It's a thing I've realized over the last 15 years of my life traveling and living different places with my non-European spouse. The experience locals have in their own country is often worlds apart from tourist's experience. They wouldn't pull that BS with a French person because a French person would instantly know it's BS and call it out. Meanwhile, tourists are already insecure of what's considered 'normal' in the place they visit and what not and they will accept a lot more in order to not come across impolite, and people will absolutely take advantage of this. They know that tourist doesn't know what's 'normal' and 'right', they know that tourist usually doesn't want to spoil their holiday with arguing, and they know that tourist is not going to become a regular at their establishment, so they just don't care. I've had this experience in my own home country - Germany - when I would travel there with my husband (who happens to be not only a tourist but also not white). On a couple of occasions, I told him to go ahead to some cafe or restaurant first and secure a table while I was still paying for some thing or the other. He found the service while he was alone kind of condescending/aggressive, but the moment I arrive the tone makes a complete 180 and they're polite and service-oriented as they should be. Simillarly in my husband's home country - where we live - there are certain establishments that locals LOVE, but I would never go to alone because I know the moment I go alone they'll only see me as a fat goose to shake some tourist coin out of. If my husband is with me all is as it should be, if I'm alone it's just not worth the effort, because I'll literally have to argue not to pay quadruple. Same thing all over the world. Every place has people ready to pull a fast one on a stranger.

I can only read a little Korean, but if you think it's discrimination then you're wrong. France is infamous in Europe for being rude long before flying across the globe became a thing.
As a German I think the Waiter was very rude, I´ve never seen something like this here in Germany. I also wonder what´s up with their Wine menu? Seems like 90% isn´t in stock. They should change their menu or do daily menus to chose from.
It seemed like the restaurant was lazy or hoping people would just answer what wine color they want so he could bring out their house offering? The waiter kept asking "what color" instead of looking at winery/type unless I'm misunderstanding.
No you don't understand he said those expensive wines he only had a few bottles of them, he said 12 bottles of each for THE YEAR. Some wines are produced in very little scale and to get even one box (12bottles in a box) you have to have personal long lasting connections with the seller). It seems to be something like that here. This is the reason he didn't have a lot of bottles. It seem exagerated because i can't see him serving only twelve bottles but still. Could be true. As for rudeness this is pretty standard for french restaurants imo.
@@TheMusicalKnokcers But if they only sell rare wines, than they should even more have daily menues for wines. If I would go to a restaurant and they told me almost everything is out, I would leave. Not sure if that makes it better, just because it´s standard, doesn´t mean it´s good service? Do you tip waiters like him? Someone like him would never get a tip out of me, even if it´s 49,99 I would want the 1ct back..
@@hundredfireify Yeah, if there has been long historical prejudice on specific region.. there must be a reason for that. Is tourism a major industry in Marseille? Restaurants in most tourist spots are unfriendly..
This video (as well as the airport saga at the beginning of the “Worlds Greatest Taxi Driver” video) is a reminder to all off us that no matter how trying or difficult travel can be, we can still have a joyous (and delicious) time if we stay positive and politely focused on the pleasures of great food and wine. 🙏
It is really happy to see that he turns every rude moments and situation into happy and enjoying experience. This is the great answer of the way how people can enjoy their lives! I always enjoy watching your videos!
yeah , this is what i try to do in california!! But when i see others getting bad service or something, they react so defensively. Lots of arguing, fighting, and risking police interactions for something so miniscule. You can really change the atmospheres of places just being yourself and happy, if someones negative or rude remarks you can just simply ignore them. Sometimes they have bad days, you never know whats going on in peoples lives. This excludes racism, you can try to teach instead and sometimes you may have to leave if they are just too rude.

Sorry if this is a long comment, but I watch a lot of "fast" content in UA-cam and theres a lot of UA-camrs i subscribed to where I tend to skip or lose that engagement even though its "fast content". But your content is amazing, I just love how you show your thought process on wine (dont even drink wine) or your thoughts on this dishes (dont eat this sort of food) and the polite critique of the restaurant the staff. But overall I love how you communicate with your partner and just comes up with random topics to dicuss. As someone who is recently married I just think this content is pure gold. I definetly learn alot just how you communicate with people and the partner, so genuine and classy but natural. I hope you get the chance to visit outside Europe would really love your insights.

Well he must say it because some peoples dont want to switch wine in the middle of dinner so it is best to warn peoples before they get frustrated for not having to eat it.
If it was very popular and it happened to be last bottle, it would be normal to point out. Like catching the last reservation at a busy restaurant. You'd feel somewhat lucky But of course it's completely hollow if they are lying about supply which people are won't to do!

Absolutely in love with this type of content you do together with your wife. So simple but really entertaining, especially with you interacting with others.
Never in my life have I seen a server pour only one glass of wine and then walk away, or put down a bottle, not open it, and then walk away. It's bonkers 😅
let me corect you in france the more select establishment never serve more than one glass of wine when you buy a bottle (usualy a very small one). This is by no mean for disrespect but in fact it is for you to test if the wine is good and at your taist. you like it you get the bottle you don t like you choose another wine.
Helicopter servers are seen more as an annoyance than any help in France. It's more the mentality of "I'm an adult, I can serve myself and I don't want a server to come annoy me everytime my glass is empty, I want to eat in peace"
@@saigonpunkid Yes but for French people they just think it's annoying. It's just cultural and mentality differences. They're not trying to be disrespectful or weird on purpose. That's just their way

Most restaurants have a printed wine list and it’s difficult to change or reprint them a reg basis. that’s why we have a pdf list on an ipad that can be edited on a daily basis if needed. the first wine chateau cremade blanc only 9000 bottles are for sale each year!
Wow, only 9000 bottles? That’s a tiny supply for such a large country. Tell me though, are the number of polite servers in France also strictly limited to 9000?
You guys are adorable. I have social anxiety so I can only dream to have these kinds of interactions. My heart is racing like crazy if I have to talk to others
I went through the same thing until a few years ago. Don't force yourself out of your comfort zone, but start off small with pleasant 5 minute interactions with at least one stranger per day, whether it's a friendly staff member at a cafe or a chatty old lady at the bus stop. It's kinda bittersweet sounding but conversations with someone you're not likely to see again are the building blocks of becoming more outgoing. Hope these tips help!

I’ve been to France Paris a couple months ago and I really loved the views, foods, and all those beautiful historical sites. To be honest, I was somewhat disappointed at the level of customer service I received in some restaurants, but I tried to enjoy every moment there because I wanted my trip to be a fun and awesome experience. I think it’s worth mentioning that you will face racism or unpleasant events anywhere around the world, so it’s not something unique to France. Life is an adventure, and you never know what it’s like until you go there yourself. I met wonderful people in France and it really is a beautiful country. Love from Korea😊

Throughout my life, I've watched people discuss wine with confusion, I've seen adverts that seemed to advertise an alcoholic juice, I've had jobs where I had to pour mysterious expensive liquid for people in suits, I even tried drinking it and seeing what the faff is all about, And then I quit alcohol and have no intention to drink wine ever again. It's a shame I only found this channel, and discovered what this wine/taste/experience thing is all about, great video!
I just found your page the other night and so far am really enjoying! I am Australian living in France working with wine but have only heard of Chateau Vannieres thanks to your video. Thanks for the content!!
I think he was semi-rude and didn't know his wines well. Oh well. But maybe because it is almost closing, he lightened up a bit. Thank you wine king for another video! I hope you've had a chance to try some wines from the Texas Hill Country! They are also the second largest AVA in the US only behind California. The grapes grown here are similar varieties to Tuscany as they share similar climates. I do recommend a lot of local wineries here Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo as they are the best from this region of the US.
You are such a charmer to the staff! The French are not usually being racist - they are like us English, just rude to everybody. Some pubs and restaurants here (and in Spain) are just like the Slaughtered Lamb in the American Werewolf in London film... you walk in and everyone just goes silent and stares at you.
In my experience the Brits were similar to Americans in that they seemed more ignorant rude. Like they don't mean to be outright rude but they just don't know about other cultures besides the most common minorities that they may have had experiences with. The French just seem to have a superiority complex. They feel like they need to be rude to other cultures they deem to be less significant. I mean I love french culture but I think that superiority complex is why there has not been anything significant from them in terms of culture in modern times. Also probably why they act like that to people from USA because American culture has overwhelmingly been defacto modern pop culture for many decades now. I lived in New York as well and find the people very similar to people from Paris. They have a superiority complex because of old things that they highly likely had zero part in haha. I digress though.
You have to come to Spain, we won't treat you like these frenchmen that can be a hit or miss🤣But I love how you handle everything with a smile and laugh
As an American who's visited Spain and France many times, I must say that Spain is better in almost every way. The food is better and cheaper and the people are way friendlier. You won't get this kind of service in Spain.

Something I learned from you is to not let people who vibe low ruin your high vibe. And in the end your high vibe might just help them vibe a little higher. 😁👍

Someone like him would never get a tip out of me, even if it´s 49,99 I would want the 1ct back..

yeah , this is what i try to do in california!!

But your content is amazing, I just love how you show your thought process on wine (dont even drink wine) or your thoughts on this dishes (dont eat this sort of food) and the polite critique of the restaurant the staff. But overall I love how you communicate with your partner and just comes up with random topics to dicuss. As someone who is recently married I just think this content is pure gold.

let me corect you in france the more select establishment never serve more than one glass of wine when you buy a bottle (usualy a very small one).

그냥 식사시간일 뿐인데 말씀 나누시는 걸 보고 많은 걸 배우게 되네요! 참 겸손하시고 멋진 부부이신 것 같아요!! 정말 정말 본 받고 갑니다
I just found your page the other night and so far am really enjoying! I am Australian living in France working with wine but have only heard of Chateau Vannieres thanks to your video. Thanks for the content!!
but your patience and politeness should not go unmentioned! great watching even though i know zero Korean
I watch this channel from time to time to remind myself how to be a gent in awkward situations.
저는 와인이나 샴페인은 조그만 마셔도 취하는 소주파이지만 두분의 대화만 봐도 미소가 지어져 저도모르게 흐뭇해집니다. 즐거웠어요^^
I love listening to you and your wife switch between languages! You are very polite to the staff.
You are such a charmer to the staff! The French are not usually being racist - they are like us English, just rude to everybody. Some pubs and restaurants here (and in Spain) are just like the Slaughtered Lamb in the American Werewolf in London film... you walk in and everyone just goes silent and stares at you.
🤣
Rude to everybody😂😂😂😂😂😂
British people aren’t rude to everybody, I find their service pretty exemplary.
You have to come to Spain, we won't treat you like these frenchmen that can be a hit or miss🤣But I love how you handle everything with a smile and laugh
Completely agree. Better service, better price, great dishes, beautiful weather, and friendly smile everywhere in Spain
As an American who's visited Spain and France many times, I must say that Spain is better in almost every way. The food is better and cheaper and the people are way friendlier. You won't get this kind of service in Spain.
@@pablokim9016 Better service? Where in Spain? 😂 A lot of "mañana" attitude where I'm at.
@@Beunibster That sounds like a common Anglosphere misconception that 'good service' equals 'fast service'.
@@Elcore That sounds very racist of you
