I haven't been able to get I to any of the BNL albums since Steven left. His songwriting was what elevated the band from something average to some fantastic. The way he could blend seriousness and humour within a couple of lines is something special. Steven's solo stuff is unfortunately severely underrated and underappreciated. He has released several songs which are as good as anything put out by BNL.
I totally agree, But I mean, that said. All in Good Time was seriously good. Everything past that has felt lacking in some way. There have been moments here and there where BnL still does amazing work, but as time goes by without Paige, those moments feel fewer and further between. I got the sense that Paige had to grapple with serious issues, and when you combined that with the rest of the band, it created something that really reflected the human condition.
I listened to the Detour de Force album for the first time about 2 yrs ago and really like that album. To me that album reminds me of when Steven was in the band. Ive listened to it several times since, along with their old stuff still.
Paul McCartney said that these two had the best harmonies he’s ever heard. I hope they give the past the boot and see what kind of future could happen. Life is too short to let talent die.
I was a teen during the early BNL times, and to hear their sound again now, with new material, their take on music now would be the best thing for this 38 year old's soul. I would love it.
Tom, this is an amazing interview. The way it is edited as though they are both there at the same time...the way you showed their connection even though they've been apart...really, really well done. I'm impressed. You did a fantastic job. I've always loved this band and you did a fantastic job bringing them back together for their fans. Thank you.
Their songs were great but the harmony they had was beyond words. Without those two voices it has never been the same. Can't wait to see them tonight :)
They will ALWAYS be one of my favorite bands and the soundtrack of my adolescence. I'm so glad they reconciled for their induction - it wouldn't have been the same without Steven.
For a lot of people the Hip was their Canadian band, for others like me it was BNL. Just the wit and fun in their songs did it for me. Even if it's for only one night I can't wait to see them together again
It doesn't appear there's enough animosity to prevent a reunion. The guys are 50ish now and still have the chops to do a proper tour. They would RAKE in the $$$$. Do it for the fans!
Barenaked ladies were there for me through happy times, sad times, and some very dark times. I saw them several times with Steven in the band and once without. I will always love them however when I saw them without Steven, it felt like something was missing. It reminded me of being in grade 9 (pardon the coincidence) and you are dancing with a girl you have liked for a long time....at the end of the dance....you get a peck on the cheek. It was pretty good....but you were left wanting for more. I am going to enjoy the evening but know that I am going to experience that same feeling all over again.
Such a great split interview and funny how even after all that time apart Steve and Ed are basically on the same wavelength, hard not to get nostalgic and hope for a reunion and some new material from the band reformed.
Your interviews are so enjoyable and positive. You don’t dig for the lows, but rather keep the session so focussed on the success of the band. Well done sir! I too listened, on repeat, the Bare Nakeds. Loved that time in my life.
I met the original BNL before they got big and they were really nice, and having met and having conversations with Ed, Steven and Tyler over the years, can attest to how nice they still are.
Such precious memories surrounding BNL. My kids first "adult" concert. So sad when Steven left... Happy they are getting the recognition they deserve..
I hope this leads to good things. I don’t expect them to immediately reconcile. But hopefully it leads to a gradual thaw that eventually turns into something amazing.
Great interview. That had potential to be really difficult get together. Glad to hear Ed reached out before hand to ease the tension. Their bathroom sessions were always fun to watch and listen to.
I am truly in tears here. I cannot say I am fan of these guys, but I can appreciate and respect them and their work and how far they have come and how their meager start turned into huge success. I find some of their songs very catchy. I do have alot of love and admiration for them, again even though I am not much of fan. I am thrilled they be reuniting at the Junos and I for sure will have tears streaming down my face. These guys all belong together..and with time and distance and age, and reflection maybe something will come out of this..but also we don't know all that went on, so maybe it was best for them to do their own thing, but for sure Steven is missed, it is not the same without him..
My first band i really got into as a kid back in the early 90s. Prolly my favorite band if i had to pick one of all the music i listen to. The albums with Steven I could listen to everyday
The line in Enid, took me 2 years to get over the loss, is one of the sweetest harmonies to effect my soul, BNL make Canda great again, they deserve hall of fame 4 damn sure
Seeing them perform is amazing, the on-stage chemistry was like they'd never stopped playing together! I would love to see them reunite, even if only a limited basis, but I'm not going to hold my breath. Still, brought back some VERY good memories, and I would LOVE to see them perform again together. Thank you, BNL, you were part of the soundtrack of my life, and I can't thank you enough for the music you created.
Great interviews, superb editing - and such a wonderful thing to get BNL on stage together again. Sure, BNL has of course been BNL without Steve - just not the same BNL that I feel in love with. No matter if this was truly a reunion or not, I applaud Ed and the band for letting Steve in - and I applaud Steve for going through with it. I am well aware of the "like a marriage" effect, I've lived through it myself and know that it can hurt. But this was just wonderful to see and hear - and as a longtime fan, I can just bow and thank you all.
im so excited to see steven page and barenaked ladies perform at junos. ill be there on the floor. hope to meet some famous faces. get autographs and pics maybe. bnl has been awesome since i first heard them in 1991 lovers in a dangerous time. i got all their stuff on lp, cd and cassette (yes tape) i got their yellow tape (my 2nd copy). congrats to bnl. and withouth page they are doing fantastic. i have seen them live 4 times (2001, 2007, 2015 and 2017). so i guess this will be the 5th time :) cheers mike from coquitlam canada
They are still great without page, but everyone knows. They are a little less great without him. Just like Pages solo albums are great! He’s not the same without the band though at the end of the day.
Best two memories of BNL: Before a concert at Christmas, they came out and signed autographs with the audience (who else does that?!) and at World AIDS Conference in Toronto, they sang their hearts out even though through various events at the conference they got started late. Both times they were amazing and gave every ounce of energy to their audience. Thanks BNL!
Great band and congrats on a great interview…. Just saw BNL in S Florida 2 nights ago…. Love all the songs and it was a great show but MAN I wish they’d get back together. Steve and Ed made musical magic
wow such professionnalisme from Steven and ed and such a amazing respect for both of them the way they fix there difference. After all yes there been together for more than 30 years. You can not hide the success the group as in or out media. That prove that they are still human. From what I just see at the juno and the reaction of the fans well i lift my hat to the group on a job well done and hopefully to see you back again like all the fan over the world. Don't forget just have fun to do a job that you love so much it's not easy these day's and you change the lives of a lot of people by telling everything is not perfect.... thanks you bnl
It's not going to happen. Pretty clear that Ed doesn't want to do this at all, and from what I've heard in interviews I don't think Tyler's all that enthusiastic about it either. Steven doesn't want to be in the band full-time but it sounds like he'd be open to doing the occasional one-off.
Brian Smith I haven't got that feeling from Ed and Tyler. Where did you see those interviews? I think Steven and Kevin are still friendly, but I always thought that Kevin's creative input (children's album, his own songs, etc.) was where the "creative differences" came from.
TovaShai Great reply. I am glad that you went that in-depth. I think what mad me confused in my opinion of Ed was how he seemed to be uncomfortable talking about playing with Steven in this interview where Steven seemed comfortable in wanting to play with them.
I still remember them getting discovered in the much music booth and getting band from concerts because of there name :) I use to listen to them when first came out on my bus ride from Vancouver to Osoyoos to visit grandma during summer holidays
Been to 28 shows from 96 until just before silverball dropped. Always had a great experience. As life happens and tickets become more expensive I just don't go see them live anymore. Happy to finally see them get this as they deserve it. While the band without page is not bad it's just a different sound. Would love for Steve to come back, but I'll still buy their music either way.
No pressure, just go out and perform. Whether you stick it out for a few shows or leave us with one, I'm just happy that a band that made great music is giving me a tiny bit of my adolescence back.
Ahw that's super I hope they get back together. It's all about energy, frequency and vibration, and those two do great things together. Like chemistry.
Congrats BNL. I'm 60+ yrs and grew up in The Beatles era. BNL is one of my favorite bands of all those years. Steve is sort of like what Benny Hill would have been like if he could sing. I also really enjoyed seeing Ed work with Chris Hadfield. Hoping for more great stuff in the future.
Not sure why BNL affects me so much. They just have this ability to reach into the soul. That's why they are so beloved far and wide. I have mixed feelings with all of this. Yes I'm so excited for them and for the possibility of a joint performance but it drudges up 10 years of feelings of loss over the break up. As a long time loyal fan from about 1997, I've been to dozens of concerts and have bought everything pre and post Steve (and of Steve's). The band is always awesome but they are somehow missing a key ingredient no matter how you slice it. Like you made a dish and forgot to add something important to the recipe. It may look like the dish but something is just not there. I listen to each of them interviewed separately here and it's nice, polished almost, but it reminds me of what could have been, both in making music together and performances I've seen as a foursome. 10 years! Lost. On one hand do I think they will get back together and catch up and make new albums to dazzle me? It's probably a tall order, but to witness them perform the classics together regularly (Jane, Old Apartment, everything from Stunt!) that would be worth it all! Even if they didn't make a single new song together going forward. That's probably selfish and unrealistic to say all this. After all, they have their own stories and reasons for splitting that we may never truly learn but the BNL is not just theirs anymore. It part of all of us who love them dearly and we have a stake in seeing them back together. Let's not let any more wasted time go by. 143 BNL!
Did you write this for me? I feel I could have written this exact comment. BNL has been with me (or I've been with them?) since their infancy and, I'm not sure why they affect me so much and why their break up pulled at my heartstrings as much as it did. A lot of their music followed me through my earlier years, and I can pinpoint exact places I was/points in my life where I was when their songs were played. I saw them so many times, but I stopped listening when they broke up. Not because I was upset, but because Steven Page's voice is quintessential BNL. They all have amazing voices and are fantastic in their own right, but Steven Page's voice provided the angelic voice that I fell in love with. Now I'm crying.
You know I never quite figured out or pieced together why they really broke up. 'You run away' seemed to pin it on Steven but I'm just not sure anymore. If he had issues, why didn't they do enough support him and stick together? Isn't that what brothers do? I've heard each (or both) say in interviews that this was like a marriage and divorce, but if your loved one is struggling, and it's worth saving then you do the work. After all, there are the kids (fans) to think of! Sometimes I read these long winded comments I make on BNL videos and say WTF!? Why do I go through the trouble of expressing my thoughts on these guys? But as we've all said, BNL is not just another band to us. They've touched us in some great way and maybe it's just therapy for fans. I agree they will probably not reunite. At least not like what we knew. That's painful since to fans it's a simple formula and to the band it's a complex one.
This was a great band, very creative both musically and lyrically.Never quite the same since Steven Page left.I believe they should have been even bigger.
Such a great interview! I realize that BNL and Page have gone separate ways, but it will be so good to see them together on stage again. Both BNL and Page are better as performers when they are together. Congrats to everyone!
This is why I have so much damn respect for this band. They've all got good heads on their shoulders. And despite such an unfortunate setback, they seem to have all handed the situation like adults. There's no ego, no drama, they clearly have empathy for one another even if they can't always coexist together.
You’ve posited an unfair analogy that does not do Steven any favors, as John was the worst Beatle (not to mention the worst human of the four) by a country mile and that’s 📠
Thomas Therriault Where I'm from in St. John's, NL, there's a great local spot called Fred's Records, and they sell all kinds of CDs and vinyls. But it's a shame that HMV went the way of the dodo.
For me Steven Page is 50% of what made the band (or what made the band GREAT). Ed was 35% and the other three, 5% each. Again, for ME! Never cared much for what BNL did after Steven left, it didn’t speak it me anymore. 🤷🏻♂️ Page put the BARENAKED in Barenaked Ladies.
Love the band. Just not the same without Steve. Their voices are a perfect match for harmony. So glad to finally see them back on stage together. You can induct the ladies without Steve. Most of their hits he either sang, or sang a good part of.
Am I the only one who thinks that the conversations sound like a divorced couple who is only going to get together for the kids and really can't stand to be in the room with each other for any other reason?
Now why, amongst all these sweet memories of good times long since past, would you go and sully our nostalgia by mentioning a wretched thing like The Big Bang Theory? :/
Shame he couldn't put the music ahead of a drug addiction. Page's solo work hasn't held a candle to it, yet the other members managed to stick together and release two solid albums...says it all really. Steve needs Ed just as much as BNL needs Steve. Funny how it all works out.
@@ToxicKlay that’s weird because while I have followed and enjoyed Steve’s solo work, I can’t name a single post-Steve BNL song (let alone the name of an album!) other than the Big Bang Theory theme song. It’s almost like there’s no clear definitive story about what actually went down amongst the band members and the fanbase has multiple, often opposing or contradictory opinions on all of their output ever since the split 🤔 Put simply: I listen to Steve without Ed (and Jim and Kevin and Tyler, all whom you have forgotten to mention, just as most people forget to do) but I do not ever listen to Ed & Co. without Steve. Why would I or anyone do that? Even the thought I’m having just now, imagining Ed singing Break Your Heart, is making me viscerally upset, like I am legit mad and sad about this, thanks a lot ;/"
"Taking song craft seriously but not taking ourselves seriously." So perfectly descriptive.
Another band had a similar philosophy: Beastie Boys.
Phish has a similar philosophy too!
This is how an interview is conducted. Very well done. Very good.
This just goes to show EVEN band break ups in Canada are super polite!
I haven't been able to get I to any of the BNL albums since Steven left. His songwriting was what elevated the band from something average to some fantastic. The way he could blend seriousness and humour within a couple of lines is something special.

This interview was almost like a therapy session
I was a fan until 2009! The other night at the Juno's I was a fan again 👍
Paul McCartney said that these two had the best harmonies he’s ever heard.
I hope they give the past the boot and see what kind of future could happen. Life is too short to let talent die.
Mike Heath hell yeah
McCartney has also said that about The Everly Brothers, also Simon & Garfunkel.
I think it depends who he has listened to prior to the interview.
I was a teen during the early BNL times, and to hear their sound again now, with new material, their take on music now would be the best thing for this 38 year old's soul. I would love it.
@@CB-xr1eg I'd settle for Paul McCartney saying I had the sixth best-tied shoes he'd ever seen.

I totally 100% agree. This interviewer is awesome.
phreddcatt I totally agree.
no thats poor, dont edit it as if they were in the same room typical cbc editing
Tom's interviews with the guys are always my favorite 💕
Their songs were great but the harmony they had was beyond words. Without those two voices it has never been the same. Can't wait to see them tonight :)
This interview breaks my heart

Like that night in Toronto?
It doesn't appear there's enough animosity to prevent a reunion. The guys are 50ish now and still have the chops to do a proper tour. They would RAKE in the $$$$. Do it for the fans!
These guys were the soul of the 90s. Everything that was warm and hopeful about that era comes flowing back whenever I play my BNL discs.
I can’t get used to Jim, Kevin, and Tyler filling in for Steve. They’re all good singers but Steve was part of what made BNL who they were.
Barenaked ladies were there for me through happy times, sad times, and some very dark times. I saw them several times with Steven in the band and once without. I will always love them however when I saw them without Steven, it felt like something was missing.
TovaShai, good analysis! I understand it goes deep and it is what it is but hopefully they've grown enough to move forward together. We can only hope!
I really want to see this reunion performance! I miss them so much. Those old videos were hilarious.
Thanks for doing this for us and yourselves. I had the yellow tape...
*Gordon was released in 1992, not 1994. :)
"Gordon" was NOT released in 1994; I drove into Toronto in 1992 for a U2 concert, with my brother and his 2 friends wearing out the CD.
Please wake up. You belong together. Canada loves you. Your owe it to your fans and there are millions of us. Please, we need some good in this world.
Well, we'll always have their reunion performance - ua-cam.com/video/JwjdvgPULRc/v-deo.html
They don’t owe us a damn thing. If anything, we owe them. What shape that would take, however, is beyond me.
Happy 30th Anniversary!
They threw away an opportunity to be around each other as friends for a decade. Sad to lose that much time with a good buddy.
This is why I have so much damn respect for this band. They've all got good heads on their shoulders. And despite such an unfortunate setback, they seem to have all handed the situation like adults. There's no ego, no drama, they clearly have empathy for one another even if they can't always coexist together.
Why am I crying
Oh my god Speakers Corner.....I feel so old and so Canadian.
It's been like watching the Beatles tour without John. BNL isn't BNL without Steve.
Yeah, they should put their egos aside, hash it out with a counsellor if need be, get back to work and get back to having fun. Life's too short.
nah man, bnl is fine. steve's a pretentious drug addict
@@OMGWTFLOLSMH if I had to guess, I think they’d need counsel to hash this out, way more than they’d need a counselor, if you get my meaning…
You’ve posited an unfair analogy that does not do Steven any favors, as John was the worst Beatle (not to mention the worst human of the four) by a country mile and that’s 📠
I never thought we'd get to a point where people would be like, "Remember HMV?"; because *it doesn't exist anymore.*
DaShirtBoy - Sam The Record Man and the like, I can't even remember the name of the other places to buy records.
Thomas Therriault Where I'm from in St. John's, NL, there's a great local spot called Fred's Records, and they sell all kinds of CDs and vinyls. But it's a shame that HMV went the way of the dodo.
Sunrise on Yonge
I think we all want to know.
Who sprung for the dollar? To do that Speaker's Corner video.
I'll guess it was Tyler. The drummer.
A dollar was a lot back in 1990. It was like, five dollars
@@balthasardenner5216 doing the math here… carry the one… that’s nearly two and a half toonies!
'Gordon' wasn't released in 1994. :)
Aaron Elya …came here for that. That part really threw me off. I know right where I was in 1992!
They shouldn’t have continued on under the BNL banner after kicking Steven out. I propose a new name - NNL: Nearly Nude Ladies.
I saw BNL about 10 years and you would never sense any discord within the band, Page had the audience eating out of the palm of his hand
Steven was given the boot in 2008, just fyi. I know, time flies, tell me about it 🫤
This is the way Canadian bands break out ... the songs that are on the back burner always do great .
Love the band. Just not the same without Steve. Their voices are a perfect match for harmony. So glad to finally see them back on stage together. You can induct the ladies without Steve. Most of their hits he either sang, or sang a good part of.
He also wrote them!
I got all misty eyed...
This is awesome news. I hope oasis is watching this 🤔
Oh my stars and heavens, my sweet, sweet summer child - the Gallagher brothers sharing a stage again? In this lifetime? Dream on!
Am I the only one who thinks that the conversations sound like a divorced couple who is only going to get together for the kids and really can't stand to be in the room with each other for any other reason?
Love all you guys💋👍
That was an amazing show. Both the BNL, and the Junos in general. I look forward to the stream next year.
Lol- I bought the Sandwich cassette from the band at a concert at the university of Saskatchewan student union bar in 1992!
I really wish Ed would put the past in the past and at least do a reunion tour with Page.
GOOD INTERVIEW
Forgot to bring up the fact that they did the opening for Big Bang Theory. An iconic American Sitcom
Now why, amongst all these sweet memories of good times long since past, would you go and sully our nostalgia by mentioning a wretched thing like The Big Bang Theory? :/
WAIT A DAMN MINUTE!!!!!!!!! ED COULD PLAY "FLY BY NIGHT" ON GUITAR IN THE 4TH GRADE?????????!!!!!!!!!
I know, right? He can barely play his own songs as an adult!
Never say never and sometimes it is good to be apart for a while and better when you make up in this case make music together again
I'd love to see the 5 do a Post Covid tour , if we ever get Post Covid.
awesome
anyone know if both are playing in the Barenaked Ladies current tour?
Page was the guy in this band by a mile. His songs were the best by far.
It’s almost like there’s no clear definitive story about what actually went down amongst the band members and the fanbase has multiple, often opposing or contradictory opinions on all of their output ever since the split 🤔
Put simply: I listen to Steve without Ed (and Jim and Kevin and Tyler, all whom you have forgotten to mention, just as most people forget to do) but I do not ever listen to Ed & Co. without Steve. Why would I or anyone do that? Even the thought I’m having just now, imagining Ed singing Break Your Heart, is making me viscerally upset, like I am legit mad and sad about this, thanks a lot ;/"
How can I watch the awards in the states?
junoawards.ca/juno-tv/
Bringing back Steve only for a night isn’t good enough. They should make a petition titled “Bring Back Steve”.
Always better live!!
ALWAYS!
