatch for someone missing an eye seems like both c:
baffledBITS Ah, thank you!
My OC's eye was blinded when she was struck by a sword. There's no eyepatch, and she can still open the eye, she just can't see with it ;-;
My first actual OC wasn’t too bad... she was a simple pink fox with a flower crown ( she wasn’t really a furry )
But, The only thing I hated about this OC was that the pinks were really bland, the first drawing of her had barely any anatomy. I hated the bland colors because I really love pastel colors. I just need colors that are not too bland and definitely no bright colors !! I hate looking at bright colors..
My first official OC (the one I actually first labelled as an “oc”) had a horrific design which was literally only one colour except from some scribble looking gold accents and her skin. The whole outfit was dark purple with no variation, like exactly the shame shade for every article or accesory. Including the hair. Yikes. Also she was named after a UA-camr I thought was cool when the name definitely wouldn’t have fitted in with her location.
My first OCs were:
a robot with bright red hair, one bright blue eye and one dark blue eye, wearing a lime green hoodie and bright blue shorts, and she was an undertale oc so she had a rainbow soul (and infinite health),
and a half human half robot boy who also had a really high health and a rainbow soul.
I’m recreating them both to keep some aspects of them but change the Mary Sue parts of her. The parts I’m not changing, I’m going to explain why they’re there to make them better :)
y’all can remember your first ocs???? mine was probably a my little pony i made when i was 6
Congrats on getting verified!
Thanks! You're the first person to notice >v

i love how haley's comment has more likes than your main comment lmao
Unleashed what does that mean?
This has honestly helped me so much, I used to have a character that had a black hoodie, fishnet everything, angel and devil wings and cat ears...
I cringe when I look back at it...

i always design my characters before doing their story, sometimes the design itself inspiries my story
but hey
das jus me
Junkii's corner Same
I do the personality and all of that, then the design, and then the story
Then change up the design a small bit to fit better
Junkii's corner no it's not just you
Haha me too :) I knew I wanted my OC to be a redhead, and eventually she became this super tan, freckled and fiery red head. She is just the epitome of warmth and fire to me, hence the development of her fire abilities and her sometimes aggressive personality. If a drawing sticks, they get a story too 🌟
Leah R, personally, I think the firey, hot headed red head thing is kind of overused, but not necessarily in a way that you can't ever use it. I see those kinds of characters a lot, but it can be done if you do it well
Eyepatches are popular for no reason, and it bothers me because people assume my OC Kora has an eyepatch because it’s “cool”, but she was based off of me and I have a problem with one eye and I thought it would be interesting.
my oc has an eyepatch because one of their eyes is really sensitive to light so i felt that 😭😭
Thank you, this will help me fix my old OC. She looks too stuffy in her clothes, she doesn't really fit in any climate, nor does she really look realistic. Not to mention I haven't drawn her in my new paint program yet, and only did small sketches of random stuff. Time to get drawing!
Why is your name STD Drawings..... Sexually Transmitted Drawings? Ewwww! You sell art by doing it..... O.O
CrescentRisingDragon AJ it's SCD drawings...
Mhh.. I don't get the whole "decide what the character should be before designing!".
The only thing I decide is their most prominent personality, like, being superficial and let the character have a position with the nose very high.
Then, I will just let them be. I let them interact with other characters in my head and get them to know, but have the design first.
My characters are developing for years now and I don't know all of their backstory yet, there is so much to discover.
I completely understand that! I let my characters develop as if they were real people. Development takes time and shouldn't be a rushed thing.
Honestly, there is no one real way to develop a character. Everyone has their own method to it.
Hootles Yep, but a lot people do think their way to create one is the one and only
Yeah, same. I can't count the times I've designed a character with a specific personality in mind, only to draw them a couple times and realize they're a completely different person now. And it's alright! If it's the most natural way for them to be, why should I force them to act differently?
The point is to not just throw into the character random elements without a good reason. A good character design has to start from a good idea of who this character is, and if it changes over time then its design will also change to reflect the changing personality.
Just like how we change over time , I'm not the same person I was a few years ago but back then I knew who I was just as well as I know who I am today, and with my personality my looks also changed, like my hair and clothing style.
Just when I was struggling with my designs looking too Mary-Suey/Deviantart like, you made this vid. Thank you, helped a lot :)

Kami Sama I am learning French. I was going to go to France, but it's too expensive. Sorry that you can't be here for the live stream. That sucks.
Haha, it reminds me of my characters back then. Me and my friend were making a story together (we still do, but we are considering our studies as the first priority). She was the writer and I was the illustrator. I literally made characters with Rapunzel-like hair, poofy dresses that somehow defied the laws of gravity and made them wear eye patches, and then cat ears etc. Looking back on it, it was quite weird, but that weird design prompted me to make a better version of the character with shorter hair, considering that they were magical girls (the bunny magical is seriously adorable) and made the dresses less like parachutes. Damn, the old days. Your video elaborating on this made me really look back on my other characters that had overly exaggerated traits and how much thought I had to go about redesigning them and my friend who had written a thousand drafts to make better understanding about the climate and area.

If the character that you fixed on the right is in a hot climate shouldn't she wear a different colored top because black gets the hottest in heat, and wouldn't the black makeup come off because she would sweat. not trying to be picky just something I just felt like saying❤
Hailee Hilarides It's not always hot in the desert? How come it's always hot in Texas then???? We have Summer for 9.5 months???
Grante xpe
>Claims to have lived in Mojave desert 12 years
>Can't spell alleged home correctly
If that isn't the most useless lie I've ever seen, I don't know what is.
Grante xpe Nobody consistently spells their home of 12 years wrong. That's not "a little mistake", that's "I'm functionally illiterate". For fucks sake, you didn't spell it right even once. It's the spelling of a foreigner who's only heard of this "Moe-ha-vee" desert in conversations and just guessed at spelling.
SweetkawaiifoxXo I can see where the black makeup would come off with sweat, but in a lot of cases, people put black around their eyes to help take some of the sun from out of their eyes. Look at football and baseball players for instance!
as lavendertowne pointed out, its for contrast reasons. it's to make the art itself more aesthetically pleasing, which is also very important when creating a character designed for art reasons.
and im pretty sure their is such thing s waterproof makeup
Just saying, OCs _can_ have two differently-coloured eyes in my opinion. Real people can also have two differently-coloured eyes. It's called heterochromia.
She isn't saying you can't do it, its just that a lot of young artist do that for almost all of their characters, making it kinda overused, despite it being pretty gosh darn rare in real life...neither she nor I are stopping you from making you characters with heterochromia, though
I have a blue eye and a brown eye
Well, the kind of OCs she's talking about is the ones that have a super red eye and a saturated purple one. Like. Wtf dude
Yeah, you can do that and it can look great, but most people give their Oc's eye colors that clashes or are just plain unrealistic and cringy
@@sininspiracion oh no! I'm starting a new comic and all the sisters have a red eye
In the world of fandoms and fangirls we call those
"Bad ocs" Mary Sues
No, that's where the world wraps around them.
That's not what a Mary Sue is a Mary Sue can be an OC but also can be a real the Mary Sue is a writing issue in which a character isn't only overpowered but can also ignore rules and bend them when needed in a story just so she can be "Badass" however it always results in a bad story
I'm actually making a really edgy OC, but he is also a ninja, which I guess could be a bit of an excuse for his edginess? idk. He is also a bad guy (like, an antagonistic guy) that goes to night clubs and wears a biker jacket when he is in public. I barely even started on him and I love him so much omg.
That sounds cliche as hell
i like it tbh
@@fishgilbert6875 yes. yes it was.
ahahaha as a 14 year old i hated angst oc's and avoided them as much as i could, same with special snowflake oc's. this really started with the whole mlp alicorn oc debate and all my characters (generally based off characters i created in games etc. minecraft when i played it) are normal. none have any special abilities to them and most are human (excluding a character that i made for a friends story which is a hybrid) there are no heirs to thrones, tragic backstories, just normal peeps living normal lives and this still happens today as the most eccentric my oc's go is a character i based of my GTA 5 char that is rather stuck up but at the same time enjoys havoc.
what are "special snowflake ocs" exactly tho?
ニンジン I think he is talking about those characters that are different from anyone, like:
"My OC is 14 years old, has superpowers (that nobody else in their universe has), is orphan cause their parents were killed when they were young (for no apparent reason or for something extremely unlogical, like their parents were extremely powerful sorcerers or something like that), and they are trying to take revenge because of that. Also they are a black belt on everything (showing that they are super strong and good at fighting, even tho they probably wouldn't have enough time in their life to do training and those exercises), they also have a chronic disease that makes them very weak and that can make them have a huge fever and be extremely ill at any moment (with is a very unrealistic disease for a character like that, and that will make their adventure even harder), they also have a depression because of the death of their parent and they have poor self esteem and suicidal thoughts (just to make everyone feel extremely sorry for this character). Hey, did I mention that they are a half person, half angel cat too (because of aesthetic purposes)?..."
being a snowflake is literally being different from anyone else, and it seems that there's a lot of people o make their character to be that on purpose just to make them be different of anyone else, by making the mistake that everyone does.
(Im not English, and I don't know if I made any mistakes, so I'll just leave this here)
Prosa2002 Aqua you're mostly right :D though this also includes Mary sue characters (perfect in every way and are liked by everyone)
Prosa2002 Aqua Although I agree with most of what you said, I kinda disagree with some parts, I mean having a demi-human is okay if the story takes place in a some kind of fantasy world where demi-humans are common and pure blooded humans are rare. It really just depends on the world/ universe they reside in, though I must agree with the totally-different-thing-no-matter-what-world-they're-in-and-it-seems-like-they-will-never-fit-in kind of characters.
Oh and Nightsicles, don't forget to make your characters interesting in a way. No need for superpowers or other things like that, interesting in their normal ways, cause if a character is too plain, they are not that interesting, which is kinda like making a carbon copy of one character while not having atleast one distinctive trait
Pastel Memories oh no don't worry I've developed my characters the have a story and strong personality to keep them interesting and are still developing their designs even after 4 years or so. I'm also perfectly fine with people having oc's with powers and that are not human, I myself just tend to go on a more normal route, almost as if they are representations of myself. even in saying that, i do have at least one character (don't know how many are in my sketch books) that is not completely human but like quite a few, I still need to give their design more attention.
my character is me with a bag on my head :)
Notrox coolio (• ε •)
When you said hot topic I thought you said hot pocket
wow i just accidentally stumbled upon your stuff and its amazing
I KNOW RIGHT?
Most of my characters are a bit too "simple" for some people, not there story; but more design wise. I don't really know if they are too simple, but with designs I like to keep them that way if there not an eccentric space knight or somthing like that, for realism.
I really love you're art style and personality design, even if it is the polar opposite to mine, it's really cool! I do really like how you paint the realism character!
Your character designing skills are so good ,_, super pleasing to look at and great personality and story. Just A+ everything
Black makeup whould only attract heat.
But I love you, Lavender Towne!
it's not about the heat it's about the light
I think it's supposed to be like the area around the eyes attracts heat so the eyes don't but I might be wrong
It doesn’t attract heat it just absorbs light and some heat. The fact that it doesn’t reflect as much light makes sense because it makes it easier to see as the light won’t reflect into her eyes.
Hazzy Drawz OK that makes sense
when I made characters the design was good, not too clusterd, but also functional, but the bio, OHHHH THE BIO!It was basically every Mary-Sue/Gary-Stu mixed together into a horrible amalgamation of cringe.
Cold and wet climate.... WELCOME to the UKKKKKK

I still like my chemical romance but luckily I’m not a gacha life kid anymore.

One day I want my occupation to be "magical girl stuff"
Shiny Smeargle
So for my characters i have a fun little process. Most of my characters are anthro animals to make my characters alot more different.
So first i would look at the animal the character will be and design the character’s outfit.
I do this so that specific elements of the animal can show through.
Then i create a personality based on 3 things:
A big conflict for the character
A small design impact
And then based on the animal’s elements(like a fluffy bunny character would be afraid of the snakes or maybe be extremely fast and hasty.)
Afterwards i begin to play with colors. Most of the time i go for softer colors and some that go together,
Like purples blues and greens.
However depending on a characters personality i will break that and get into the minds of my characters to see what colors they would wear.
So for like my character Maya who lives for bright pinks and blues i give her a bright pink and blue dress.
For hairstyles on these characters... honestly i pick solely based on design asthetic and personality. Like the punk character has a giant mowhawk. Or the otaku girl has some over the top anime hairstyle.
I love designing characters and i used to have a deviantart i was proud of. Maybe i will make a new one one day so i can have feedback on some designs but oh well.
Dang, this is useful :D
Y'know how my very first OC looks like when I was a kid? Yeah, I know you would all expect some rainbow monstrosity...... Actually it was a guy with blonde hair, yellow eyes, and simply a green hoodie and grey jeabs and black sneakers...... Thats literally it....
Frisky Dreemur making your oc too simple and boring can instead make it very forgettable, which is also a bad trait
I create 'characters' like the "don't" one but I don't name them, I use them as doodles and to mess around with unique and/or strange designs
(•///•)
I just want you to know that you're one of my biggest inspiration in art. I feel like I've gotten better (but not a lot) so I just want you to know that and thanks
really helpful on suggestions of improving a character. i also like that you didnt just bluntly come out with "you cant do this because it makes a character bad"
Guys, i know Lavendertowne didn't mention this, but the time period matters too. If you had a kid wearing stuff from the 90s meeting Thomas Jefferson, it wouldn't really make sense.

Ahhhh this brings me so much nostalgia. This is the first Lavender Town video I ever watched
Ahhh yes, Still much nostalgia, very good
The "Artic bunny" is called a snow shoe hare ^.^
this is one of the most important videos in my art journey. im a hobbiest OC artist for 3 years now, and this video completely changed my perspective on character design, i mean it in the most positive way possible. every single one of my current OCs follows this forumla, and i love them all :))
thank you so much, haley
aww, but i like heterochromia/different colored eyes :c
Meowzzar same, the only issue with heterochromia is that its overused, especially when it comes to rlly edgy, 'bad' ocs lol
I don't completely dislike using heterochromia in my ocs, but some people use it too much. I've seen a lot of people that all their ocs have heterochromia. The only reason one of my characters have heterochromia is that he is the child of a goat and a cat(I don't know how I came up with this XD)and is a combination of the two so since his parents both have different colored eyes, he has one eye that is the color of his mother's eyes and one of his father's.
the reason some of mine have it is because i like how it looks. and isn't "because it's a real genetic mutation ergo my character was just born with it" a good enough reason to have it? :o though i only use that reason when using natural eye colors, like brown and blue
I used heterochromia on one of my OCs, green and red eyes with a yellow tint in them. Childish mind, why did you have to be so stupid?
I still use them today, but now with any of my newer OCs I try to go for a color that suited them well, like ocean blue and cyan eyes, with a violet purple tint. It mixed in with Galaxite pretty well, and a few of my other heterochromia eye OCs. Now though, more than half of them have the same color eyes. ;3
Alice Wasteland hair colour can be changed and stay realistic so sometimes it's a good idea to change that ,especially if you're dealing with a goth or punk stereotype. Alsoo nicknames so maybe charlotte has dyed black hair with purple tips and a nickname like Titus that she is known for since she has that kinda punk stereotype ;3 also contacts as well like what if some character has trouble with themselves? Maybe they just find blue eyes attractive. Sorry for this long ass comment but maybe you could give them a foreign name that is a combination of certain words to form a regular name while still supporting Le design? Toodles
Lavendertowne: *basically makes everything causal
Also lavender: *makes character magical girl*
When I create OCs, they're always based off people around me.
Their designs depend on the things they like, how they actually look like, their actual clothes, their personality and their nationality.
I have synthesia, which means songs and albums have certain colors that i feel when I listen to it, so i think while drawing OCs “just make him/her look like (insert album/song)”
lmao the many times you said
"um"😂😂😂
Alyssa LMAO
she said "um" around 103 times, in the span of 11 minutes and 16 seconds, which is almost 10 ums per minute
I can’t not notice it anymore omg
When you were blackening her hands I thought of twenty one pilots tbh
Grace Font same

My OC is inspired by the kinds of people who gathers information in exchange for money actually, everything hidden in a black cap, gary hoodie and black face mask to cover her identity while people are paying her to get dirt on their enemies
