  • As water temperatures drop during the fall period muskellunge behaviors change. In many systems musky forage preference shifts to pelagic species and their metabolism also experiences a change. Muskies are certainly feeding as temperatures drop from the 40's into the 30's before freeze-up but, the summer run-and-gun tactics no longer provide anglers with the same "action" they experienced during the summer. As waters cool, speed becomes a very important tactical issue that muskie anglers must navigate in order to achieve success.
In this fall informational video I address the question of speed with regard to casting and what this looks like. Many videos and seminars discuss "slower speeds" but they do not show a comparison between summer retrieval and fall retrieval speeds. Hopefully this casting demonstration will provide you with some new insights into what speed might help you to catch more fish during the fall period.

Yep! You got it Chas, just take it easy... I usually get a coupla row troll days in just before gun season on the chain. When I started that didn't even use a locator. I'd rig a DepthRaider on the out side and a ShallowRaider on the inside. I'd just row until the DR started digging bottom and ease out a bit just till it was free. Probably 80+% came on the SR but the DR put me in the strike zone without any electronics. Best day was a five fish 2 hours. Nothing giant but still, a boatload of fun!
I sit in the boat, give the oars a stroke, let it glide a bit and give it another easy stroke. Light a nice cigar, have a sip of something lightly medicinal, enjoy the ride. Very, very effective. Mighta missed a PB except I didn't know how to get hooks while rowing. Pat Strutz @ Guides Choice (many years ago) got me onto the program and I haven't missed or lost a fish since.

Keep casting! Keep going! Tom Gelb went 28 days straight with no Muskies before he caught one of the biggest Muskies to EVER come out of the waters of Vilas / Oneida county in the last 50+ years.

GREAT TIP nice demo good to see what "slow it down" means. Reminds me of the creator of the slammer and his "boat side rise" instead of a figure eight. but I do love me a big of a figure 8 even at the end of the rise. Thank you for the timely info Time to hit the water and boat some skis. Keep em coming. Cast em till the bounce

Is there a temperature ranger where you would use jointed, vs the solid? At what point do you abandon the weeds? I saw you sunday, i was going to stop and say hello but didn't want to interrupt. I was in the skeeter tiller

Beautiful boat dude! Thanks Jim. Straight vs. jointed vs. rattles vs. none is all just trial and error in my experience. Some years they want a specific color etc. I just test until I find what they want!

I thought muskies are deep at that water temp? Are you fishing over deep water, just with a shallow presentation? Thanks. Good video!

Mark, they are shallow all year - even with water temps in the mid 30’s. This has been my experience thus far. Yes - maybe fish out deep too! Really varies quite a bit until the Cisco movement really takes hold.

Biggest issue i have is getting hung up when fishing really slow. What tips would you give for fishing slow when hangups are common.
