If you are someone who hits a hook - or curves a ball too far from right to left - you need to understand that you have a club face that's too closed to your path.
There are two things to check. First, If I took a normal setup, the stronger the grip - if it was really rotated clockwise -that would promote a more closed clubface.
For you guys that hit hooks or draws, typically that can be associated with a ball position that's farther back. I like to see the ball position somewhere between my sternum location and my shirt logo.
The next part of the hook and what you have is a path that's overly inside out. The path being to the right hits the hook. If you're struggling with a hook, your path is too far to the right.
What do you do? If I go to the top of my backswing and I'm too far inside out, I need to feel like I'm more over the top, more outside in. If you're way inside out and hitting hooks, you could feel way over the top and you'll probably hit the ball pretty straight.
Something I also do a lot when I play is I feel the club exit more left past impact. The more left the club works past impact, the less it's going to draw and the more that I'll neutralize your ball flight pattern.
The first thing I do with someone if they have a hook and they're swinging too far inside out is I'll put a range bucket halfway between the right foot and the ball. I have it set up just underneath the angle of the club I’m using. It’s in my way. You want to feel the club head working outside of the bucket.Start with short shots, like a little hundred yarder.
Second I just add a layer to that. I put an alignment rod in the bucket to make it a little bit more difficult. I move the bucket back a little bit farther, but it's still kind of in the same spot and I do the opposite of how I want to do when I shallow it. I take the club back where the club is parallel to the ground on my toe line and I want to have the stick about an inch or two in front of that. This will be a little bit more exaggerated. I want to feel like the club stays a little bit more out in front of me.So if you're someone who comes way inside, this station is going to feel way in your way. You're going to have to feel like the club is way outside going back, and way more in front and way more steep coming down.
When getting rid of a hook, you want to get rid of the club coming too far inside. So, you want to put a station behind the ball between your foot and the golf ball, and then you would do the opposite of that. For option number three, I would take the bucket and stick and go to the right of the target. My goal here is to get the club head to the left past impact again to get rid of that draw pattern.
If you're someone who hits hooks, you want to see some cuts. You want to exaggerate and you want to have the golf ball curving to the right. This shouldn't feel minor, especially on day one. f you're trying to get rid of the hook, don't be afraid to hit a bunch of cuts in the beginning. Exaggerate some slices so you can find middle ground.
-If you are hitting hooks, your clubface is too closed. You must do something to get it back to neutral.
-Check your grip and ball position first. Make sure your grip is not overly strong and your ball position is between you sternum location and your shirt logo.
-If your grip is neutral and your ball position is not too far back and you are still hitting hooks, you have is a path that's overly inside out.
-Use one of the three practice stations demonstrated in this video to get your path back to neutral - a bucket behind you, the bucket with stick is number two, and the bucket with the stick in front.

Straightforward useful drills, no BS. One of the best coaches out there. Thanks Eric
My pleasure, Mario. Thanks!
Thank you for addressing the issue quick and to the point. Very helpful!
you got it my friend
This is amazing! I've been struggling with a hook for a while now. This works! You're awesome!
Excellent! Thanks, Jared!
Loved the video!
Appreciate it!
Thank God for UA-cam and thank God for me finding your videos. I spend so much time analysing my swing and forget about simple drills like this to stop getting stuck on the inside from the top. Thanks Eric! You're the best thing that's happened to me during Covid!
Haha love to hear it, Nick! hope they continue to prove helpful!
Great video Eric. Love the detail in how to set up the drills. Thanks again
Appreciate it, Gary!
Amazing drill. Put the basket in front of my right toe at rhe range and immediately started puring it dead straight. No more hooks at all. Almost unbelievable how quickly it worked. Thanks
Love to hear this! Our pleasure!
Very helpful drills and the science behind the hook was nice. I get it now . Practiced and already seeing improvements. Thanks!
you got it my friend!
just came out of full lockdown here in uk and ive came back with a hook! had 3 driving range sesh's and its getting better but will definitely be trying these drills thanks in advance
Hope it helps!
Great video, Eric! Thanks! Jim
Thanks, Jim!
Nice drills, simple and straight forward.
Appreciate it!
straight to the point and very well explained, going to give this a try!!
Hope it helps, Ricky!
Your always helpful Eric ,.. of course there are so many variables in a golf swing , especially at my age, it’s like trying to learn to walk for the first time ..
:) Thanks for being here with us Steve!
Great tips. Going to try it. Struggling in so much lately with hooks. Praying this works. Thank for drills
Hey Brian!
It will definitely help...the only caveat is your club face...if you have something making it way too closed...make sure grip is neutral
Eric Cogorno Golf Thanks for the tip Eric. I will finally get out tomorrow to try to institute the tips from the video. Certainly should help. Don’t know how I developed a hook in the first place.
awesome Eric, going to try this. I seem to fight a straight pull with my irons but fight hooks with woods (mostly fairway woods) going to give this a try
Good luck!
FORE! at 9:25
Great tips. Will definitely try these ASAP!
:)
Best stuff I have ever seen on correcting a hook.
Thanks, Bruce!
Great video man
Appreciate it!
Great drills! My daughter is hitting some inside to out snapper smother hooks and this will work perfect!
Thanks, Tim! Hope it helps!
Another good lesson.
Thank you sir
I was fighting the massive hook off the tee with driver, and I will say, this absolutely straightened things out significantly! It took a bit of adjusting, though, and the first few shots went thin, but things are certainly looking better! Thanks Eric!
Love to hear it! My pleasure my friend!
yeah me too, when i concentrate on the fade swing path, i hit some thin (aggravating). i hope to take these drills to the range soon. my irons are 1 degree upright, i am probably going back to neutral
Thank you 👍
Our pleasure Kevin!
I haven't tried this yet, but seems to be the best I've seen online so far to fix it. Everything else is like open your hips this degrees and your chest this feces, and your grip this way and you club this angle.
This will def help fix the hook!
Great drill I've practiced this for a couple of days now whilst in my garden, got my swing path and club face back on plane.
Today's round went really well other than parr 3s short distance everything went left?any other shot 8 iron down to 3 iron all nice and straight?
still its a work in progress and thanks for the drill.
Glad to hear that, Gary! Steps in the right direction my friend!
Really great review Eric of a number of causes of a hook. Too many seem to focus purely on (strong) grip factor. Like the fact you covered grip, ball position and club path
Thanks, Melvyn! For sure....could be several pieces that could lead to it wanted to make sure I went over them :)
@@CogornoGolf ooooooooooooooooooooooo

whenever my swing is off I just check out your UA-cam for the fix ! I’m hitting low hooks with my 3wood and need to fix it ASAP
Appreciate your support Steven!

Wow, just discovered this. My beautiful draw has turned to a duck hook that made me quit the game. I never understood the path until now. I thought it was the opposite, closed face and pulling across body after contact, not pushing out from the inside swing path. Mind Blown! Going to range tomorrow!
Hope it helps, Pete!
Great teaching video, thank you
Appreciate it
@@CogornoGolf I can’t believe you responded. I used the video to turn my hook into pull fades. It helped me got the club out from behind me.
Love it! These drills helped me when I was playing more as well. Glad to hear that-all the best!
I'm a 6 handicap and struggle with duck hooks with my 3W & 17*Hybrid from time to time. The drill with the basket is legit. It straightened me out & even gave me a bit of a fade for the first time ever.
Excellent! Glad to hear that!
I’m Hooking every Club from the Driver to my Wedges, Used to hit an Cut and once in an While an Slice, Now total Opposite with an Nuetral Grip trail hand on Top
Would have to see your swing to say for sure Daryl.....something making face closed to path and or path to far in to out
www.cogornogolf.com/freetrial if you don't get it sorted
all of a sudden i’m hooking my hybrids badly so this lil dose of the swing doctor will be my medicine asap
solid looking swing eric
Thank you!
Thanks. I tried to fix my hook by trying to follow through to the right field resulting in a more drastic hook. Will try your advice next time I golf.
You got it!
Yes...you would want more of the opposite .....to left field (if you are a right hander)
IF that doesn't get rid of your hook you have to look at WHY the club face is too closed to path and correct that (could be grip, wrist angles, arm rotation, etc)
Excellent stuff Eric. As you know, the student has to actually hit balls to make these path changes stick. My swing reflection (glass/mirror) looks fine, but the act of hitting a ball can create a hypnotic affect. These props provide an instant reality check. Thank you!
100%
This was awesome! Thanks Eric. Just played my first round of the year and I was hooking every club in the bag. I reverted back to my old lame grip and didn't even notice, I just kept drinking more beer and surprisingly that didn't fix it. I have no interest in going back to the dark days of hitting hooks, I will be using these drills(ok, probably with some beer as well) this spring for sure.
A little beer....a few drills....you're good to go :)
ME TOO! i will be using these drills very soon.
Nice Vid....really trying to fix this hook!! Can you do the same video but use the driver with some drills.
You can do same drills wit driver, yup
These should also helpful the hook:
ua-cam.com/video/HMWq-WZR-0k/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/DHDS1GlPxLg/v-deo.html
going to give this drill a try ...I had started keeping my right elbow tucked very close to my body for better ball striking consistency with my irons , but now find I have developed a draw or hook on most every shot and can't seem to break it .....also an even more severe snap hook with my driver...........thanks for the help!!!
Hope it helps Gary! Thanks for watching!
Awesome drills...more 🐦 now... thanks
Thank you! Our pleasure!
Eric - been fighting a pull hook for a while. This drill is simply amazing. Quick question - what club are you using in this video? Can you do this drill with all clubs?
Thanks, Tom! Hope it helps solve the issue!
Usually I use a 9 or 8 iron when hitting for videos (no specific reason, but habit)
You can use with any club, yup!
Great video man. I have a nasty hook and finally understand why. Thx brother
Thanks, man! Hope it helps straighten that out!
Eric Cogorno Golf , it helped tremendously. I went from 100% hooks to about 10% , and was hitting some baby fades with my driver. I think if I continue to do what you said and stop gripping the club so hard I’ll completely eliminate it
Love it!
9 min 28 seconds he almost gets killed by a rogue drive! Someone driving by him misses and the ball comes flying by! Doesn't phase him!
:)
@@CogornoGolfmust have been a duck hook!
Great content as usual, however when I feel as though im coming over the top I just starting shanking the ball?
Thanks!
Would have to see your swing to give you specific advice....but without seeing it I would suggest focusing on the follow through (3rd station) and exiting more to the left. See how that goes.
If you path is too far right you either have to change it at beginning of downswing or follow through
Thanks for the tips! My miss is either a snap hook or I have a hard time getting the ball in the air. Could both of these be because my swing is too inside/out?
For sure.....without seeing I would guess your clubface is very shut as well.
Great Video! But just curious. That ball that comes flying in at 9:28. Was that someone else's hook?
:) Thanks Frank!!
My 15 year old son all of the sudden hooks everything. Yesterday was a frustrating day for him. Gonna take him to the range and try these drills out today. Thanks for posting this.
Hope it helps....have to see if why
1. The club face is too closed or
2. The club path is too far inside out
ua-cam.com/video/DHDS1GlPxLg/v-deo.html
@@CogornoGolf I’ll try to video his swing and look into signing up for an evaluation with Thanks Eric
Can't wait to go to the range to try this...does this same drill work for a driver? I dont hook my irons at all but hook my driver and woods very bad sometimes...
Excellent!
Yup!
good stuff. almost got drilled at about 9:30 mark
Thank you Chad!
This bloke is one of the best
Thanks so much, Paul!
9:27 What's up with that? lol Eric, great video! I've never had an issue with hooking until recently with my driver. Realized I was positioned way right, holding too strong of a grip and trying to come in way too shallow. Thanks bud!
Lol someone hitting next to us hit off the end of the club.....I was in the zone :)
@@CogornoGolf That was almost a "holy shit" moment though! ha ha ha.
What's the proper basket position when using the first version of the drill for a driver/fairway wood? Thanks!
Hey Jake!
Same position relative to the shaft.
Just under the angle of the shaft when bucket about 1/2 between foot and ball
Great drills, already had a much better range session using one of these with my irons. Would you adjust the positions of the the range bucket at all when doing the drill with driver and 3 wood?
Have to LOWER as the shaft angle with the longer clubs gets lower.
@@CogornoGolf thanks for the response! So lower the angle of the alignment stick that's in the bucket, but keep the bucket in the same place in relation to my right foot? Really appreciate the response and drills, with the winter months kicking in, range practice is where it's at right now! 👍😂
Hard for me to fully explain with details here in text without pictures....you'll figure it out!
Very good Eric. So how do you keep the club more out in front & also keep the right elbow close to body on downswing?
Hey Peter
How would you think you do it?
@@CogornoGolf I guess it makes sense now…da
Chris..if one has no bucket..can I use two alignment rods in the gtound staggered, one between feet line and ball and one between ball line and a few inches above it and both same angle as the club I am hitting?
Yep
Okay to do same set up for driver? Thanks!!
Yes
What do you recommend for someone who usually struggles with over the top/steep and that benefits from a more inside out feeling, but ultimately has snap hooks with the driver while the iron game is improving? So pretty much the inside out feeling benefits the irons but doesn’t work for the driver if that makes sense
Hey Alexander!
At that level of detail I would really have to see your swing videos to see whats going on...could be too many reasons for me to give general advice.
Find a good coach or sign up at www.cogornogolf.com so I can help!
Hi Eric. Can u use those drills for driver too ? Thanks enjoy the videos
Yes, all clubs! Appreciate your support!
@CogornoGolf Great as l love the drill. I have a in to out swing which gets a bit too much a time. Definitely helps to stop it. Keep up the great work 👍
Hi Eric ,great video will these drills help me when I try to hit a fade with my driver I hit a pull hook or snap hook and irons get smothered left most of the time thanks Paul
They might...sounds like you have a clubface issue though...too closed
Eric Cogorno Golf HI Eric thanks for the reply would that be a grip issue for it to be to closed ? Thanks Paul
Could be grip, could be wrist conditions
My path is not too much inside and I’ve weakened both hands and still fight a hook. Any drills to lower hyperactive hands? Thanks very much
Hey! For sure....but I would really need to see your swing to confirm what's really going on without guessing too much. Send vids to www.cogornogolf.com and we can solve that!
Thanks Eric. Where do you teach?
All online at www.cogornogolf.com as of now
Great drills man....my miss is a hook/ pull...I ended up going to a mid size grip on irons + Jumbo grip on my driver & weakened my grip.... my hands are not big by any means, but the fatter grip allowed me to weaken my grip yet feel much more control then when using a standard grip...I am now alot less wristy!! Also changed my path to outside/ in...What do you think? It's working for me.... what are your thoughts on using thicker grips?
Love it if it works...with all things GRIP and CLUB FITTING related......what is "supposed" to happen on paper doesn't really matter and doesnt always hold true.
Find what works and keep working it!
How does this apply to a driver or a fairwaywood?
Great content👏
Thanks! Same ideas!
@@CogornoGolf I only hook driver-irons are straight. I feel like and try to do same swing, but different result with driver.
Will try your ideas, my draw has turned into an uncontrollable hook, thanks
Hope it helps!
I just hit irons thinking Ryan Moore to try to keep my backswing from so inside
Ever since I bought clubs with smaller head and it’s a stiff shaft as opposed to my old regular shaft, I’m hooking all of a sudden. Why?
Hey!
I do not know...
I would need to see your swing to say for sure...
What about the snap hook that starts straight and goes way left? No body rotation?
could be CK....would need to see your swing.
Face too closed to path for sure (assuming centered contact)
Struggling with a hook for ages. Watched multiple videos, will see if this one works.
As you likely know...you have to check
1. Make sure club face isn't too closed to the path.
-If it is...why?
-Grip, wrist angles, arm rotation would be where to start.
-also make sure face isn't too closed already at setup
2. Path too far from inside out
Eric, I grew up learning the golf swing from the old " 9 ball flight rules". I was always taught that swing path determined ball flight path (left, right of target line) , and club face determined ball flight pattern (draw, straight, fade). With the new technology that is availble today to "see" what is really happening I was shocked to learn that club face angles (closed=left flight/ open =right path) determines starting path 75-90% of the time. Could you do some videos in regards to the new 9 ball flight patterns ? I remember back in 80s and 90s I would set up with what some may consider a open face at address..............................would play the niceiest draw pattern imaginable.
Will see if it comes up on the list! Good idea!
Eric..does a closed club face happen from yanking the club inside on the backswing? And your first work station remedy that?
Closed club face in takeaway could be from several factors
1 Strong grip
2. Lead wrist flexed/unhinged
3. Counter arm rotation
This station would help an inside takeaway for sure----the club face MAYBE depends why you did it
Eric appreciate your detailed responses which shows you are truly passionate about the game..
If you hook irons. Do these drills. You’re stuck and swinging too much inside out. The drills will give you the feeling of getting unstuck. And weaken your grip if it too strong.
Yep!
Eric,
When I try this, I sometimes shank it. I assume I am over exaggerating the out to in?
COULD be ....I would have to see on video to say for sure. You may have the station set up TOO difficult....getting the club head OUTSIDE the ball target line too much
Make the stick a bit EASIER and put a box outside the ball like this just to make sure club head arc is good
ua-cam.com/video/DWB0Y-mjsl8/v-deo.html
Can you do this with driver?
Yep!
" Why is your club face closed ? ,, I have no idea " ,,,, well for the most part that basically sums this up does it not ?
:)
My natural shot is a 10 yard "hook" with driver. Guess that's really a draw, but a hook isn't an issue unless it's more than 15 yards.
Yup 10 yards no prob
If you had a student come that worked hard for years to try to reverse a slice and now they are hooking the ball, would that change any of the drills/suggestions? Thanks!
Hey there! I think the concepts/drills in this video would remain the same.
We just need to find middle now👍
@@CogornoGolf Thanks for the quick reply!
How do I fix my hook if I’m not swinging in to out. Like the ball starts left and then hooks?
Sounds like your club face is too closed.
Have to find out why.
Could be as simple as your grip is turned too strong. Could be wrist angles, release, etc.
Would need to see your swing on video to say for sure
Get Lesson on curing hook. Only question for clarification, you explained ball position forward with Irons. What is the correct forward ball position with the driver to help eliminate the Hook or Left side of the fairway?
Driver left armpit/shoulder territory...same theories apply as irons.
Why am I struggeling with hooks (and Bad strikes) only with long Irons, hybrids and woods? Wedges and Short irons work completely different.
Hey Sebastian!
I do not know.
I would need to see a video of your swing.
Join www.cogornogolf.com so you can send us your swings and we can fix it if you dont get it sorted
When I try this it's starts well then eventually I start shanking....then I spaz out and just starting hitting drivers and back to square 1😢😢
If you fight a hook and a station behind lead to shanks then use the station in front with the bucket and stick that you have to go under and left of
Anyone c the golf ball that nearly hit him at 9:28? It went to the left of him .
:)
Going to give these a go. The hook is killing my game to the point where I am contemplating giving the game up. Thanks Eric! ⛳🏌️👍🏼
Our pleasure! Let us know if this one helps!
