By the time he wrestled in the WWWF, Backlund was the Missouri state champion, as well as a known quantity in Florida. That’s why he was recommended to Vince McMahon Sr. as a replacement champion by promoter Eddie Graham. Not saying that Patera couldn’t have helped him smooth out some edges, but Backlund was specifically brought into the company to become a babyface champion, so he couldn’t have been that green

The Jersey Shore town Mr. Patera is trying to remember is Wildwood, which was always a popular summer stop for WWWF events back then. I was in Wildwood that hot, humid Monday evening for the sell-out show at the now long-gone Wildwood Convention Hall. It was 8/15/77 and according to local news reports, there were twice as many people gathered outside the hall on the boardwalk as there were fans inside! I might have the program somewhere listing other long forgotten matches, but I definitely recall then WWWF champion Superstar Graham v. Jay Strongbow as the main event. I also know the date was 8/15/77 because Elvis Presley died the next day - and yes it was as hot down the shore as Ken Patera remembers it. Regardless of the unbearable heat, a lot of fans got to meet a few wrestlers (like Graham and Patera) working on their tans earlier that day on the beach. Unlike his legendary wrestling "persona" Superstar Billy Graham was easily the nicest of the bunch while others were just nasty and unapproachable - even to small kids who wanted to meet them. Bob Backlund, who wrestled Patera that night in Wildwood and went on to become WWWF champion after beating Superstar Graham six months later, was also a very nice fellow. Although he seemed to lack the charisma of other WWWF stars, he was already a huge fan favorite. I wish I could recall who else wrestled that night, but Mr. Patera was so decent to everyone who approached him on the boardwalk before and after that night's card.

Bob Backlund owned and was super over. Not great on promos as a babyface but owned every wrestler of his era based on his strength. He dead weight lifted Hulk Hogan onto his shoulders, put Hulk on the top turnbuckle and slapped him in the face. That is owning. It was also a big part of the fans hating on the heels that BB beat. I wouldn't be surprised if many wrestlers didn't like Bob because he was so powerful. Pound for pound, probably the strongest WWF wrestler ever.
