Sean Allen, son of the great Luke! Didn't Alex Duthart say your dad was the best drummer he'd ever heard, or something to that effect? My favorite Luke Allen bass-drumming is from the 1986 World's. His bass beats on "Brigadier Cheape," "Blair Drummond," and "Charlie's Welcome" are outrageous. When I had a car with a great stereo for bass I would blast it. I recommend everyone listen to it with headphones. The syncopation he comes up with in the march and reel is just rockin'. Best bass-drumming I've ever heard on an MSR, period; not even close. 1986 World's, "Brigadier Cheape" set.
This was my first ever CD purchase. I bought it even before I had a CD player ! Very compelling concert, held just days before the 78th Frasers became the first non-Scottish pipe band to win the World Championships at Grade 1.
@@juliareadscottishpiperandh4861 I know - I resisted buying a CD player at first, because there were no piping CDs around in the early 80-'s - that I knew of, anyway.
Piping culture, who knew? My father came from Scotland-coal miners, but they were closing the mines and throwing bombs when the old man got them the hell out of there. The homeboys were glad to be rid of them. Chicago was a much different world. I'm down at Grant Park at the Highland Games one year. And at the Ceilidh in the Grand Ballroom of the Conrad Hilton across the street these guys marched in and formed up. Everyone jumped up on their tables and started stomping and cheering. Not a lot of decorum, that's true, but you couldn't help yourself. It was emotionally and spiritually the right thing to do. A lot of these guys in their kilts, I noticed, carried 45s in their belts. And the women in their clan regalia were the most stunning and regal females I had ever seen. When the band played their signature tune, this one, the Clumsy Lover, the room went absolutely mad!!! Years later, I was talking to a guy whose brother had played with the Shannon Rovers for years. What's that tune that goes Dot Dot Dot, Dot Dot Dot, Dot Dot Dot... and thus, this became my first piping CD too. We've been going to the Highland Games now for years, our families and friends-- Irish, of course, Italians, Africans, Jews, Greeks, Slovaks, Japanese, Indians and mixtures of everything. The Games are still a spectacle, still unique, still gorgeous and rousing and fun, there's nothing anywhere to compare to them. It's still a highlight of our summers. But how lucky I was that it started with the 78th Frasers live at the Conrad Hilton in a state of Euphoria.
this is great! drum solo, harmonies in encore what a great piece too. I ended up making several changes to the sheet music I have for this so that I can play it like the 78th did
I feature this recording in my book "Scottish Music Yearbook". The book takes the reader on a year long journey through the music of Scottish composers.
the world needs a new Thin Lizzy to turn this sick riff into a proper rock n roll song
My old man's on the bass drum.
