It's fair to say that, when the original Alien film hit the silver screen, it was a revolution for the sci-fi genre. A nail-biting game of cat-and-mouse against a terrifying alien horror set in the darkness of space, it would kickstart one of the most memorable film franchises to ever come out of Hollywood.
The 1986 sequel, Aliens, was equally brilliant as it placed less emphasis on horror and more on action. The film was certainly no less tense for the change in direction and remains my personal favourite in all of the Alien films to date. A smash hit, the film spawned a whole host of associated merchandise including several video games and even a line of action figures for kids (bearing in mind this was 18-rated film which children would not have been able to watch!).
Having secured a licence to develop a game based on the franchise, Konami released Aliens into the arcades in 1990. The game is a horizontally scrolling shoot 'em up, putting the player in the combat boots of Ellen Ripley (and Corporal Hicks if playing with a friend) as she dares to take the fight to the xenomorph horde currently infesting the colonist base of Hadley's Hope.
The game features an extensive arsenal of weapons with which Ripley can obliterate the xenomorph foe. These new items can be acquired by collecting weapon tokens, which can be found out in the open, or inside weapon canisters. The player gets to choose the exact weapon they would like by waiting for the token to display the respective gun before collecting it, which is a nice touch.
Whilst the range of weapons is admirable, for some unfathomable reason, Konami chose not to include the most iconic of all the weapons in the Aliens universe, the M41A pulse rifle! Instead, Ripley starts the game with M56 smart gun - sure, it's synonymous with the Aliens universe, but it will always play second fiddle to the pulse rifle.
Having tooled themselves up appropriately, the game is an uncomplicated affair of progressing to the right, annihilating anything that moves. From aliens to strange, zombie-like humanoids, everything must be terminated with extreme prejudice.
Entering ducts and crawl-spaces results in Ripley making use of the iconic motion tracker to keep tabs on encroaching enemies. This is particularly useful for anticipating enemies popping out of air vents and shooting them before they have chance to turn you into lunch.
Certain levels are interspersed with on-rails shooting sections where Ripley rides atop the marine APC as it travels to it's next destination. The objective here is to shoot approaching aliens before they get too close, whilst also dodging out of the way of debris and storage containers left lying in the road. These sections are some of the toughest in the game, requiring quick reflexes if the player is to avoid taking too much damage.
As expected for a Konami game, the graphics are excellent. All of the character sprites are big, bold and animated with a high level of detail, most of which explode into a satisfyingly goopy pile of acidic remains when shot.
On the subject of art direction, understandably, Konami needed to introduce additional enemy designs to keep the gameplay fresh and exciting. Unfortunately, I feel that a lot of these stray too far from the original design - the inclusion of extra appendages, wings and other limbs make the aliens more reminiscent of John Carpenter than H.R. Geiger.
Sound-wise, the game is a mixed bag. The game's music is passable, but there's nothing particularly memorable about it (especially when compared to the Konami's TMNT arcade game), but there are some good digitised effects, notably the iconic screech when a xenomorph meets it's demise.
For fans of straight and simple arcade shooting experiences, Aliens is a cracking game. The difficulty isn't particular punishing (compared to others in the genre), and blowing up aliens with all the different weapons is a lot of fun. Although I think Konami really missed a trick by not including the pulse rifle, there's no doubt that Aliens provides plenty of uncomplicated, blasting action for any gamer.

Aliens Longplay (Arcade) [60 FPS]: Strap on your flamethrower and combat boots as you take the fight to the xenomorph menace in Konami's excellent shoot 'em up!
Read the video description for my review!
You're a cheater you have no talent this playthrough is void
I love your channel. How do I play this game…I want to play it badly
Are you playing aliens off a mame emualator?
I remember the movie theater we went to had this game. My dad took me to see robocop 2 and I remember playing this before the movie started. Good times
Sounds like your father was a fun Dad I try to do the same with mine glad you have that great memory with him
@@chriscripplercruz1833 thanks. Alot of my best memories as a kid include him. I also try to do the same with my own kids. Hiking, camping, movies, road trips, baseball games etc...
Is that a Guatemalan flag?
@@michaelcorrigan6577 yes it is
@@SurMonstro I was born there. 😄
Still a more sensible expansion of the universe than Prometheus.
This game has detached Xenomorph heads flying around like bats (complete with tiny little wings attached to them) and your statement is somehow still technically accurate.
I could shit into a bowl and burst a pile doing so and the resulting juxtaposition of blood and fecal matter would still make much more sense than Prometheus.
I know the nwe alien franchise is long, and boring.
I'd love to see a bat-shit crazy film version of this! All psychedelic and tripped out but heart-pounding, fun and serious as it needs to be. Give me the budget and I'll make it.
this game freaked me out as a kid... and I loved it
Same xd specially when i was in the first boss battle for first Time
-How similar is the game to the movie?
Game creator: - Yes.
23:54 alien queen shooting flames was not in the movie.
Ah yes, I remember the electric aliens and the fire-blob spitting alien queen as it was yesterday.
I imagine James Cameron at some point played Contra's last level and said "screw it, if they're going to rip off my movie they can at least have the full license."
So sad this never got a proper port to either of the 16 bit systems.
I like to imagine this is what some Japanese game Dev had as a fever dream after watching an untranslated version of "Aliens".
Aliens was extremely popular in Japan and was very influential on game developers there for decades after.
@@FingerBreakerWu thank you Capt.Actually.
@@chaosincarna
Just elucidating on the original statement.
@@chaosincarna Think of all the iconic game series and characters we have thanks to James Cameron’s vision of the franchise.
@@FingerBreakerWu You must kill at parties.
My dad used to play this at the arcades. And when I was a kid, he downloaded this game on his laptop. I loved this game.
Man I enjoyed playing this game in the arcade's when I was a kid - GOOD TIMES.
I wish I could play it again.
Me too, bro.
🤔 You can easily play it again: emulator + ROM.
Time to build your own MAME cabinet!
@@naturesinterface6663 Yes because that’s the same…I’m buying the actual arcade.
Konami, Capcom, and Sega. They always delivered.
Konami really took liberty with the Xenomorph variants XDDD Really cool that Ripley started off with the Smartgun, though. I'm a big fan of that weapon.
They did go all out in their designs. They were a huge fan of Aliens so this must of been an honor for them to take on.
Konami weren't even the worst offenders. Go do a Google search for "Kenner Aliens figures" and you'll see some truly God-awful Xenomorph designs (along with some pretty hilarious cutesy Colonial Marine designs that look like they wouldn't be out of place in a daycare center).
Ever wondered what it would look like if a Xenomorph infected a gorilla? Me neither but thanks to Kenner, now you can find out! And guess what - it's AWFUL.
There was some black goo as well.
Sadly, this game never made it to the Genesis due to a licensing dispute between Konami and James Cameron. The cartridges were ready to be shipped but were never sent out.
TIL that this game actually existed. I remember some kids talking about it at school in 90 or 91 and I pretended like I knew what it was and had beaten it. All this time I thought they had just made it up but here it is
One of the few arcade games that I was able to afford to beat
I was always the kid that never was good at any aracade videogame (was always a console kid), my younger brother was the one that was really good at almost any game in arcades, the one and only game that my brother never touched and I was really good at Aliens. I remember watching the game for the first time and was so attracted but also so scared of it (The Alien creature was always scary to me) that I had to try it and boy was it fun, I was so good at playing that sometimes even kids from my local arcade neighborhood started to watched me play without dying. This was back in 2003 when I was 11, good times. Thanks for posting! Ps: Those levels where you are shooting while driving in order to get the little girl was never in the arcade version I used to play. Also, in the final battle against the Alien Queen, instead of spitting acid she fired replicas of herself very rapidly that went to the very end of the screen.
“They mostly come out at night”
Kinda disagree with you on this one, Newt. They’re fucking everywhere!
If they mostly come out at night, and this is day... YEESH!
Grabbing the flamethrower just before the nest and flaming the hell out of the eggs is nice touch.
The only game my brother let me play when i was young because i was too-scare to play. This is one of the reason why my brother can play the arcade all the time
I always liked the 'mall casual' attire my combat marine was wearing
That is supposed to be Ripley you're playing as
The creative freedom of the developers were... over the top to say the least.
This game made me feel scared playing it. It did a great job at it too.
This game had exceptional design.
Ehhhhhhh....
I Remember Wasting 10 Bucks on Quarters on this Game. Didn't get my an advanced allowance till the end of the month. LOL
Courtown arcade, Wexford, Ireland circa 1990 🥰
Fuckin A got so good at it that I could get to the final boss on 20p , can’t remember the name of the arcade it wasn’t the crock of gold, it was the large one with the waltzers outside
Numa Arcades, Monterrey, Nuevo León, México, 1992.
Those were the days.
My childhood! God I loved this game :)
I remember playing this in the arcade. This game sure was a quarter sucker.
Gotta admit, though, most of those creature designs fit quite well into the Alienverse.
Not the flying heads, though. They look like one of the designers forgot this wasn't Castlevania.
You are really good at this game! I could never get very far with it...
Nice review, flamethrower is my favourite weapon in this game.
I played this at the arcade with 1 coin an finished the game twice with it just to leave a high score. . The game allowed you to start over after completion.
That’s rare
Lucky You! 😳 I spend 10 bucks in Quarters! Game Over Man! 😅
Not that I was a lousy player but the one I played was in hard mode. player gets killed easy with one hit and you had to enter a coin to continue to play.
This is the american version... The japanese version only allow one time and dont have bonus stages. Of course, good memories in the arcades. Greetings.
@@DavidFlores-ix2cy bonus stage kills you easily
@@burntyper Sí, es verdad, esta versión americana llegó mucho tiempo después, pero los "viciosos" de antaño aún así lo acabaron varias veces, tal como fueron también "Vendetta", "Sunset riders", "Metamorphic force", "The Simpsons", "X-men", "TMNT 1" etc, etc. Tantos clásicos que nos dejó KONAMI en los arcades. Saludos.
Excellent work beating Aliens.
Enjoyed this more than prometheus and resurrection.
Hmm... xenomorph with wings, electric one and Spider like alien. Ironically those species appeared in the movie Gremlins 2 just few months later.
I like the one alien that's just a head with wings. Which lazy asshole came up with that at the dev studio?
@@CopiousDoinksLLC Possibly the same person who thought flying Medusa heads in Castlevania were a good idea
Owned the arcade game of this years ago (was a converted Tron cabinet...which made me sad). Pretty fun shooter.
Yeah its a real shame that so much cannibalism occurred in the classic arcade industry. Makes it very difficult to find obscure machines from the old days in retro arcades, being most were eventually kitted into more mainstream machines.
Arcade 1-Up, this should be your next project!!!
Agincourt mall arcade in Scarborough had this. Ate a lot of my quarters in the early 90s
2:05 Decapitated Alien shooting PLASMA BALLS from it neck-hole.... OK.............
When Konami was king.
I remember playing this at the Canandaigua movie theater before and after every movie we saw. Little did my parents know, I went to see Aladdin 8 times just so I could play this game.
I am surprised! Nice game!
And the player has extraordinary skills...! 😳
these videos are Tool Assisted
Exactly, invisibility. I prefer videos with players that can be damaged from enemies .
Non stop havoc! Love it!!!

In 1990: Best graphics EVER!
In 2021: Pastel. Pastel. Pastel.
The way the pink Aliens runs make me think it's Jim Carrey inside coming up to you to do the Claw thing from Liar Liar.
I remember this one at the local ice skating rink. Most people that played it failed to be get past the first boss. They also had Toki and VS Castlevania.
the elevator being sabotaged by aliens and the floor collapsing were two spots that really brought up the tension and I lost my quarters :(
Amazing retro game !!! I need play this !!!!
L lo a mejor experiencia en un multiarcade o panel con palancas conectado por hdmi a tu televisión !!!!
I used to play this game in the arcade for hours on the weekend as a kid in the 80s, I sucked at playing it, lol. But it was my favorite movie & my favorite game growing up. I remember all of my tokens got spent playing this arcade, lol 🤣
This game was scary, to make the matters worse, the arcade saloon where I played it was very dark inside.
Looks good.
You have also survived. . . Congratulations!
I clocked this
Its a flawless gameplay!! CONGRATS!! I enjoyed it so much, more because i never ended the game neither in mame/sega emulators XD. Didnt know how to beat the Queen last fight XD
You can either use the exoskeleton suit and push her out the airlock or you can destroy her and her remains are flushed out the airlock.
Lol sega emulators
Wow.. I was 5 years old when this came out.. Sadly I was never able to play it. My country usually would get arcades 1 to 3 years later after the release. I would waste many, many coins on it!
I'd love to see a new side scrolling ALIENS game updated, like the new Contra.
That elevator scene is intense 😳
отличное прохождение, я бы так не в жизь не смог, круто
I'd love to see a youtube video presentation of this game with James Horner's classic soundtrack.
Flamethrower my go to weapon.
Aliens arcade 31st Anniversary, since 1990.
When Rippley becomes Rambo.
She's blonde now too
Oh yeah! I remember that part in ALIENS where the zombies were shooting MG-42s...
I think those are DP-28's, but yeah ww2 era weapons were a must on deep space terraforming planets.
I mean the Colonial Marines smart guns were basically reused German machine guns with spare parts (like bike bits) glued on with stabilizing armatures.
道中の敵がスプラッターハウスの敵と似たフォルムしてるなぁ
Just another bug hunt? *LET'S RAAAAAAWK!!*
Very nice game. I wish this would've been on SNES in Europe. We would've played the crap out of it...
It's actually a damn shame Koname never ported this to any home system. It was a very solid, fun game.
Is it just me, or aliens scream BLYAAA when they are killed??))
SUKA BLYAD
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a gun that can fire bullets out of your crotch and feet before.
Wow this video has been made 4 years ago and still hasn't made it to 1K yet
I always show kids the bit where newt slips out of the coat when they cross that vent. If she had done her coat up she wouldn't have fallen. Never had an issue with the kids making sure their coats were done up.
これが一番映画に近くてリプリーを感じられた☺️
there are 2 other ways to destroy the alien queen at the end (after the cargo doors open); 1 is by continually smacking her with the mech suit until she breaks into pieces and falls out of the ship, or (2) to not get in the mech suit at all and keep shooting her with your gun until she breaks into pieces and falls out of the ship. doesn't change the ending though.
I will try it I have it on arcade !!
so be movie accurate or just be an ultimate badass!
Nice game play

Este era mi juego favorito
When you get diferent weapons you could change to use them whenever you wanted,if you feel You need to use different strategies.
Nostalgia... when Konami was the real Konami, not a company of pachinkos...
Only big game i know Komoney still runs is Yugioh. They announced Yugioh Master Duel recently.
Since it was developed by Konami, most of the sound and aliens were reused from Contra, I think.
In Aliens game they reused assets from Contra which was inspired by Aliens
The circle is now complete
Childhood.
i'm sure Capcom took a lot of notes from this game for their Alien vs Predator.
Why this game ISN'T available of all systems is beyond me
Excelente, ^^
L E S B I A N S. in space no one can hear you queef
So if Konami had Aliens license, then what is contra for?
20:13 Now that is one hell of an external hemorrhoid, might want to see that doctor about that.
Hemorrhoids and corona viruses.
Flamethrower when i play..always!! OR Smartgun
I loved this game and all the capcom and Konami games like it. I really wish arcades still existed in the USA with games like this instead of the Dave and Buster style ones we have today. The Japanese still have them and I really don’t get why Americans gave up on them.
懐かしい。
小学生の頃、このゲームが得意で50円でクリアーして何周も遊んでました。
Alien franchise is more suitable to a Metroidvania than a beat'em up. Metroid series was inspired by the Alien movies and they released a metroidvania style game for Nintendo DS called Alien:Infestation. I still liked the graphics of this game
Sonething wrong. When I played this on arcade long long ago in 1995 the little boy part doesn't exist...
And we keep the upgrade weapon to the next level
I love this game because its almost like contra 😎😎😎😎
Could someone tell me the names of all the alien variants in this game? Please
Watc the video All Xenomorphs explained and nearly at the end of the video there were names in this video that's all I know
Any idea how to play this nowadays? The first arcade game I actually beat as a kid!
MAME Arcade Emulator
Looking at some of the enemies in this game - you just want to grab the game designer by the collar and ask: "Did you actually WATCH the movie??"
Interesting color palette , baby blue pants? Pink aliens?
It was hip
I stayed in the arcade as a kid, but I've never seen this one. Looks dope. I've played the Predator arcade game though
You mean Alien vs Predator, right?
Is this game on any of the emulator systems?
Kinda shocked this didn’t have a nes or genesis version. 🤷🏾♂️
♥
this fucking soundtrack!
