Joni Mitchell’s Big Yellow Taxi - “they paved paradise put up a parking lot” - so timely. Oh, all that and a grrreat song too.
The Counting Crows did an excellent cover of that song but nothing will match Joni's version.
@@bevonae8023 right!?! “Don’t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone”, perhaps more relevant today than it ever was.
Why can't I hit like 50x when I need too?
Hey farmer , farmer put away the DDT
.Give me spots on my apples but leave me the birds and the bees PLEASE ...even more true today with Monsanto etc pushing Insecticides etc on to farmers in India & Africa who have never needed them before and don't need them now . Put the farmers into debt to land grab . Land that their great great grandparents had farmed . Leading hundreds to commit suicide . Look it up ..You don't hear these things on your mainstream media....✌🌍. R. I. P to each and everyone of them and their families. Sorry a bit off topic . Just made me think of it .
One of my all time favorites!
This song's melody is so complex yet the overall effect is so straightforward and communicates Joni's message so clearly. This is the mark of an absolute genius-level songwriter.
She survived childhood polio, taught herself the piano, and tuned her guitar differently than the norm. She is her own genre, a musical genius.
i never knew all that, thank you, very eloqently put, she is all her own and as you say 'a musical genius'
Carol King "It's too late" and "So far away", Maria Muldaur "Midnight at the oasis", Janis Ian "At seventeen", Rita Coolidge "Higher and higher", Carly Simon "You're so vain"... there's so many
Excellent suggestions!
This is a spectacular list. I’d add Blue Bayou and Ooh Baby as sung by Linda R. I also personally adore Boys in the Trees and You Belong to Me by Carly Simon.
Great list, thank you! I'd just add Bobby Gentry's classic "Ode to Billie Joe"
And as a side note, (almost completely) anything and everything by Joni or Carol King is well worth the time.
No one else sounds remotely like Joni Mitchell. "Big Yellow Taxi," "Free Man in Paris."
Yes exactly
To me, groups like Steely dan did sometimes (Any major dude, Ricki don't loose that number, etc.). Some singer songwriter artist and groups in Europe as well (although possibly influenced by her).
Woodstock.
Jay and Amber Joni was HUGE IN the 70s HUUUUGE This was 1975
wat
"Both Sides Now" (original recording) "Big Yellow Taxi, Circle Game, River" She has a deep catalogue of music. Canadian icon.
I would argue that Both Sides Now is her all time best song. It tells a meaningful story about life love and it is so beautifully melancholy.
@@jediciah37 "I've looked at love from both sides now. From up and down and still somehow, it's loves illusion I recall."
@@jediciah37 I would counter with Coyote or River, but I could get on board with Both Sides Now.
"Her sound": spot on. So unique, what a first-class, out of this world song-writer.
Joni’s musical journey start in early 60s folk, late 60s early 70s folky hippie, then onto jazzy music from 1975 onward. So much change throughout the years. She is one the most influential singer song writers around. Yeah Canada.
Part of the Canadian Invasion...
Isn't this one from 1974? It find it pretty jazzy already :)
Definitely one of Canada's finest exports.
Joni's lyrics are so intimate and real, and her voice makes some real heartbreak sound beautiful. PLEASE go further and try "A Case of You" or "River"; they're amazing.
Two of her BEST by far....what a Canadian and worldly talent she is.
I liked her original 70's version of "Big Yellow Taxi" too.
Yes, two of my very favorite songs from her Blue album
Yes, I agree with these two song suggestions!!!!!
River still gets to me hard time
Try Carol King “It’s too Late” you will love it
Definitely Carole King. An underrated singer/storyteller of her generation
Her whole tapestry album was my favorite as a teen.I played it till I couldn't anymore
“Too Much Rain” “Tapestry” and “ Where You Lead”
Yes!!! Anything from the Tapestry album is great!!
@@pattyestrada6 hard to pick just one from that album. Natural woman was hers but oh with Aretha singing it. She sang it to the Obamas with Carole next to Michelle. Smackwater Jack just the whole dang thing.
Joni is a legendary musician. Considered by many to be one of the greatest songwriters, particularly lyrically. Of course she also has the voice of an angel and is stunningly beautiful as well. She's also respected among guitar players for her use of unique open tunings and unusual chord changes. So glad that you two reacted to one of her great songs. Well done!
Joni is a legend. One of them best musicians of the past 100 years. Her lyrics are poetry, her style is so varied, and her musicianship is unmatched. There is no well deeper than hers for amazing music.
Joni Mitchell is amazing! She sang Big Yellow Taxi and it is a multigenerational song that can still apply to society now!
Yea, that song is amazing!!
CAROL KING!!!!! Her album "Tapestry" was in every teenagers collection in the early 70's.You HAVE to do her some Friday!!!!!!!
There is not a bad song on the Tapestry album. Truly a classic. And yes, I graduated High School in 74
@@terryrogers8304 As did I. We ALL had Tapestry , either the record or 8-track (huh?).
@@roguealien These guys don't know what an 8-track was (played continuously, but on some albums it would click to a new track in the middle of a song; hated that)
@@terryrogers8304 1976 for me Terry.
@@roguealien Album here! One of my favorite high school albums.
Joni is a living legend and my favorite female artist of all time. I grew up listening to her music. "A Case of You", "Carey", "River", "Raised on Robbery", "Circle Game", & "Coyote" ... so, so many great songs, I could list them all day!! The greatest singer/songwriter/artist, she's the G.O.A.T. imo. Thank you for doing some Joni! ☮&❤
I love Carey!!!!
Joni is pure talent and class! She's also a prolific painter, that's one of her self portraits at around 3:40 of this video where the bridge of the song begins
Her singing Woodstock, which she wrote because she missed it is fabulous. Or her singing Coyote at the Last Waltz is a must! Thanks guys!
Coyote at Last Waltz is killer, but I just watched Rolling Thunder Revue last night and she tries it out on some friends of hers. I think you might like it: ua-cam.com/video/zeaO5UZ5OcI/v-deo.html
Yeah, the Last Waltz is awesome.
@@pigmeatmarkham898 Thanks!
Love Coyote from the Last Waltz!
CSN makes Woodstock a good time song. She, on the other hand, makes it a spiritual experience.
FINALLY!!! Joni is just amazing, her songwriting, her voice. Please react to “A Case of You” The entire Blue album is a must. ❤️❤️❤️
Yes but I’d say the first 5 are all vital.
70's ladies of note: Carole King, Carly Simon, Linda Ronstadt, Joni Mitchell, Bonnie Raitt, Heart, Donna Summer, Barbra Streisand... Can't go wrong with any one of them.
Pheobe Snow and Ricki Lee Jones!!
Don't forget Melanie.
All these, yup
Joni Mitchell is one of the all time best song writers. So many of her songs were recorded by other artists. She was a great guitarist and pianist. Her voice is absolutely amazing.
You guy’s have old souls, love this song🙋🏻♀️
A couple of other very talented female singer-songwriters from this era are, Carole King and Carly Simon.
These ladies are legend ❤️❤️
Carly Simon is an excellent singer!
SOOOOOOO waiting so these two! They are ICONIC!!
Might add Judy Collins to this group.
It's somewhat disappointing how few reaction videos there are to Carly and Carole's music. People are really missing out by not listening to them.
Joni Michell wrote “Woodstock” for Crosby, Stills &Nash, one of the ultimate hippie songs.
I don't think she wrote it for them, I just think that since she was with Graham at the time she let them record it. But I may be wrong, I often am...
Joni is a genius! Plain and simple. First class songwriter, musician, and poet. A beautiful spirit. Listen to as much of her music as you can!
Yeah! You are finally hitting Joni. This woman is a Master singer songwriter and has influenced so many other artists. Her album "Blue" recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, which is considered a masterpiece. I highly recommend you listen to her songs "A Case Of You", "Raised On Robbery" and "River", just to name a few.
Agree. And she is an amazing guitarist. I believe it was David Crosby, maybe Graham Nash, that said she created chords and strumming techniques that others could not copy. Peace.
Absolutely agree.
@@williamstlouis3368 They need to do Crosby Stills and Nash.
Blue is possibly the greatest record ever. The end.
Jonie Mitchell was incredible. She also wrote the song Woodstock that Crosby, Stills and Nash made popular.
Is* she is still amazing
"is"
Yes, Woodstock was visionary
She's still kicking at 78
Listening to CSNY's and her versions of that song back to back is such a trip. Both equally great, but such a different perspective on the same event.
Thank you! Joni’s being honored at the Kennedy Center. Well-deserved. Her early acoustic versions of just her playing piano on “For Free” and “Woodstock” arevamazing.
This song is from Joni Mitchell's "Court and Spark" album. Every song from the album is amazing. It is hard to pick a favorite because they are all so good. The production and engineering are top notch. She is just amazing. I could suggest "Down to You", "People's Parties" and "Free Man in Paris"
I love Court and Spark. It's imo her best. Her lyrics are just amazing always, but, that album was just quality from start to finish. Its as if each song was made to suite tunes before and after. I could play that album all day.
The way she drags out some of the words and then quickly picks it up again is what I enjoy.
Her syncopated style is what always stood out to me.
One of the best singer/songwriters of my generation. The way she puts words together is magical.
One of the best singer/songwriters of all time
She is one of those towering talents that are unique in a generation. The album that this song comes from, Court and Spark, is one of the all time great albums, and among die hard Joni fans, maybe not even her best. Her song Big Yellow Taxi was a cultural phenomenon that encapsulates the entire hippy vibe from the late 60's, all in one song. She wrote the song Woodstock, but it became a big massive hit for Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. She wrote Court and Spark on a piano but wrote the album Hejira on a guitar. Such a great album. Her song Edith and the Kingpin is big favorite of mine. Grab a glass of wine and chill with Joni.
Joni is in my top 4 singer/songwriters. Other 3 are Bob Dylan, Paul Simon and Leonard Cohen.
But there are so many great ones, James Taylor, Gordon Lightfoot, Tom Waits, Neil Young, Carole King and so on
@@hongfang2508 ♥
@@mikell5087 I'm a pretty hard core Joni fan, and "Hejira" is my favorite album. But they're all so good that it comes down to nano-degrees of goodness...
First Joni Mitchell song I ever heard, approximately 1975, 14 years old, totally smitten.
Joni Mitchell is not just highly suggested, but enormously respected. She is legendary.
Joni Mitchell's song 'River' IS the greatest ballad of an era... Period as you yanks might exclaim.
A must do at Christmas time. That song is ACHINGLY good.
Haunting, I hear it in my dreams
I'm SO happy you reacted to this beautiful song. Back in the day we called this "folk rock" music.
“Free Man in Paris” and “River” are two other great Joni Mitchell songs, she has a ton of amazing music. The live performance of her song “Woodstock” is spellbinding
Love the Larry Carlton electric guitar on this. Joni called his playing fly fishing. Never gets old. For me, Joni is the finest singer-songwriter of our generation. A true artiste.
If you're are going to play Joni Mitchell you MUST play "Big Yellow Taxi"
Joni is a legend in the music industry. She does everything herself, from composing the melody and lyrics, to accompanying herself, to producing the music and doing the artwork for her albums (she is a painter). Her album "Blue" is considered one of the most influential album of the last 50 years, many artists credit it as being the album that motivated them to start composing. If you want to listen to a song from this album, "A Case of You" is a great pick. She was also ranked #75 on the Rolling Stones list of the 100 best guitarists of all time.
Thank you for explaining Joni for these two. Joni is a genius, without question. Her sound does have a lot of jazz influence--she can play and write with the best jazz artists, and she has! Joni retunes her guitar to create songs unlike anybody else. Just so creative.
Joni is a highly respected musician among other musicians and sometimes got some of the finest jazz and session players to back her in the studio. Her song writing is amazing, and definitely has jazz overtones.
LC!
Oh, thank you! Your comments are always so thoughtful.
Joni is such an artist. A painter as well as a singer/songwriter. She is from my province of Alberta, Canada and our family friend Wyn taught Joni in high school at High River, Alberta.
Joni is incredible. An icon. 'River' is a song that will haunt you forever. 'Freeman in Paris'. 'Both Sides Now' (one of the most covered songs in history). The Blue album is considered, rightly so, a masterpiece.
When she performed several years ago at a small intimate venue in Los Angeles several singing icons in their own right (Carly Simon, Chrissy Hind, Barbra Streisand attended because as Chrissy said, 'We wanted to hear a real singer'. Her lyrics are astonishing. Look at some of her album covers. She painted many. :) She wrote the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young hit, 'Woodstock'. And her song, 'This Flight Tonight' was turned into a rocker by Nazareth.
Her music has been turned into a ballet. And she is a member of The Order of Canada - I guess the U.S. equivalent would be the Medal of Freedom? She is LEGEND. Her live version of 'California' will blow your mind. Everything Joni will blow your mind.
Best line “Are you gonna let me go there by myself?
That's such a lonely thing to do”
You also need to react to Carol King.,, You've Got a Friend, It's too Late, You make Me Feel Like a Natural Women , Locomotion, Up on the Roof, So Far Away and more. Lennon and McCartney dreamt that they could as prolific as Carol King.
Court and Spark is one of THE greatest albums ever. Genius on so many levels. You could pick just about any song on this album to react to... and be equally blown away. Timeless classic.
Joni Mitchell's combination of folk and jazz and her unique chord voicings and progressions make her music instantly identifiable and absolutely one of a kind. It's not one of her biggest songs, but I think "Song for Sharon" is one of her masterpieces.
Check out Carole King.....album is "Tapestry" and she wrote songs for many big names. All 70s women had this album, I still do. Enjoy! 🎧🎶
Yes! One of the most influential albums of the seventies by a woman who had been writing hits for others for years. Maybe start with the biggest hit off that 1971 album, "It's Too Late."
Oh yes definately
I saw her in concert in 1977 in Spokane. Wish I had seen Joni.
Carole even co-wrote "Locomotion," popularized by Little Eva way back in '62.
My sister had her Tapestry piano music. I have been playing from that book since the 70's!
I'm told she wrote the song about Glen Frey, of The Eagles.
"A Case Of You" should be one of her next to hear.
Have a great day.
Great suggestion!
Back in the day, you couldn't go 10 minutes on the radio without listening to one of her tunes. Very pleasant to hear her.
Joni Mitchell's "Help Me" is a once in a lifetime experience. It's such a beautiful song. It's been covered by many great female vocalists like Winnona Judd, k.d. Lang and my favorite Chaka Khan.
You guys must check out Linda Ronstadt. She was the best female of the 70's. So many awards and such a pure voice. She is a legand.Would suggest Your no good or Just one look..
Linda Ronstadt covered so many genres of music. Pick a genre, pick a song, pick a decade. Linda influenced so many. She even helped a bunch of fellas who eventually became The Eagles. One of the 70s songs I love listening to is her cover of Little Feat's "Willin' ". Parkinson's robbed her of her voice but we will forever have her large library to look back on.
Yes! Blue Bayou, Linda has a killer voice and she is such a good human being.
Absolutely correct. Linda was the best.
Yes Sir!
Karen Carpenter 🎤💫 by far
Definitely do Joni Mitchell's "River," "California," and "Carey"!
Help Me and Big Yellow Taxi are classics and have been covered many times.
Her voice is like a butterfly with its high trills and runs and switching the pace. Many great albums full of her original songs.
SHE’S BADASS!
Keep the variety coming Rob Squad. Joni has that voice that stays with you, so smooth and relaxing. Help Me came out in June of 1974 and peaked at # 7 that month and hit # 1 on the easy listening chart. You guys gotta listen to Al Stewart's masterpiece "YEAR OF THE CAT" WHICH CAME OUT IN 1976, YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED.
I love her phrasing, and I concur on “River” an absolute beauty. “both sides now”, “big yellow taxi” and “come in from the cold” are my faves. And yes play some Linda Ronstadt, The Eagles were her band for a stint.
Without doubt one of THE musical genius of all time. Just perfect.
Funny you mention "flowers in her hair". Led Zeppelin's song Going To California has the line "Someone told me there's a girl out there
With love in her eyes and flowers in her hair" in direct reference to Joni Mitchell.
You're correct.
@@zeppelinfan9360 The whole song, musically and vocally, where Plant lifts the end of lines just like she does ("Flowers in her hayyy-YER") is an homage to the great Joni!
"Clouds" was Joni's biggest Hit.
Joni is a true genius. One of the greatest artists of all time! She has gone through almost every music genre with perfectly written and executed selections .Really there is no way to describe her. You need to check out her extensive body of work to understand just how much she has contributed to the quality of music available.
Joni Mitchell is in a whole class by herself. Such an artistical genius.
Joni's albums will take you places you've never been before emotionally. She is one of THE great voices (and writers) in American mu--- WORLD music.
Isn't Joni Canadian?
Agreed 100%
Yes, Joni is Canadian, but she has spent most of her life now in California and the East coast, I think.
@@TechnicallyTexan still Canadian!
Back in the day artists had their own styles.
Joni is truly unique. She used her voice like an individual instrument. She is a living legend and its awesome to see people descovering her.
I'm pretty sure those background singers are her as well. She is amazing---and in a league of her own as a songwriter, musicians, singer, producer and all around icon. Loved her then and love her now!!
Aw man, prepare to spend the next twelve months with Jonie, she's a rare talent!
Just another rabbit hole to go down. Joni Mitchell is one of the best singing song writers of all time.
Yes Joni is a class of her own. Each album is unique and amazing.❤️ early Joni is Chelsea Morning, Both Sides Now, Circle Game, Woodstock: then the Blue album followed by Court and Spark are iconic. Enjoy the genius of Joni.
For the Roses, one of her best and most accessible albums came between Blue and Court and Spark. For that reason, it often gets overlooked, which is a real shame..
@@bilahn1198 yes! first song came to mind is Woman of Heart and Mind.
"Flower power" was the vibe, and a flower circlet or Daisy chain is what you were searching for, Rob. 😊 Joanie's voice is definitely one of a kind.👍

really any song from Joni's 'Blue' album is absolutely fantastic. That whole album is a pure masterpiece.
Joni is one of the greatest artists of all time. Check out her entire catalog. It's a virtual gold mine of great song writing. Her lyrics are sheer poetry that paints picture stories in your mind.
Joanie Mitchell is one of Canada's greatest exports! ❤🇨🇦❤️
This song takes me back to youth and the simple times of the 70's
My favorite folk singer! Ive asked for this a bunch. Try Blue next! Thank you so much!❤❤❤❤✌

I’ve requested Joni as well and I’m so happy they finally got to her. Please do “A Case of You” “River” and “Little Green”
@@MilosDaddy True, but we all know J and his need for genres need. From 60-90s she was kniwn as a folk singer. Which encompasses all the grest singer/songwriters of that age.
@@pattyestrada6 those are all beautiful, amazing songs! Great choices! ❤
I'm glad you noticed the jazz undertones. They are one of the things that really set Joni apart from other singer-songwriters of her generation. Her voice and melodies swing briskly like a saxophone line.
She is certainly an act on her own. She got her start the coffee houses in Toronto in the 60s- you nailed the hippie feel. Later she got into jazz see Court and Spark.
After Joni Mitchell, you should probably listen to Joan Baez "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down".
It was actually written by Robbie Robertson of The Band and it was on their self-titled album.
@@kmj217 yep. But it's always the first song I think of when I think of Joan Baez. Along with, oddly enough, "Rejoice in the Sun" from the "Silent Running" soundtrack.
I recommend Minnie Ripperton Lovin' You. Great singer from the 70s and she could hit some really high notes.
incredible voice and the mother of Maya Rudolph of SNL!
Yes! I've been saying this! Amazing! Listen to "Loving You".
Girl, you are so insightful and I really appreciate your observations "you can't put it in any box, it is genre-less, it is HER sound". That's everything about Joni right there :-) Keep doing you!
"Both Sides Now" by Joni is lyrically one of the best songs ever written - and of course her voice is gorgeous

Joni's music always gave my mom comfort during changes in her life. She named me after Joni's song, Chelsea Morning. Another good one if you ever feel like reacting to that one. Love love love her music.
Extremely accomplished singer/songwriter. She has the ability to just brighten your mood with that angelic voice. The wrote the song "Woodstock" which she allowed Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young to perform at Woodstock. One of the most iconic songs of the era and worth a reaction for you guys.
awesome reaction . she is in a league of her own. voice of an angel , great song writer
One of the great songwriters of her time (especially strong material from the 1960s through 1980s). Influenced a lot of artists/songwriters. The Court and Spark album (which "Help Me" comes from) is uniformly great. Mitchell was transitioning to a Jazz and Jazz fusion aesthetic at that time.
Joni is the singer songwriter who sits on the very top table. Voice of an angel. Check out the whole of the court and spark album that his comes from. Joni has a voice and a style that really is unique
Poet and a brilliant musician. Try “River” or “A Case of You” next as well

She’s a Queen of melancholy. She’s a Folk singer.
So happy you guys loved Joni Mitchell. Her music is so special.
If you ever get a chance try " Diamonds and Rust " by Joan Baez. Classic from 1975. About a one-way love between two people.
I hear this is about Bob Dylan
@@JeannieBeanie You heard right, him and her and were together in the 60's, Bob Dylan was like a gypsy loved his freedom and she wanted more.
Joni's unique, a once in a lifetime talent....singer, songwriter, musician, artist. Started out as a "folk singer" and morphed into her own genre. An artist so many artists aspire to be. Love all her music.
Joni had the phrasing, feel, melody and harmony of the best jazz saxophonists along with genius level poetry and songwriting, together with a stunningly pure, angelic voice, vocal range and ability. It is not possible to ever have another Joni Mitchell. It didn't hurt that she got to work with some of the most renown musicians of the 20th century (Charles Mingus and Jaco Pastorius come to mind) who recognized her talent and were honored to collaborate.
Big Yellow Taxi another great song from Joni Mitchell and it has been covered by so many other artists. Good one to listen to.
You guys should react to “Blue”, “River” or “A Case of You” next all masterpieces by Joni
Everyone has the same reaction upon hearing joni's voice for the first time - "wow"
Joni's songwriting does incorporate a lot of jazz "feel". Try "Raised on Robbery" for an uptempo Joni song.
I love that song. It's hilarious and fun to sing.
Raised on Robbery has such a Canadian vibe.
She has a beautiful voice!!
I know you would both love Kenny Loggins. I would highly, highly recommend Kenny Loggins "Celebrate Me Home" (Live From The Grand Canyon, 1992) or (Live in Santa Barbara, 1982). Both are great versions. Also, "This is It" is an awesome song. His voice is incredible!! Not as high of a register as the BeeGees, but still an incredible range, and the instrumental tones of his music give me chills. He is also famous for many movie soundtrack songs (Ex. "Footloose"). Amazing talent!!
Love watching you both!! You make my husband and I smile, laugh and reminisce to songs that we grew up with.
Joni is considered one of the best song writers ever, and here voice could sooth the most wild beasts. Been in love with her for 50 years now.
The late '60's thru the '70's were when real talent was recognized and allowed to flourish. So many incredible musicians, all with immediately recognizable styles that were different from each other. Joni had her own style, and it went through all sorts of different forms as she aged and matured. You will never go wrong with any of her tunes.
One of the best lyricists EVER! In "You turn me on, I'm a radio" she says I know you don't like weak women you get bored so quick, and you don't like strong women cuz they're hip to your tricks. It's been dirty for dirty down the line but you know I come when you whistle when you're loving and kind. If you've got too many doubts, if there's no good reception for me then tune me out cuz honey who needs the static? It hurts the head". One of the best group of lines ever written. Also check out " I am a woman of heart and mind", "A case of you", " He was playing real good for free", " The circle game". Amazing lyrics on all of them. Love you two!!!!! ❣️
Lyricist AND composer!
Since you are having a boy, you have to listen to Joni Mitchell sing "Circle Game". It's about a boy growing up. I'm sure that you will love it! And you'll probably cry!
