This 3-String guitar from Joys Guitars was made out of an old empty Ammo Box, and when I took it out of the box I swear I heard it whisper "let's play some 'Gimme Back My Bullets' by @SkynyrdOfficial!"
The combo of this guitar and @HughesandKettneramps Black Spirit 200 floor amp made it easy to dial in some deep & dirty swamp rock tone. I added a Wild Dog Stomp foot pedal for a kick drum sound. I love the melodies in Skynyrd songs, and while the guitar riffs are what made me fall in love with their music, writing these fingerstyle arrangements has really made me appreciate how perfectly the melodies flow over the riffs and how catchy and organic they are. If you dig this arrangement, check out the "Four Walls of Raiford" and "Ballad of Curtis Loew" arrangements I recently posted.

Ain't that the Damn truth..well said my man...well said...

This guy is absolutely one of the most talented guitar players I’ve heard.
This man plays better on 3 strings than most do with 6
Or 12!!
not to shit on his skills or anything but wouldn't it be harder on more strings?
@@gogoletsgoyamadakun with the more strings its easier to play major cords if that makes sense. The less trings the less you can do

I'm 64. I remember when Skynyrd burst out of FL into national prominence. Always loved them and this is my favorite of their tunes. I have NEVER heard this song played with this much soul. Goosebumps at 64. Thank you Justin.
Amen to that my brother...🇨🇦 fan of Skynyrd (64 also ) this tune brought tears to my eyes.
Dam I had check an see if I still had my soul GoodGod
I was numb for 6 months from the tragedy.
good for you fool
Nope buillits only last a year now .u not herd..
I once had the pleasure of being invited to play drums with one of Trinidad’s ‘top’ small steel bands. I was horrified when they turned up with an old dustbin, a washboard and a steel oil drum and honestly thought it was a wind up. The experience was very much like the one I just had watching this dude playing his three string ammo box! Great musicians are just that … simply great 😊
good for you fool
I don’t normally listen to Justin Johnson , but when I do, so do the neighbors.
Rock on 🤘🏼 🎸🇺🇸brother. Well done as always.

Hell yeah brother
Sweet, comment!

Only 3 strings, & made of bullet case?
So my guitar is not the problem?
Lol
I thought the same thing!!

I think we share the same problem.
This is what love sounds like when you play an instrument from your heart.
As a Marine Veteran I approve of that guitar.. never knew a ammo box could make sweet sounds..🇺🇸👍🏽
Kill!
Wonder what .50 would sound like
They should sell them in every PX we have ...
and the song he chose.....epic
This man is one of the most badass and talented guitar players I've ever seen! Hands down
If I had to guess l'd say he spent some time at the crossroads.
Sam Miller Absolutely agree! I wish I could play like this. I’m shocked he isn’t bigger than he is. People like Justin and Charlie Crocket do not get the recognition they deserve.
Agree, 1.000.000 %

Music just flows out of this man's soul effortlessly!
Exactly the word. Effortlessly.
If the hours upon hours of practice I'm sure he must be putting in are "effortless," then I'm just plain ol' lazy...
Sometimes the more talented, the easier it looks.
@@gunslingersymphony5015 I wasn't discounting his hard work; rather I was appreciating it.

The brass portion of a shotgun shell as a volume knob would be a nice touch in this particular case.

I heard Justin first time a few years ago. A friend showed me his music. Absolutely gorgeous, great musician who knows what he loves and shares it with the world , a real artist :) regards from Austria
This man could make a guitar out anything. Ammo box guitar, very nice. Ronnie Van Zant would’ve been proud. Thank you Justin for your music. Always enjoy it and always waiting to see your next guitar build.

I can’t stop listening to it either…
@@michaelhylle I watched it 556 times or maybe 762.
Being a guitar player and a military munitions specialist, I have to have one!! Where are there instructions available for purchase or theft!!??? 😆
After a dinner of sourdough biscuits, red beans and chicken, the way Mr. Johnson plays this song makes me want whiskey, good aged Kentucky whiskey, and a sit down on the front porch with my dogs so I can watch the cars in the valley coming up the gravel road. Yep it does.
You sure do paint a pretty picture, and a tasty one too.
Keep the cars, I'll take witnessing the dust get beat down by the first good rain of the season.
You're mispronouncing it's pronounced bourbon
Just like the county it came from and ironically we shipped it all down to New Orleans and the name of the street after it
Good aged shine.
God: How cool do you want your son to be ?
Justin's father: Yes!!
Brought tears to my eyes, thanks Justin for honoring the guys who died way to young 💔, well Done .
This just sounds so amazing. So pleasing to the ears to listen to you play.
I don't know how you can make 3 strings sound like that, but I'm glad you can. Awesome.
I’m no religious kinda guy, but this guy either sold his soul to the devil or he is a gift from god. His talent and sound are on the highest level possible.
I have it on the highest authority this man done sold his soul to the devil.
Gift from God because he's not world wide and famous. Definitely sub culture famous!

The soundholes are a sweet touch.
This is a very loaded song to play!
How can you such a wonderful sound whith just three strings???....it's your fingers...have magic...are you💫
That's the most badass thing I've ever listened and seen
This guy's amazing how he's not selling out arenas by now is beyond me
I can play guitar, but I wish I had even a quarter of his talent. Huge difference between "playing music" and "making music" . Well done man!!
Not alot of music impresses me, but that one went deep.
I've watched this quite a few times and it never fails to impress me
This guitar player is legit talented
Justin I cant help but commenting something you've heard a million times at this point. It is so amazing watching you play and listening to your songs or covers. As an aspiring guitar player who is rather bad at it still, it definitely gives me motivation to continue. What an incredible talent you are, jawdropping inspiration. Thank you for your work and sharing this content. Huge fan
People don't realize this guy is one of the best acoustic guitarists of all time. From a technical standpoint and savant improve skills, he has mastered things with strings it seems.
simply beautiful, needed some stress relief today, thank you!
This song hit different for those of us who tried to buy ammo in 2020.
@Marceline Ingot I wish I had a decent stockpile.
And are still trying
Truth! But still had to get more !
Genuine question here, what do you use the ammo for?
No shit....those first sad chords..i see every empty shelf and "1 box limit" sign flash before my eyes....*sniff*. I ain't cryin, just cuttin onions for Thanksgiving stuffing.....
Dude, you have not only the talent to play it like a pro, you also build those guitars like a professional. I am really surprised and you have earn my respect 🎸🤠💪
Guitar playing of a high calibre.
Specifically the .50 caliber
I saw what you did there.
Ha ha!! Well played...
Niiice! Yeah, Skynyrd compositions and the way they worked the vocal melodies and guitar melodies were top notch, and Ronnies lyrical expression just made them the best Southern Rock band. It was a sad day when their plane crash was reported. Skynyrd Act 2 was just never the same.
Justin your one of my favorite pickers by far.
This can’t be anymore American but damn this man rocks
It is awesome because it is american as hell!
Says American like it's a bad thing. Get out
I'm really impressed with your ability to pick up anything with strings and play it with such amazing skills! Absolutely awesome talent!

Well played Mr. Johnson, well played. Just like everything you play.
Like most kids I got a guitar at 14. I play for 2 years and got decent, but life happened. I'm now 28 and haven't played in 12. This inspired me to play again. Thank you justin!!!
When you take your time, set it all up right, you get a beaut like this video. Bravo. Thanks.
The last thing I would ever consider making a guitar out of. Sounds pretty damn good

TU blues man.. well done. this is what happens when bullets cost so much, you have to cut back on strings. hard times.
Clever guy, good musician! Also, many guitarists don't spend enough time on the lower pitched strings, SRV bein a killer exception to that rule!
Good? Good musician? Ugh.. you don't know. Try great!
@@waymorjameson Why waste your time on such an inane reply?

its early AM and I suddenly want my whiskey bottle!
Americans have so much talent, it simply amazes me everyday.
I don't know what's more badass- the fact the guitar is made from an ammo can, or that it only has 3 strings. Absolutely brilliant JJ.
EDIT- We need a tab of this- I've been replaying this vid for a week, can't get the melody out of my head! Also, my like button is broken...
Justin proves that a three stringed "cigar box" guitar is a serious instrument.
There used to be a guy here in Chattanooga that made box guitars that you can buy and they were actually supposed to be pretty good. He sold enough of them anyway. I never had one myself but that's pretty damn cool.
Gimme back my bullets... 'cuz ammo is EXPENSIVE!!
That’s the coolest thing I’ve ever seen and heard!! Well done!!

Maybe dedicate one to a guitar, but in these times keep them full. Keep your powder dry and head on a swivel
I hope Gary Rossington gets to hear this. It will make him proud. Justin, very well done!

Lynyrd Skynyrd: the greatest Southern Rock band ever! And needless to say I'm referring to the original pre-October '77 Skynyrd. Great job Justin, as usual! Cheers P[>
1991 to present Skynyrd is amazing too. it's different, and hard to compare to the first 5 albums, but stop putting "new" Skynyrd down. they released amazing songs even after the crash. and Johnny is a great frontman aswell
@@philipabraham2793 I didn't put down your tribute band but Lynyrd Skynyrd ended with the death of Ronnie Van Zant. "Jonnie" may have been a good "frontman" for Gary Rossington and the wanna-be's but older brother Ronnie could actually sing, not to mention he was a poet, world class songwriter, arranger and THE visionary that brought LS to life. I've got nothing against the various bands that called themselves Skynyrd after the crash but they just really should have changed the name out of respect to Ronnie. They could have toured and been successful with a new name and left Ronnie's legacy unsoiled. Touring for 30 years with various replacements until they were down to Rossington being the only founder but still under the Skynyrd name was done for one thing: MONEY. The only albums worthy of the Skynyrd name are those done by Ronnie (Pronounced through Street Survivors).
Patrick Foster I hear where you’re coming from but I’d bet all the money in the world that Ronnie would have wanted them to make as much money as they possibly could seeing that they worked their asses off for years and didn’t really have a legit chance to enjoy the rewards
You obviously know nothing about southern rock or the Allman Brothers.
Im like obsessed with this video...
Absolutely mind blowing at the talent this man has.
Damn!!
It really is mind-blowing you are right I really think he's the best guitarist of all time
2020, The Corona Virus Pandemic and this song made ammunition become the new "gold" on earth!!!
Better get a metal lathe and get spinning that gold
Lead & gold are pretty close on the periodic table...
I love your version of this Lynard Skynard ballad and that guitar sounds so good. Rock it!

I'm bout to turn 50 and goin bald and have a remake called Gimmee back my mullet!😆
Slow clap.

Now that’s funny!!!!
I love the picture hanger string tree.
This should of been on the soundtrack of red dead redemption 2.

I did a cursory glance at the Wikipedia page for cigar box guitars, they seems to come into being soon after cigar boxes were popularized around 1840, and seemed to become pretty popular around then. Also, balalaikas are similar, and have been around in one form or another since the 1688. So, it'd definitely fit in.
Get out my head!
not that RDR2 soundtrack was bad, but this song would definitely blend in.
this song flows like water
