Interesting to learn that Jared left the public sector to rejoin the private sector. Would be insightful to have an ep covering the public vs private sector!

It’s intriguing that Denise and Jared were able to share their experiences and thoughts around staying/leaving/what they’re looking for in a role etc so openly not just in front of their boss (immensely commendable the culture you’ve built, John) but also them being okay with their lives and perspectives scrutinised online. I appreciated this episode. Hope Denise is doing good 👌🏻

Omg guys, can you please have another episode to delve deeper into workplace issues. I think there is so much to talk about but it is NOT out there. Preach it John and Denise, I really learnt something personally from your insights and the things you guys have learnt. I like how you guys kept things real too (or at least it seems real iykwim). Keep doing what you do guys!

Denise got good insight. Friends are built on shared values and principles, and trust. Having stuff to do together, or talk about, is not a basis for a real relationship. (But work relationship can lah.)

Jon's insight on toxic loops - I think it stems from people feeling like if they come across as liking their jobs, they worry people will think they are having an easy/slack life, which will draw envy from other people, or an impression that they aren't working hard enough. It's the same mentality as people who get toxic by having a sense of pride and showing off how hard the work, how late they stay back, etc.

Great episode guys. It was really brave of Denise to share her story in front of her employer and colleagues - agree with John that it’s a cutting edge topic, great takeaways I think a lot of us can relate to. Also props to John for sharing his perspective as an employer. I think as employees we sometimes forget the level of responsibility they hold and that we should be grateful for.

keep your friends close but keep your enemies closer. i learnt it the hard way, while i treat all colleagues as bros and friends not all see it that way. we need to beware which colleagues we can treat as real friends and which ones we need to filter the info we give them. office environment is the most important doesnt matter what job we do. :D now im jobless hire me pls! :D hahah

personally I've been in the job hop series in my short span of career. Having said that I think that through that experience, it really broadens my perspective and also allows me to work with so many different people, culture, work style etc. An example is if you have person A who works in same company for 5 yrs vs person B who works in 3 different companies. In my view, person B would have been more exposed to different challenges and colleagues etc. Recently while chatting with a counterpart, I realized this to be true and makes me more confident of the choices that I've made in the past.
I just want to share that although many times in the eyes of employers, job hop is often identified as a negative stigma/habit. It could be also viewed as a positive push where an individual is willing to take on new challenges and also takes on the risk to ride on this new endeavor. To all the people who maybe struggling on whether to stay on current job or take on new opportunities, please do not lose hope of finding a place you could spend your valuable time at! Cheers.

I think it is just not natural to consciously not befriend a fellow colleague because you see each other everyday for such long hours. I agree with Sherms that both parties need to have that maturity to know the boundaries of friendship and work relationship.

By experience, job hopping should only be attempted when one just started working (when one is in the 20syo), but job hopping should slow down or stopped by late 30s because one should have already know well by then on they want in their career & should be seeking stability in life. Job hopping gets more difficult & tiring when one hits 40yo and abv as it is no longer you choosing the companies but it is companies choosing you.

I personally think it is okay to go back to the ex-company if they give you an offer haha but tbh there's a reason why we left there and all so it really depend what is it. For me I did consider whether to go back to my ex-company when I'm looking for another job but I also wanted to explore and gain more job experience while I still young!!

Personal view : When I first moved to SG 13 years ago, I felt this. Now I know why. Maybe it’s the upbringing. I don’t face this with non SG colleagues or back in MY. I have a lot of colleagues that became great friends. Again this is my personal experience. Please don’t hate me.

You need luck to find a comfortable environment when changing jobs. But in the end it depends on what you are looking for,be it career, position, money or just comfort. Very hard to get all it right at the same time.
Eventually in the end it will be for money because once you grow your family, you need more money for your kids.

The Chinese saying”好马不吃回头草!” On the other hand “ A dog will returns to its vomit.” So its best to make sure u leave ur company w good reasons which true reasons u yourself know not just becos of salary alone. Find out more about the company u applied before signing the offer / acceptance letter. Leave happily and don’t look back.

    • @Ohthedenise

I hope that’s not the takeaway from my sharing - I was in fact admitting and trying to explain that I had very much been part of the gossip train, one that (in hindsight I can now say) I’m ashamed to have been on. Thankfully, after a recent sobering incident, my closer friends in the office and I have managed to re-evaluate our friendship and actively cut out the toxic behaviour we had (previously) unknowingly been perpetuating - in the name of “ranting” and being a pillar of support for each other. It is not my intent to paint anyone as toxic, and especially not to paint myself as a “victim”. I had a hand in the negative echo chamber we ended up in, and I’m glad to have come out of this with my friends.
