    Well - for 2 weeks I've been taking this new feeling with me to the course and I can say that it has fundamentally changed my game. Bit long winded this but I'm excited... :-)
    I've been playing golf since my teens in the early 80s (other than a 15yr break) and have been down to 7, about 2 yrs ago. In Jan I was playing to 8 when I had a massive hand injury with my tablesaw, severing tendons, damaging finger joints and ripping out nerves, almost losing the fingers and thumb of my left hand. For almost 6 months I was resigned to never being able to play a decent round or even hit a big drive again. A tough time for me (and I'm a serious pianist).
    In the last 2 months I have been able to hold a club again and have worked very hard to regain my strength and swing. Having had many lessons over the years my mind has been full of swing thoughts as I've come to terms with my 'new' left hand and the challenges it brings. Gingerly I started playing Sat comps and endured an endless procession of scores of around 20 points, blowing out to 10.8.
    Then 2 weeks ago, I watched this clip and the image of casting my arms towards the target line has stuck with me. It is so easy to visualise and repeat on the course and it has almost completely replaced the tirade of technical jumbo that would plague me as I stood over the ball. Now I am striking the ball as confidently as ever, but so much better than ever before. My dispersion has reduced significantly and I'm able to shape the ball like never before. This is all so amazing and unexpected for me!
    A big event for me this week was to watch my handicap finally turn the corner and come down, signalling that I am actually improving and may even get to low singles one day.
    I have worked very hard but I will stand up and attribute most of this wonderful personal victory to Shawn's infinite wisdom and in particular this one clip. I have also learned much from Extraordinary Golf (Fred Shoemaker) about the joy of golf, the mind and being present and aware without being self critical.
    As a footnote (because this post isn't long enough yet...), having had months lamenting the real possibility of never playing properly again, now every shot I play is like a Christmas present. I can honestly say that this event has taught me much about gratitude and happily, my enjoyment of the game is in no way linked to my scoring. As the competitive bugger that I am however, I will continue to work my butt off to get as close to scratch as I can before I croak.
    So a very big thanks (and a man hug) Shawn if you read this - your help has really been of immense benefit to me, on and off the course! Cheers from Sydney, Aust - Dave (and I'm playing piano again too!) :-)

      I feel exactly the same deldridg, played off 5 for 30 years but never hit the ball that well (short game always saved me). No technical shite in my head now! That feeling of smashing through a door with a battering ram/hammer/the golf club and kind of imagining the left leg is the door frame (or planted against the frame) - using both shoulders and adding perpetual motion in for extra speed and natural lag...it's amazeballz. Shawn rocks. It ties in with the head angle he talks about too and throwing the club to the target. Once you suddenly get it...you suddenly get it and...oh...my...God!!! Thanks Shawn, going to go premium over winter as a thank you :-) (obviously when I've stopped playing so much damn golf)
      Good luck to you Deldridg!

    Good lord, this works and how!! I'm currently returning from a bad hand injury (tablesaw) and have blown out from 8.4 to 10.9. Since being able to pick up a club again a month ago I've been working hard at getting things back on track. Today I decided to give this a go, though not with actually throwing the club. The feeling of the arms being cast towards the target, engaging both shoulder sockets (4:05) is perhaps the most profound golf insight I've had in years and years of lessons and playing. The new problems to deal will be relearning my new distances (10% to 15% longer) and managing the embarassment of being right up the middle of the fairway all the time. Very wordy I know but I'm pretty excited and am VERY grateful to you, all the way over here in Sydney, Aust! Cheers and thank you Shawn, Dave

    Glad I found this video, because it provides everything you need to know about making the proper move through the ball - you basically drag the club through until your arms are virtually extended at the target, which makes this drill the ultimate method of learning the essence of the delayed hit - pretty amazing stuff - working with this is really going to pay off. Literally so much gold in this. Saved my enjoyment of the game. The hardest part is committing to the throw when you get over the ball.

    Hi again Shawn! Still watching your videos as we bring this golf season to a close. Made it down to a 6.6 handicap this year so not too bad but got some work to do. The point of my post today is something I discovered while doing drills throwing the club. I did some video work this last week comparing my throwing the club drills with my actual swing and was disappointed at the difference I saw. I thought I was getting it but I was missing something. I set out to do some hard work and get it fixed so I was truly throwing the club in my swing and not flipping at the bottom. I got so frustrated that I couldn't get the result in my real swing that I put my clubs away and meditated a little on exactly why my brain would not allow me to throw the club at the bottom. I convinced myself I would give it one last try and I finally had a breakthrough! My flipping the club at the bottom was simply my brain saying, "Hey idiot...you're never gonna hit this ball if we don't somehow get this club head LOWER TO THE GROUND!" So I tried exaggerating at first...getting myself as low as I could to the ground with what I felt was excessive knee bend. Wouldn't you know it...flushed shot after flushed shot and NO FLIP! The interesting part was what felt like excessive knee bend to me looked like a normal, athletic stance on video. Classic struggle of real vs. feel.
    Anyway, I really hope this post benefits someone else as I'm sure there are others that are struggling with something similar. Any person that struggles/struggled with flipping the club is going to be WAY WAY WAY too far from the ground to actually throw the club as shown in your videos. Answer...get LOWER...WAY LOWER. You will find yourself smashing shots with awesome lag and being way more consistent throwing the club. Thanks again Shawn for all of your hard work! - Chris

    Hi Shawn. Just wanted to say a big thanks for this video (and your coaching methods in general) from down in Australia and helping me get rid of swing thoughts and enjoy my golf. It’s taken me a few months of practice to get my head and body used to the feeling of ‘throwing towards the target’ but on the weekend it all clicked. My handicap has yo-yoed around 15 and I have never nailed a hole round of consistent ball strikes for a whole round. But on the weekend I was able to hit consistently pure shots and even holed a sand wedge from 130yds! I can’t wait to get out there and do it again!! 🙏👍😎

I've been sad over my game for a while, it's really nice seeing some breakthrough. It also made me realize my grip was a bit too strong, I am now holding it in my right hand how I do with just my right hand (still strong but not ultra strong). Def adding that flicking motion with one hand as a practice swing before each shot moving forward! I've been watching a lot of your content and it has been giving me hope, thanks :)

    I've had so many great range sessions with other theories and swing thoughts; push down, turn, drop, turn over, pull the shoulder etc....I get grooved and really start to hit the ball almost like a scratch player. None of that can I actually do on the golf course; at least not consistently. However, this lesson, throwing the club is the most natural thing you can do for your swing IMO. If you are confused, or are having a hard time, I'd suggest just doing this a few times, relax and go play some golf. Because it's winter, this is the only thing I'm doing now, no time for the range, and my scores are dropping. I wish I could get my putting to cooperate some more, but it is fun to just go out there and swing like if you're throwing the club at your target. Thanks Shawn.

    I remember Fred Shoemaker talking about this but I always felt this wasn’t aplicable to irons. However, this is golden advice for the driver in developing the skill. I feel I have to get the head moving quicker and create more lag to feel the club is being thrown up to the target. It’s definitely a hole in my golfing skills. So I’m looking forward to more natural ball speed.

    Shawn, this vid is an eye opener and revelation of how deep into the downswing the arms-hands must be without releasing the angles where the full straightening of both arms occur about two feet past impact. It’s difficult to trust this proper and late release to occur because, for me, I tend to tighten up or tense up just before impact thinking the clubface will be wide open and not square up. The revelation is to have and trust tension free and “oily” shoulder-arms hinges, especially in the wrists. Do you have a method or skill you can suggest so I don’t need to “bust my brain or mind” to overcome this innate fear? I have a terrible time with this mind game which negatively fights my natural tendency to release at the ball.

See “how to put the ball in the way of the swing shawn clement golf wrx” and predict contact based on the throw to target and also, make sure you are throwing through an intermediate point; see :”why you can’t line up properly shawn clement”

    I use this with absolute beginners and they end up striking the ball remarkably well in no time whatsoever. Forget about grip, don't waste any time on stance or takeaway, etc, just tell them to throw a club. So simple, we are all wired on how to do this. Wish I had known about this so many years ago. Without a doubt, this is hands down the number one drill for beginner golfers. Period.

  • @PaxAmor1

    This is very helpful. I think one thing that makes it harder with a golf club is that you are not just throwing a straight stick on one plane. You are throwing an angled stick that is on plane only part of the time. It's more like throwing a hockey stick. So you can't just imagine throwing your hands in a straight circle in your mind. The club head might travel in a simple circle on one plane, but your hands divert inward from that circle as the face of the blade turns square. Or am I misunderstanding that?

      Lance toujours à droite de la cible au loin; mais essaie toujours d’avoir un point intermédiaire très prêt pour t’orienter et livrer ton lancer. La vue de côté est toujours trompeuse et ne doit jamais être utilisée!

    Thanks for the great videos! I started with your sledgehammer video from years ago and have been binge watching lol. For throwing, Do you throw to the target or to the line you want the ball to start? When I have the target in mind it tends to make my path more out to in. (Could have something to do with distorted side vision you mentioned).

    All your videos are great and I'm trying this. I'm throwing the clubs straight as long as I have no intermediate point (ball, 2 pegs, dandelion, grass or whatever). As soon as I'm trying to take a step forward to hit something, I'm throwing the club backwards again. Almost hit my car in the front yard from practicing in the back yard, and I have smashed some tiles on my roof... I just can't NOT focus on what I want to bring with the motion into the picture. I wouldn't take defective out as a possibility... Any ideas?

    I’ve thrown a few clubs in my time :-). I do need to take my old clubs out to throw “Shawn-like”. It’s a way to get the mechanics right without over-thinking. Love to toss a ball to help with pitches. I did focus today on a spot 18” in front of the ball - like I wanted to hit thru that spot and I hammered the shots long and straight! Even with some swing mechanic thoughts still running thru my head - the focus ahead of the ball “worked”.

    So if you throw towards a target the clubhead will automatically be square? You dont have to think about the clubheads rotation?

    • @golflessons
      @golflessons  4 роки тому +2

      Hi Dim!
      Your anatomy is already perfectly designed for rotation is all aspects; however, being able to predict that the distance to ball, ball position, club face angle-grip relation and levels are optimum at address so that when you do throw the club to the target, you can predict that the ball will be well struck, and start on the line you want and curve in the air the amount you want.
      See “predict solid contact and direction shawn clement” and for those of you on premium, the videos are “predict contact” and “the goldie locks series”

      My pro has had me toss a small medicine ball. Helps with the release and my rotation to clear the hips better vs my slide and tilt. Hands even, Ball is straight. If I rotate right hand over left on release: draw. Hold left over right on release: get a fade.

      Hey Stuey! This is why we go to “play it again sports” and get old $5.00 clubs; and please don’t throw graphite shafted clubs! They brake easily;
      You will not have to let go of the club with the bottom hand btw when you throw the clubs; both hands can participate in the task as long as you are NOT throwing AT THE BALL.

      @melted butter: have you seen Liam Robinson do that? He’s a European Tour pro, said he didn’t have the $$ to hit range balls one year so he’d slam into a bunch of old towels with a very light grip. That’s how he prepared for the tour one year ( might have been weather too, along with $$). If the club released straight, he knew he was doing it correctly.
