Stan, you are right about BACKLUND,he was a great athlete.I am glad you said this because you two had great matches.
Hansen was so killer in his AWA run and all his tours in Asia. Backlund was as famous worldwide. I love hearing these stories.
Backlund gets overlooked way too much in the title history picture. He may not have been the flashiest character, but he was a real wrestler in every sense of the word.
That's not appreciated in a cartoon.
You have bear in mind pre golden era there less focus on entertainment aspect and more on in ring so he didn't need to have to a personality . Vince jr never thought much of bob after hogan won belt bob was pushed down the card then when bob came back on 1994 he was buried losing to nash in five second
@@HBKStyles Mr. Backlund came after his first run with the championship. I actually prefer Mr. Backlund to All American Backlund, he was just as good in the ring, but now his promos were entertaining
His first run Bob held the belt for 5 years before dropping it to the Iron Sheik
Even Harley Race agreed that Backlund was so well conditioned, and so strong, and tough and skilled, that he could pretty much just kick your ass if he so decided.
Saw this guy and Backlund in a cage match in Madison Square Garden. Its fashionable now to say that Backlund was an unpopular Champion. I remember it differently. The garden was sold out that night , the crowd was rocking and they were squarely behind Backlund.
Thank you! Watch any of the old MSG cards, they go nuts for Backlund. He put on great matches with Hansen, Adonis, Muraco, Snuka, you name it. He wasn't a great talker but he was a great wrestler and great champion.
Agree totally with you stardaddy. Backlund was massively popular.
Moron. Almost 6 years as champion yet unpopular? Your uneducated and misinformed.
@@paulzawertany7908 reading comprehension goes a long way. He meant it seems to be a popular blanket statement to say he was unpopular, and finished with he was there and remembered the real truth of the matter. Now give me a like for wasting 2 minutes of my life spelling this out for you!
exactly. I remember walking in to the Garden with my dad around 1980 when he wrestled Pat Patterson in a Steel Cage match - the place was rocking and packed, no cordoned off seats. And when Backlund won, I got to know what concerts would sound like 7 years from then lol
I would have liked to have seen Bob Backlund vs Steven Regal in the mid-1990's. Backlund is the real deal and probably legitimately can't be pinned or forced to submit. He's just too damn good. Him vs Regal would have been great to see.
This comment is five years old. I am floored by the infinite possibilities of what may have been.
This is a great comment
Stan Hansen the excellent class very nice man
Dude!! I love you Sheiky Baby!!!!!!FACK!!!! the Brian Blair!!!
Great comments. I agree, Bob Backlund was a great champion.
Seems so easy going outside the ring as opposed to his wrestling heel persona.
i may have put this on another video, but i just can't over it. when i was a kid, this man scared the piss out of me. and now to see this handsome, jovial guy smh . . . you don't have to earn the fear and heel status as much as you used to. these guys got pushes, sure, but a lot of them really put themselves over.'
He was horrifying!
Stan Hansen was an AMAZING westler.
Stan Hanson an all time great.
Alot of them oldtime Wrestlers say Backland was a great athlete. I think it was Rick Flair who was asked about a Rumor he was going to double cross Backlund in the Ring. He said on his best day he wouldn't be able to take Backlund.
Rick Flair is quite short, about 5'11 and the half inch. He has limited wrestling skills unlike Backlund, Mil Mascaras, Jack Brisco and many more. If wrestling is as real as boxing, the best ranking that Flair ever had may be at number 30.
@@abrahmanharun2154 Who cares though? It's not real. Hogan and Austin couldn't do technical wrestling at all and drew more money than anyone.
Man Stan looks great...this is what happens when you save your money.
Stan wrestled a couple of times at the ECW Arena.
I could listen to Hansen all day. A class act.
I wouldn't want to p*ss him off though.
Met Stan Hanson at 1st show ever worked on for the NWF DC Drake he is a calm good man was reading the financial page so he is no dummy and he participated in a group chat this took place at Stafford High School in Va.
I think it must have been pretty frustrating to have been Backlund in the mid-80s. You've been champ for 6 years and selling out MSG with your strong technical background. Then the owner brings in his son and he decides to put the belt on a guy with no technical wrestling ability simply because he's half a foot taller than you and 50 lbs heavier...and it works, wrestling blows up, and he makes more money than you ever did.
Bob Backlund - Bret Hart. Top wrestlers who made it seem real, but are somewhat overlooked when it comes to the greatest of all time. Is Drew McIntyre going to be the modern equivalent of those guys?
A couple of posters wondered what the conditions were that Stan mentioned, so I thought I'd post those here. All info here is from Stan's excellent book, "The Last Outlaw".
The condition was that Stan would not be pinned or give up during any match during his '81 WWF tour. As Stan mentions, he didn't think McMahon Sr. would go for that, but he did. Once Stan got there, he started getting some pressure to put Bruno or Bob over by pin, but he refused (and rightfully so).
Backlund claims in his book that Stan was supposed to put him over in their second MSG match, and that Stan refused at the last minute and held up McMahon Sr. for a third match. Backlund got angry about it and followed Skoaland's advice to "eat him up" during their third MSG match, a cage match. Backlund wanted to show Hansen that you didn't come into the WWF and try to make your own rules.
I enjoyed Backlund's book, but that story just rings hollow. McMahon Sr. always had his MSG main events written in stone months in advance, so the thought that he'd rearrange his bookings at the drop of a hat doesn't really make sense.
Chris Bryant interesting stuff Chris. Did it go on to say whether or not Backlund had any success in "eating him up"?
Backlund seemed to think so. :) The match is on UA-cam and it's about 10 minutes long. About four minutes of that is Stan almost making it out of the cage, and the other six is pretty much Bob punching Stan, along with a rare piledriver from Backlund. It's nowhere near as conclusive a win as Bruno's cage win against Hansen in MSG.
They worked together in Japan in 1980
The man of 1000 "you knows"
Backlund said the matches with Hanson were very stiff because Hanson was trained by the Funks but they put the Amarillo title on Backlund. Hanson never liked Backlund because of that. Backlund said that when a heel came in they got 2 matches against Backlund. Hanson got 3.
Stan the Man.
He scared me when I was a kid lol
lol the end
Tony atlas said if he was a heel then bob backlund would have been even bigger because people didn't like his clean image but if he was a heel he would have been great.
The Lariat
andre established hansen in japan
The agreement was Stan didn’t get pinned. He won via countout over backlund
I hated stan with a deep passion. I was there when he broke brunos neck. I was there when bruno came back and got his revenge. Its great seeing mr hanson niw. A true gentleman. Thanks for the passion
I wonder what the agreement was?
Check my reply at the top of the comments.
Kurt Angle is the greatest athlete the WWE has ever had
did he take any belt in his date
Gday luv
Bobby was a great rassla strong as a ox
original Kurt Angle
fought long hard matched at MSG
often times curfew lifted
sold put MSG
perfect class act hated the dumb gimmick
he did not need it
chicken wing.
Exactly what I wanted to say, the original Angle, however Angle did do it better, which is a good thing
📀💿💿
Hansen tried to dictate terms to Vince Sr. and Arnold Skaaland who was with the office and Backlund's manager said to "eat him up" in the ring and he did!
Ridiculous comment. Nothing happened to Stan (or anyone else at that level) without their cooperation.
Backlund was a Howdy Doody who had the belt handed to him in the biggest mistake of of Little Vinnie’s reign of running the show! Superstar Billy Graham should have had a long reign like Bruno as champion!
No lol
No
✋✋ 👀
Phillip you are backlund hadto shoot on stan to protect himself wrestling isnt totally fixed
Backlund may have been a great athlete and amateur wrestler but he was a boring professional wrestler and an even more boring champion.
But not heel backlund
@@brown123487
Mr. Bob Backlund
He should have gotten a bigger run as champion when he was a heel putting the belt on Nash was just stupid Nash had the personality and work rate of a wet fart.
