Steve Kaufmann - How many words do we need to know? [EN] - PG 2017

  • Traditional language instruction places importance on producing the language correctly, even in the early stages of learning the language. This dictates an emphasis on grammar, on guided conversation, working in pairs, and artificial scenarios like going through customs, buying a train ticket, etc. Is this necessary? Can working on comprehension, both written and oral, gives us a better base for the long term development of competence in a new language?
Comprehension implies knowing words. The more authentic and interesting the learning content, the more words we need. Some knowledge of grammar is necessary for comprehension, but the degree of grammar accuracy needed for comprehension is much lower than for speaking. It is the gaps in our vocabulary, not in our grammar knowledge, that constitute the greatest obstacle to comprehension.
The ultimate goal is accurate usage of the language. This means correct word usage and a comfortable control of grammar rules. Confronting the norms of grammar without sufficient exposure to the language can be frustrating. On the other hand, striving to master grammar and usage after considerable passive exposure to the language has many advantages.

Good video! My brother studied languages at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in California. The pace of study was intense. Students had to master the language course in 36-64 weeks. Psychologically it was very difficult, but fortunately he was helped by Yuriy Ivantsiv's book "Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign languages”. The book " Polyglot Notes" became a desk book for my brother, because it has answers to all the problems that any student of a foreign language has to face. Thanks to the author of the channel for this interesting video! Good luck to everyone who studies a foreign language and wants to realize their full potential!

Without review, the forgetting curve applies, so for words that are not repeated in the text, they are soon forgotten and although I think Steves approach to language learning is spot on, I think he would be surprized at the large number of words that he forgets the meaning of. Periodic review strengthens memories.

Ok, if you want to learn the most important words in a language that supplies about 80% of all speech language, so then of course that any content that you consume have these words, and of course that context is the most efficient way to learn a language and of course that if the words appears frequently in the content you will learn them. Anki is just a resource to don't forget specific things, i think tha Anki is good to learn a alphabet, phonology, tones and lowest frequence words but it's just not worth use anki to learn frequent words and all of the words that appears. And no, if you want to learn the language in a effective way you don't need to learn the words that appears fewer times because the words that appears more times are more important, and when you have a vast vocabulary and want to improve more it's just a matter of read like all of the greatest writters and erudite people do, read books of good authors with good use of the language will improve naturally your vocabulary.

Hey there, just a question. Is it really true that Arabic has 10 different words for table??? as the guy on 41:58 has said? It's honestly doesn't make sense... then you could say that Arabic is the richest language in the world , and I sincerely doubt that. I'm willing to bet that he confuses "words" with variations of the same word. As for example in English there are a few synonyms for a table , for example: desk, table, workbench etc. Those could be considered different words. And for example in Russian you have a million different endings, suffixes, predispositions etc as well as word combining and classifications, which make the same root word "стол" sound different and describe it's different variants and your relation to them... and it's not gonna be hard to distinguish between them, but they can not be considered different words , but rather as the same word that god enhanced or modified. Is that the same thing in Arabic? or do you really have 10 different, unrelated words for a table? which are not modifications of the same word? thanks.

@@korana6308 In fact, what I would like to mention is the same exemple as Steve Kaufmann made, when he spoke about Donald Trump, despite being the president of the great developed country, but he has a B2 level in English probably just intermediate higher and, we still easily understood him, whitout any problem this is the point ,,, Nobody has the C2 in any language, even the native speakers, although there is a certain category who have C1 or C2 that has been evaluated according to some exams based on very general standards, without taking certain personal and cultural aspects; because we live in a the time where there are a lot of stereotypical thoughts, and ulterior motives, which I really felt in your comment, but I really enjoyed interacting with good reasoning that you just gave with a good established facts, well done !!! so far i have a personal experience when i started learning german i just had a lot of stereotypes in my head about this language, "... it's very difficult, especially the grammar and pronunciation ... "but when I started to learn this language with a real motivation and a lot of desire to know more about this language, I was really disappointed to know why I had not learned this language earlier . Unfortunately it is the same case with Arabic or Chinese and many other languages, which have been affected by the media and many other reasons,,,,,, to cite the example of "Table" it is not really a big deal ,,, it's just one of the few words that has this exception in arabic language, and I think Steve Kaufmann didn't quite understood why the word "Table" has a lot of synonyms,,,,, because this word certainly doesn't have equivalent in foreign language, that's why it has a lot of synonyms, it's not my opinion but I learned this from our professor of linguist at the university as a student in French language.

I think it can be best stated that languages are not learned; they are experienced. Once experienced enough for a long enough period, a given language becomes familiar. This familiarity results in an ability to express oneself in that realm of familiarity. That self-expression, when understood by others who communicate in the given language can be noted as fluency. Alas, language has been acquired.

Answer to the title at 20:39. He says 30 000 - 40 000 words are enough for him to read, counting each form of a word as a different word (e.g. “car” and “cars” are two words). I have no idea what this translates to in “base” words.

    • @Michaelatkins15

Ayrton Senna based on my experience it accounts for 10-15 thousand base words.

    • @TypicalRussianGuy
      @TypicalRussianGuy 4 роки тому +7

That would be around 4000-5000 base words in a typical European language.
In fact, if you already speak English, you can confidently say you will need to learn a couple of thousand words less (or is it a couple of thousand words fewer, haha).
In any case, the base ''golden'' number so to say is about 4000 words. After that, the learning becomes semi-automatic and after about 10000, it automatizes almost completely.

I'm extremely confused at to how he treats homonyms then? Words that are written exactly the same but have different meanings or different accents.
For example in Russian : "зАмок" - a castle ,"замОк" - a lock. Or "рУчка" - could be either a handle, a pen or a hand (there's also some other niche interpretations).
That counting system is extremely flawed.

Hello steve. This is off topic but an important topic that perhaps you would discuss in a seperate post. When I am reading along in German I understand what is going on in the story and all of a sudden I am lost and I no longer understand what I am reading. What usually happens is that I am reading a dialog between two or more characters and I look up some words and in the process lose tract of who the speaker is. A simple example in english is as follows: Harry and Ron were discussing the intrigueng nature of the abtract effervesence and he said “ I disagree. “ at this point I am lost and no longer understand what I am reading because I don’t know which person the “ he” is. Surelly I have missed some clue that the auther has given as to who the “ he “ is. What sort of clues am I missing, or what am I missing that would indicate who the speaker “ he “ Is ??? I wonder if other people have this problem when reading German stories and if this problem is unique to German and how to fix this problem.

    Hi people,
    3 questions:
1- does anyone know where we can buy these 'flashcards', which i guess, have some kind of picture/drawing/language1 on one side, and the respective definition, in plain text(language2), on the other side ?
2- are there any pc, or android apps, where we can create lists of words we want to learn/already learned, create quizzes, eventually import images, etc etc ?
3- what is the best pc/android website or app, that allows people to communicate with other people, via voice or/and video chat, for free? (Or eventually paid)
Eg: a spanish girl that is learning german, she searches some people that speak german fluently, and also knows a bit of spanish.
This must be the best method, to practice a language with someone, without having to travel to whatever country that uses that language.

The real answer is 3000 words for B2 and 5000 words for C1. Use the OxfordLearnersDictionaries list. The approximate breakdown is 750/A1, 1500/A2, 2250/B1, 3000/B2, 5000/C1, 10,000/C2

@@gardnerdean 10,000 C2 to talk? I don't think so. To read is much more, if you don't read literature and fiction books you will not understand what i'm saying. Just try to read Shakespeare, Homer, Dante and Virgil, or even plays and poems, it's really vast and difficult the vocabulary, and to be a real educated person you need to know more words than you think that, mainly in academic studies and researches that is natural to the people who try to develop a carrer do. In a book called "The loom of language" by Frederick Bodmer says that to learn a language to talk you need to know a limited quantity of words by heart, and to learn a language to read you need to learn thousands and thousands of words but in a vaguely way. I really recommend this book.

Learning a language is one thing, to know every word is another. It depends of your aim, to lecture on classic literature won't required the same level than chatting with a flight attendant. There's a choice : speaking well multiple languages or master perfectly 1 or 2 languages.

@@martinet1985 I agree totally. The one thing you always need to keep in mind when you watch the plethora of videos on UA-cam by polyglots telling you the 'best' way to learn a language is that whatever they suggest it might not work for you. You have to just try a lot of different ways and see what works. I have learned from experience that I have really poor recall of words that I come across in print but really excellent recall of words I hear in context ie in a conversation etc. Therefore the massive reading thing doesn't really advance me so quickly. I spend a lot of time watching videos instead. Same with the spaced repetition thing. I've broken my heart over those damn things until I just had to accept that for whatever reason my brain doesn't respond to seeing words on a screen no matter how many times it's repeated and how well it's spaced. They just never advance past my short term memory. Yet the Gold list method does work for me and I've no idea why. Shop around and find what works.

He learned a lot of language, can speak in a lot of languages and is really respected in the polyglot community, but i think that if he learned a lot of languages and he is good in be a linguist so then he must know something that is really useful, and yes he knows! This works for me, maybe don't work for you but don't try to misrepresent a person's image by your own opinion, mainly in a subject that experience is much important than opinion. For he the input base is the most effective and and fastest way to learn a language, of course that Anki, Pismleur and other limited methods will not please he and everyone who is a real polyglot knows that this methods don't work if you want to learn a language for real.

Polyglot Gathering, you needed to ask this question for a linguistic. I have respect for Steve Kaufmann, but, day by day, he turns into a salesman. I stopped listening to him because I can't hear about LingQ anymore. I'm neither an English teacher nor a linguist. Sometimes, people prefer "widespread knowledge" to knowledge scientific.
Nowadays, we have "popular communism", "popular liberalism", "popular capitalism", "popular socialism", etc., but, we also have "popular linguistics" and it's getting annoying. Every person has the right to speak about what he wants, but we need to have science as our reference.
But, maybe you are thinking: Steve Kaufmann always cites generative linguistics (Noam Chomsky). But what about the other scientific models and other linguistics that he doesn't mention? When we have only one scientific model, we create a belief and we have no choice because choice involves possibilities.
