奈何桥(nai he qiao), the old lady is 孟婆 (meng po), which is an elderly female deity serving a soup (or concoction) called 孟婆汤 (meng po tang), which helps the deceased forget about their past to move on to the next life. 奈何桥 (or 奈河桥 depending on interpretation) literally translate to "bridge of helplessness", representing the emotions of the deceased when they cross over, leaving their loved ones, dreams, and regrets behind. Thank you for the great content.

I've been participating in these traditions since young cos my family is pretty religious! Actually at mandai now, we all clean up by ourselves! We will throw 2 coins to ask if its okay to remove and we'll handle the food accordingly. If it's offerings to relatives (be it death anniversary or 7th month), we bring the food home! If it's general offerings during 7th month such as those under the block, we will discard the 'opened' food and only bring home the packaged one after throwing the coins!
I think being in my 20s now, the mindset went from being fearful of the supernatural + asking for forgiveness over unintended mistakes, to respecting and acknowledging that we all co-exist in this dimension. of everything, I actually quite miss the 7th month temple banquets because I think it signifies a lot of the religious community's spirit!
I had the same epiphany as John wrt fire. At least water is a chemical compound/molecule/element, wtf is fire?? It’s neither of those and almost anything can turn into fire.

This must be popping up because it’s that time of year again. As to when the offering is no longer “sacred”, it isn’t about sacredness. The fumes from joss sticks is food for the souls. You never offer food offerings without burning joss sticks. When the joss sticks burn out, the food is considered consumed. Which is why when you eat the altar “leftovers” it always taste bland, like all the flavour is sucked out of it. You never offer the food to non-believers especially Baptised Christians. This was my grandmother’s practice and she practised as a medium chanelling deities known for “healing”. Interestingly this tri-deity appeared only in the 20th century all over South East Asia particularly Malaya. Christians are under the protection of a deity too if you use the same logic, a higher deity. It is well known that Taoist deities cannot parade pass a church when a Christian worship service is in session. BTW, the Jade Emperor is not the same as the God who is known as I Am although Taoist priests like to say He is. There is a hierarchy in the spirit world.
As for trampling over these offerings on the street, it’s disrespectful to the resident deity so you will be smitten suddenly with disease or some abnormal condition the cause of which cannot be explained medically and can only be corrected by placating the offended deity. In Taoism this might be the local Earth god, for the Malays, the call it the penunggu or Datuk. When you go to Bali, these offerings are flowers in a tray made of leaf placed seemingly indiscriminately everywhere. Same principle applies.
The 7th month is a reprieve for lost souls who have no relatives praying or making offerings for them, hence the moniker “hungry”. This aligns to the Confucian teaching on filial piety and ancestral worship. If you don’t produce offspring, you have decimated your family line and thus condemned your ancestor spirits to eternal hunger. My grandmother made provisions before she passed on to install the ancestral tablet or in our case a paper record, in a temple to ensure the ancestors will still get offerings by the masses if not from descendants. A medium assured her that her long departed husband is an overseer at the temple he founded to ensure lost souls are taken care of during the 7th month.
So, even if you don’t believe in your parents’ religion it is best to be upfront with them with your stance to allow them to make the necessary arrangements in keeping with their beliefs.

OK from what I understand, hungry ghost festival is when ghost from hell comes out.
Normal time ghost are ghost that have earthly attachment/bond(suicide, hatred) that did not pass to hell and go through the reincarnation process.
Yo Daniel! Your 7 seven period does exist. In Hindu mythology there is something called Shani(Jupiter) Dasha. You should read about it.
Fun fact: There’s said to be a reduction in flavour or sweetness to the food offerings, on a greater scale if lots of spirits had access to it. Maybe that’s why people generally don’t eat the 7th month ones?

It's ok to remove offerings (if you know how to) and quite responsible too in my opinion.
My relatives are Thai Theravada Buddhism devotees, every day they offered the offerings at the spirit houses at the corner of their house. They will remove it after a whole day; if rotten or contaminated, throw away. Turn it into compost for the plant mostly. If still ok then donated to less fortunate or distribute to others. The red water or 'blood offering' are been throw away regardless.
Sometimes they bring back offerings from temple as well. Blessed they said.
So yeah, I think devotees need to know when to clean up after making an offering and properly placing them too. Sometimes, they put offerings in the middle of the road ehh.. How? Make and arrange a proper place lhorrr... Then come to clean it up after yourselves.
Others should respect you and your practices but you should respect others too by being responsible ESPECIALLY if you are doing your rituals in PUBLIC PLACES...

Sorry to say that your facts are not correct...Please consult a bona fide Buddhist monk (not an Ajahn titled person ) and akso speak to a real Taoist priest. I've noticed that most people are not aware of what Buddhism is and what Taoism is....Thus very important to do a proper study. Thank you.. Be with Buddha.
Usually the cleaners don't throw the fruits after offerings. They will keep the fruits for their own consuming. They know what's going on with the offerings. The bridge its called 奈何桥， its for the dead not the live person. My late mother has been passed away for six years but she used to came back in transparent form or came back as a moth. Sometimes is in white transparent or light green color. And once she came back, she will stop at the photo frame that I placed her photo inside. I know its her. Sometimes she would make me dreamed of her talking to me or to gave me some gifts. There was one time, she gave me a big radio. She told me to go China, I don't know what is the reason. Maybe its because my late father's relatives stayed there in Fujian.
Yes they do exist and Cats can usually see these entities.. I know because I’ve seen how the cat reacted to one before in a friend’s home which is certified to be haunted.

the funniest thing is.. i had those shower thought moments about hell, where, almost every religion out there believes in their version of hell. what if, everyone did go to hell, but hell is a mirror of earth in the sense that there is also different currencies and "countries". just as I thought this, this video popped up on my feed. lol

Honest question from an ignorant. If it is disrespectful, let me know. I will delete. Why are the burning incense stuck on the ground and the food served to the spirits on walkways instead of putting them on a nice tables as a sign of respect? I mean, it is rude to give food on the floor/ground to living humans. Shouldn't the same respect be shown to the spirits of loved ones or spirits in general. I've asked this to a few of my taoist friends but they don't have the answer either. Or am I confusing this ritual with something else.
super interesting!!! I think its bcos of the association to the 'general spirits' + comvenience??? When my family prays from home for the 7th month general spirits/or death anniversaries for the ancestors, we will have tables and seats set up because its sort of an invitation by my household? like there is a specified addressee.
But in the situation if I am perhaps praying to the general spirits of... lets say the school field - most would put it on the ground and leave. I somehow perceive it as an open invitation for any spirits to take and go? Also, I think the concept is offering to the spirits of the ground, and introducing other elements like putting a table or object is not polite? cos I think if theres a need to pray to specific locations during 7th month, there is some aggressive(?) elements to that spot and hence it is wiser to leave it and go? OFC, i dont deny that theres a huge part on convenience where you put and go. But i think over the years, learning from my parents - we all clear the offerings after the candles burnt out if we are praying under the HDB.
also, not sure if this means anything but before we pray at mandai, there is a need to pray to the deity Tudigong 土地公 "Lord of the Soil and the Ground", and the prayers for this god are also left on the ground. So in a way, I think the concept association with the actual 'grounds' is quite important.

depends on who u are offering. my family got 2 set, 1 set on table n inside house ( for my grandparents) and 1set is outside house on floor. the burning stuff also got 2 set , in similar fashion. the offering outside the house is something akin to protection money/bribe concept , so the random wandering spirit do not disturb the residents inside the house.

Actually I used to think to myself like hey, I don’t know the chinese calendar dates and all so in the future i’m definitely not gonna be able to carry this tradition on. But after learning and realising that burning offerings are for your family that passed on and that if you don’t, it means they’ll have no food no money etc. That actually made me feel bad and realise I actually want to do it and pay respect.
I've watched few videos and apparently spirits and ghosts "eat" through smell. That's why there are lots of burning of incense and stuffs

I think the amount of time is the duration of the joss sticks or the candles (or both). As long as the joss sticks/candle remain, the prayer duration continue.
As for the bridge (奈何桥), what I heard was when a person passes away first, he/she does not know that he/she died. The wake/funeral is done to kind of "register" them into the underworld. A reason why new spirits are not exposed to mirrors/water is because the reflection reflects them to be not human (and there are people who will not be able to accept it first). For Buddhism/Taoism, the prayers and mourning period extends in order to give the spirits time to accustom to the new status and environment. Usually it lasts till the 7th week/49 days before it ends.
From the Korean movie, Along With The Gods, the 49 days can be linked to the trials that they went through. Not too sure on this.
As for monetization on their side... I got no comments but I leave it as their own system there.

loved this episode so much!!!! daily ketchup is rly starting to grow on me and my bf. we watch every episode during our meals and look forward to discussions 😂 in regards to this ep, growing up i had many doubts n queries regarding Chinese traditions. my family is not exactly religious, but my mum follows suit in my grandma’s practices and we are buddhists. two years ago however, I’ve converted to Christianity and never looked back. one of the main reasons is because there are a lot of “question marks” that I simply (by no disrespect) do not understand. i rly appreciate that we share the same doubts regarding things like “why only 7th month then pray, then what abt the other months? no ghost?” or “what happen to those ppl after they die? if we truly believe in reincarnation then why do we continue to clear their graves, celebrate 清明节 and do 七月拜拜? haven’t our loved ones already crossed the 奈何桥 to a better place?” or perhaps; what about people from other countries? they do not practice these beliefs as well. so what happens to them? or… things like - do I rly wanna believe that my poor ageing dead grandma reincarnated into a moth and came back to find me? after all that she’s been through in life, she simply became an insect???? assuming she reincarnated, meaning to say she has crossed over, did she cross over to become an insect that anyone can step on?! or that those who have grievances and refuse to leave earth, they continue to roam on this earth as spirits and never ever leave? is that why we continue to pray and do offerings? or that on the other realm, if I don’t burn incense money, paper houses or paper servants to them, does that mean my loved ones have nothing on the other side? shouldn’t the other side be somewhere safe and warm for them to reside where we all reunite again someday? growing up my parents couldn’t answer them and even some of my more religious elders would always ask me to not ask so much and “just follow”. not to mention the environmental impacts of excessive burning and irresponsible lack of cleaning up as mentioned in the video. loved the episode, please release more podcasts!!! ♥️ (would appreciate thoughts if any!!!)
As the offering normally takes place after sunsets, anyone can clean it after sunrise the following day

Those offerings that you can eat is those you offer to your family or gods. Those offered to the general “public” cannot eat. (If I’m not wrong) Important, never do offerings or prayers to the general “public” in your house area. It means you are inviting them in.

I left my Presbyterian church for good after these arguments with 1 of the ministers/elders. Went on as an atheist for 3 yrs then became religious again after witnessing paranormal, now a spiritualist. For ghost month, it's more like a month where no covid but food are abundance and free. Any prayer of any religion with intentions are useful. Below were the arguments:
Joshua 10:12 God stop the sun from moving even though actually the earth that revolves around the sun. Galileo who invented the telescope got punished by the church for saying otherwise, so did Copernicus during Martin Luther era who said "a fool who went against Holy Writ". Both were condemned as they're committing an act of heresy. Copernicus invention/book was banned in 1616 - 1822.
Matthew 4:8 Satan miraculously took Jesus “to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world” & Daniel 4:20 The tree you saw that grew large and strong, whose top reached the sky and was visible to all the earth. Imagine a basket ball that has a tree or stick. No matter how tall the tree grows, you can only see 50% of the earth & likewise
It is incorrect to say that Christianity allows its believers to hold the incense out of respect if requested to by their Buddhist/Taoist relatives. They are not allowed to hold any joss-sticks or burn any incense paper in any ritual/service related to other religions. The Buddhist/Taoist priest will also not allow any Christians to participate in any of the rituals if they (the priests) are aware of their Christian beliefs. The most that the priest will allow is that they can attend the service and stand in silence, but not participate in any burning of offerings, holding of joss-sticks, etc. It is not about being disrespectful, but about the acceptance of their offering by the underworld, and mixing of different religions.
