Four years later and this video helped me make holes for my cresties enclosures. Thank you. I love this video. You are great at content creation. I appreciate the thorough video :)
That is so cool! Thank you so much for the very kind words.
@@SupremeGecko of course! You do awesome stuff and the way you give the info isn’t boring. The nice words are well deserved :)
Small tip from me, if your going to use a drill with 1/2 drill bit to drill the holes in your plastic tub, first drill a pilot hole with 1/8-5/32 drill bit first and then use the bigger drill bit. It won't crack the tub or create stress in the plastic. 🎉
Thanks. I am trying to remember the last time I drilled a vent hole and cracked a tub.... I bet it has been 10 years and easily 4-5 hundred tubs.
Great tips, especially the tips on locating majority of holes on opposite of the moist side. As for actual vents, I like to use curtain grommets because 1 - unlike screen vents I can choose my own custom mesh (screen vents I find are not fine enough to keep out gnats), 2 - I can pull grommets apart to replace mesh in case the mesh gets torn or old, and 3 - I don't have to worry about the mess involved with glue. In a way, it combines the best of screen vents with the best of mesh materials. Do need to make sure to get quality grommets though. Thanks again for an excellent video Wally.
Thank you for the kind comments. I really appreciate that. If you find time, please message me on FB or IG and shoot me a photo of one of your vents. This sounds interesting.
I just switched to this method from the hot glue and I like it! Thanks for the tip!
I just ordered the tubs, hole cutter, and I already have snake bags to cut but I ordered some cloth, can’t wait to make new tubs with proper holes because I learned mine are so wrong and that’s probably why they dry out so fast!! Thank you so much for these videos
I am so very glad to help. Keep me posted on how this goes for you.
I like when you threw the soldering iron!
That's a great tip!
I hate soldering irons. ;)
@@SupremeGecko I like them, but when I use them I don't make massive holes.
I honestly prefer the drill bit method though!
@@houseofinvertebrates2869 I completely understand. I should have added a picture or two of our dwarf white containers where I have a series of holes drilled with a standard bit rather then the hole or door handle bits.
@@SupremeGecko could have
I definitely use the drilling method a lot. I think my favorite tip is the nicely priced bins! When I get some new animals, I will definitely get some of those cheaper ones. Bins can be so expensive sometimes! I also window mesh to cover the holes even if it doesn't really keep out gnats. I dont think i have a better way of doing things at all. I LOVE those vents! I have seen them being used frequently for tarantulas i think
Thanks, I think this was a favorite video of mine as I was getting so many questions about ventilation.
thanks for the tips
this is a lesson learn for reptile lover
keep sharing
big like from Jakarta
Thank you so much for the wonderful comments
Love the video! Possible Tip on cleaning of the plastic blurs: Is to use a wood al. I use mine and it is like hot knife through butter. With your contacts at some of these vendors you have, you should talk to them on starting to make the Wyllie vent! It is the same size as the vent but instead of screen it has cheese cloth in it or that other material that you ran out of. That is a thousand dollar idea. Do say I never gave you nothing! lololol . Thanks man for the video! I want to get in to that end of the year drawing you give away some great stuff!
Thanks for the suggest. I tried one! I could not get it to work. Maybe due to the angle I was taking. The Wyllie vent. Love it!!! PLEASE do get into this drawing.
Wally I like all your videos !! Thank you for taking the time to educate I have depended on your knowledge to start in the isopod hobby! And your isopod food is the best.. my new dairy cows laid in it for a hour as soon as I introduced them to new enclosure:)
Fantastic. Thank you so much for supporting us and for your thoughtful comment! We try very hard to educate the best we can.
Lots of very useful tips. Wish i could talk to the camera like you. Very natural.
Oh my gosh! This was a whole day of editing out Ummms and Uhhhhhs. ;)
Yes enjoyed the video, most important was the list of vent suppliers which will point me in the right direction to find what I need for my projects. I will be dealing with geckos as well as plants and Plant Lights with water features inside. The vents are need to place stainless steal screens as many of the other herps require the screens because they have very strong claws and make short work of the plastic screens. Learned the hard way, but overall enjoyed your video. Thank You
Thank you VERY much. A lot of options out there.
all great tips wally loved the video keep up the amazing work
Thanks my friend
This is the exact thing I was looking for thanks
Very glad to help
Ur the reason i started isopod culture. Theyre amzing! The pttrn n simplicity! ❤❤
Absolutely! Thanks!
So many great tips. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you
Some great tips Wally!
Thank you. Hopefully people can use some of these
Great tutorials thank you vert much!
Absolutely my pleasure.
Your tip of using worm bags for the holes. I have thrown some away. Lesson learned. Thank you.
Thank you! Very glad this helped. Maybe I should have mentioned washing them but I think people will know.
Thank you Sir for showing how you do it, I've been looking for this kind of video and your the first to show it to me.
Very glad to help.
I liked the tips on the material that can be used for the vent holes. Thanks Wally..😃
Thanks for the nice comment and for watching.
Saved the containers to an Amazon list for future purchase. Thanks!
Right on! I do the same.
awesome information
Thank you so much.
very helpful tips
Thank you so much.
Wally’s how to 101 😊
Thank you! This summer I think I’m going to do this! My tubs are just getting too small!
Thank you
I tried to shove as much in as I could :) if you do have any questions let me know
If you are going to buy a cutting matt, you might want to buy a razor wheel cutter used for quilting. Quick way to cut fabric.
Never thought of that. Great call.
I like that a lot the cheesecloth suggestion helped.
For some of my small terrariums I like to use transpose medical take from 3M. My main concern was little soil mites I do believe there are small perforated holes in the medical tape but they're very small I've had no escapees for a more permanent enclosure I would probably use the mesh or something else
I'm really surprised to see keepers STILL using the large holed plastic (metal) vents! Thanks for the comment.
Nice video! My fabric of choice is mosquito netting or metal screen. I also love my soldering iron with a flat end when using a metal screen. I simply melt the screen into the plastic bin.
Thanks for watching. Mosquito netting. Great idea. I've seen the flat end soldering irons and I am sure they speed up the process a bit but I still like the drill bits by far. If it works for you though, stick with it. If you are using metal screen (what are you creating ventilation holes for- what animals?) would you consider the metal vents?
@@SupremeGecko I've used it for frogs, geckos even even guppies. The screen works great for water changes and keeping the guppies in 😋. Yes the vents are great for the right applications. Typically they are not the right size for me. But they sure look nice and clean that way!
@@littlecritterspetshop I see now. Yes, we have some wire tops for our Gecko enclosures and you are correct, watering works well with them.
I use diamond tipped hollow drills 40 to 65 mm in diameter (specially made for flat glass) I weld metal gauze to the plastic with a soldering iron.
WOW. That's some industrial workmanship. I would love to see photos.
@@SupremeGecko No, just a small handicraft shop (glazier) but works just fine (-;
Youre so organized now i feel ghetto lol great tips! Will be trying out cheese cloths!
No no no! I just appear organized. If you want the truth, ask my wife ;)
Dollar tree thin fashion scarfs work too! Lol I have heart print on my armadillidium maculatum tub. Friend of mine asked me when I posted pictures of them if they were my favorite 😂
Dollar Tree won't let me buy lady's scarfs in bulk anymore.
Supreme Gecko I only bought two. Send your wife? Maybe she can get away with it.
@@fansiderc9302 :)
Thanks for the video, that’s exactly what I do with my Dubai roaches. Thanks, now I might do that with my geckos
:) Great job. I do this all the time too. See someone using a technique with say tarantulas and use it for isopods :)
Paper and pen?? Ok Boomer. Joking, thanks for all the tips been a big help as I am expanding my isopod collection and building my feeder collections.
:) One of my fav commercials :) Thanks for the kind words.
Have you made a video updating the bins. I went to find the ones used here and they’ve gone up about $20 since this video at least on Amazon
I have not. I do research on bins all the time, checking sizes and prices. But, I don't redo the videos as that would be so time consuming.
I'm still stuck using a soldering iron lol, totally going to search for a decent drill at garage sales this spring!
If you were closer, I would drill out a bunch for you.
@@SupremeGecko I know you guys would! You rock!
Another great informative video. My first containers are terrible. A few box cutter holes in the top and none on the sides. Those pods are surviving but not thriving. Now that I have the correct tools and technique, should I move them to new enclosures?
Mine were too. But we all learn. There were NO videos out when I started keeping isopods. I hope these videos help others avoid some of the mistakes I made. For me, I move the when they are ready to move- after about 7-9 months of being in the old container and ready to move to new substrate and such.
I gathered 20 individuals of Philoscia Muscorum in my garden. What precise ventilation setup should I use for this culture? 5 L box
I would give two holes on either side of the non- humid side, then a hole on the top of the enclosure.
Excellent tips! Do those tubs your featured have a gasket seal?
Thanks Rus. No gasket but they seal tight. I wish I could hand you one to check out. ;) At this price, even if you found they did not steal tight enough for your herd of Houdinis, you could use them for millipedes.
Supreme Gecko Very true! A steal at that price 👍
Hi Wally! I know it's been awhile since you made this video. Do you still recommend the iris tb-42 bins or would a bit with a gasket be best?
Thinks always change. If I could redo my room entirely again (and maybe I will in 2023) I would do larger bins (deeper) with LOTS of ventilation on the top and some cross ventilation holes on the sides covered with cheesecloth or chiffon.
@@SupremeGecko Interesting. Why cheesecloth or chiffon and not a 400 mesh? I bought the iris gasket bins, tried making ventilation last weekend with a hole saw, and cracked a number of the containers. 😭
@@wanderlustfarm First screening. I find metal screening more difficult to work with. I like the chiffon for its ease of use. I also get mealworms in 'snake bags' and use the snake bag material (heavier than cheesecloth). Next cracked bins- it might be due to your drill bit. Make sure you have one that has more teeth. Also, are you breaking them when you first start ot when the hole is almost done?
This is a great video! Also, some of my geckos are not eating. What should I do?
Thank you. Without more background info (like the actual geckos that are not eating, etc) there is NO way to tell you what to do :) It might just be as simple as the temps are going down and they have less appetite.
@@SupremeGecko Thanks, they are starting to eat a few mealworms.
@@PlecsExotics3 Cool
Great video!!! Question, on the dry glue for the side vents, the isopods wont eat that?
Or would the vents need to be high above?
Thanks
Not from my experience.
I keep them pretty high
You are welcome
Where can I find the vents you suggested?
Sorry!!!! I forgot to add the links. Will do first thing tomorrow morning
@@SupremeGecko thank you so much I've been looking for something like this for my enclosures
I am in the process of building a rack for my 10 to 20 gram Crested geckos.
The Hole Saw Bit and Vents make it so easy. Just time consuming. Going to make 72 tubs this time.
That is a LOT of tubs. I agree, this will take some time but well worth it. Have you already ordered the vents?
@@SupremeGecko yep vents should be here today.
I also found my 1st clutches from the Red 1.2 group I got from you at Tinley in October.
@@RN-on4yn Are you kidding!?! Fantastic! Congrats.
@@SupremeGecko put then together the day after Christmas. Witnessed a lock with one female a few days later. Never observed the lock with the 2nd female. Knew they were gravid about a week ago.
Found 1 clutch last night....found the 2nd clutch this morning.
@@RN-on4yn You are killing it! This is such great news to hear, especially with those animals.
Hi. It's me again. I would like to ask what's the perfect size of plasctin bin for hatchling, yearling, fully adults size leopard gecko. ( for rack bin system) the reason I asked, I would like to breed them. Sorry for giving you too many questions. And thank you for answering all my questions. Keep safe. 😁
Great question! I like to start my baby leos in a 6 quart. They will do well there for a couple months. My juveniles and adults all go into a 12-15 qt tub.
@@SupremeGecko thank you so much. 😁😁😁
@@dfantasticcreatures436 My pleasure
Do you sell the vents?
I don't but I will put some links in the descriptions today.
So isopod important need humidity spot and dry spot?
You should always try to keep a slight gradient but some isopods have more specific needs. Like with any animal you should do your research on the specific species.
@@fansiderc9302 perfect answer.
Thank you
@@fansiderc9302 I'm still learning about isopod before keeping them .. thanks for your advice
Wanz there are some species I have yet to get into and just have general information about. Others I have done in-depth research about. Passed about a few at the expo last weekend I would like to own but I don’t feel I know enough about those specific ones to have them just yet.
First comment!
You are BACK!!!!
I get nervous watching you with that drill....
....and did you see me with the razor! Oye!
I did! Yikes!
i can make notes on my computer... why kill a tree? ;p
Good point. My comment was more of a general- HEY, GET READY FOR SOME KEY INFO. Hope you enjoyed the video despite this.
@@SupremeGecko was just teasing ;)
@@OperationBaboon No worries. I know people are rightfully concerned. Thanks for clarifying. Now for my Sheldon Cooper laugh :)
@@SupremeGecko heh!
