Nice work on part 2 Jason. Really like the story telling and think the wide aspect ratio looks great. Those 17’ solo canoe can certainly be tough with some headwind.
Jason you and Jordan make a good team. The funny thing about it is you guys just met for this trip. Most people would never do that. Keep up the good work. Enjoying both of your navigational communication. Like I said....Good teamwork!
Thanks David. That was Jordan's first time soloing on a trip! He managed well and yeah we helped each other out. He made a good call in part three to scout a rapid section that I was going to just run. :-)
It's as if you went to film school. This trip, besides being mesmerizing and engrossing, is a lesson in telling a tale. I've put it in my to study folder. Good going. Mark
The moment when you say it feels like were in the Yukon is interesting.... I felt the exact same thing in that same spot, I had done a very long Yukon trip the summer before paddling the Spanish. I camped at that spot on the gravel bar in low water!!
Hey guys you got a package. No whinning, just fun. 👍😁 I love it did Quetico in a full ten days of rain with guys that cried like little kids. I paddled solo. Only one out of 7. Crybabies. I just laughed. You guys are GREAT. Way to go men. Look like you enjoyed. Thanks for the share.
Hi Jason you shows get better and better last summer bought new paddle and got my canoe out. For the first time in yrs mostly because of u been at my camp so I never saw them to today hope u are well really enjoyed every minute
October is a fantastic time to be tripping in Ontario but every time I've done it there's definitely been a higher sense of "don't mess up," especially around moving water (and several days of snow.) It's interesting how apparent it is that you both became more comfortable with the swifts/rapids as you went on. Can't wait for part 3!
Looks like an absolute blast. The bad weather makes for memories, Scott better have regrets by now. lol. Cant wait for some warmer weather to get out too, but this is helping with the itch. Thanks again Jason. Cant wait for part 3.
Kudos for maintaining such a positive attitude when the weather can easily get you down. Nothing worse to me than cold rain... You've more guts than me keeping your camera out while running those swifts! Great series Jason.
Glad it has turned out well so far. High risk in those scenarios, so glad you guys are making the right calls with portaging the more challenging rapids. Otherwise great footage and looks like you guys are having fun!
Really enjoyed this episode 2. I had to wait a couple days, which was very difficult, because my wife was hogging the 60" TV..it was worth the wait. Thank you.
I wish. Actually, Say yes to the dress I think. I’ve started telling her for every one of those or Judge Judy I see, even if I just accidentally walk through the room, I have to watch a Tumblehome just to cleanse my brain.
Cold n wet,, it’s “the way she goes” Ray says, lol 👌🇨🇦👍 nice red breasted nuthatch as a alarm in the opening, then a raven, snow and rain kept the birds down, any owls at night around the campsites? Beautiful river, thank you for sharing. Bob 😎
Good stuff. I'm enjoying this adventure! I feel confident you could have made those Rapids. Going into it without a more experienced paddler with you can erode the confidence, but sometimes makes the best memories. No shame in making a decision either way! Looking forward to part 3.
Man, you are the best filmmaker bushcrafter ever! This is a long short story as the Big two hearted river from Hemigway. You are the Hemingway of the video-making! I know it, I did my MSc thesis on Hemingway :) Just let you know, you have fans at the other side of the Earth: I am from Hungary, Europe. This 3 vids and the Karma moose vids are pure mastetpieces! Btw around 8-9 minutes who plays that blues?!
Does it always rain on the Spanish. When we did it it rained hard every day. At one point we got into a hunting camp and got their wood stove going and dried everything then continued on. Great trip though
Awesome trip. What kind of insulation did you end up using under you in your hammock to prevent the frozen backside? What brand of hammock were you using?
Hi Brian, It's a Hennessy... Expedition Zip I believe. The light under quilt is made by OneTigris... Amazon find. With a few simple mods it works well with this hammock. For me it was good down to around 0 Celsius... the last couple nights were -2 and -5. The toes were not happy at -5 but rest of me was pretty good. I used to do the Thermarest program but find the quilt much better / easier.
So a beautiful experience - thanks for sharing! Where does one find and purchase that handy essentials such pocket that you have in front (attached to your vest?)? Thanks
Hi there. The little pouch on the front is actually part of the lifejacket. The lifejacket does have webbing on the front and back to add extra bits. For a while I was using an extra pouch on the back to carry some items but ultimately I wasn't happy with extra weight while paddling.
@@JasonIrwinTumblehome Hi tumble! I was wondering a recommendation for a good quality rain jacket for camping and thought that's what you had along with a front pouch. I will look into that life vest. Thank you so much for the insight. Ciao!
Again, a master at work. Question. Night 3. Was there a ledge in the river on that portage? Perhaps in your water level a fairly obvious stand wave? The weather conditions that you two encountered were a major challenge. I am impressed with how you maintained your sense of humor.
Thank you. I so seem to remember a fairly high standing wave in there near the top of the rapid. There was path in there but it required more skill than we had.
Yeah river noob mistake... in hindsight I can see it approaching clearly (maybe cuz cam is mounted higher?).. lucky I didn't hit a boulder nose on drifting along at that speed.
Thanks Brian! I meant to get back to you about posting link on BCUSA... no probs at all... share away! The gloves were a MEC brand glove, nothing to fancy... sure glad I had them!
Great footage. I bet that if you hadn't mentioned the missing pfd, no one would have noticed! The whole "forgetting to switch the camera on" thing can be a real ball breaker. Its not like you can go back and do it again. The best footage I never got was on the Snake when we ran the main rapids and dumped. It would have been awesome 'cept I'd put the Go Pro on to photo mode.:-(
@@JasonIrwinTumblehome Yes the Go Pro is an awesome little tool that has revolutionised our ability to tell a story. I'm glad it has moved on from the "I think it is pointing in the right direction" days.
We heard the train in the distance on that last night in part two... we were close to rapids though so it drowned it out a bit. We heard a moose quite close to us than night as well... gave us a good jump as it mashed through the bush nearby.
Thanks Mike. It's a Hennessy zipper model and I have a light under quilt (OneTigris) that is good to about -1. 2nd last night it was -2 ish and the last night was -5 with a breeze all night. It was pain though... shifting around and chilly in the compressed areas. I do like the way the quilt works... just need a better one for sub zero.
Tumblehome awesome! Very helpful. I made an underquilt out of an old sleeping bag but I think it will be good only down to -5 ish. Been using a neo air trekker otherwise. Cheers!
Thanks Joe, It's a Hennesy something or other... Expedition Zip I think. I opted for the larger fly as it works as a big tarp... if you go with Hennessy, get the snakeskins too... lets you " put away" the hammock even while set up so you can chill under the tarp in bad weather. The skins also keep the hammock dry when setting up in the wet. Lots of good hammocks out there now though... try them all!
It’s a wonder Jordan didn’t say don’t forget your PFD I would have. That’s what buddy’s do . That train was a Chapleau crew running it. I knew most of them .
Thanks Michael. I used a Hero 6 mostly but normally I have the DSLR out more too. It was just so wet that I couldn't be bothered at times. I"m pretty impressed with the Hero 6... 7 is supposed to be even better. So often I wanted to get the bigger cam out but was too busy navigating etc... lake travel has its advantages. :-)
Glad you were both safe. Maybe not the best planning - not much experience with whitewater, isolated location, and perfect conditions for hypothermia. Don’t try this at home, kids.
Brings me back to my St. John's days!
Thanks!
Nice work on part 2 Jason. Really like the story telling and think the wide aspect ratio looks great. Those 17’ solo canoe can certainly be tough with some headwind.
Thanks! We had actually booked 15's but due to a mixup we had to roll with those biggies! Hey, maybe we'll meet up in March?
I'm loving the soundtrack as much as I'm reliving a fabulous trip from years ago that kicked off in Bisco

thanks man... yes we were learning things quickly! Jordan was particularly ballsy to do this.. his first time soloing on a trip.
As good as the first time around! Thanks for the cold winter evasion!
You are very welcome!
Admire the stubbornly positive attitude despite those wet, cold conditions. Another great video, thank you!
Thanks Jamie... not much choice really. It would have been worse as a solo trip... better to have someone to complain to :-)
Who is that one lost soul who downvoted this?? Amazing vid, thanks for sharing your experience!

Thank you. I'm partial to that cam angle too. Stabilization on the Go Pro seems to do well from that vantage point as well.
Man those canoes look amazing on this beautiful river, again the water level looks perfect... Well done guys...

Yes! It was Jordan who noticed... I was just silent with my jaw open. I ran two or three rapids like that. :-0
