Believe it or not I was at this show. It was my 13th birthday gift from my. I was allowed to bring one Friend. I never forget it!!
Im over here crying this is when james brown was hood!!!!! There it is!!!!!!!!
Polydor records spoiled him.
My favorite years 1972 -74.
I was at the Apollo in 73 and saw Mr. Brown for 10 shows, 2 shows a day! This is the first time I've seen concert footage of him singing 'Down N Out in NYC'.
PaulDA2000 yes it use to cost of five dollas for each show are you kidding?
@@lifeworksndhenterprisesllc6597 I remember because I sat in the middle of the middle floor seats, while he did this engagement on a Saturday night! My regret is that I should have gone to the midnight show!!!!! MISTER DYNAMITE TORE IT UP THAT NIGHT. I'LL NEVER FORGET IT. IT WAS APRIL 1973, and myself and two other Soul Brothers were with me. We traveled by bus from New Haven CT. and we were 17 years old. WOW! WE THOUGHT WE WERE GROWN!
i was at that engagement too! i was 17years old! to be exact it was in may of 73! you can also hear a little teaser of doing it too death before there it is!!
at that year he had finished the black Caesar soundtrack and movie is already in other theaters. I love the theme song of it.
butane james!!! as always he brings the funk like no other brutha could or ever will!!!!
I remember that black outfit and hat as vividly as if I was seeing it for the 1st time.
This is awesome! It’s great to see JB in this era!
Can u imagine how awesome 'Slaughter Theme' would be in concert? As far as I know he never sang it live, or at least I never heard him sing it the 40 plus times I saw him live in 1973 and 1974.
Greetings, JB ,sings it live on Johnny Carson show 73'
@@rahmanmadison4967 oh I know that. I’ve seen that many times I said I’ve never seen him sing in concert.
At 7:07 when he goes into "ANTS IN MY PANTS" all bets are off and we 're off to the races.
I was at these shows...BLISTERING FUNK!!!
Good God!
Me Too! I was there!
@@williamparker3328 blessings to you brother Parker!
There's only one James Brown!
The hat that he wore made him uncharacteristically
cool.
You're right! GFOS!!!
That's the Payback hat!
@@jamesgraham3116 Goot Gawd !
When he became "The Godfather of Soul".
down and out in new york city wow he never played this live
james is even in character...
That’s exactly what I was thinking the whole time!!😂
The best for ever !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
man this is so great.....
The best ❤️✨🎶🎶
Jab, Jimmy & Fred Thomas really showing out
Wow! 'Sportin' Life', 'There It Is' ,I Got a Bag of My Own' 'Ants in My Pants'!!!!! The only time I hears 'I've Got Ants In My Pants' was in Hartford, CT in 1973. I made a cassette recording of that concert, sent it to a guy in the Netherlands and he sent it to someone who posted it on UA-cam. Try to find it, it's out of sight!
the best stuff of jbs 71-75 was the soul train shows.
"do you belieeeeeeeve it!! Classic
This is some great footage ✌🏿
valeu meu brother! Imagina este show inteiro com a tecnologia de hoje em HD alta definição. Puro show! james brown não vai aparecer nem em outra encarnação. este foi e sera sempre o Nº 1
When he was at his best.
Its pretty deep to see Donald Warden, aka Al Mansour, doing the M.Cing in the intro! He was a local activist and author here in Oakland, CA, worked with James Brown on the "Don't Be a Drop Out" campaign and many other community initiatives in the late '60s. Recently deceased as well.
OMGoodness I just got back from the movies: 'Get on up,' starring Chadwick Boseman as the Godfather of Soul. It's AWESOME just go!
"Good Foot" was originally in this footage. Don't know why it was edited out.
Was there
Wouaw!!! Incredible and very rare!!!
I just seen a hi definition clip of this concert on the new JB documentary. I know the entire concert is somewhere.
hey this is tony and you're still # 1 but this cat is coming at ya hard! see if you can find footage of j.b. on mike douglas 69 when the show was ending he played top of the stack with the band! but ya gotta keep on pushing jack like curtis mayfield and the impressions! taken from j.b. america is my home!
can somebody find more footage from 1973 cos he's set has never been better. there it is, ants in my pants i bet he did the boss too if you had this whole concert.
欧米でも日本でもベルボトムのパンツが流行っていた頃だ。私がJBを知ったのは、高校生だったこの時代だ。man’s man’s man’s worldは衝撃的だった!
それから半世紀以上経つ。そして今でも聞いている。進歩がないのかな?(w)
At 4:03 Mr. Brown yelled out "Pass The Peas" but that song was cut out. I wonder if a video tape exists if this whole concert or a concert from that period in excellent condition and full concert?
PaulDA2000
And right after he calls out Pass the Peas, you here a short snippet of "Doing it to Death."

Polydor era James Brown
1972 -73.
JB can out sang his records live.
Especially, "Down and Out In New York City" cause now that is a hell of a vocal he sang for that song. Nothing but a full blast of energy when he hits that last scream all in the moment.
Many people don't know that the "shoot" routine that he did for over 30 years when performing "Get On The Good Foot" live originated from the studio version of the song "I Got A Bag of My Own", shown here in the live version starting at 5:50.
Michael Jackson carried on that same type of "freeze and pose" dance routine in his tours later on but before that the Jacksons were doing that as well later towards the Triumph era and Victory era when they still was the Jacksons.
tHAT'S RIGHT BRO PAUL! I REMEMBER IT LIKE YESTERDAY!!
You know it. I remember him doing it that way!
Hey Paul, which Era would you say that Mister Dynamite had his very best band! Get back to me please sir?
@@williamparker3328 I would think 1966 through 1969.
Can you convert that cassette to cd? If you could make me a copy that would be great! I'd send you some more JB stuff.
What are some of the other songs before and after that song where he sings "I sit down and I wonder"? Then I can pin point the album and the song. It's eluding me right now lol.
This was a jewel, but what's with the focus on the lights ? You're missing great dance moves to film lights ?
During the 1972 presidential election, James Brown openly proclaimed his support of Richard Nixon for reelection of the presidency over Democratic candidate George McGovern.[52] The decision led to a boycott of his performances and, according to Brown, cost him a big portion of his black audience.[53] As a result, Brown's record sales and concerts in the United States reached a lull in 1973 as he failed to land a number-one R&B single that year. Brown relied more on touring outside the United States where he continued to perform for sold-out crowds in cities such as London, Paris and Lausanne. That year, Brown also faced problems with the IRS for failure to pay back taxes, charging he hadn't paid upwards of $4.5 million, five years earlier, the IRS claimed he owed nearly $2 million.[54]
that's right
Its sad just because you have a different opinion of somethings people will just all the sudden turn on you. That to me is just wrong. James Brown was a good man. just ain't right.
You're right!! Those same idiots also have a right!! Regardless to that everyone used and danced to his funky beats!! I'm one of his biggest fans!!!
'The studio version of I Wanna Be Around' is originally from the Smash LP 'Out Of Sight' but that LP was withdrawn when King Records filed an injunction from him that only let him play instrumentals on Smash. It was officially released on the 'Cold Sweat' album. Interestingly it's called 'I Want To Be Around' on the 'Cold Sweat' album and 'I Wanna Be Around' on the Smash album.'I Wanna Be Around' is the correct title.
👍
Thanks, get wait to get it! Did you listen to that 10 second JB tape yet? I think there are over 700 songs on there.lol.
there's many audio and new vinyl releases from this period but I guess what we saw in Zaire and soul power movie is only pristine on celluoid that is available.
Ik this comment is 6 years old but I don’t think Zaire was the only “pristine” one. There’s a 2003 documentary of James and it shows like 2 short snippets of him from THIS show and it was in pristine High Definition. There’s also the 1974 ABC in concert performance that is in pristine condition but only one song from that first concert was officially released. All of these shows could be “remastered” and released but nobody is financing it. at least not that we know of at the moment.
the out of sight lp on smash was withdrawn during the lawsuit so james gave smash instrumentals. they actually reissued the album with a track missing. one issue of it was a double lp that had both out of sight and jb plays jb today and yesterday. songs on the cold sweat album was dubbed from acetates of out of sight, thats prolly why it sounds a lil with treble. the songs on that1967 album were dated but was a good vehicle for cold sweat.i find his version of fever nice next to cold sweat.
What's the title of this first song?- I'm feeling it!
@Ike Dyson thanks
What did you say it was lol?
I think Paul McCartney played all the instruments on his first solo album.
"I'm never the boss I'm still the head nigga in charge!" That's what happens when your eyes look at lean cuts of meat but you eat only the worst parts of meat! When he was chasing and marrying black women, it reflected in his music and his stage shows, after he went over to the white side, Nixon seemed like an intelligent choice for a man that was never known for his intellect!
The Camera man needs to be fined yes for this show. ....... I know it's too late now.
She was sure asking some stupid questions.
