    I want to tell this teacher that he is totally right in his way of explaining the right way to learn a language. I have had a very big problem in understanding spoken English because I've spent all my life thinking and writing is the correct way of learning English. When someone is speaking I have to make a great mental effort to follow him or her, except that program of VOA learning English because they speak at a lower speed. Now I have discovered my problem. Even when I have a large written large vocabulary and I understand it when I have to speak or to listen someone speaking I have difficulties. From now on I'm going to concentrate in listening as much as I can even when I don't understand everything. Thanks to this up-dated advice from this teacher.

    Great principles: the more I've torn myself from books and immersed myself in phonology and recordings, the better I've become at retaining words and understanding what is said to me.. my own capacity for self-expression then needs some extra practice which doesn't come immediately from these listening skills, but with this base of familiarity in aural comprehension, I can normally feel better saying something that conveys the point and maintains the thread of the conversation.

    This is very interesting. I have a young child, she is 3, she is talking, she is talking a lot. But she can't read or write, she learnt by listening and mimicking what is said. Associating sounds with objects and actions. Interesting concept. Thank you.

    Great presentation and nice, fresh idea. I very much agree that we don’t put enough stock into listening/ hearing. I’m teaching in Japan and the government has basically said that everybody has to take a 4-skills English test to get into public universities. Previously, the tests were overwhelmingly grammar with a spoonful of listening and a smidge of speaking. Plus, the grammar and reading would be at like B1 level, and the listening and speaking would be at A1 because there was never any dedicated practice for speaking and listening and people would expect to do like 2 practices the week before and pass. Meanwhile, these same kids will practice baseball for 3 hours a day, 6 days a week.
    Also totally agree on people giving up immediately on languages. Maybe it’s because of the understanding factor. Like, even if you can’t backflip, you kind of understand how it works, so all you have to practice is the execution. As adults, I think people are really uncomfortable with not understanding. And so they go the route that promotes the quickest understanding. Here, that’s translating all the English into Japanese. But it often means they never become a natural user of the foreign language. It’s like if you have broken your leg and can’t afford crutches. The best thing to do is to stay off your feet, but the bills won’t pay themselves, so you hobble around the minute you aren’t screaming in pain. So your leg heals funny. It gets stronger and stronger, but it never fully heals because you did what was easy for the short-term. In the end, you have to chose between a sub-par leg forever, or re-breaking the leg and healing it the right way. Same with languages.
    PS, sounds like you have a great system. But I’m not a big fan of the websites. It feels too infomercials, which automatically makes my “this is a scam!” radar go off. Also, it would be nice, if you detailed or demonstrated the later steps more. How are the conversation stages done, for example. I’m no expert, so that’s just a random, personal opinion.

    aaawesome! Finally someone who's thinks like me! Please, please, please put this in schools. I especially would like to see you in Japan where nobody cares about speaking and pronouciation, but ONLY about reading, writing and grammar. You should not have a company, but rather working for countries directly! Please help the kids getting tortured by teachers with bad teaching methods and wrong pronounciation

    Top-notch video! Many thanks to the author of the channel for the recommendations! The problem with many people is that they want to take a "magic pill" or get "secret knowledge" and immediately have skills and abilities. However, the truth of life is that knowledge, skills, and abilities do not come by themselves. You can't learn a foreign language without doing anything, without wasting your time and effort, just like you can't learn to ride a bike lying on a comfy couch, listening to lectures and watching videos about "modern methods of learning" on a bike. To really learn something, you have to really practice every day. You're going to fall down while you're learning, and you're going to get bumps - that's normal! The ups and downs of learning are an integral part of our lives. Motivation from success and depression from failure will always be your study companions. However, every student has problems in his or her studies that he or she lacks the knowledge to solve. It can be: poor memorization of words; no progress in language learning; the student can speak, but does not understand speech by ear; misunderstanding of grammar; incorrect pronunciation, etc. Agree that a problem you don't know how to solve is very demotivating. In order to find the answer to our question we have to spend a lot of time to read videos, articles and books by polyglots. In today's world, we have to solve problems as quickly as possible. I don't have time to study and analyze a huge amount of information. My goal is to master the basic knowledge of a foreign language as quickly as possible and already start earning money effectively in the international arena. I settled on the practical guide by Yuriy Ivantsiv " Polyglot's Notes: practical tips for learning foreign language". This book is always in my bag. If I have a problem while learning a language, I quickly find the answer in this book. There are many different techniques and tips for learning a foreign language in Polyglot Notes. I have made my own individual schedule and plan for language learning. Now I know what I am going to study, how I am going to study, when I am going to study and what results I am going to achieve. No problem could stop me! With an effective language learning plan my professional skills are more and more in demand internationally every day. Friends, don't stop there! Everyone has talents that millions of people around the world need! Learn the language and make your ideas and dreams come true! Thanks to the author of the channel for the informative and useful video! Your videos motivate me.

    I'm an English teacher and I'm REAL good at teaching pronunciation, but it's difficult to listen to a Thai or Chinese kid saying an English word and then correct them. I do it every day. I use a lot of drills and use a lot of different voices (angry, bored, exstatic, scared etc.). I politiley mimic mistakes, encourage babbling and childish phonemic games and try to keep it all fun.

    What I've noticed in these polyglot stories is that they talk a lot about how bad the methods used in schools are but never give any ready made solutions that I might be able to use in a classroom full of people from many different backgrounds. I want to see how you actually DO it rather than watch you talk about it!

    • @barrysteven5964

      Great point. They're great at pointing out how the classroom is not a great place to learn languages and it's true really. Languages are pretty much self taught. But it doesn't help teachers faced with 30 kids and a syllabus enforced from above to get through and the threat of losing their jobs if the kids don't get through their exams.

      @@barrysteven5964 I thought he broke it down pretty clearly with the example from 22:26 to 23:50. I'm sure you're not expecting him to just give you his whole course for free, but if you are expecting Polyglots to save you from losing your job that's a problem with the authority enforcing the system not the language learning community.

    • @barrysteven5964
      @barrysteven5964 4 роки тому +4

      @@Kojitsu I AM a part of the language learning community!! I'm was a language teacher and am a self-taught polyglot. I know what works for me when I'm learning a language and encouraged my pupils to know how to use these methods independently and incorporated them as much as was humanly possible in the given reality of the classroom. You are however correct that the problem lies with the authorities enforcing a system which is in my view inappropriate. I think languages should be approached in schools something more like music or sports ie a skill to be acquired with practice over a period of time rather than an academic subject to be crammed for an important exam. In this respect though the teachers are also victims of the system. Referring back to Marcin Ratajczyk's comment, it struck a cord with me because you do hear a lot of open or implied criticism of language teachers from people who frankly have little idea what it's like in reality. We would love to help teenagers acquire a language the way we do as polyglots and if you gave us the small groups, the hours of daily access as well as the access to supplies and carefully graded individually targetted materials and got rid of the exam system - maybe we could. Meanwhile.

    Scar Face, Scarf Face and Cigar Face walked into a pub. Cigar Face sat down and had a whine, whilst Scar Face sat down and had a wine. Scarf Face proceeded to recite a Chinese poem...
    施氏食狮史。。。 He was interrupted by a snake. Scarf face said this: "His hiss is Istanbul-like. Is that where he's from?" Cigar Face threw a book at him and said, "Know." And then Scar Face got angry at Cigar Face, shouting, "Know you do not!"

    Hmmmmm...... I'm learning Chinese at the moment, and this advice really isn't helping at all. In a language where many words sound exactly identical to each other, and then many more sound almost exactly identical. (Chinese people speak so fast there is not enough time for any kind of musical tones to sound!) And then in addition many more sound so extremely close you would hear whatever you were told it was supposed to be - then if you were told it changed you would hear the new version instead, because people don't speak clearly. Chinese is ABSOLUTELY IMPENETRABLE by mainly listening. You need to be TOLD what you are hearing before you can learn to hear it!

    • @murilocaruy
      @murilocaruy 5 років тому +6

      Well, that depends man. I've found really easy to mistake similar words like 眼睛 and 眼镜, but people will mostly forgive your mistakes and the actual meaning depends on the context anyway. I focused so much on reading that my reading was like HSK5 while my listening was like HSK3, understanding chinese by listening only is tough but we must do it.
      Let me give you a tip. Look for TED talks in chinese and activate chinese subtitles, then download an extension called Zhonwen chinese popup dictionary. Try watching it, if it's too fast hit pause, if you don't know the meaning of the word mouse over the subtitles and the dictionary will give you the meaning. Good luck!
