We bought a broken Fiat Tipo that doesn't run!!!

  • Jim put in a cheeky bid on a non-running 1995 Fiat Tipo 1.6 SX Liberty on eBay an hour before the auction ended, and accidentally managed to win it. Siôn was then tasked with going to collect the car, and then set about trying to get the Tipo to actually run. Perhaps it is the Gemini aftermarket alarm and immobiliser?

Factory fitted immobiliser systems started coming in with the fiat range in 1994 with the 172 punto. Easy way to tell if your fiat has an Immobiliser is the ignition key should be blue. A thin black one like that has no transponder chip and therefore it would only have an Immobiliser if aftermarket. Models with factory fitted systems also had a red master key which was required to code replacement keys to the ECU.

I've always loved the type 160 Fiat Tipo since I was a kid. The Tipo deserves to be a modern classic, so well done for buying your Tipo! Best of luck in getting it back to health.

Has soon as I saw the Rev counter not registered any rpms when cranking I knew it was a crank sensor.
Just a little tip that I have discovered over the years

Nice bit of diagnosis, my money would have been on the fuel pump which I've had to replace twice now on my Alfa 145, well done you, lovely car by the way!

Given that Salvo Montalbano, as a character, never appears to be interested in material possessions, the Tipo was a perfect fit. Old but not classic and definitely not cool, it's exactly the sort of car you'd expect such a character to drive in Sicily, where the series was set. Cars tend to have a longer lifespan there, and over-30-years-old Fiats still are pretty common on the road. Congratulations on your purchase Jim!

Well done. I bought a 1.4S, when it was new, and had an identical failure when it was about three years old. It was quickly diagnosed and replaced by the AA patrolman.

I thoroughly enjoyed your step by step diagnosis and troubleshooting. You are a very smart man! 😉
The Tipo is an absolutely lovely color, both inside and out, and although it’s never a car I would have gone for in a million years, if I had actually wanted a Tipo, this color scheme would have been top of my list, so I totally condone Jim’s decision to put a bid on it… and WIN the bidding! 🥳 🙌

Such a fabulous video Sion and Jim it brought back many memories back of our Tipos my parents had a racing red 1.7 diesel Tipo S (model below yours) and my brother had petrol blue metallic 1.7 DS we had them on 1 August 1994 and both had consecutive plates M453JOP and M452JOP!
Such brilliant cars so much room and space inside always remember the economy of the 1.7 non turbo diesel dad went from home near Birmingham to Devon with hardly any diesel used he thought gauge was broken!
Would love another now look forward to seeing more of this! Daniel

Had a fiat tipo sedicivalvole as my second car. 1989 F plate. Got it in 1995. Dark red. Brilliant car. Unfortunately I crashed it in the snow at about 10mph into the back of a brand new Renault Safrane. Wrote the Safrane off folded up like a tin car. Boot floor both rear wings. I had a broken plastic grill and a cracked number plate! Sold it about 6months later and got a Fiat Coupe 16vt

Great to have it fixed. Never had a tipo as it was above what I could afford at the time. They've just vanished off the roads. It does look well. Had a similar alarm back in the day and installers could get away with serious bodgery as long as they got your money you'd never know until it packed up 😪
Might see it if it's at car's and coffee sometime in dundalk 🤗👍🇮🇪

Congratulations! I was mildly obsessed with the Tipo when it launched - I thought it was brilliant. Got to drive a 2.0 8v GT a few years later, and it didn’t disappoint - these are great fun cars. I’ve also driven the Coupe FIAT and have owned an Alfa 145 - both cars spun off the same platform - and they were very entertaining cars with excellent handling. Good to see a Tipo preserved - they are extremely rare now!

I did wnder at the outset whether it was crank sensor related, although they tend to fail once they get warm, so will start from cold and run for about 10 minutes. That is how the crank sensor on our 1.6 Punto failed. I now carry a spare, just in case!
Interesting to see your ecu is Bosch. The ecu and ignition components on the 1.6 Punto are GM.

I can remember pushing my mums Fiat Tipo everywhere to get it going as a kid, it was a 1988 F and less than 5 years old at the time. Eventually the inevitable happened and it caught fire and was written off in November 94.
I was distressed to find out that it was repaired and lived until 2004.
    Nice dashboard though.
