  • Demo of the Electric Blues Box Guitar Kit I bought from Hinkler Publishing (via Amazon). It comes with the guitar itself (that requires a bit of simple assembly) a glass slide, CD and beginners guidebook by slide player Nick Bryant. This was only £30 including delivery and I am very impressed with it. I own many standard guitars, but wanted to try out a Cigar Box style axe without spending a lot of money, in case I didn't like it. I don’t have much experience playing slide either, but this kit was so simple and easy to follow, that for the money, it is excellent for anyone wanting to get to playing blues guitar.

You can easily replace the bolt at the nut with a thinner one in order to make the action lower on this CBG. Using this CBG with a harmonica really helps as you practice on the harmonica for blues styles, as well. If you are a total novice or beginner, investment in this gets you playing so that if you finally decide to chuck learning to play, you have not spent too much money. They make great gifts for youth and also make for great travel guitars or parlor-type guitars to piddle about with. You can also modify them easily with a better pickup and a volume control, if you wish. Good video. Thanks for sharing. Check out other cigar box bides with players like Justin Johnson and you can get some easy tips to make your playing improve, as well.

I have one of these also. Why would you want to lower the action for slide? It doesn't have any real frets.

Nice video, its a nice intro to playing cigar box guitar and I thought long and hard about ordering one but ultimately I ended up building my own for about 20 bucks US (not sure of the exchange rate)

I'd recommend a glass slide rather than brass. Less metallic and harsh, a more mellow tone.

So, what's with the pickup? It must be a piezo but it doesn't sound like a piezo. Maybe your amp setting were just extra spot on, I don't know. It seems to take overdrive pretty well but piezos tend to get kind of muddy with overdrive. It could also just be a better piezo than I'm used to or something. Or I suppose it could be something else like a microphonic pickup or something I'm not aware of. Anyone know?

A simple microphone, in my opinion. I have one but didn't get inside to be 100% sure.

Thomas Morgan It can be played acoustic. Just for learners it's great. Then once the basics are done, buy a better one for gigging etc

Built in tuner on the amp. It is a bit flat, I know. It's not the greatest at holding pitch, but again for £30 and a bit of fun, it's fine.

Why did you not talk about the kit? What came in it, how do you rate the components, what did it feel like? Also, what didn't you like?. I'm sure people wanted to know. I am actually in the market to get a jut for a 4 string Chicago kit from Gittys. It would have been helpful if you add some comments.

Sorry... This was one of my first ever videos years back!
I've got more confident and experienced at doing them over time. To be honest, I'm not making anything on here other than just for a bit of fun though.
Proper UA-cam reviewers do a much better job.
      Thanks for watching anyway...
As for the kit, it's cheap and cheerful. I moved on pretty quickly to building my own.
This is okay for a beginner, but the pickup is very microphonic, the machine heads lose tuning easily and the strings are not great.
But, it plays okay, it's incredibly well priced and was a good introduction to CB guitars.
      Hope this is helpful...

He said, and it's also in the description, that he bought this from Amazon. So please lift your ass and go there and have a look- or do UA-camrs have to do everything for you?

    I've really been enjoying mine.
Then the slide got dropped onto a tile floor and I had to stop until I could find a replacement.
I've been using a metal utility knife that I picked up at Dollar Tree for a buck held between my left middle and ring fingers with the middle fingertip tucked over the little push down slide that retracts/extends the razor blade from the shaft to use for stability. I got the idea from a video that Shane Speal posted where he talked about some blues men using butter knives and straight razors for their slides. It's been sounding pretty well on the strings, but I am keeping an eye out for a replacement slide. Just haven't run across one in my area, yet (and I just don't feel that comfortable ordering one online as I'd much rather try before I buy to ensure that I get one that actually fits my finger comfortably). I did have to wrap some black electrical tape around that blade slide button thing, though, so that the edges of it wouldn't hurt my index finger. It's been a pretty successful hack and worked in a pinch. :)

Got mine in sale for 19$ steal of a deal at that price. Anything over 30$ for this and I would think twice

I picked mine up for $35 a few years ago. Compared to some other cheap instruments I've picked up over the years, it's been one of the better purchases. Fun to put together (although the grommets required a little extra work to clean out the flash a couple of them had on the ends).
I'm currently gathering tools and materials to see about constructing my own CBGs. Stopped by Hobby Lobby to get ideas for the resonator box, saw some pretty cool examples I could use, then turned them over and saw the prices. Think I'll look elsewhere for the actual materials. Sorry, Hobby Lobby. :)
Really want to try starting out with an electric tenor ukulele. Haven't run across a template for the neck frets, yet. I hit cigarboxnation.com this afternoon, but didn't notice any tenor uke instructions. Hopefully, someone there can steer me in the right direction when I finally have a workspace cleared out and most of the items I'll need on hand.

@@jamesanthony8438 Yeah, personally, I choose not to spend my money at Hobby Lobby. I'm not going to tell you or anyone else what to do but I don't.

The slide needs to be perfectly straight, not tilted that's all, I have one and it plays grest, everyones approach is different
